iBook....hmmmm....I don't think I want to read using a handheld HD screen. Too much eyestrain for me. I think I'll look more into the e-ink screens. The prices seemed a little high for the ebooks also. I'm wondering about the epub format for the books though, will that affect if publishers will support Amazon's format?

alamode
01-27-2010, 01:30 PM
Ia it just me, or does this seem the dumbest idea for a product ever? A tablet with a keyboard dock? Get a freaking laptop.
Plus if you have a data plan with AT & T already for your phone, you need to spend another $30 a month for "unlimited" (which is probably very limited). I'd hate to see what the data plan costs are going to be here in Canada.
Personally I think they are way off the mark with this. Looks like an oversized iTouch. I'm sure some people may have a use for it, but I can't see it becoming the next great thing.

Wow, what a complete let down. :( Was really hoping for a REAL tablet computer, running OS X, not a giant iPhone, LOL.
I must admit though, at the $499 price point, and the way they are touting ebooks, it might put a huge dent in the Kindle device market. Unless they really drop the price on the units. Other than that, again, for me at least, this thing is pretty much useless as I already own an iPhone and a Macbook.

Giving that they worked a deal with AT&T for the 3G service/wi-fi hotspots, it seems a bit less likely that a Verizon iPhone is coming. Why not go with a new provider, unless Verizon said "no" to an unlocked, no contract data-only deal.
Verizon doesn't have much in the way of wi-fi hotspots as far as I know either, so that could have been a factor.

I wasnt able to watch the live stream...but from what I'm seeing....I'm not sold on this yet.
I also dont see a backlit reading device killing the e-ink readers. Sony tried this on one of their readers and it wasnt successful.

Well, it seems as though a lot of people are disappointed with this - Apple stock is down after the announcement. People like me (gadget freaks / historical first adopters) will race to get this (and I will), but I think they may have an issue getting this into the hands of standard users (the vast majority of the market).
But this is Apple we're talking about - and I wouldn't count them out on spec. As with any device like this, it will all come down to applications. As new apps are developed for it, as new software is developed for it, you may find more and more people getting on board. It will be interesting to watch.
Irrespective, I'm buying one as soon as they'll take my money :)

In doing just a bit of research.....and it really is just a little bit.....I still dont see this hurting the Kindle.
It's about double the price.
You will need to pay a monthly fee.
It's much larger and therefore less portable.
It's backlit...meaning eyestrain...especially in older eyes.
From the little information available...it looks like books will be more expensive that Amazon. (Best sellers at $15 instead of $9.99)
Apple has said that they have "achieved a 10 hour battery life". If I turn the Whispernet off on my Kindle....I get two weeks out of a single charge. With the Whispernet on....about a week of fairly regular use.
While this isnt being touted as an e-reader....it is one of the functions and while it does other cool stuff.....I see a place for both.
Not ready to give up my Kindle.
Now...if they make an Oberon cover for the iPad (it is truly an awful name)....that could change my mind. :)

I'm also having trouble picturing how you will type on this.
When I type on my iPhone.....I use two thumbs.
This seems kinda big and with the supposed "almost full size" virtual keyboard, I see either laying the iPad on a flat surface (which will mean that you have to be looking straight down) or constantly looking for some sort of wedge to keep to prop it up and something else to keep it from skittering across the table.
Can you tell that I'm trying to figure out what I want and need from this device? I'm still not sold.
I can see that it would be GREAT for newspapers and photo heavy magazines.,,, but..it's a pricey magazine reader.

This looks great, but I for one will not be giving up my Kindle. I read a lot(about a book a week) and the E-ink on the Kindle is alot easier on my eyes than reading on a LCD screen.

