Getting your room upgraded

I was just wondering can you or has anyone ever been able to get their room upgraded when they check in but still only spending the original points? Example: spending points for a 1BR that was booked but getting upgraded to a 2BR.

In over 10 years of DVC, never. It's very rare and only seems to happen if there's a problem with the room. I don't think DVC wants to get involved in issues over why one member was upgraded and another not. DVC usually runs close to full occupancy anyway and they don't overbook room categories to get more reservations at the lowest level like CRO does.

Timeshares don't operate like hotels, you're virtually always going to get what you booked. Upgrades seem to only occur when there's a maintenance issue, and there are no villas of the type you booked available, so they have no choice but to upgrade you.

It might happen for a cash reservation, but very doubtful for a points reservation. And odds of a short term reservation (say a night or two) would have a better chance than a longer term reservation.

The way I see it I get an upgrade every time I check in. If I were to take my original investment. Lets just say $12,000 and divide by 50 years. That's approximately $240 plus my maintenance fee of approximatley $500 pe4 year so $750 per year to stay in a two bedroom villa for five nights with a rack rate of about $800 a night in the summer.

So the way I see it I could be staying at the allstars or pop for the same I am paying for a huge 2 bedroom 2 bath room with kitchen and washer and dryer. yep that's all I need ... not much more to wish for. :)

I do know of people that asked, got what they wanted and later found out they were charged the extra points without their knowledge. The only exceptions I'm aware of are where the original room or resort were not available. I know of a couple of instances where people showed up and they did not have a room for them at the original resort. There was some room for negotiations on those occassions from what I understand.

Okay, I never thought this would happen and I can't explain why BUT this just happened on our latest trip.

DH, the kids and I used our points for a 2 bedroom at BWV's. Then we borrowed some of our points for my in-laws to have their own seperate studio. When we checked in we found that my in-laws were upgraded to a 1 bedroom, no additional points charged to my account. This was their first (and only) trip to WDW plus my FIL was celebrating his birthday. I don't know the exact reasoning but I figured maybe they had extra rooms and were trying to get him to buy into DVC. :confused3 They enjoyed the room but they're not interested in DVC.

We once were upgraded from a studio to a 1 bedroom unit at HHead. It was just for one night, and I have no idea what the back story was there. I didn't complain.

Last trip we were upgraded from a one bedroom to a two bedroom at BLT. It was only for two nights, but it was wonderful. Then we moved to a one bedroom at SSR for the rest of the trip. Guess what? Now we have a two bedroom booked at BCV for May. Sometimes it is better not to be upgraded.:lmao:

Never in 5 years -- 30 stays in a DVC resort.

We were upgraded from a 1 bedroom to a 2 bedroom at HHI once about 5 years ago. The resort was VERY quiet (shoulder season) and I'm guessing that's why.
