Hi Everyone,
It seems like there are lots of people going to China this year. I thought I would start this thread in hopes that everyone travelling to China will post. Maybe we will be able to share ideas and experiences in one thread.
We are going on the July 4th tour! This will be our fourth trip to China. We are very excited and eager to "talk" about our adventure!

It is funny that you posted your observation because my husband and I were also talking about that! I guess ABD will be busy in China this summer.
Sitting here in cold and snowy Ohio makes me dream of summer and vacation! I know from being in China last summer that it will definitely be hot there!

That brings up an interesting question, is everyone taking kids with them and what are their ages. We are taking my daughter, who will turn 14 on the trip and my son who just turned 10 we have traveled many times but never a flight longer than 6 hours.

We are taking our daughters. They will be 10 and 8. (They both have end of the summer birthdays.) The 12 hour flight isn't a great treat, but the adventure at the end will be worth it! Last time I got them each a new DS game and they also watched the movies on the plane. They were able to sleep on the plane. I am going to try to bring more snacks for in the room and on the plane. The airplane food was declared to be "yucky" by both my girls.
Getting over jetlag in China wasn't difficult because we were so excited. However the jetlag once we got home kicked our hineys.
I am glad to have this group to discuss our trip! :cool1:

So, why did everyone chose China for their adventure?
Q's My Princess

We chose China because our DD is studying Mandarin and a visit to China helps reinforce her language skills, plus it is somewhere Mommy & Daddy have never visited! :wizard:

I have been wanting to do an ABD for the last 3 - 4 years, but my husband didn't want to as we are DVC owners and he wanted to get the full value of Disneyworld while our kids were younger.
So we decided finally this was the year and really thought we would do London/Paris (our kids are in french immersion) so we ordered the video and watched it as a family and everyone seemed more interested in China (also almost double the vacation time but not double the price).
This trip seems to have something for everyone and I am sure it will not disappoint.

This will be our fourth trip to China. It is such a fascinating and beautiful place. It is really interesting to see how China has changed since our first trip in 2000.
I am so impressed with your focus on teaching your children other languages. My oldest daughter and I tried attending Chinese language school, but we weren't very successful! I think the problem was only going once a week. Immersion is the only way to learn.

How interesting to live in Shanghai. Why did you move to China? What do you like most about Shanghai?
We have been to China three times, but haven't been to Shanghai. The closest we got was to Hefei in Anhui. (Not very close, I know...)
Thanks for offering to share what you are experiencing. I am very interested in learning from you.

First of all, Xin Nian Kuai Le! (Happy New Year) from Shanghai. We woke this morning to a blanket of snow after all the fireworks last night. Snow is unusual here in Shanghai, so it is neat that it happened on New Years Day.
Anyway, we moved to China for my husband's job. He oversees financial operations for Asia-Pacific region for his multinational company. We originally agreed to 3 years here and have recently extended another three years. I cannot claim to be an expert on China, since a lot about this country is still something of a mystery to me, but I do have great understanding of a foreigner's experience in China.
My experience will not really be like yours though since coming here for a visit and trying to settle and create a normal life here for a family are very different issues. We have settled in now and enjoy living here but it definitely has its challenges and it took years to begin to feel at home here. Foreigners who do not look Asian in appearance still attract a LOT of attention. We have three blond sons. The chinese are fascinated with their blond hair and fair appearance, but also the concept of having three sons is akin to the Impossible Dream here, so we tend to attract a lot of curious followers when we are in areas where the people don't see many foreign faces. There have been times, especially after our third son was born, when we traveled surrounded by a mob and felt like Angelina and Brad.... Those of you bringing blond children may want to prepare them for that. It can be quite scary.
I don't want to tell you too much of my thoughts and impressions here since I would like you to have your own first impressions upon arrival instead. Kind of like not wanting to tell someone everything about a great ride before they get on it...
I'll be glad to answer any questions though. I think since this trip is with Disney, you will be somewhat insulated and perhaps not see the real china bathrooms, etc.:scared1: Haha.

What you saw in Anhui was much more the 'real China' than Shanghai. Culturally a place like that will be more interesting than Shanghai. Beijing is also more interesting. Shanghai is trying to make itself into a modern business city. Most of the traditional beautiful Chinese architecture building have been removed in Shanghai though to make room for modern buildings. It is kind of sad since from a glance, it can look just like Chicago or another place. It is an exciting place to be though and an exciting time to be here since China is really changing itself so quickly.

