Hello everyone!
For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness
New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

Hi everyone! Got out this morning for a 3.7 mile run... really chilly with the wind and I wish I had wore a little more. Nothing too exciting but I'm glad I got it done so I'll have more time tonight. Looking forward to Lost!
Have a great day everyone!

Hi everyone! I tried to come over here earlier, but the boards were acting crazy. I'm heading the TKD class tonight. I'm trying to switch my work schedule so that I can get in earlier and then get to the gym earlier. We make our own hours generally as long as we arrive between 7 and 9:30. I've been arriving closer to 9:30. Today I got in at 8 (I had a 9 am meeting). I can manage that time easily as long a I start getting to bed earlier. Wish me luck!

Megan - I start at 7:30. I am NOT a morning person, but it's so nice to get off at 4. It should seem much easier to get your work outs in. Takes a bit to get used to, thouugh. Good luck!
nursepammi - Way to go! Hope you are still feeling that way tomorrow! ;)

I managed my second run today since taking some time off after the marathon and am happy to say that I did a 4 miler with no problems. I was smilling when done (not a natural facial position for me---and I can't stand it when people say "Smile"!) So I am happy. Followed up with a yoga class, which I am committing to do at least twice a week.
Vicky Also looking forward to Lost. Now if I can just remember the plots from last year!
Megan You could always do what I used to do--workout at 5:30 am! Of course, I don't do that anymore.
nursepammi Congrats on your workout. Sounds like it went well.

Hello all and welcome to February. The month started out a bit nuts for me because our production server crashed at work. I put in 17 hours yesterday and we got the server fixed so once the tapes get back from out disaster recovery site in Michigan I will be going in tonight for a while to get the server back online. Thank God for being hourly :thumbsup2
I got out and had a great run though after work and before work again. The weather looks like it will be low 30's all week which, sadly, is much warmer then it has been her in Northeastern Ohio.

Vicky: Had no idea you were a Lostie! We'll have to compare notes after I catch up!
Megan: GOOD LUCK with shifting your hours--getting up earlier would be hard (for me), but so worth it! Did you get all your Princess 1/2 stuff straightened out?
NursePammi: WTG with your 2/2 training streak! :woohoo:
Maura: Yay for running with a smile on your face. Never happens to me, but I'm delighted you're running pain free. Almost makes me smile.
Frank: Ugh, marathon work days aren't nearly as rewarding as other marathons. No matter what your pay scale. Hope all goes smoothly and that the weather warms up for you (and me) soon.
AFM: Just popping in here, hoping to keep up with thing. No running today--strength & XT--but I had a nice run yesterday. It warmed up to the mid-30s, so of course I went out overdressed. This weekend it's supposed to dump down to the mid-20s again, though, just in time for a (short) LR. ;)

Maura - Hooray for teh great 4-miler! That's awesome! I do smie when I see scream teamers at races, but smiling while training? Wow!
Frank - Ugh. Hope things have slowed down. 17 hours? Insane!
Debra - Yeah, especially after marathon, I finsd myself over dressing now.
Was lazy and skipped teh TM last night. Bad me. Did 6 am core conversion, though. Still can't believe I am gettign to a work out before 6 am. :scared1:

Hi everyone! Happy Friday :) I slept in yesterday and thought I missed my chance for a run. It's funny how missing something as small as 2 miles can make me feel so guilty. Luckily, DF happened to be downtown and drove me to the gym. I got there 30 minutes before my training session so was able to hop onto the TM for about 20 minutes. Yay! I have a 13 miler tomorrow so I'm just looking at the different routes around my area. A lot of the sidewalks are icy - they weren't cleared earlier this week, so they melted and refroze.
Maura - I rarely smile on training runs either. Glad you had a good 4 miler! I'm trying to fit in yoga twice a week too.
Debra - Did you watch Lost on Tuesday? Hoping the weather doesn't get too cold for you on the weekend.
Megan - What's a TDK class?
nursepammi - WTG on the training!
Frank - Yikes! 17 hours that's some serious overtime!
Carrie - WTG on the morning workout! I usually can't make it out of bed before 6AM. Unless we're going to Disney :)
Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

happy friday!
i am running my first 5k in the morning. i hope the weather cooperates. we are supposed to get a ton of rain overnight. our ground is already over 100% saturated. part of the area could be flooded, on our way to there. so, i'm hoping that it isn't too bad in the morning. it's supposed to stop overnight.
my goal for february is to run an average of 14 miles a week for the rest of the month. i'm only going to have 12.7 for this week (ran a shorter distance this morning). not a great start, but i'm eager to get back on track next week!

I'm new here! Hello everyone! :wave2:
I'm hoping to do the half marathon next Jan. Running hurts my knees, but I use to be a pretty decent speed walker. I have so far to go to get in shape and build up both my speed and endurance. I thought shooting for the WDW half marathon would give me a hard date to stay focussed on.
My goal is to get back to a good walking program, and supplement with stairmaster, elipitcal machine and weights. I could use any suggestions on how to prep for something like this!
Thanks! :hippie:
....Oh one last thing. When would I have to sign up for this?

Emily - Just starting is the key. One step at a time. Looks like you're doing great to me!
ILuvKingLouis - Welcome to WISH! Many of us have trained using Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham. Excellent book! You should look into signing up soon, though. Last year, it was full by May. You can go to the registration site to see how full it is. There should be a link in the welcome thread.

I got out this morning and did my 5 mile long walk. I don't normally go out in the morning but the snow was on the way. Right now, we have about 1 1/2 inches of the white stuff and it's still coming down fairly steadily. There calling for about 8 inches by morning. I also got my short walks done on Monday and Wednesday of this week.
Next week could be tough getting good walks in. I normally walk to Rail to Trail paths that don't get plowed. I will probably need to get out somewhere else for my walks.

