Welcome to my dining report! We are leaving on our first family vacation to WDW in two days, and I thought I would start this report early and whet your appetites (so to speak). :goodvibes First, let’s start with the cast of this little show:

Me: I’m a 38 year-old graduate student and mother of two. I love all kinds of food, and exercise regularly so that I don’t start resembling the Michelin Man. ;) The last time I was at WDW, I was 13, and Epcot was brand new, so I’m really looking forward to a ton of new and fun experiences.

My DH: My high school sweetheart - he’s a carnivore through and through, and tries to avoid most things that belong in the fruit and vegetable part of the food pyramid. He’s never been to WDW before, and looked perplexed when I asked him 6 months ago what he wanted to eat in February. :rotfl2:

My DS5: He will be turning 6 just before we leave on this trip, so we are celebrating his birthday all week. party::bday: He loves chicken nuggets, French Fries, pizza, and has never met a fruit he didn’t like. We are currently engaged in a war over broccoli.

My DS2: He is only 6 weeks out from his third birthday, so we’re taking him while he is still “free”. He loves most foods (especially hot dogs, fruit, cheese, and yogurt), but doesn’t like French Fries or chicken nuggets. :confused3 His favorite cartoon is the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and he can hardly wait to eat with the characters.

I made my ADR’s with all of the other crazy people on the infamous October 27th. Yes, I am one of the people who crashed the online reservation system at 5 AM. The worst part is that my 90 day window would have been Nov. 1st – so if only Disney had waited a few more days… All’s well that ends well, though. I got all the reservations I wanted later that afternoon after a brief 5 minutes on hold. :yay: So where are we eating?

Hello fellow DISers! We’re back, and had an absolutely amazing time! This was our first family vacation to Walt Disney World, so you will be getting a complete Newbie perspective on the food in the parks. We were on the regular dining plan, and felt it was a good value for us, especially as it was our first big trip to WDW together. First, I will apologize for the fact that I didn’t take as many pictures as I probably should have.
However, I did take a lot of notes, so here goes…first stop: Cosmic Ray’s.

We arrived on Saturday, January 30th, in the early afternoon. After checking in, we headed straight to the Magic Kingdom. We hadn’t eaten any lunch, and it was already almost 4 in the afternoon, so we headed over to Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café for a late lunch/early dinner. My DH and I each had the chicken and rib combination, which came with mashed potatoes and green beans. We each got a coke to drink, as we were in SERIOUS need of caffeine at that point :coffee: (we’d been up since 5:30 AM). I shared my dinner with my DS2, who was not on the dining plan. My DS6 had the kids’ chicken and French fries meal with a side of grapes and milk. The chicken and ribs were both very good. The chicken was regular rotisserie-style chicken, and was flavorful and juicy. The ribs were tender, and we both added extra BBQ sauce to the ribs, since they only came with a thin layer of sauce. I thought the mashed potatoes were OK, but then I’m very picky about my mashed potatoes (I would rather eat a pound of Brussel sprouts before I ate an instant potato). My DH thought they were great. The real surprise was the green beans. They were firm and buttery with just the right amount of salt – delicious. DS6 said the chicken, French fries, and grapes were good, and they must have been because he inhaled them.

For dessert DH chose the chocolate cake, and I chose the carrot cake. DH and DS6 shared the chocolate cake, and said that the cake was moist and that the frosting was thick with good chocolate flavor. DS6 loved the Mickey shaed sprinkles! I shared the carrot cake with DS2. It was well spiced, but slightly dry. The frosting was very sweet with a hint of cream cheese. The best part was when DS2 solemnly tried to tell me that eating the carrot made out of frosting counted as a vegetable. :rotfl2: (Although, now that I think about it, that might actually be true when you are on vacation.) The boys both enjoyed Sonny Eclipse, who played almost continually while we were there. Overall, I would recommend Cosmic Ray’s. The food was fresh, hot and tasty, even at 3:45 in the afternoon, and the portions were generous. It was a very good deal for 3 QS credits.

Total cost: $57

On Sunday we were in the Magic Kingdom again, so we stopped into Columbia Harbour House for lunch. After reading all of the recommendations here on the boards, I ordered the Anchor’s Aweigh sandwich, which comes with potato chips, and a bottle of water. The sandwich is white tuna with lettuce and tomato on multigrain bread. The bread was supposed to be toasted, but it was only lightly so, which left it a bit dry instead of crunchy. The sandwich filling itself was fresh, with a good balance of tuna and mayonnaise. My DH ordered the Chicken Breast Nuggets and Fish with French fries and a Coke. He said it was good, but nothing special - about the same as you would get from any fast food restaurant. DS6 ordered his favorite – chicken nuggets and French fries with grapes and chocolate milk. He ate it all, and then “helped” me eat all my chips :rotfl2: (apparently walking around the parks for hours stirs up a hearty appetite). DS2 ordered the macaroni and cheese with applesauce, grapes, and apple juice. Although he ate the sides quickly enough, he took one bite of the macaroni and cheese and declared it “yucky”. I tried it, and he was right. ::yes::