The rapidly changing face of China was the most shocking part between our trips. We were there in July 2000 and then again in July 2002 and the changes we saw especially regarding buildings and capitalism were amazing. Then we didn't return until July 2009 and were blown away by the "progress".
I completely agree about the Chinese reaction to blonde hair. I have "blonde" hair and people wanted to take pictures with me and wanted to touch my hair. At first I thought it was kind of fun, but that faded quickly.
I am also amazed at the way that if they are interested in something (like my hair) that they just openly stare or violate your personal space. Oh, we were also amazed at how at a breakfast buffet many Chinese will just push you out of the way to get what they want. One morning last summer my youngest daughter was trying to get food from the breakfast bar and someone just took it away from her. Oh, and the pushy way they tried to get us to buy things was overwhelming at times.
Things we loved included little kids saying "What is your American name?" and practicing speaking English with us. We love the pride many people had in explaining things to us or showing us art work. Oh, one man we talked to was really interested in talking to our daughters about what it is like to have a sister. He always wanted a sibling, and couldn't have one. I really like getting off the plane and walking into a completely different world. Everything looks different, smells different, sounds different and it completely overwhelms your senses and allows you to have completely new experiences.
Thanks for sharing about Shanghai. I am so glad you joined our discussion.

We are currently debating whether to stay an extra day in Hong Kong and do some touring on our own, is anyone else doing this or if you have already done the trip, have you done this?
Any hotel recommendations, we would like to be closer to the action (I would think waterfront), don't really want to stay in Disney Hotel the extra night.
We need to decide soon because I have not booked our flights for our trip yet and really need to get that done!!! (probably the last major detail of the trip to do, other than pay for it LOL)

I typically go to Asia 4 times a year and have stayed in Hong Kong several times. If you want to stay on the water, I would recommend either the Renaissance or the Intercontinental. Both are in Kowloon and provide great access to the Avenue of the Stars and great views of HK island and the nightly laser show. Although the rooms are smaller when compared to a room in the US, most rooms in HK are. Both hotels are reasonably priced. Feel free to ask any questions about HK.

I have a question for any past China visitors. I read in one of the ABD recommended books that China is a very conservative dress country, including no bare feet, even in sandals. Is this still the case? Socks and sandals:eek: Also exactly how conservative dress do they mean. We would probably be wearing longer shorts and t-shirts or tank tops for touring, is that acceptable?

We didn't have any issues with this--sandals would be fine, shorts, t-shirts etc.

Apparently there is a huge pink Barbie store in Shanghai. She is very popular there and they have a store with dolls, clothes, a restaurant, and a spa. We had big plans to visit there before our trip was interrupted last year. Our ABD guide, Daisy, said it is really spectacular.

We are looking at doing the China trip in 2011, so I am interested in what your thoughts are after you get back. As there do not seem to be any "adults only" trips anymore (we did the adults only trip to Peru last year that was great), I would like your ideas as to what time of the year is better to visit.
We are staying an extra night in HK. Decided not to mess with moving hotels, keep the airport transfer etc.
We are going to do the HK tour on the last 'tour' day and spend our extra day at HK Disneyland.
This was also our idea, was it easy to add thru ABD? We added a day prior to our trip to Peru, and it was great to have a day to decompress before the tour started.
I will be following this thread to see what all your impressions are.

We are also booked for China July 4! So glad to hear of others on that trip. I am traveling w/ my daughter age 25 (but she loves kids!) who decided that she had reached "a quarter century" and it was time to see the world. She invited me instead of going w/ people her own age b/c "mom, you will want to do the silly things that I do, like seeing pandas and HK Disney"!! Looking forward to meeting those of you on our trip.

Called my travel agent today to pay off balance (paying a few days early) but since we are from Canada our dollar is doing really well with the US dollar, and we wanted to take advantage of the exchange rate while it is really good.
Our travel agent also found out for us that our trip (July 18) is 92% booked with a lot of kids on the trip ranging in age from 6 - 17 including our two, so that will be great.

Given the hot temperatures and likely rainy conditions, what are you bringing to wear in the rain? I'm debating whether to bring simple, inexpensive ponchos or invest in better rain gear--gortex, etc.
Also, my doctor recently suggested Hep A vaccines. Anybody else getting those?

I have read some non-fiction a while ago: Life and Death in Shanghai by Nien Cheng and Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang. Really liked both of them.
I also just read 'Undress me in the Temple of Heaven' which is a travel memoir. Interesting to see how different China is now from the mid 1980s.