Hi everyone,
Off to a 10k tomorrow. A little worried, since I haven't run as much this week. Didn't run yesterday do to craziness at the gym (did bike for 45 minutes) or today. Still should end up in the 35 mile range for the week.
Best,

I do read everyone's posts, but I am usually at work and trying get updates and hope off the DIS as quickly as possible, but tonight I've got time!
wtpclc I'm certainly not able to get into work by 7:30. Getting into work at 8 two days in a row was a record for me.
Maura I love it when I can finish a run smiling. My TnT coach noticed difference in me as soon as I followed her training plan. I would love it if I could get in a 5:30 am workout. DBF is not all that supportive when I need to get up early for things. He complained all fall because I was going out early one day each weekend for my runs.
Deb I think I have everything set for Princess weekend (except telling DBF that I will be there for almost a whole week. I am staying at SSR, BLT and BCV. I got flights on Southwest (I love them!) and now I just need to figure out food while I'm there. Kirsty will be joining me for the race and I've already told her that she needs to drag me to a PR.
bunnyfoo I hope you get your 13 miles in safely! I'm looking at 8-10 miles on the treadmill this weekend since I don't expect to be able to do much outside except shovel! TKD= Tae Kwon Do. I've been training for years, but took the last 1.5 years off and started going back to classes in November. DBF's little brother just got his black belt in October and some friends who were a few belts behind me that were test for their black belt confirmed (you have to continue training for 6 months after your initial black belt test to show that you aren't there just for the black belt). If I'm lucky, I will only have to wait one more year before I have my black belt.
fairestoneofall Good luck with the 5k! That is a great goal for the month! I may need to steal that idea.
IluvKingLouis Welcome! That was how I got started here. I registered for last year's Princess and started training for it about 9 months out. I would recommend keeping your eyes on how full the race is. Once it gets to 50% you might want to consider signing up. I seem to recall last year filling up much more quickly.
As for me, getting in early didn't last too long. I got in by 8 two days and then was up all night Wednesday with a sick kitty. I ended up taking her to the vet where she got x-rays. She didn't get much better last night though so this morning we were up early and the vet said either an ultrasound to rule out a blockage in the intestines or go straight to the surgery. We got the ultrasound done and she didn't have a blockage, but now we are waiting on blood tests to see if she has pancreatitis (which I now need to research since I'm not familiar with it at all). My poor baby had to have both sides shaved for the ultrasound and she was given prevacid and a few other drugs including pain killers. The poor thing looks so stoned right now, just sitting there dazed. I just hope they can fix her and bring me back my snuggle-kitty.

Hey everyone! I dont usually post here but read often for running motivation. Its about 645 am and I am heading out to do a 13 mile run.....and REALLY having a hard time getting out there this morning. Its cold, dark, and Im just tired of running in the cold! My half marathon is in 2 weeks so this will be my last long run before my race. The best part is Im heading to FL for 2 weeks a few days after so hopefully these days of running in 10 degrees or less will be behind me soon! Thanks for all your posts and giving me some inspiration to get out there this morning!

Back from the run! I complain about running in the cold, but once Im out there and a mile or two into it, I actually enjoy it. It is refreshing, unlike running in the heat. I love doing my long run on Saturday mornings because I get the rest of the weekend to chill out!

ran my 5k this morning. my "official" time by them was 30:30, but it is a very low-tech race. we didn't have chips. they started the time at "go," but i was about mid-pack. and they wrote down your finish time with a pencil/paper as your crossed. so, not 100% accurate. ;) my nike plus time was right at 30 minutes, which isn't too bad considering the road was flooded in several places. so, i either got in line to go around (which slowed everyone down) or ran through the puddle. i couldn't wait to get warm, dry socks on! ;)
anyway, i wanted to finish in around 30 minutes, and i did that. now, on to a 10k at the end of march!
total miles for february week one: 13.06

Hi everyone! I woke up with a really nasty headache at 6AM today. I took a Tylenol and went back to sleep hoping it would go away. It didn't so I pushed my 13 miler off until tomorrow and ran 5 instead. It was really windy on the main streets and I felt like I was doing double the work. Hope the sunshine sticks around for tomorrow.
Megan - TDK sounds cool! I didn't realize the amount of training you have to do to keep your black belt status. I thought it was something you just earned but it makes sense.
Lisa - I like doing LRs on Saturdays too! Good luck on your upcoming half!
fairestoneofall - Fantastic time on your 5K! I remember doing a 1/2 in a park last year after a rain storm and there were several areas with giant puddles where runners were going on the grass to get around.
IluvKingLouis - Welcome! Remember to incorporate some cross training and core work into your routine. When I started out, I had knee and back pain from running. Once I started doing more core exercises with my PT, the pain mostly went away. But I can definitely feel a difference in my running form.
Jennifer - How did your 10K go?
Have a great day everyone!

Emily - We obviously had the same weather pattern over us. It rained all day yesterday and half of the night. We had to plan our route this morning based on where the flooded areas were. We opted to run the roads instead of the greenways just to stay out of the mud. Great job on your 5K!
Jeremy - We couldn't find anywhere to run this week after last weekend's snow. Even after a couple of days of melting, our favorite places were still covered in icy patches. I did one run on the TM, but missed everything else until this morning. I'm REALLY glad this weekend's storm skipped us.
Lisa - I totally agree. I hate starting the run in the cold, but once I'm moving, I much prefer running in the cold to any other weather, at least as long as it's not raining, sleeting, or windy. Cold and DRY is my favorite. I hope you have good weather in Florida!
Frank - Hope the server problems are fixed now, and you've pocketed lots of money for future races! You can pick up the tab for dinner in Indy! ;) I had a crazy week at work too, but fortunately didn't have to work extra hours (in fact, got to work less because of the snow which gave me time for the TM run on Monday morning!)
Elaine - :welcome: Start slowly. You have plenty of time to get in shape and build the mileage. But hang out here and we'll keep you motivated!
Megan - Hope your kitty is better.
Vicky - We ran the first 8 miles in just cold today, then turned a corner and hit wind. Saw a snowflake or two as well. It felt just like Disney all over again, and I'm pretty sure I started whining. Then I just took a deep breath and got through the last 2 miles. Good for you for getting some miles in even if wasn't the whole 13. Good luck tomorrow!
I've pretty well covered the details - ran 10 with my running group this morning. Altered our regular route to avoid all puddles and mud. Ended up running up two BIG hills due to the rerouting. Felt good to actually get in some real mileage. This is the most I've run since Disney, and I have a half marathon next weekend.