For dessert DH once again ordered the chocolate cake, which DS2 and DS6 helped him eat. I ordered the apple crisp, which turned out to be more like a small, single-serving apple pie. It was warm and had a flaky crust. The filling was packed full of apples with the right balance of sugar and cinnamon. It was very chilly outside that day, and the warm apple pie was just what I needed :cloud9: (even if DS2 tried to eat half of it). We ate upstairs, and the boys loved all of the nautical decorations. Here is a photo of the view from upstairs down into the lower art of the restaurant:

As you can see, CHH was quite busy. I'm glad I had the Disboards to tell me to eat upstairs, because it was much quieter up there.

Mmmm we liked CHH, too! We sat upstairs at apparently one of the "magical moments" tables and had all of the napkins and condiments right at our table. A CM even came over and offered to clear our trays! We liked it more for the atmosphere though, than for the food.

The atmosphere was great, and we thought it was a nice alternative to the regular burgers and hotdogs you get at a lot of the other QS places in the Magic Kingdom. :thumbsup2

On Sunday evening we made our way through the drizzling rain to Norway, to eat dinner at the Akershus Royal Banquet Hall.
http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af313/MusicMouse7/WDW%20Food%20Pics/WaltDisneyWorld165.jpg

This was our first character meal, and I was really excited to see the princesses (yes, this one was really just for me). Fortunately, my boys are too young to complain that princesses are too girly for them ;). And, as it turns out, they aren’t too manly for princesses. They were enchanted as soon as they saw Belle.
http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af313/MusicMouse7/WDW%20Food%20Pics/WaltDisneyWorld176.jpg

We were seated in the turret room of the Castle. What a great location! It was just off the main dining room, and it was quieter and more intimate (only four tables in there). While we were waiting, we looked over the menu:
http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af313/MusicMouse7/WDW%20Food%20Pics/WaltDisneyWorld178.jpg

Our server, Kristine, welcomed us, explained about the cold bar, and took our drink orders – Coke (DH), Iced Tea with lemon (me), water (DS6), and Apple Juice (DS2). She also nicely explained that even though DS2 was not on the dining plan, he could go ahead and order an entrée at no charge since this was considered a family-style dinner. She told us that the princesses would not be around for a little bit and to go ahead and get something to eat. I went up first to get some food for the boys, and took some careful mental notes as to what was on the cold bar. It is set up in five stations. The outside two are identical, offering a mixed green salad, three different kinds of rolls, small balls of butter, and four dressings – ranch, blue cheese, a zinfandel vinaigrette, and an herbal vinaigrette. The second stations on either side are also identical, containing pasta salad, potato salad, beet salad, cucumber salad, grilled asparagus, mixed fruit (cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, pineapple, and grapes), cubed Swiss cheese, cube Muenster cheese, thinly sliced salami, turkey, roast beef, and a horseradish cream sauce. The center station contained all of the fish and seafood items, including pickled herring, a whole side of smoked salmon with the trimmings (lemons, dill, capers, etc.), smoked whitefish, shrimp salad, peel-and-eat boiled shrimp, and thinly sliced lox. Is your mouth watering yet? I piled the boys’ plates with salad, cheese, rolls, butter, fruit, and cold cuts, and sent DH up to get his own plate (have you ever noticed that Mom always eats last? :confused3). Finally, I got to pile up my own plate with green salad, pasta salad, potato salad, beet salad, asparagus, shrimp salad, and a few peel and eat shrimp. I also took some extra cheese and salami (for DS6) and extra salad (for DS2). I have to say that I could have made a meal out of the cold bar (it would have made a fabulous light lunch)! Everything was fresh and tasty, and we all cleaned our plates!