I enjoy reading about China - maybe someday I can take enough time off work to enjoy traveling there! Some of my favorites: ANYTHING by Amy Tan (some are set in China, some in the US), "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" - Lisa See (she also has another book that I haven't read), "The Good Earth" - Pearl Buck, "Spring Moon" & "Legacies, A Chinese Mosaic" by Bette Bao Lord. Happy reading!

I'm so excited for everyone! We have been to China twice, both times for adoptions so one day we would like to do a "pleasure" trip instead of "business!" We spent some time in Beijing and then to the South in Hefei, Anhui (as someone said, the "real" China!) and then with my son, all the way to the North Korean border in Shenyang, Lioning Province(also real-a Wal-Mart and KFC being the highlights!). Then for both kids all the way south near Hong Kong to Guangzhou.
Yes, the Chinese have no sense of personal space and are beyond curious about non-Asians. We had the experience of a whole busload of people rushing out of their seats and staring at the windows at us because we were standing there with two little Chinese kids. Quite the experience!
My daughter was four when we went back for my son. She had a great time and got lots of attention. We had horrible jetlag the second time because she slept all the way over on the plane and then was totally off and wouldn't let us sleep. Try to get as much sleep as possible the first few hours you are there and you'll be fine. That's what we did the first time and we were OK.
Have a great trip! I'll be looking forward to hearing what you have to say and any pictures!

Nice to finally connect with someone on our trip. We are also a family of 4, mom, dad, son 10 and daughter 13 turning 14 on the trip. I just sent my Visa applications away today, I think the process is a little different for us, we live in Canada, but all we had to do was get a passport photo fill out a form (was not to bad) and send that with our passports to the our travel agent and they do the rest. Hopefully I did everything right!!
Are you guys going early or staying longer. We are going one day early and staying one extra day in Hong Kong.

We are not able to come early or stay longer because of work. I know the time change will be a big adjustment. We've done it before to South Africa and to Australia last summer. The kids do better than the adults! We have to get pictures for our visas and then I can mail them back. This will be the first country we've been to where none of us speak a word of the language and it is a little intimidating. We're trying to learn a few basic phrases. Starting to get excited. I think the kids will be more enthusiastic when school ends in 6 weeks! I love reading the discussion pages and will be waiting to hear what the May 30th group has to say.

If you're staying there for a couple of nights, I'm sure all of the hotels you (and we :)) will be staying at will offer laundry services. You'll pay through the nose, though.

We actually used the laundry in the hotel in Shanghai last year, and yes it was a little pricey. But I also know that the guides were willing to direct us to some local laundries where we could get the clothes done for a lot cheaper.

I wanted to post a good site for information on traveling to/in China for all. About.com has lots of great links and articles, including travel w/ children.
I will highlight this one for all of you to read. I cannot post the link here, but I highly recommend searching the site for "squat toilet china" to get some useful info. :scared1:
The articles on what to pack, especially medications (over the counter stuff) should also be helpful.
Looking forward to "meeting" others who will be on the July 4 tour.

Hi Kathy! Thanks for sharing a great website. It sounds like you are very organized. Making the last payment opens you up to relaxing and dreaming of the trip! The visa from our last trip to China just expired yesterday, so now we can apply for the one for this trip. We are going to do that this week.
So, as you dream of the trip, what part are you really excited about? For me it is the pandas. (I have already told our children that I will probably embarrass them by crying! I think it is an amazing opportunity to see them up close.) My husband is looking forward to Guilin, we have never been to that part of China. Our youngest DD is just up for any adventure, any time! You probably won't believe this, but our oldest DD is still talking about the great broccolli from the last trip. She says Chinese broccolli tastes better than Ohio broccolli.:rotfl:

Since I volunteer with Operation Smile for medical missions, I have had a lot of foreign travel experience and experience in coping with LONG flights. I have put together a list of suggestions that are too long to post here, but that I would be happy to send to anyone who wants it (just drop me a note - my email is carouselkr at aol). Also, I would suggest everyone look at the CDC.gov website and search the topic travelers diarrhea for some excellent info.
I have been twice to China in the past, and mostly I am looking forward to sharing this trip with my DD (age 25). She is really excited about a trip that includes seeing and hopefully, holding, baby pandas. Her first trip to WDW was in the womb so she has Disney in her blood! We are both really looking forward to Hong Kong Disney as our first visit to a Disney park outside of the US (we plan to visit them all eventually!). We are also really excited about the 2010 Shanghai Expo World's Fair as my DD's field is Interactive Digital Media (future imagineer someday) and will likely forgo the Disney activities in Shanghai to attend the Expo, even though it will be my birthday (7/11) while we are there.
My recent cruise on the Disney Magic (14-day transatlantic crossing) has gotten me very excited to experience the Disney "magic" :wizard: on this ABD tour!
I cannot wait to meet the rest of those going on the July 4 trip!! If you are going on any other trip, I am still happy to send along my suggestion list.
I really have to learn how to make up a "signature" for this site!! Meanwhile...