I am in for this one.
Held off on getting an ereader (jonesed for a kindle for years, but it only came to Canada in the fall,) been using Ereader app on the touch. I just use it with dark background and light print, much easier on the eyes. With wifi off I get about 10 hrs straight reading on the touch, so ipad could be as much as 20-24 hours with wifi off. I will continue to buy ebooks via Ereader's store, as the app will still work, and they have an good rebate program. To fight the glossy screen glare, I have a matte screen protector on my touch and I already have one that will fit the ipad, just need to make an opening for the home button.
With the camera/SD card adapter kit and the photo app/mobile me gallery apps, I can now get my photos into my mobile tool, it was one of my pet peeve with the touch. And this will provide enough back up for a two week trip.
Easier web browsing, better for newspapers and magazines, and uses the older apps. This is what I wanted. The new iworks group of apps is nice as well, not great but nice. Hopefully Java and/or Flash will be a software fix someday.
My only decision will be wifi only or the 3g, I do fairly well with the touch now, so wifi most likely.
Working in a university and remembering the number of keyboards we sold for palms back in the day, I see many a student using this with the a notes/word processing app and BT keyboard to do in class note-taking. Will be interesting to see how the textbook companies will deploy their apps and books, there are couple out there now, but very few.
Big question what exactly will "assisted GPS" bring to the wifi model?

Kindles are great for reading novels. But, you need color and random access to be useful with magazines and newspapers.
So, I had very high hopes. It still seems like a 0.9 product to me.

The real nice thing here is if you buy the version with 3G, you don't have to have the data plan all the time. For example, if you were traveling one month you could turn it on and then back off again when you return (or when the month is out). It will be a prepaid, no contract data plan. I am thinking I may take the plunge, but want to put my hands on one first. I did see where they will have accessories so you can hook up a USB device or flash card. This would allow you to download photos while traveling.
But the real reason is when I am working in the hospital I usually bring my laptop to work on when I have a few minutes. It is large enough to be a pain and takes a lot of space from the desk I share with others. This may be the solution, but like I said, I need to look at it in person before deciding.

The no flash thing is an epic FAIL.
Kindle killer? Not likely. The Kindle's too inexpensive, even compared to the lowest pad price point, for there to be real competition.
It took me forever to get a Kindle - and I really, really wanted it. I only asked for it for Christmas because it had finally moved to $259. At that price no one who's interested primarily in an e-reader would spend hundreds more. Or pay monthly for internet access.
So disappointed the rumors of media partnerships for live tv content haven't panned out yet. Cuz THAT would have been a netbook killer for me.
I love my iPhone. It's a good portable mini-computer for me right now. I'll use my iPad money to upgrade it and get a netbook for travel.
I'll wait to see what the 3rd or 4th gen of this brings.

I Want to Want one.
Sadly this just misses the mark on so many levels is what I would want in a tablet computer.
1. I would want to come with a slot in the back that makes the device easy and safe to take on and off a special hook for the wall. Would love to be able to take it into the kitchen and just hang it safely up.
2. Must have Flash and silverlight. Without the ability to watch Hulu and Netflix It really can't call itself a media device. Apple must be resisting it because why would you buy something from itunes if you can stream it for free.

I Want to Want one.
This is my feeling as well.
I just dont see where this device will do any of the things I want it to do better than the things I already have.
I keep looking for a reason to need (or even want) one.

Why could Apple not deliver what anyone who would even consider a tablet want. A REAL computer, running OS X, in tablet form. Something that could actually run all the iLife apps, Photoshop, Office etc. etc.
I know I posted earlier in this thread, but the disappointment in this device is just irritating. To have Jobs, before the event, making statements such as this is the most important thing I've ever done\released, really hyped up a lot of people. I guess you need to take the good with the bad, but I just see this thing being another Apple TV. A device I own, and love by the way, but more of a "toy" or small niche product.
Again, I would have to ask why anyone who already owns a laptop, iPhone, most likely both, would even want to part with their cash for this. I agree with a few other posts...I WANT to want one, but just don't think it's going to happen. To repeat my first paragraph. WHY could this not not have been a true portable\tablet devices running OS X!!!!???? :confused3