10k report:
Sometimes not expecting the best is a good thing. I haven't raced a 10k since September and anything shorter than a full since November. I took an extra rest day and had no idea what my pacing would be like.
This PR brought to you by the Kara Goucher article in March's Runners' World. I finally have my confidence back. I set new PRs for both the 10k (46:55) and a new 5k PR at the split (22:35). It was also an age group win, but that didn't matter, I finally feel successful as a runner again.
Best,
Jennifer

Aw, thanks for all the support! :flower3:
I can't begin to tell you how outa shape I am! Tomorrow I'm off to our community center for treadmill, and a little biocycle and some weights. I think after a month I'll work into the couch to 5K program. Just want to take some pounds off first before I do anything that's not low impact. My knees never liked it when I tried to take up running,...and that was years ago and I was much lighter.

Hi Everyone!
Just checking in. Took some time off after the WDW marathon and now am starting back to get ready for this year's races. Only thing I did today was shovel (26 inches! :scared1:)
Worst part is they say another storm is coming on Tues. night-Wed. that could bring us anywhere from 3 inches to 2 feet! (doubly :scared1:) I have snow piled up so high now, I don't know where I'll put another 2 feet.
ILuvKing Louis - Welcome. Just starting is the hard part. Keep checking in here. Lots of advice available.

DH and I are beginning our training next week for the mini in Indianapolis in May (our first half)! We live in MI and aren't excited about running in 20 degree weather! We'll probably start the first couple weeks in the gym using the treadmill and the elliptical. Eventually we're going to have to brave the cold and hit the pavement!

Hi everyone! Did my 13 miler this morning! It was actually ok but I ran a new route which had a lot hills. I did pretty well on them and up until mile 6 or so when I stopped to take a couple of gel blocs. I kind of lost my rhythm after that and felt really fatigued by mile 11. My pace would have been better if I had been able to go faster on the last 2-3 miles. I finished in 2:31. Next week's LR is 15 miles, should be interesting... :)
Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Went for a quick power walk yesterday. Today it's spitting wet, sloppy, slippery snow. I went out and bought a couple of decent sports bras, and a pair of running shoes that should do the trick for now. They're New Balance.
When I start really pounding the pavement I will go to a store that caters to runners and drop some bigger bucks on a pair.
I'm gonna try to do a little Nordic Track Ellipse in the basement this afternoon. Sidewalks are too dangerous today. I may renew my membership at our local community center tomorrow. It's actually quite reasonable and a very nice facility. And I can then incorporate weight training and maybe some core strength classes.
If I did (let's say) a third of my running/training on a treadmill would that be ok? I'm much more apt to exercise indoors during our winter months.

Carissa - You found the right spot. Welcome tto WISH!
Elaine - I would strt with an all walk program and then ease your way into intervals doing some running. Just ease yourself into things.
Jennifer - Way to go! That is so awesome!
Terri - :scared1: I just can't believe how you got hammered I haven't seen snow like tha tin years.
Vicky - Ho[e you'r efeeeing better!
delickidesign - Welcome! Running in 20 degree weather is not super fun, but IMO it beats the heck out of a TM. You may want some yaktrax if you're be hitting any snowy paths. Plus, ypou need to keep in mind that your body works a lot harder in the cold. If your pace is not what you think it shoudl eb at first or not what you can do on the TM, it's do to teh cold and extra layers. DH adn I figure it adds an extra 20% effort to run in snow and cold.
Jackie - Great job on the 10!
KingLouis - If you start to have any pains before you go to a real runnig store, you'll want to movev that visit up. Great job on teh walk!
fairestone - 1. We are all at our own leves here and you really shoud not sompare yourself to thos eof us who are most experienced. 2. We love to vcelebrate all victories iwth each other. Your first race ais a huge reason to celebrate. 3. I giv ehuge kudos to those who do 5Ks. DH and I can go forvever, but we are slow. 5Ks scare us. So, never underestimate meeting your goals. smacky1 - yes, I do cold much netter than heat. I actually had quite and enjoyable run yesterday too. It does take a bit of motivation ot get me out the door, though.
Well, I did my longest run since marathon too. 8 miles. Gee, not too lang ago, that was a short run. lol. The sun was out adn teh path was mostly clear and there was only a little wind. Felt good. Best LR in a long time. Oh, adn teh wind didn't force me to double over, so I could actually concentrate on my Chi running again. :upsidedow

Welcome to Carissa & deleckidesign and good luck as you get started or re-started on your running.
Jackie Sounds like you're all set for your race. Good luck!
Vicky Congrats on your 13 and hills are deceptively draining. I bet you'll be fine next weekend.
Terri Hope you're shoveled out and out of the path for the next stom headed east.
ElaineI actually have done 2/3 of my training on TM--my speedwork and my tempo run. My long runs I will do outdoors. I do max out at about 5-6 miles being the most I really can mentally handle.
Carrie Glad your LR went well.
I ran outdoors yesterday for the first time since the marathon. Went out too fast (attempting to mimic the pace for what is supposed to be my long run tempo in my upcoming training plan) and felt winded. So I ended up running somewhere around 4.5 miles. Will have to re-think my plan! It is amazing to think that I ran a marathon last month and now feel like I couldn't go 5 miles! Oh well, just a bad day.

I'm really glad to hear that folks can get some training on a treadmill. I also like the fact that being on a treadmill means I'll be near a bathroom! :rotfl:
It's really snowing here today, so I'm staying home. Roads are slick, as are the sidewalks. I do have a Nordic Track Ellipse in the basement and some free weights. Guess I'll be doing that today.