2GirlsMama,
Tell your hubby that the Guilin portion is amazing. The cruise was probably one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen and the hotel is amazing as well. And after the first week, you will truly appreciate the slower pace of these couple of days. And if he's feeling very adventurous, have him try the snake wine!

Thanks, monydave! He is curious (and I am, too) what is snake wine? He is very adventurous, so I am sure that is in his future! My oldest DD is an artist, and I think she will really enjoy drawing some of the sites in Guilin.

The snake wine was on the cruise ship as we went through the gumdrop mountains. The large jug contained wine with dead vipers in it and as our local guide told us, it makes a man virile if he drinks it. There were 4 of us who were brave enough to try it and we all lived to tell about it. Plus it made for some great pictures!

Man! You weren't kidding when you said "adventurous"! I told him about it and he didn't seem convinced that he would try snake wine! We had Brian and Juan(sp?) as our guides and loved them. And yes, the pictures, video and story behind the snake wine are something to talk about when you get home. And don't even get me started on the ear cleaning at the Face Changing opera in Chengdu. As Brian told us, we were the most adventurous group he had taken on that trip. And tell your husband the snake wine tastes just like doing a shot of tequilla.

As well as following the CDC guidelines, remember to strictly follow food safety on your trip to China. Never eat anything that hasn't been peeled or cooked. They may look good but don't eat those strawberries on the breakfast buffet!
We traveled back to China in April 2009 with 12 families, taking our tween-aged daughters back to China for them to see the country of their birth. By drinking only bottled water, boiling water in the tea kettle in the room to brush your teeth, and following "peel or cook" rules, we kept all of the girls healthy.
The group went in various directions in China to visit their orphanage cities, but we made sure to end our trip in Hong Kong, staying at Disneyland. We had a blast being in the park and visiting Hong Kong sites. Have a great trip with Disney!

We used that service for our Visas, too. BUT we made a mistake. We checked and triple checked our paperwork. Then DH decided to make copies of everything Then he took it to the post office. We got a call from the visa service saying they didn't get our youngest daughter's passport. We completely freaked out. Then he remembered he had copied everything. There was her passport still in the printer where he made the copy. He went back to Fed EX and now we should be okay.

Thanks for the reminder about checking the flights. We are on United out of Chicago O'Hare. DH checked today and said they typically are running a few hours late for departure because of plane maintance.
I have never thought of having an outfit made in Beijing. That sounds really interesting. Last year both of our daughters got a "make-over" in Beijing. They went to China with long hair and came home with really cute short haircuts. Youngest DD is thinking of getting another Chinese make-over this year, but oldest DD says the massage they give you hurts too much!
Did anyone watch the AMAZING RACE? We were thrilled they spent so much time in Shanghai. (Although all four of us were rooting for the cowboys! We just love them: "oh my gravy".:rotfl:
Sorry for so many random thoughts in one message!:)

Oh, I forgot..we definitely want to go to the Shanghai Expo (World's Fair). DH just got a copy of the Beijing magazine with a huge article about the Expo. He also watches that Chinese channel (available through Dish Network), it seems like they have almost constant coverage of the Expo.
I am getting so excited for the trip. I went to Target today to start purchasing supplies. (Chinese chocolate doesn't taste good to us. If you have a chocolate addiction -my youngest DD - bring your own!)
Another random thought: Does anyone know if Bonine (Spelling?) or Dramamine (spelling?) works better? Our daughter has a problem with motion sickness on long flights. I have heard that Bonine might be better because it doesn't cause so much drowsiness.

Our girls are big milk drinkers, but last year they said the milk in China tasted awful and they refused to drink it. They are planning on going without milk in China! If she likes to eat veggies she will be very happy. Our daughters both like veggies and rice so they are happy with the meals. There are always kid friendly options. (My kids are weird, they prefer adult selections! My oldest daughter would happily eat broccoli for every meal.)
We will definitely bring some M&Ms and gum. I haven't thought about other snacks yet....