I hope they announce an iPhone for Verizon Wireless. I would buy that if that would happen.
I've seen this same discussion on facebook quite a bit, but iPhone on verizon isn't something likely to happen, at least in the near term. iPhone hardware is made for GSM (which includes AT&T and other carriers, and frankly, most of the world's cell networks). An iPhone for verizon would mean a CDMA version of the hardware (only used by Verizon, sprint, metropcs, and possibly a few smaller carriers, and it's a dying breed). Apple doesn't like to produce divergent hardware like that. Though there is potentially good market share on verizon, it's only in the US. This is to say nothing of the very real issue of a boatload of users all of a sudden joining verizon using data-intensive phones, can the network handle that?
Now, a 4G iphone that uses LTE (which is theoretically backward compatible to both CDMA and 3G) might be a possibility at some point, but I don't know that the infrastructure is anywhere close to ready yet.
timmac
01-28-2010, 03:04 PM
Giving that they worked a deal with AT&T for the 3G service/wi-fi hotspots, it seems a bit less likely that a Verizon iPhone is coming. Why not go with a new provider, unless Verizon said "no" to an unlocked, no contract data-only deal.
Verizon doesn't have much in the way of wi-fi hotspots as far as I know either, so that could have been a factor.
My theory is that, knowing the exclusivity agreement ends in June, AT&T was cornered into offering a really good price (debatable if this is really good or not, but compared to a 3G usb adapter, it's cheap) or risk losing the business entirely.
Given the same reasons I explained about the iPhone for Verizon not being likely, I would have been surprised if apple even tried to strike a deal with verizon on this one. Wouldn't make sense to have the hardware only compatible with a dying breed of cell phone infrastructure that is only prevalent in the US.

But, if you want the 3G you will have to wait. Anyone heard if it allows flash player?
Apparently, no. During Jobs' demo, a site he visited had flash on the page that rendered with the typical "no plugin" icon.
This whole deal with lack of flash support is an overblown arms race between apple and adobe anyway. Apple wants to control what software you can run on the device (for better or worse) and refuses to concede that flash (for better or worse) is the defacto standard for rich interactive content on the web.
All of that said, on the iPhone, I think this was acceptable, since web browsing isn't really the primary function of the device. On a device that has already been touted (rather arrogantly, I might add) as the best web experience ever, it's a real problem.
timmac
01-28-2010, 03:13 PM
While I think the device is nice/interesting/neat in its own right, there's no way I'm buying one. I have a laptop that functions just fine, and an iPhone that works just fine. There's no need for something in the middle.
In full disclosure, I'll say I've never been an apple fanboy by any means, though they have won me over with the iPhone. That in mind, I watched the endogadget blog excitedly hoping for the "big reveal" (I think the price point was supposed to be the highlight), which in my mind never really came.
The iPad seems less portable than an iPhone, and onlly barely more convenient than a conventional laptop, with added limitations.
I totally respect everyone who is interested and will get one right away, but for myself, and I think for a lot of people, it's hard to justify the need, or even much of the want for it.

Love the discussion and I find it fascinating how talk of this has invaded everywhere - if nothing else it has created more press than the State of the Union address.
A couple of thoughts:
Regarding Flash and Multitouch, these capabilities could easily be turned on when the new version of the OS is released, or left off. It's a shame and really needed.
Ebook reader -
imagine this, the ability to read a cookbook, in color with drop down video segments showing the recipe being made. May not be exciting to some, but Food Network has shown that there is a huge audience of people interested in cooking and recipe shows.
A true comic book reader, with electronic delivery of comics; again not everyone's cup of tea - but there is a huge market for this. Kid's picture books too.
None of these can be reproduced on E-ink.
Laptop v. iPad - I think this device would really appeal to the large segment of people that use their laptops almost exclusively to surf the web, update facebook, and send e-mail. Let's face it, laptops and their corresponding OSes are incredibly complicated and easy to mess up. I'm the go to IT guy in my family and there are people that I know who would get 100% of their needs met with this.
Outside of the box thinking - it's funny how everyone is only thinking of this machine in the narrowly defined way it was presented. When the iPhone was first introduced, no one thought we would be able to use it as our external brain (Evernote), a bargain finder / barcode scanner (RedLaser) or augmented reality machine (Layar, et al.) Wouldn't it be cool if your Doctor walked into your appointment with one of these, having your complete medical file at hand and able to shoot off prescriptions, etc.