Emily - No reason to feel like your 5K was a shorter race. You have to start somewhere, and 5K's are an excellent way to start. I did my very first race in May of 2006 at Disney - the 5K in conjunction with the Minnie, and I was immediately hooked. Now I've come full circle... keep reading!
Terri - I do NOT envy you. Sometimes we complain about never getting snow. But we got 5 inches last week, and what little is left on the ground is getting on my nerves. The weekend storm missed us, except for a few flurries, and I'm very grateful. I cannot begin to imagine consecutive 2 foot snowfalls. We had 20 inches in 2000, and that was the first time ever!
Deleckideisgn - :welcome: It is not easy to train in cold weather, but I agree with Carrie. I'd rather run outside than on the TM most days. DH, DD19 and I are all running the Indy half too. It will be DD's first half. There's a planned WISH dinner on Friday night, so if you can plan on joining us!
Carissa - :welcome: You're absolutely in the right place. 5K's are a great way to stay motivated while waiting for next January. I have a hard time continuing to train all year if I don't have something more immediate on the horizon.
Elaine - I second what Carrie said about the shoes. If you have any problems at all with your feet and/or legs, go on and go to a running store. Nothing is more important than a good pair of running shoes, or two. Then keep up with how many miles you're putting on them so you'll know roughly when to replace them.
Carrie - It's amazing how quickly the mileage changes. I did 7 three weeks ago, skipped two weeks ago due to snow, and it felt like a huge deal to finally run 10 this weekend. I had to keep saying "you just ran 39," when in reality it's been a month now. And the 5K thing, well... keep reading for my opinion on that!
Maura - I'm still trying to figure out what all my different paces are. I'm trying a new plan, but can't decide exactly where to start since I have a half marathon every month. But I'm REALLY confused when it tells me to run at my 5K pace, or my 10K pace, versus my goal pace. I have NO idea what they are!
As for me - After running 10 miles (on hills) on Saturday, I woke up Sunday and decided to run a 5K with DH. Have no idea what possessed me to do such a thing, other than it's been a couple of years since I'd done one and it was a pretty day, although still cold. All of my previous 5K's have been done as a run/walk, and one of my goals for this year is to RUN a 5K with no walk breaks. I'd planned to train for this, but decided to give it a try yesterday and see what happened. I actually made it 2 miles without stopping, but then someone threw a bunch of hills into the course. I switched to R3/W1 for the last mile, and shaved 1:36 off my previous 5K time. Today I feel like I just started running. I'm not sure I was this sore after Goofy! Something about 10 miles on hills followed by a 5K... So for Emily, 5K's after you've gotten used to marathons take an entirely different mindset and training regimen if you're going to do them well. And Carrie, I'm with you. I'm not fast. I'm a very slow 5K runner. And trying to run fast uses an entirely different set of muscles. I sprinted to the end trying to pass the woman in front of me. But I'm thrilled with my results, and I had fun, and I got a rose and t-shirt for my efforts!

Where is dinner on Fri night? We plan on driving down that morning from MI to pick up our packets. Not sure how late we'll stay in Indy that evening. We're staying at my dad's in Kokomo, then he's driving us down the morning of the mini. This will be our first half, too. :)

Obviously, I WASN'T thinking. (The truth is that I'd never actually seen the 5K course and had no idea the last mile was nothing but hills. When I looked at the elevation chart on the Garmin info I was in shock.) And rest is most definitely on the agenda!

I think Frank/Firedancer has suggested the Old Spaghetti Factory. We haven't set a time yet, but I would guess it wouldn't be too late, maybe 6:00ish? Keep checking the Indy thread as it gets closer. There are a bunch of WISHers doing the race this year.

That was I. I figure as we get closer someone will just make a reservation. Once we decide on a time I can be that guy.
Jen- congrats on the PR. They sure feel wonderful.
After the week I had last week with out server failure and disaster recovery adventures I am getting back to normal. Two 16 hour + days in a week are just not conducive to..well..anything. We learned a lot and managed to engineer some solutions to problems that the software and hardware providers didn't even know existed. I think we will be making a presentation to their development team shortly to try and get their solution running a bit better. It was hard and a week from hell but we managed to impress some important people so I'll take it.
I got out and put in a short run tonight in anticipation of more snow. If it isn't too bad I will get out again tomorrow but if it is I will be on the treadmill again :headache:. The first 5K of the year is this weekend but the real start to the running season up here is March 13th. I am hoping that the weather will let me get some longer runs in before the National on the 20th. As it is I am not going for any kind of PR or anything for that race anyway. I'm sure with the storm we had this weekend there are a lot of people in the northeast quarter of the country with the same problem.
I really want Southwest to post their rates for October because I want to see if I can justify the Wine & Dine. All the overtime last week makes it a little easier :thumbsup2.

Since I'm new to running (or walking/jogging) is the old practice of carbo loading still the norm? Do you incorporate some protein too?
Macaroni grill has a make your own pasta bowl, which I love. I get it with whole wheat ziti, broccoli, mushrooms and pine nuts....all in a spicy marinara. I could add chicken if protein is more of an issue.
I'm actually fantasizing about the dinner after the marathon! :lmao:
I want to reward myself really really well! Has anyone thought about where they plan to eat that evening?

Pre-race for a half or full I have a pasta and chicken combination. I don't really bother with any carbo loading before anything shorter then a half or before a training run shorter than 15.
Are you talking about after a WDW race? I always reward myself with Boma, my favorite restaurant on property. I plan on being there at some point Sunday evening on January 9, 2011.

We ate at Artist Point this year after the marathon. It's our favorite special restaurant, and we knew we could have a glass (or two) of wine plus a fabulous meal. We were seated next to another guy who ran the full and we talked about the race the entire meal!

OMG - it's snowing again! They're predicting we could get another 1-2 feet!:scared1: Now, I get a good workout shoveling all this snow, but there's nowhere to put it! We have piles from the storm last weekend that are 3-4 ft. high. Ugh!
Stopped by my foot doctor's today and picked up a pair of orthotic insoles. Gonna try them out (when the snow goes away) to see if they help with my shin splints.