It was the Babe Salon very near the Penninsula. We just took a very short walk. They didn't speak any English, and we don't speak any Chinese, but we worked it out really well. My mom said that was the best she has ever seen my youngest daughters hair look! It was short and sassy. They do some type of massage, and both girls said it wasn't relaxing, it was painful. It was on their head, neck and shoulders. It was very fun. I took before and after pictures. I have to admit, I'm not brave enough to get a make over from someone I can't converse with, but both girls thought it was fun.

Our daughter is a huge milk drinker. She didn't like the milk when we went to Italy a couple of years ago and managed without milk for ten days. She likes adult things like steak. To date the only rice she eats is 'cheesy rice' like rice-a-roni! I want to take her to dim sum soon to try some things.
I think someone already asked about this - are people getting any 'shots' in preparation?

05-17-2010, 12:04 PM
Talk to your doctor. Get the pukey medicine for tummy yukkies and the antibiotics for similar (phenegrin and... something, can't remember). Doctor was best to let us know what to take medicine/shot wise. Let them know whee you are going, they will let you know what you might want to take and what you don't need to take.
We got Hepititis A shots for the China trip because we knew we probably weren't going to be only eating where the crowds were and no one wanted to catch anything from places like the Night Market (which is TOTALLY awesome and would highly recommend it as a stop in Beijing if only to look at the people and the food... bubble tea isn't bad... DS ate all kinds of bugs).
We had a couple of more finicky eaters on that trip and they bent over backward to make sure everyone had something they liked.
OH... and beware of the first dinner in Chengdu. They like it on the spicy side... DS also ate duck face and fish face and spicy tofu... some of the food even made him (he who likes spicy and eats anything) make faces a couple time.

Our doctor had me review our travel plans with Kaiser's "travel nurse", who then reviewed the CDC's recommendations and our immunization history. DH & I were due for our 2nd Hep A shot after our trip to Guatemala a couple of years ago. DD and I are taking a "live" Thyphoid pill and I needed to have my H1N1.

I am glad to see that ABD is providing help in getting to the Expo since it is the chance of a lifetime! My daughter's company will have a couple of installations there, so we will definitely be attending, and seeing the China pavilion(s) where their stuff will be. Hope to hear from others on the current trip before we leave on ours.

I spent 1 1/2 days at the Expo last week on travel not pertaining to anything Disney.
Be prepared to not see as much as you want to. The crowds are unbelievable and the wait times for the popular pavillions are 3-4 hours long. We had reservations and were able to see the Chinese Pavillion and it is wonderful. We were only able to see about 5 others, most of which, the outside of the buildings were more impressive than the inside.
You will be walking alot! We were only able to see about 1/4 of the whole Expo during that time. The buildings are impressive to see, I bet they were beautiful at night but we were unable to stay until dark to see them.
If you have any questions feel free to PM me!

Question for people leaving on July 18, has anyone received their boxes yet?
Mine will go to my travel agent and then come to me (Canadian), so I just want to keep on top of that. Thanks!

My family is on the July 4th trip, and while I'm getting very excited, I'm begining to stress about packing. We're flying Continental so I'd checked baggage restrictions on their website, and I also called ABD about the domestic China flights.
According to both Continental and ABD, a checked bag, a carry on, and a personal item (purse, backpack, etc) are allowed. HOWEVER, for the carryon, Continental limits the weight at 40 lbs, but ABD advises that for domestic flights in China, the max weight is 11 lbs. Yikes! I guess I'm going to need to rethink my package strategies.
Can anyone who has taken this trip previously--or is currently in China--comment?
Thanks!

Abd never weighed carry ons. But you don't want to lug around 40 lbs everyday. It is a lot of walking. Abd didnt care how many checked bags while in country or weight of them. On way home we did have to follow united luggage rules.

ALSO, can anyone who has been on the trip give me some advice?
How much money would you recommend bringing? Also, do we really need separate currency for China AND Hong Kong? I just don't want to have too much money but it sounds like credit cards are not really used there!

Sorry if I wasn't clear with my original question. I wouldn't lug around a 20 inch rolling bag everyday--we'll use backpacks for cameras and everyday needs. But I would like to have the security of carrying a 20 inch rolling bag onto domestic China flights along with a purse/backpack while my larger bag is checked. Is that doable?

Just arrived home today from our adventure! We brought US$ for our Adventure guide tips only. When we arrived in Beijing we used our ATM card to get RMB, as needed. Yes, there are two different currencies for mainland China and Hong Kong. We used the ATM at Hong Kong Disneyland for HK$.