I'm a big Apple fan, and have been for 20 plus years. However, I can't rationalize getting one of these. If I traveled more, maybe. But at home and at work I have WiFi, and my laptop is just fine. I also have an ipod touch, and use the Kindle app (which does not need WIFI all the time), and other apps when I want a hand held device. I don't see a need of a bigger screen, the Touch is big enough for me. I also would not want to pay the 3G price with ATT no less, which is spotty in my area. So while I think it is cool, and I think lots of people will find uses for it and love it, it is not for me at this time.

I guess I'm in the same camp as those who want one, but don't know what to do with it. Its not like I need it. We've got 3 laptops at home (one for me, one for Val and the third is a back-up/mass storage server) so I don't need another device to surf the web at home. We've also both got iPhones, so I'd rather not spend even more money with AT&T to get the 3G version if I did get one just for the wow factor.
Maybe by the time the iPad comes out, AT&T will finally offer tethering on the iPhone so I could get by with the wifi only version. Then I could see bringing the iPad with me on trips (with the iPhone) rather than having to bring a laptop for casual browsing. :surfweb:
Sigh. Decisions. Decisions. :confused3

I like what I see so far. Granted, I'm a prototypical early adopter that tends to run out to the store immediately after a new tech gadet is released--particularly anything by Apple.
I think the success of this device will ultimately depend on the quality of the apps designed for it. The powerful processor in this device will allow developers to design apps for the iPad that simply are not possible on an iPhone or iPod Touch.
From a Disney perspective, the folks at Disney Digital Books have to be literally salivating over this device. I would love to have access to several hundred interactive Disney books for a small monthly fee. It would be like a Leapfrog Tag on steroids. I could actually use this thing to read stories to my daughter before she goes to bed at night. My Kindle--which I love--is literally useless for kids books.

I think you might have lost me here.
I can see the use of an online cookbook with drop down video segments. I really can. But...as I'm usually at home cooking, I dont see the need for a special device as I have a 13 inch Macbook which only needs an additional 3 inches of space.
My MacBook was $999. The 64g iPad is going to be $799 and then a monthly fee of $30. The MacBook does more and is a better value.
I am also not sure I see the need for an ereader for comic books or kids books. Now...I will grant you the fact that I dont read either, so maybe I'm wrong here.
My reasons for buying an ereader have been well documented. I need bigger font, ebooks are easier to store, ebooks are much easier when traveling, ebooks are cheaper.
Is there a comic book audience who will be willing to drop $500 (and up) for the chance to read them in e-form? I'm not sure....maybe there is. Do they make large print comic books?
I guess I would ask the same questions in regards to kids books.
As I've said......I really want to like and want this thing. So far...no one has presented anything to get me to part with my money.
Dont get me wrong......I might find out tomorrow that it does something that I didnt know about and now cant live without. If that happens, you will see Pete and I in tents in front of the Apple store.

At first I wanted this but the more I read....I will pass.
Last month I purchased a cute little pink netbook for myself for Christmas for just $299.00. (Costco) I heard about the possibility of a tablet but that the price would be about $1,000.00. I didn't want to pay that so I got the netbook. My netbook has everything that people want in the ipad ( I agree dumb name), lots of memory, webcam, slot for my sd camera card...and more...
I have a 32G touch and love it but I really want an iphone. I can upgrade to anything but an iphone now but ATT is making me wait the full 2 years to get the best price on the iphone. (April 18th). But when I do then I will have to add a data plan and that is another $30 a month...I love it when there is free wifi available. So I hope to get one in April and if not I will still be ok. ;)
So I will pass and as Kevin said....
My place in line is available!