Hi all!
It's been a bit slow going this past week and a half. I'm guessing tomorrow I'll be able to get to the gym for some play. Kirby Dog took me for a walk today just before the snow started.
Don't forget to post your events on the calendar. I've just added to my list so I'm going to have to check to make sure I've got it all straight on the events calendar here.

Hi WISHers! I have no running to report....I have sick kiddos and my indoor treadmill (I have a junky garage one too) is broken but hopefully that will change soon...
ran my 5k this morning. my "official" time by them was 30:30, but it is a very low-tech race. we didn't have chips. they started the time at "go," but i was about mid-pack. and they wrote down your finish time with a pencil/paper as your crossed. so, not 100% accurate. ;) my nike plus time was right at 30 minutes, which isn't too bad considering the road was flooded in several places. so, i either got in line to go around (which slowed everyone down) or ran through the puddle. i couldn't wait to get warm, dry socks on! ;)
anyway, i wanted to finish in around 30 minutes, and i did that. now, on to a 10k at the end of march!
total miles for february week one: 13.06
Emily! Here you are with your 5K report! I was asking about it on the Triple D thread (come post! :)). BIG Congrats to you on your first 5K!! :thumbsup2

Hi all,
Just came back from alittle XC ski outing at my local park--just went out the back door, put on my skis and off I went. My technique stinks since I don't ever ski more than once or twice a year, but hey--it's a workout!
I like the talk of post-race meals. I didn't do one this year--I wasn't sure what shape I'd be in after the marathon! But I did the WISH dessert reception. If I did pick a celebration meal, I think I might just head over to the Rose and Crown--okay, so it's not the "meal", it's the "beverage"!

Boma could work for Saturday night as long as the dinner wasn't too late. I would like as much of the goodness out of my stomach by 4am. I know there is a Pop meet usually on Friday but that would work also. As the race gets closer we can figure it out. I don't even know who all is going or where I am staying yet.

I may be interested in a post race dinner at Boma. I'm not sure about going there pre-race. I'll be with TnT again next year. This year they got us tickets to the Victory party with a special TnT exclusive party before it (it is such a large event for them that they had the party on the Streets of America and LMA.
This year, my post race meal was at Teppan Edo. I really enjoyed it and sat with a nice family with amazingly well-behaved children considering the time of the dinner. With all of the reservations that I made, I didn't have one for dinner on Saturday night. I tried to get into Sanaa or Boma, then asked them for something (anything) at Epcot. I would recommend a dinner at Teppan Edo anytime!
I got my cross training in this morning and I'm heading out for more. I spent half of my morning shoveling off the roof of my garage and now you would never know I touched it.

Yet another shoe question...
sorry all, feels like I'm beating a dead horse, but I'm stuck on what to do and know someone here can help me.
I have a Half Marathon in 10 days. My sneakers are dead, I've been having some minor pain issues in my knees and shins, pretty sure it's the shoes. I have 329 miles on them, and I'm heavy, so I don't know if I should try to keep using them. When I got them, I loved them so much I bought another pair for when these wore out, same style, size, everything. So, I switched to the new ones, and I hate them. They hurt my feet, my heel rubs up and down in one of them, they are not going to work for me. I wore them for a 4 mile race and a 2 mile treadmill run, and I don't think there's any hope for them. So, my question, do I wear the oldies and hope for the best, or go get a new pair, and hope they work? Added into the question, my current sneaks are discontinued, so I will have to model up or try another kind.
Thanks for any input!

Angie - Were your new shoes recommende by shoe store that knew the shoes that worked for you? If not, go ot a store adn tell tehm and see what they recommend and go with those. If they feel good on a short run, you should be ok. IF not, return and try again. My shoes last year for princess only had ~6 miles on tehm. yes, there were the next level up from the style I had before, so that helps. Still, go to a sotre, beg for hielp and try. YTou do not want to race in something that hurts. SHoes these days should not really need to be broken in. Good luck!! :wizard:

Terri and Megan, that is some snow you've got there. Whew!
Angie, like Carrie said. Go to a running store and have them fit you. You can still wear them. If they don't work you can return them and try something else. If they don't feel good in the store they will not break in. If they feel good in the store take them out and run/walk around. Take in your old shoes so they can see how you've worn them and try the shoes on with the socks you use. I'd say you'd be better to go with the newer shoes if they feel comfy than the old ones causing aches. Good luck with your event.

Angie, am I correct to assume you're running Hampton?
About the shoes, definitely head to a good store (your best bet is probably Runner's Alley in Manchester) and let them make a suggestion... do this ASAP so you have as much time as possible to decide what to do before the race. Once you have them, wear them for a day (normally wouldn't ever recommend this, but because of the time...) as you go about your business and see how they feel on your feet. If the shape, cut, support, or anything else is going to cause an issue, hopefully you'll know it before having to run (pound on your feet) in them. Assuming that goes well, try 2-3 miles in them, easy pace, and see how you feel. Do 1-2 miles again next Saturday so you're loosened up for Sunday, and so that your feet are familiar with exactly how you'll feel at showtime.
Good luck! I plan to be there either volunteering or just cheering.

