Water taste question ? ? ?

:idea:

Most of the camping we do is around salt water---We love the ocean, bays, inland waterways, etc.

The campground water normally has a taste, that for the sake of a name, tastes sulphuric.

We have only used our onboard fresh water tank once. We just hook-up to the water supply at the CG and have been buying bottled water. This can be a tad expensive, especially when we will be on the road in the near future for the better part of 2 months.

Our camp sites have been up & down the east coast and will be up & down the east coast the next time we go away.

Do you find the same water conditions (taste) ?
What do you use as a solution. Or am I missing something ? Like not seeing the forest for the trees ! ! !

Yes we have trouble with the taste of the water in most campgrounds. We have a white hose that helps but we use a Brita Pitcher and filter all our drinking water through that.

We use a Brita pitcher in the house and move it to the trailer when camping. On the way to the Fort last time we discovered it shattered all over the floor with a good size puddle on the linoleum. Seems we forgot to stow it correctly!

Anyhoo, I tried one of the in-line filters for the supply hose, but found it to be expensive and sat for a long time between trips. I did not feel comfortable re-using it, figured that bacteria had a good time building up inside while it was in storage.

Anyone remember the ratio of bleach to water for sanitizing the fresh water system? It was in the Jayco manual, but I don't see it in the paperwork for the new trailer. I think it was something like a cup of bleach for every 20 gallons?

The advice on rv.net runs from 1/4 cup to 1 cup per 15 gallons. I think I used 1/2 cup per 15 last year when I cleaned the FW tank. That was enough that I could smell the bleach in the TT when the water was running. I figured if the bleach smell was strong enough then it should be enough to sanitize.

I am going to look into the Brita filter/pitcher and also see if the RV dealers have other suggestions.

I used 3/4 cup of bleach to 15 gallons in our fresh water tank, then flushed it real good, the one time we used it to carry onboard water for drinking. I also use the white hoses. I filled up at home and the taste was OK.

I also run 1/4 to 1/2 cup of bleach as a maintenance procedure (keeping the lines sanitized) now and then, even though we will not be using the fresh water tank for drinking. Typically I run with only about 1/8 to 1/4 tank of water (not for drinking), to keep weight down.

Any other ideas or correct me if I am doing something wrong.

Be sure if you are sanitizing your RV water lines you run all the faucets until you can smell bleach, then leave it for 12 hours before flushing it out.

We have well water at home and when we travel we notice the chlorine in the
tap water. We do have an inline filter but what I have found helps is to fill the coffee pot or a pitcher of water the night before. The chlorine seems to lessen after it sits a few hrs.

We use tanked and CG water for showers and limited cooking. We bring water from home for coffee, tea, kool-aids and other cooking.

It isn't fun having stomach issues.

I feel the same about using the water tank in the camper. Strictly used for washing hands. Drinking water I buy in either gallon jugs or the bigger dispenser type containers with a handle for coffee, tea etc. Currently the camper has only a 5 gallon jug and water pump but by spring should have a city water connection. Even then, will be using only for washing, I've tried a lot of things but even with white 'drinking water' hoses and inline filters I've found the water tastes like it came from a hose.

I am going through food withdrawal as I write.

Gearing up for Tarpon a fight in the Keys pretty soon. Had to get in some kind of shape paddling a kayak in a circle and tangling with a tarpon or maybe some 1 lb snappers.

Believe it or not ; dropped 14bs in 13 days---About 10 more to get and I should be in playing (fishing) shape. Hooray for lettuce and celery, but a major ugh in the taste category.

Also, I found in my ocean kayak stuff, 2 attachable/removable keels or skegs.
Not sure what you call them----but if I start going straight, you have to assume they work---I haven't changed my ugly paddling style.

To sanitize my system I use a 60/40 concentration of sanitizer to water. Now having said that, I don't use bleach in my system. I
prefer 100 proof whiskey instead.:banana:

I have never had a complaint about the taste of my water and I don't
have to worry about the plumbing freezing.pirate:

Personally, I think I am the best at taking pics, of the one that got away.

I am reading a book "Fishermans' secrets"----How to take a 10 incher and make it look like a 5 footer.