The difference being that in 2001 I didnt know Apple was making an announcement and yesterday...I was obsessively jumping from website to website to see who was showing the best live stream from SF.
I couldnt wait the hour for the full thing to be posted on the Apple site.
I read something today that makes sense to me. I'd like to credit the original source, but I've read so much that I cant find it.
The person wrote that when the iPhone was released, we were told that this was going to be the ultimate web experience and it was going to fit in your pocket. The web was now truly portable and that we could access it anywhere. Smaller was the best thing ever. The iPhone revolutionized things.
Jump ahead to yesterday and Steve says "this is the best web experience anywhere". Bigger is better. This is going to revolutionize everything.
I dont know if I'm ready for another revolution. Is bigger better than smaller (keep your minds on the subject)? What to do....
I keep reading that the iPad is going to kill the Kindle and the netbook and the nook and laptops.
I'm not sure I believe any of that. I think the iPad is in direct competition with the iPhone and the iPod Touch and that might be Apple's mistake.

First of all, it is NOT a good ebook reader. The Kindle, the nook and the sony readers user e-ink, which vastly reduces eye strain, when compared to the glossy finish of the iPad's display. Secondly, 10 hour battery life verses 2 weeks. It might be good for periodicals and newspapers (although many use flash), so there's a no go for an e-book.
No background processes means you cant play music and read or play a game at the same time. Heck, my Zune can even do that.
The iPad is basically a large iTouch, or a fancy digital picture frame. Add another $30 to $50 for data access on top of your phone and home data plans, and it gets to be a very expensive fancy picture frame.

Very true! - the speed of innovations is increasing at an incredible rate - when you combine that with incredible savvy marketing, creating a customer "want" that feels like a "need".
The reality is that it's perfectly acceptable to sit on the fence and wait 6 months or so (not everyone is an early adopter - another marketing created word that was designed to infer that someone is a step above/ahead of the masses by the way), you won't miss a thing.
The perception is that we need to make a hard and fast decision and have an unwavering point of view immediately, with limited information and no actual hands on experience.
I think Apple has done an amazing job creating this marketing engine and subsequent polarizing effect.

Wow, what a complete let down. :( Was really hoping for a REAL tablet computer, running OS X, not a giant iPhone, LOL.
My older DD was an artist and was hoping for a REAL Mac tablet computer - she was hoping to be able to use full version of Photoshop. So she's not happy.
My younger DD is using a program called Proloquo2Go (http://www.proloquo2go.com/) on an iPod touch to communicate. For her, the iPod is too small and the iPad would be perfect. The iPad will be able to run all the current iPod/iPhone apps (except those that use features that you need phone connection for.
So, there are a lot of people using this one little app who are very happy that the iPad turned out to be a giant iPod touch.
A true comic book reader, with electronic delivery of comics; again not everyone's cup of tea - but there is a huge market for this. Kid's picture books too.

I just bought something at the Apple store today and the whole transaction was done on an iPod touch. My credit card was taken on the iPod; if I had wanted a printed receipt, the clerk would have sent the info wirelessly to a printer. I agreed to an email receipt, so it was sent right from the iPod to my email.
If someone had told me when iPhones first came out that this would be possible, I'm not sure I would have believed them.
And, there are quite a few medical apps that allow doctors to do things like look at xrays, CAT scans.
Is there a comic book audience who will be willing to drop $500 (and up) for the chance to read them in e-form? I'm not sure....maybe there is. Do they make large print comic books?
There are already quite a few comic book apps available. They look nice on the small screen, but would be even better on the large screen. And you would be able to expand the picture to see details.
No background processes means you cant play music and read or play a game at the same time. Heck, my Zune can even do that.
That's not correct.
It would work the same as the current iPod touch and iPhones. You can't use 2 APPs at the same time, but you can play music and do other things at the same time.
I can listen to music and be on the internet.
I can listen to music and read.
I can listen to music while I use any of the apps that came with the ipod (things like the calendar, notes, maps, etc.)
Some of the apps you can download from the iTunes app store have music or sound effects as part of the app. Most of them have settings that allow choosing to listen to the game music/soundtrack or your own music. Some are more sophisticated and I can listen to music, but still use the sound effects.
So, I can definately play a game and listen to my own music.