Hi everyone! I did a quick 1.5 miles on the TM last night. The snow is slowly melting here and I didn't think it was worth running outside for such a short distance and risk slipping on the ice. I'm planning to do 15 miles tomorrow so hopefully most of the sidewalks will be dry by then.
Angie - I agree with the advice of going to arunning store and being fitted for new shoes. I would definitely go with a new pair over the old ones. If your old ones don't have any more cushoning or support left, it will make for an uncomfortable race. Good luck with your shoes!
Terri - That is a lot of snow!! Is there room to keep moving it out of the way? Usually when we get that much snow here, the city comes by with trucks to remove it or melters to make room.
Frank/Liz - I'd be up for a Boma dinner! I always wondered if it would make a good pre-race dinner. I feel like they use a lot of sugar in a lot of their dishes. My favourites there are the coconut curry soup, ribs, Zebra domes and Cocomisu - which they don't seem to make any more :(
Megan - What was the Victory Lap Party like? Were the ride line ups shorter or were there special characters out? I didn't like Saana that much but I think that's because we're spoiled with a lot of Indian restaurants in Toronto. They skimped out on a lot of carbs (breads and rice) but gave us a lot of sauces. I didn't get that. The service was also so-so even though we had two waiters.
Have a great day/weekend everyone! Stay warm :wave2:

Vicky - no place to put the snow. We're lucky we get the trucks to plow the streets more than once. We have piles and piles of snow all around. I saw where some folks built a snowman that's 6 feet tall and pretty wide around.
Another storm headed here Monday night. On the news they said they still can't predict how much. Three different models are all saying something different. One model says 1-3", another says 4-6" and the other says 8-12". Guess the weathman can cover all basis to say he was right. :rolleyes1
The Victory Lap Party was ok. We had to wait about 20 minutes for both GMR and Toy Story Mania. Walked right on RnR and ToT. Characters were out for photo ops. Even got to dance with Goofy! A few concession stands were open and some liquor sales. I had fun and would do it again. (But it was hard getting in and out of RnR with stiff legs ;))

Hello everyone, hope you are all dug out of the snow. I had my first 5K of the year this morning. As with most years the lack of winter training really showed through. I expected it though. The last 2 weeks have been terrible between the weather and work. One of my running friends is training for Boston and did 40 miles last week on the treadmill. Dropping in to say I'm still alive and kickin'.
Managed to get out and run a bit this week. Monday at the gym. Tuesday shoveled snow then ran 2 miles in the snow. Neat seeing my lone prints as I ran back home. :) Wednesday 4 miles around the block again.
Saturday was my longest since Goofy with 6 miles. We headed to the park that keeps the trails clear (Stony) and so got in my longest and 1st run with inclines. I really need to stop overdressing though. I was boiling by mile 3.
6 miles = 1:12:28 with an avg pace of 12:05.
After this past week I ran out of excuses. I no longer can say to DH that it's too cold out as it was like 25 with a wind chill of 16 on one of my night runs. The good though is now I know I can go out and enjoy a night run even if it is in the 20's.
For now back to sneezing and sniffling for the day :) Hopefully it's long gone by tomorrow morning.
Healthy PD thoughts to everyone!!!

I have started a conservative C25K program and I have also started using the GoWear Fit. I am so excited! I am enlisting all of my family, friends, and several coworkers to keep me motivated. I have also started a blog. I figure that if I tell a whole lot of people, then not only will I have more support, but I also know that if I give up, it will be very embarrassing.

Hi everyone! I managed to keep up with my running this weekend - 15 miles on Saturday and then 6.2 on Sunday. Saturday was a nice and sunny day. Funny how the sunshine makes such a difference :) The 15 miles was a milestone for me, it's the longest distance I've run so far. It's about 3.6 miles less than the 30K race I've signed up for at the end of March. It was a slow distance and I felt really fatigued at the end but I'm really glad I got it done! A little bit of minor ankle soreness but otherwise I was good to go for Sunday. I thought I could get the virtual race done a little faster but I took longer than an hour.
Roselark - Congrats on starting C25K! Don't worry about what friends and family think, everyone has to start somewhere.
Maura - I'm having such a great time watching the Olympics too! The only thing is that I'm finding myself sitting and snacking more than I should be  Do you have any upcoming races?
Carrie - We have some residual snow on our sidewalks. Hills and snowy sidewalks do not make a good combination. I tried running on the roads as much as I could but it was not possible on all parts of my route. Good luck on the 10 miler if you decide on it :)
Diane - I know what you mean about overdressing! pixiedust: hope your sniffles go away soon!
Frank - Wish I was someone who could do that many miles on a TM. I have a hard enough time with 4 miles!
Megan - Did the movie help with the 10K on the TM? I think it's so cute when I see the characters dancing at the park parties!
Terri - I hope you don't get blanketted again with snow. I think next year, my area will get a ton of snow since I'm going to do the full in January.
Have a great day everyone!! :wave2:

Maura - Congrats on teh 10K! Ugh on your dh biking Kensington.. I'm not sure if running or biking is worse there in my mind.
Diane - Thanks. :sad2: ;)
roselark - Welcome! Most of us had family adn friends telling us we wre crazy at the start or for the firs tyear of trianing or are still being told that. You're in good company! Many of us started out of shalpe adn overweight too! Meet your goal and you will know a sense of accomplishment like no othere, though. Stick around here and you will make some wonderful friends on teh journey! :goodvibes
Vicky - Way to go on the 15 miles!!!! lol. The 10-miler will happen. just a matter of where it gets done. That's still up in the air. HOep I can do it at home without too much snow or too many hills. Will go for teh hilly path as opposed to TM if I have to, though.

Yes Maura, I really do hate the treadmill that much.
It was a bit snowy here today but I went out and got in just under 5.5. By the end it was a little slick but the snow was falling lightly and it made for a nice peaceful run. I am hoping the weather gets even 10 degrees warmer to make the longer runs a little easier. I can't really complain though when you compare what we are getting with other parts of the country.

Vicky - great job on your 15!
Roselark - Welcome
AFM - unfortunately, had to skip the Valentine virtual 5K I had planned. Had to go to work unexpectedly and never made it to the gym. :guilty:
It started snowing earlier tonight. Supposedly we're only getting 2-3 inches, but that's still more than we need. Hoping rush hour is not a mess in the morning.