It seems like the cash question is not as difficult as we are anticipating.
Our worry is access to ATMs will be difficult in China. Is that the case?
Right now, we are planning to bring US dollars for the guides and also to bring some RMB with us as cash to spend.
Any feedback reassurances would be appreciated!
As well as tips to adjust to the time difference upon arrival in China! (Should be fun!)

There are plenty of ATM's...in the airport, near the hotels (with the exception of the Hotel of Modern Art), and near most of the shopping areas (including the World Expo).
As for tips on jetlag when you land in China...
1) try to get on China time when you board the plane
2) hopefully you are arriving before the tour begins and can use those days to acclimate
3) if you wake-up around 4-5 am in China, don't go back to sleep. I did and it wasn't until I stopped that my sleep became regular.
I am sure others will give you tips....above all have a great time!
I was very anxious before our trip....worried that it would be SO different from the USA. I was wrong...in almost every city we were in, we could have been in any major metropolitan city in the world, NYC, SF, London, Paris, Rome...be prepared for people that are just like you and me.

Such thoughtful advice! I completely agree. This will be our fourth trip to China and I have always experienced that going there the time difference isn't nearly as difficult an adjustmen as when we return home.
I think the best advice about going to China is to enjoy everything and try new things. Some things are just like home, and some things are very different. It is all interesting.

1. Bag for daily "adventures" - I'm not normally a backpack kinda girl. Or a purse kinda girl. I do not carry one. Ever. When we are in WDW, I use a fanny pack for essentials only (camera, sunscreen, tickets, credit cards).
For those who have been - what bag did you take/need to take with you on each day's excursions? Just looking for insider tips!
2. Hotel soap - Not high maintence when it comes to toiletries. Did the hotels provide soap/shampoo? Any insights there?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Stacey,
Happy to help answer your questions...
1) I brought my handbag with us on our excursions and half of the time I left it on the coach while we were off exploring. Use your fanny pack if that is what you are accustomed to.
2) Regarding toiletries...each hotel provided everything you will ever need....toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner, nail kits, etc.
Hope that helps!

Hi Stacey!
I can't wait to meet you in less than two weeks!:cool1: I am still using the nail clippers from the Peninsula in Beijing! It is a beautiful, well-equipped, elegant hotel. There are all sorts of high end shops in the hotel (like Coach and other expensive stuff...I am more of a Target girl myself so I can't remember what stores were there.) The rooms even have a door bell. Everything you could possibly need is available.
I like to take my back pack so I can't help with the purse ideas. I would like to mention that you might want to bring a travel pack of toilet paper with you. We each carried it in our backpacks and had the need for it!

Hi Stacey,
Tips for the flight....hmmm...that is a tough one! I was so excited and anxious about the trip, it seemed to fly by (no pun intended ). We were lucky enough to upgrade, so our DD (9), watched every movie available.
The best advice I can give you is: Tell yourself and your family what time it is in Beijing when you board the plane. Be sure to change your watches. Keep telling yourself what time it is there and convince your body to sleep when it is nighttime in China. Secondly, when you arrive in Beijing, try and stay awake as late as possible on your first night. It will be very tough, but it will payoff when you can sleep through the night.
Don't be anxious about the trip...you are in the best of hands with the ABD guides. Not sure who you will have, maybe Jason and Leo, and they will take care of every little detail, leaving you and your family to relax and enjoy your trip.