When I got my iPhone it did the 3 things I really needed it to do right off the bat. Calls, email, SMS. And I was very happy with just this. But I fell in love (life changing, transforming, pry from my dead cold hands, love) with my iPhone because it did all the other amazing things you wrote about.
That said, unlike the iPhone, the iPad doesn't do the basic things I want to be able to do on it. There is no way I'm going to spend that kind of money and not be able to play my flash games. I'm disappointed that the media options are weak. Since I'm on the road a lot I often miss my favorite shows - I was soo excited when I thought I could watch maybe tv on it. I can't fully Skype on it cuz guess what - no camera. No netbook killer here.:confused3
Maybe since I have bad eyes this eyestrain thing bothers me more than most but reading using Kindle is much easier on the actual device than the app. I can't imagine that would get better with a larger screen. My Kindle's battery is so good that I'm about to take without the charger across country and back next week. Can't do that with an iPad. No Kindle killer here. :confused3
So far it's not only completely UN-revolutionary, it doesn't even cover the bases. That's the problem with it right now. These are smart people though, they have time to fix it. Like I said, I'll wait.:surfweb:

A friend at work today asked me what all the hype was about "this iPad thing". i did my best to explain both the positives and negatives. Her responmse was priceless.
"Not much memory, no flash, and can only do one thing at a time? Sounds like my husband".

So, I can definately play a game and listen to my own music
What people are talking about in the media is not being able to play Pandora or Live 365 as a multitask. They are not generaly talking about their paid for mp3s

I'm not really in the market for another gadget right now, but looking at the iPad competition, I think the Archos 9 tablet is what most people really wanted Apple to make.
http://www.archos.com/products/nb/archos_9/index.html?country=ca&lang=en
I've owned Archos products in the past. Great quality, no advertising budget. If Apple evolves the iPad into something like this, they'd have a winner on their hands.

that may be what they meant, but is not what they wrote.
What I wrote is correct and since I deal with a lot of new iPod touch users who have just gotten iPods/iPhones to use as communication devices I know many people would not know that there are other ways to play besides songs downloaded into the device, as the other poster apparently meant.
I do have The Pandora radio app on my iPod touch, so I know how it works and that you can't multitask when using it.
I do wish that Apple would allow use of Flash on the iPods and iPhones. It is very annoying to be able to go to actual web pages (not mobile versions) and not be able to use the Flash content because Apple has chosen not to allow Flash. I think the iPad might be the trigger that makes Apple change ( at least hope) since users will not be too happy to not be able to use content on the web pages they are going to. I can't really do Farmville or other social games on the iPod touch, but would really want to be able to do that if I had the iPad.

not having Flash on the iPad is a dealbreaker for me...
i can live with it on my iPhone, since i use my iphone for email/calendar/phone/camera/simple web/etc......
but on the iPad? a device that's being described (by Jobs) as the greatest web browsing experience ever?
how is that possible without Flash???????????????????
nope...not possible.....so no iPad for me....unless Apple sees the error of its ways...
by the way, i haven't read through this entire thread....has anyone posted the very funny Washington Post article about the iPad's name?

so here it is:
With a name like iPad, can Apple's new device possibly have wings?
By Monica Hesse