It’s probably just as well that our entrees came at that point, otherwise I would have filled up on salads. I had ordered the Mustard-glazed Seared Salmon, which came with roasted carrots, fingerling potatoes and a mustard-shallot drizzle.
http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af313/MusicMouse7/WDW%20Food%20Pics/WaltDisneyWorld179.jpg

Oh my, this was one of the best things that I ate all week! The mustard glaze was sweet with just the right amount of spicy heat from the mustard. There were three different colors of carrots that had been roasted and sliced into rounds. The fingerling potatoes were yellow potatoes with the skins still on – buttery and soft. The drizzle contained not only mustard and shallot, but also honey and some type of citrus for a touch of acidity. DH ordered the Traditional Kjottkake - Ground Beef and Pork Dumplings served with mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus, and lingonberry gravy. He said that the meatballs were good – moist and well seasoned, and that the mashed potatoes were also tasty. He couldn’t make up his mind about the lingonberry gravy, though. He didn’t think it was bad, just a different flavor than what he was used to. His asparagus mysteriously appeared on my plate :lmao: (did I mention his dislike of most vegatables?). I thought it was delicious. DS6 ordered the kids’ cheese pizza. It was a bit small and had no side dishes, so I was glad that he had eaten quite a bit of food from the cold bar earlier. DS2 ordered a hotdog, which came with corn and a small dish of ketchup.

We were just getting into our entrees when some of the princesses started to make their way around to our part of the restaurant. On this night, we got Aurora, Ariel, Cinderella, and Snow White. :thumbsup2 Although the princesses all came around at the same time, they were well spaced so that we had plenty of time to talk to them and take pictures.
http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af313/MusicMouse7/WDW%20Food%20Pics/WaltDisneyWorld181.jpg

http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af313/MusicMouse7/WDW%20Food%20Pics/WaltDisneyWorld183.jpg

http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af313/MusicMouse7/WDW%20Food%20Pics/WaltDisneyWorld191.jpg

After the princesses left and our plates were all cleared, we got the family plate of assorted desserts – Chocolate Mousse Cake, Rice Cream with Strawberry Sauce, and Apple Tart with Caramel Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream. My absolute favorite was the rice cream. If you like rice pudding, this is the dessert for you! It was so creamy and smooth and rich – I wish I had a bowl of it right now! :cloud9: DH and the boys tried it, but didn’t like it (what a shame!), but they LOVED the chocolate mousse cake. It had a deep, rich chocolaty flavor, and I only got one bite, because DS6 stole the rest of it while I was eating the rice cream. They also liked the ice cream and caramel sauce of the apple tart, but not the tart itself. I agreed. The apples were well flavored with sugar and cinnamon, but the crust was too thick and heavy. At that point, we were all so stuffed it didn’t matter anyway.
Overall, I would say that Akershus was one of the best meals we had all week (top three for sure)! The food was fantastic, and getting to see the princesses without standing in line for an hour was more than worth the price of admission! I would definitely eat here again! :cool1:

Thank you! It was so funny when DS6 would have conversations with them, like this one with Princess Aurora: "I know karate (he's been taking lessons). Does your Prince know karate?" "Oh, no. My Prince uses a sword and shield. I'm sure he would like to see your karate moves sometime, though, if you are ever in our kingdom. Then perhaps he could show you how to defend yourself against a dragon." :rotfl2: :lmao:

On Monday (2/1) we went to Hollywood Studios. DHS didn’t exist the last time I went to Disney World, so this was a completely new park for me. Although the day simply started out cloudy, by 10:00 it was raining, and by 11:30 we were ready for lunch (and a little warmth :cold:). Since we had just seen the Muppets and were in that general area, we decided to go to Toy Story Pizza Planet.

http://i1019.photobucket.com/albums/af313/MusicMouse7/WDW%20Food%20Pics/ToyStoryPizzaPlanet.jpg

Now I know this place always gets mixed reviews, but it was a welcome haven for four damp and hungry people :umbrella:. We ordered our food and headed upstairs, hoping to find a quieter table (the video game arcade makes the downstairs area quite noisy).

I ordered the vegetable pizza, with mushrooms, peppers, onions, and tomatoes, with a side salad, and a bottle of water. The pizza was a single-serving sized pizza, with plenty of sauce and cheese. The vegetables were not overcooked, and had a spicy, peppery flavor that added a welcome bit of heat. The salad was your basic Disney side salad with lettuce, shredded carrots, and two slices of cucumber. Since I was getting vegetables on my pizza, I didn’t protest too loudly when DS2 ate most of it (did I mention that he loves salad? :rotfl2:). DH ordered the pepperoni pizza with a side salad and a Coke. The boys each got a kids’ cheese pizza, grapes, and a chocolate chip cookie. DH and I both agreed that it wasn’t the best pizza we’ve ever eaten and it wasn’t the worst. It was decent pizza, but we decided that we would probably try something else the next time we were in DHS. The best part of the meal was the dessert – Mickey Head Rice Krispy Treats! Yes, I know that I can make these at home any time, but for some reason they taste extra good in the shape of a Mickey head :lmao:. Overall, I would rate Toy Story Pizza Planet as being pretty average. While the food was certainly edible, none of it was outstanding.

Total Cost: $38 (3 QS Credits)
Plus: $4.99 for one kids’ cheese pizza meal for DS2 (OOP)