Greetings from the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel! The official tour finished up last night :( but we have a couple of extra days here on our own. We went into Hong Kong on the metro all by ourselves today -- it was strange to be driving the activities ourselves. I miss my fellow adventurers and our wonderful guides already. If any of you get James and/or Huan (James is doing the next trip, I believe), tell him that Steve and Tina say hi!
I won't say much about the tour itself -- you really have to experience it for yourselves. I will say that it was a wonderful experience for the whole family, and that it really opened up our eyes about China and the Chinese people. My favorite memories revolve around interacting with the people themselves.
A few tips/notes for upcoming adventurers:
Adjusting to the time change -- we really didn't have any problem. They key for me was the same as it always is when I fly to Europe or Asia: arrive very tired, and don't go to sleep until bedtime. I didn't sleep on the plane. Our flight came in at 3PM or so, and we got to the hotel at about 5:30. We had a relaxing (though overly expensive) dinner at the Peninsula, then went upstairs and crashed at about 8PM. We woke up at 4 or 5 AM for the first few days, but that faded quickly.
ATMs weren't really a problem for us, though I know of several others who had trouble getting money here in Hong Kong at first. The real issue for us was the daily withdrawal limit, which was 1500 yuan for us. That's not really all that much money, especially if you need to stock up quickly. We ended up calling the bank from Hong Kong to get a one day increase in our limit, as we needed to gather money for tips for the guides.
There will be one or two points in the trip where you will likely need cash: Chengdu (if you're going to do the Panda thing) and Hong Kong (for tipping the guides). Plan ahead (i.e., get money early), and all will be well. We didn't do that, and both times we ended up scrambling.
The Panda encounter is 1000 yuan per person. The handlers said that family members not taking part could step in for a group picture at the end. BTW, a few of the younger adventurers were told that they were too small, and they didn't get to hold one.
In Beijing, be sure and visit the Night Market. It's just down the street from the hotel. The sights, sounds, and (especially) smells will stay with me for a long time. I didn't eat anything, though others did.
I would *highly* recommend talking to your doctor and getting a course of antibiotics for traveler's diarrhea for *everyone* in your party. I had a mild bout in Chengdu, and it cleared up instantly when I took the antibiotics. A few others had varying degrees of this, and I suspect they wish they'd brought some along. Be sure and bring pepto bismol and imodium as well. Let's just say that I used them at one point. :)
Upset stomachs notwithstanding, I'd encourage you to be adventurous and try everything. I wouldn't change my culinary choices one bit. It was a blast. The "local" flavor is much more pronounced in the first half of the trip, I found. In the second half, there were many more western choices as well.
Be prepared for a very long day on the Chengdu/Xian/Guilin day. It's absolutely worth it, but man oh man, we were beat for a day or so after that.
Be sure and go explore the park around the hotel in Guilin. We grabbed bikes on the morning before the cruise on the river, and we rode all over the park. It's amazing.
In Shanghai, be sure and go explore Fu Xian(sp?) park when they give you some time after the fan dance. It's quite an experience, assuming the same things are going on when you're there.
If you have cute little kids, especially blond ones, Chinese folks are going to come up and take your picture. Most of the time they'll ask first. Sometimes they won't. They'll stare sometimes as well in some cases -- I think many of them haven't seen Westerners before. It never felt hostile -- it was mainly wonder and interest.
In Chengdu, be sure and take a walk along the river at night. It's beautiful. In Shanghai, walk back to the hotel from dinner the first night. The Bund (river walk) is wonderful.
The World Expo is amazing and utterly overwhelming. There are tons and tons of crowds, and the long lines at many of the pavilions are simply not worth it, given the limited time you have. We hit a bunch of the lesser/smaller pavilions (I went for the "Axis of Evil" trifecta - North Korea, Iran, and Iraq. :-)) and had a blast. Oh, and I think taking the bus across the river is much faster than taking the boat. We did it both ways, and I wish we'd done the bus.
Lastly, if you're worried about it being too foreign or uncomfortable...don't worry. Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong are international cities, and we all felt fine. The tour itself gives you a nice exposure to the culture and country while still keeping things well in control. (If you want to go off and experience the culture yourself during free time, by all means do so! I did so, and I think it enriched the experience.)
Have fun out there. I wish I could start over and do it all again.
Steve

The fee charged by the Chengdu Panda Research Center is per person, not per family. There is no age limit for the experience.
On our trip, I know that a six year old and an eight year old weren't allowed to handle the pandas. A nine, ten, and thirteen year old were allowed to do so.
I don't know if it was an age limit thing or a size thing; I would suspect the former.

Yes. Our boys were able to swim at least once at each hotel. Several of the adventurers were working out almost daily.

Another note - the Great Firewall in China proper (not Hong Kong) blocks access to Facebook along with other sites. If that bugs you as it did me, I found two ways around it: phone and VPN.
I was able to use my phone to go to http://m.facebook.com and post status updates and such. This didn't work when using wifi from the phone. The downside here is that international data access isn't cheap. Checking and updating status and such several times a day consumed less the 20MB of data for me, so a 20MB data plan would be sufficient.
I also installed VPN ("Virtual Private Network") software on my PC once I got here. That let me get full access to FB. I used software from http://www.surfbouncer.com for $4.99/week. Worked great most of the time.

YES ours also smelled horrible. I opened them up and put them outside on covered patio for 2 weeks, sun and fresh air made the smell go away. If you are short on time, try Lysol or Fabreeze. BTW this is our second ABD trip and first set of backpacks were much better then these...and didnt smell!!!!. first set had suede bottom and stronger straps. THAT said, we DID take the first set with us to Prague trip and WILL take this set with us in few weeks to China. They are great for umbrellas, ponchos, water bottles, stuff, etc. on daily excursions. There is alot of on-and-off the busses, so they do take a beating. dont want my favorite purses taking that kind of beating. I DO take a small over the shoulder purse for camera, money, phone, motrin(!) for short jaunts off the bus and dinners.