After months of speculation over what Apple would call its latest sacred touch-screen device (iSlate? iTablet?), the company revealed Tuesday that it had opted to go with iPad.
Boyfriends everywhere promptly refuse to purchase it unless they could simultaneously buy some really manly products, like shaving cream and batteries.
Business Insider declared the name "terrible," with one columnist writing that he'd heard rumors of the name "but dismissed it immediately," thinking that Apple would have the foresight to predict a landslide of menstruation mockery. (Did they not see "MADtv's" iPad parody in 2007?)
Meanwhile, the blogosphere found the name debate totally absorbing -- "How will it stand up to other tablets if I pour a test tube full of blue water on it?" one Lemondrop blogger wondered -- and a heavy flow of iPad-related Twitter traffic led "iTampon" to become a top trending topic.
"Are there NO women in the Marketing or Biz Dev department of Mac?" wrote one user, speculating that "iPad" would pass muster only with a man. No women were present on Apple's panel at the San Francisco announcement.
Apple, for its part, heralded the iPad as "a magical and revolutionary device" on its Web site, and did not return a phone call for comment.
This is not the first time that a widely anticipated product launch was met with ridicule. Nintendo's Wii was referred to as "Wee" by disparaging gamers who could not get stoked about a console that sounded like a potty-training term. The Wii went on to break retail records, selling 600,000 units in its first eight days.
However, Apple has yet to address what women everywhere anticipate will obviously be the iPad's biggest problem: You can't use one while swimming.

A problem that I see with the iPod Touch would be the small touchscreen. Someone with Ataxia may have touching a desired icon/key on the small touchscreen. This is where the iPad could be of help. The 9.7" of touchscreen real estate, larger icons, and 1000 multitouch sensors could benefit many disabled people.
The iPad utilizes the iPhone Operating System. Both the Dynavox Vmax and the iPad have bluetooth and Wifi. Many text to speech and environmental control apps are already available for the iPhone Operating System. Someone is even developing an iPhone App to control power wheelchairs. These give the iPad the same functionality as the Vmax. The one exception would be the Eyetracking technology that is available for the Vmax. While the iPad touchscreen is 2.7" smaller than the Dynavox devices, I see some possible advantages that the iPad may have over the Dynavox Vmax and similar AAC devices.
The iPad is much thinner and also 1/3 the weight of the Vmax. The iPad could be mounted on a wheelchair using the same type of mounting hardware as the Vmax. I've attached a photo to show you the Vmax mount that I have seen. Because the iPad is so light that it may not need such a "heavy-duty" mount. Plus, the iPad is light enough to be placed on a basic wheelchair tray. Also, the form factor may be easier for some disabled people to grip and hold.
The biggest advantages I see for the iPad over the Vmax are availability and price point. The things that annoyed me when I went out on my own to design my wheelchair were: the "red tape" involved and also the inflated price of medical equipment. The iPad will be readily available. Also, the $499 price point would be more affordable to parents and schools/organizations than the $8000 Dynavox Vmax.

My DD has been using devices like the Dynavox for many years. Our insurance would not pay, so we paid out of pocket for her equipment.
That's where something like a iPod or iPad gets really beneficial for some people because of the cost. Her iPod touch plus the talking software cost less than just the cost of the mount for her first Dynavox!
And, you are correct that a much lighter weight, less expensive mount could be used for the iPad (a mount for a switch would probably be able to be used with an iPad).
She did have a Dynavox 2C for many years (one of the predecesors of the Dynavox Vmax (http://www.dynavoxtech.com/products/v/)). It was supposed to be super tough, but we had to send it in at least once a year - just the sending it in part cost over $200 (insurance to send something valued at over $8000 costs a fortune), then we had to pay for repairs. And, Dynavox was changing models about every 2 years, so once the machine was a few years old, it could not be repaired any more because the company was no longer supporting it.
When it broke and could not be repaired, I thought I would be smart and get a regular ruggedized consumer computer and Dynavox software to run on it. The cost was only about 1/2 the price of the Dynavox (which was good for us, since our insurance would not have paid for a new Dynavox.
Sounded better than it was, as the Dynavox software did not play well with Windows and every 2 months I had to have everything reloaded. Also, because the computer was not a 'run of the mill computer', I still had to have it sent to California for repair.
So, our next purchase was a totally different company - Prentke Romich and their Vantage device (this is the new Vantage, DD's is similar, but an older model). (https://store.prentrom.com/product_info.php/cPath/11/products_id/80) That has been a much better device - it's 4 yrs old and has not needed a repair yet. (They do have a similar device to the Dynavox Vmax, called the ECO2). It was a major undertaking to bring DD's Vantage to WDW with us though. It weighs almost 4.5 pounds plus has a mount that weighs almost as much.
Last Spring, they were looking for Beta testers for Proloquo2Go and I signed up. It's not perfect for DD because of the size of the iPod screen, but the graphics are good and the picture is clear. Here is a screen shot of the second part of a page I made for DD's ipod before our WDW trip last March.
http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/IMG_0077.PNG
We've brought the iPod with us for 2 trips now and it was nice to have something small enough that I could throw into my purse!!
After years of being reliant on whatever the communication companies want to provide, it's great to be able to walk into Target or Best Buy or the Apple Store and buy the equipment we need. That's truly revolutionary for someone with special needs.