Hi all,
Sitting here watching the end of Team USA against Helvetica (Switezerland) in hockey. Also surfing and just found out that the sports medecine doctor I went to is the Team Physician for Team USA--the whole delegation! Sorta cool.
roselark Welcome and good luck. You will do this and we will all help.
Vicky Wow-back to back runs. Almost a Goofy plan! i am notorious for not signing up for my races til just beforehand. Except I did sign up for DLR half. Will maybe do one in March. Would really like to run away to FL and do one in the sunshine and warm, but that won't likely happen!
Carrie DH is a hard core cyclist (and fast runner) so Kensington is a lark for him. Yeah, sometimes I can't stand it!
Did my speedwork today--tough, as usual-- and then yoga. On a bright note, I finished all my miles in the Cabot Cheese over 50 challenge. Also won a prize. Yippee!
Now it's time to watch more Olympics (and I guess cook dinner) and try on my new wetsuit!

Hi All
Just checking in with everyone.
Roselark - Welcome, I know where you are coming from. I actually did my first 5K 2 1/2 years ago. Did my 2nd 5K In June, did a 10K in September, and I'm planning on a 1/2 marathon in May. Just take it easy and don't try to add speed or distance too quickly.
Frank - Congratulation on getting out to a race.
Hockeychic - Congratulation on getting the goofy and for getting started back up again.
Personally, this has been a couple of bad weeks. We haven't had as much snow as the east coast but we've been getting snow consistantly. On Monday, it took me 4 hours to get home from work because of the snow (and my not liking driving in it). It normally only takes 1 1/2 hours.
I'm still not comfortable walking on the snow/ice so I've been having trouble getting my weekday walks in. I'm going to try to get out of the house early enough to stop by the gym on campus and get a walk in. Unfortunately, they have a class in the fitness room during my dinner break. I was going to do my long walk there on Saturday after class but they were having a basketball tournament and had the fitness room closed. I ended up doing my long walk, only 3 miles this past week (my first rest week), outside. I found a spot without much traffic that was well plowed, actually dry and about 1/4 mile long, I walked it twice at the beginning and end when up a hill into the town and walked around town. The hill has a fairly steep grade so that was part of the reason for the slowness. I'm going to try again this Saturday to get into the gym on campus for my long walk. This week it is supposed to be 6 miles.

I am officially doing the Broad Street Run with Team in Training. I got my website this morning. I am so much happier now that I know I will have them to train with in the spring and it will hoprfully roll right into me mentoring with them for the fall season (which starts training in a April or some time soon). That will then roll right into the winter season with training for Disney! Woohoo!

Hi everyone,
This is my first time posting on this thread, but you all are so nice I feel welcome already:hug: I've been "running" or wogging for around 9 years now and still going strong. I've completed 3 half marathons (the DL Half in '07, the Baltimore Half in '08, and the WDW Half in '10). I think I'm finally ready to take the mental leap to the whole so I'm planning on getting my Mickey medal in '11.:scared1: To say I'm a bit nervous is an understatement, but I know everyone here will be a great support. My current plans are to run a 10K in June hoping to do well enough it will get me out of the last corral at Disney. Then I'll do the Baltimore Half again in October. That is one hilly race so it will be a great training run! Then it's on to Disney World for the big one in January!
For today I just did a 3 miler on the treadmill. There are still piles of snow all over my normal running routes and probably will be for another month so I won't be getting outside anytime soon:sad2:

Megan - Congrats on TNT for Broad Street!
We postponed last nights run. Probablly a good thing for several reasons. I pick up new oorthodics today, so I can see how they feel tonight and see if I want to try them for teh 10-miler Saturday. Debating, as I don't want to be still recovering frm blisters from Princess. We'll see how tonight goes and take it from there.

Jenny- Had it not been for a friend's wedding the Baltimore full would have been my first attempt at 26.2. In the end it ended up being The Niagara Falls International instead.
It ended up being a great day to get in a medium-long run here in northeastern Ohio (33 and 26 with wind chill) so I went out and did 8.11. The legs were a little sore but I think it is because I started working in more weights on the legs to make up for the lower miles.
I'm looking forward to my spring races, including the two halves.

Frank So have you run the Baltimore full? It is a tough course, lots of those mid-Atlantic hills (which are nothing like the overpasses they call hills at Disney:rolleyes:) That is one reason I'm doing my first full at Disney World (though the main reason is I love the Disney medals):goodvibes

Jenny - :welcome: Baltimore is still on my list of races to do, but I think we'll only shoot for the half when the time comes. But now that you mention hills... I guess it can't be any worse than what I've already run, but I like the idea of flat courses now that I've seen Myrtle Beach! DH and I have Baltimore on the back burner for this year, so we'll see.
Jennifer - 50-60 miles? :worship: And I was feeling good about 18-20 for this week. :lmao: But then, I'm not training for a full right now either. Half marathons only until at least October, if then. There's still that goal I didn't meet in January that is hanging over my head...
Jeremy - The weather is making it hard on all of us. Fortunately, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed, all our snow is melted and the forecast is for 50 degrees + for the next 5 days. I'm delirious! Just hang in there and keep doing what you can. Any mileage is better than none.
Maura/Carrie - I'm really curious about Kensington! I want to see these hills.
Did 5 miles last night with DH. Scheduled for 10 tomorrow with my friends, but we're talking about maybe doing 12 to prepare for Tobacco Road on 3/21. If not this weekend, maybe next, but since the forecast is for 53 and sunny, we'd probably better take advantage of it while we can!

Carrie No plans onthe tri's. I sorta bought the wetsuit to have in case I get motivated to do another one. The local series that a friend of mine does (at Island Lake) has just added an Olympic distance to the sprint distance, so I might try that. There is also an Olympic one in Cadillace (Lumberman) that looks like it could be a good first time Olympic (same day as Steehead)
Kim Welcome back to the wonderful world of training....and go, Team Canada! Didya get any of the hot item mittens? Seems like Canada always has the Olympic clothes that people want to buy!
Jeremy Keep up the good work. I know it's tough in the wintertime to dodge snow/ice. Just take it easy, be careful, and don't get too hung up on pace/distance--do what you can!
Jenny Congrats on signing up for the full. I know exactly how you feel--like "What in God's name did I just do?!" BUt with training, you will get there. And you have a better race base under your belt than I did when I did the Mickey last month.
Frank I, too, have added in more leg weights this year. Last year, I figured "why work on legs when you're using them so much to run?". But I'm taking a different approach in order to become stronger and maybe avoid the kind of aches/pains/injuries that plagued me just before the full and even a little now.
Jackie Kensington is nice (although I think others would scoff at the "hills"--it' all relative) Good luck on your upcoming runs and enjoy the warm temps--I am still craving my usual mid-winter "run away to somplace warm"--but that isn't going to happen this year.
As for me....same old , same old. Finally tried on my wetsuit--it might have to go back. Feels really snug and almost had a mini-panic attack getting out of it. Will try again today, maybe soak in a tub (no lakes to go try it out this time of year!) and if still not ahppy, will exchange up a size.