Hi everyone - just stumbled upon this thread from the home page. My husband has been in China on business since June 5th. He has been staying in Shanghai but went to Chengdu for a meeting and will be going to Shanghai, Beijing and Datong for his next visit.
I know everyone here will be up for quite an adventure and I wish everyone a fantastic trip. DH has had a very nice stay and is excited for the next few months flying to/from China for work. The people in China have been very warm and welcoming to him.
EDITED TO ADD - Bring Benadryl- they don't sell it in the stores - DH had a colleague who had an allergic reaction to something she ate and he tried 3+ different stores and they don't sell it.

That is probably how it goes for China. When I was living in Germany, my residency visa had my horrible, biometric mugshot embedded in the printed sticker, also adhered over a passport page. China may choose to file the photo, electronically, but not include. If you have any questions, or just want to formally ease concerns, call the Chinese Embassy:

Your passport/visa is absolutely correct!!! I am not sure why they asked for a photo (maybe big brother is watching), but you are good to go!:thumbsup2

Hi - what do you mean by "photo CD?" Is it like Photo Pass in the parks? Or was this your own personal photo CD?
Yes, it includes the slideshow from the last night and all the photos that your guides took during your adventure! Very cool!:yay:

Well it is our turn to pack and slightly panic LOL!! We leave home on Wednesday so we can get to a major airport then we fly out of Canada on Friday YEAH. Wondering how the tour who is there now did during the heat wave hope everything was okay for them.

You mean it got hotter? The second half of June was like Florida in July in many spots.

We just got back from China last evening. It was a fantastic experience. I can't possibly say enough good things about ABD.
I would tell future adventurers to be sure to prepare for extreme heat and humidity. It was crazy hot. Also remember to bring some TP!
Have a great time. Our guides, James and Huan, were FANTASTIC!!

I really admire you for your determination & enthusiasm to return, even after the horrid experience you had last year. Obviously, it's paid off for you. I hope I would react the same way if anything like that happened to me.
Are you going to do a Trip Report? I sure hope so!

Hi Sayhello! Thanks for your kindness. It was so important to our family not to let our bad experience cloud our view of China. I have to admit it was kind of scary to take the chance again. It was better immediately because no one came onto the plane when we landed in Beijing wearing hazmat suits! We had the adventure we dreamed about.
I hadn't thought of doing a trip report. I don't think I could do nearly as well as you do!

Hello all, especially "2GirlsMama!" (It's your fellow adventurer, Stacey!)
We were also on the most recent trip (today is my first day back to work) and it was amazing. Cannot say enough about how wonderful it was. The country is beautiful, our fellow adventurers were perfect, and the guides were the best we could have hoped for.
I will try to muster up energy (and time) for my own trip report, but to summarize: I am blessed to have had the opportunity and grateful Disney helped make it perfect!

I'm another adventurer (Jen) just back from China and will add my kudos to Disney, and especially our guides James and Huan, for an amazing trip! It far surpassed my high expectations, and my family would travel with ABD again in a heartbeat. It may sound corny, but it's hard to describe just how wonderful this trip really was! China is a beautiful country, and it was so interesting to see both the well known sites as well as slices of "real life" in China.
Now I just need to beat this jetlag!!

We are just back from our China tour started July 18, got home Aug 1. It was an absolutely amazing trip, this was our first ABD trip but more than half of the families on our tour were repeat customers and I can see why, Disney does an amazing job and I don't know where Disney finds all the amazing guides (I have never heard a bad word about any guide) but ours were phenominal (Jason and Leo).
We ended up staying an extra day in Hong Kong and felt out of sorts not having a guide to help us with all the little details, like transportation, etc. We had done the Npgong 360 tour to see the giant budha and then went to a mall, where my son ended up getting injured, Croc shoe vs. escalator, escalator won. Thank goodness it is not too serious and he will be fine in a week or so and thank goodness this happened when the tour was over. We did really miss our guides then, but Disneyland hotel did go above and beyond to help us in anyway they could including lending us a wheelchair, free of charge.
I would definately travel with Disney again and look forward to planning my next trip probably 2012.

Welcome back, It's always cold! ABD's are definitely addictive. And it IS so hard finishing up on your own... nobody to take care of stuff for you. The Guides spoil us so much...