I'm in the same place. I get a laptop from my school for my work-related stuff, so my home laptop is purely a personal machine. An iPad will do everything that I use Serenity (my home laptop -- what, you don't name your electronic devices?) for, EXCEPT that the iPad doesn't support Flash.
I have hopes that when the iPhose OS 4.0 rolls out, we'll see some sort of Flash support....

and I didn't think the iTouch was worth the money when I already had an iPod that holds my entire music collection.
Sure, you can use Skype or Vonage on the thing, but like the NY Times said this morning-aren't you going to feel a little funny holding this giant clipboard to your ear? And how much battery life would Skype suck off it?
I'm sure there are folks that will buy it the first day (Hi Pete!) and love it. I just don't think it's going to be another game changer like the iPhone or the iPod.
Thought these pics were kind of funny...

For $33 per month and no contract, I would not mind looking funny. :thumbsup2 The phone, web, and 9.7" inch screen has me very interested. The features that Sue mentioned could also help me.
Plus, people would use an earpiece microphone, instead of holding it to their ear.
I will not rush to buy one, but I will rush to try one.:)

I wouldn't hold your breath for Flash support. Jobs has made it pretty clear he does not like flash.
A frankly Flash competes with Itunes. Why would you buy movies and tv shows if you can watch them for free on Hulu and netflix.

I posted this in another thread, but it seemed worthy of here:
I was thinking the other day that two years from now, Jobs will be introducing the next "game changer" - a table running the iPhone OS. And then everyone will be saying how Microsoft had that 4 years earlier...except that no one wanted to pay $12k for a coffee table. But Apple will release it, it will cost $20k, and people will be drooling all over it...until it shorts out the non-replaceable battery.
What would it be called? iTable? iDesk? iKea?

I am a big Apple supporter, and tech junkie. My credentials? I own a 20" iMac, a 24" iMac, a 4 TB MacPro with 30" Apple Cinema Display, an iBook G4, a 17" MacBookPro, a 13" MacBook, a MacBookAir, a first gen iPhone, two iPhone 3GS 32 GB (one for me and one for my wife), three 140 GB Apple TVs, two iPod Shuffles, 6 iPods (various generations)...I even own the Apple Hifi and the Apple Bluetooth headset (two previous iFails). I love the quality of their products, the Apple OS, the look and feel of their products, their functionality, how revolutionary they have been, etc. etc.
The iPad...I just don't get it. No camera? No USB input? No flash? Single App usage capability? At 7.5" wide and 10" tall, it is almost the size of a standard sheet of notebook paper; how do you hold the device and type on the keyboard? If it is truly "the best web surfing experience ever," where is the flash capability? If it is a computer, why must I have another computer to sync content? This is a disappointing concept; not just disappointing execution. The iPad 2.0 needs some drastic overhaul to make it appealing to me.