Jackie - Maura's a goddess and the only person I know who says there are no hills there. While they aren't all huge, tehy just keep coming at you andn some of teh downs are too steep to recover. there is one that goes for a half mile. Here's the GPS info. Only look at the first 8.5 miles, the rest was forgettign to turn it off and driving home.

It is a beautiful course around a lake and they keep the path clear in teh winter. It' sby my parents, so I only have to run there about once a month or if the wweather is too bad at home (about 2.5 hours away).
Pat - Hang in tehre! :wizard: Those darn injuries never show up at a good time. :(
Maura - IL hs an olympic? may have to check it out. DOn't make extra trips to teh area often, though. Maybe it will fall into one of my regular trips.
Did 45 min on teh TM last night. Proud of my self for mixing it up by increase pace adn increasing slope. It did go more quickly too.

Maura- I have the same "no need to work the legs" thinking during the summer. I do some light work but nothing heavy. In the winter, especially when the weather isn't cooperating" I hit the legs a little more. I also got a road bike at the end of last year and since it was late in the season I plan on using it much more this year. I figure that a couple of steep climbs will take care of the leg workout :cool1:.
The weather has been pretty running-friendly around here this week so I was finally able to get in a proper running week. Hopefully it will stay about the same so I can start to ramp the miles up for the next few weeks.
I always look forward to the race season but for some reason this year I am more excited then usual. Maybe because I know it will end with the Disney full next January.

Pat - Don't you just hate it when the body doesn't respect your race schedule? Hope the muscle heals soon so you can get back out there. That's a pretty aggressive schedule you have ahead of you!
Carrie - Thanks for the Kensington info. We have a regular route here that would probably be similar - lots of long, gradual uphills with some fairly steep ones thrown in just to keep it interesting. The scenery for yours sounds much nicer, though!
Maura - Temp hit 65 today. Absolutely beautiful! Unfortunately, temps are headed back down for the week. Spring has to be around the corner somewhere!
Did a 10 mile LR yesterday with seriously negative splits. We were doing R3/W1 - first mile was a 12:29, last one was an 11:19. Then DH and a friend and I walked an additional 2 miles around the lake for a total of 12 miles. 4 weeks until the next half!

I ran my first half marathon today! It was much harder to maintain my goal pace than I thought it would be. The weather was decent, in the 30's, but the race was along the coast in NH so the wind was killer at some points. Overall, I met my goal exactly. I wanted a 9 minute pace and I finished at 1:57:59 placing 31 out of 87 for my age group and 562 overall. I was so happy and so exhausted at the finish! Now my legs are screaming at me! Hi everyone! Did a 13 miler on Saturday and it went pretty well. I did the hilly course again and the rolling hills section still felt tough to me but when I went back and checked the Garmin stats, I actually did that section just over 11 m/m. So not too slow (for me anyway :rotfl: ). Sunday I was suppose to run 5 miles - but I ended up going out really, really slow and I just didn't feel into it. My hips were pinching a bit so I cut it short at 2.5 miles :( It was warm and sunny out so I don't know what happened. Just one of those short runs that feels like it's 3x as long as it really is I guess. I feel a little badly about it because the snow seems to be coming down today so I'm not sure if my plans to run tomorrow morning will happen.
smacky - Congrats on your first half! And a fantastic time too!! I'd love to be able to run as fast as you do!

Maura - Glad to hear you got in your miles before the white stuff hits. The forecast here is calling for snow all week but so far nothing seems to be sticking. I'm still not looking forward to the drive back home tonight.
Frank - I'm another one looking forward to this racing season as well. Not sure I'll break any records but I'm looking forward to trying out new and longer distances leading up to next January.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. This weekend was better. On Thursday, I hit the gym before work. I over did things a little bit and felt a little lightheaded afterwards. The room was hot though and I wasn't expecting that. I went back to the gym again on Saturday, and took it a little easier and made sure I had plenty of fluids during my walk. I did much better. Sunday was a not horrible so I got outside to do my long walk. I completed the 6mi for the week. It started sprinkling at about 3 1/2 miles but never rained hard and ended up stopping after about 30 minutes. So, even though things have been crazy, I've been able to get my long walks in each week.

Smacky1- Congratulations on your first half. How long after finishing did it take you to decide what the next one is you are going to do? I was looking at doing the ING in Hartford last fall, I image you ran kind of close to there since NH doesn't have a lot of coast.
Maura- XC skis huh? I have no desire to downhill ski but I think XC would be fun.
Carrie- Yeah, I think having tough goals help keep you optimistic. I have a lot of fun races this year too which helps too.
Jeremy- Where in Ohio are you? We had rain all day but it finally let up so I could get out this evening.
It was looking like a miserable day but the rain stopped just long enough to get in a quick 4.5 evening. The week is looking like it might go downhill but they have been overly cautious up here so far this winter so I am hoping we dodge another predicted storm. It helps that the lake is frozen and we aren't getting the lake effect snow any longer this year.

I actually signed up for a race series call the Will Run for Beer race series so I had a race schedule planned for this winter. It includes another half marathon in April. My race was in Hampton NH which is a little over 2 hours from Hartford. They are doing another half and full marathon in October called the Hampton Rockfest. After this race series I may start training for that. I have to tell you that the quote you have from Lance Armstrong has gotten me through many tough training moments! Thanks for posting it.
