Hi everyone,
My WDW class meets for the first time at 7:00pm EST tonight!
We'll be talking about the boards (and you'll meet them this week as well, as they will be required to become involved in the community).
They're a smart group of students - I hope you enjoy getting to know them as much as I do.
Ok - a few of them are punks - but we'll check this thread during class - so I'm okay with them knowing I think that. :lmao:

Hi, everybody!
I'm one of the students in the class. I've been a Disney fan all of my life, so being in a Disney World themed class was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. I have been fortunate enough to visit Walt Disney World about 25 times, Disneyland 6 times, and Disneyland Paris once. My favorite attraction at Walt Disney World is Splash Mountain.
I'm looking forward to checking out these forums as well as the Podcasts!

My class started tonight and the students found out they must, as a requirement of the course, become involved in the boards (lucky them).
I'm starting this thread so you can get to know them (and vice versa).
They should start showing up and posting within the next few days.

Hello, there!
I'm Layne, a freshman and happy to be a student in the "Communication Around the 'World'" class. I'm a huge Disney fan, and have been to Walt Disney World about 25 times. My family tends to think of it as our second home. My favorite Walt Disney World attraction is Splash Mountain. I'm looking forward to posting on the forums.

Well, I usually end up staying at Pop Century or one of the All-Star Resorts, but of all of them I ever stayed at, the Contemporary was my favorite. Being able to see the park and having the Grand Canyon Concourse out my front door was great.

What a great class!. Welcome Layne, Erika, Courtney and those who are yet to come.
We have stayed at WDW only once and stayed at YC. We loved it. We all enjoyed Storm-along Bay, had a lovely room that looked out over the lagoon and found that staff nothing but terrific. We are From California, so our 'home' park is Disneyland. We love to stay at the Grand Californian.
Hope you enjoy your class.

Hello:
I am one of Dave's lovely students as well. I am a frequent flyer of the great Walt Disney World. I am fortunate to be apart of a family who is DVC member (Disney Vacation Club) for my classmates who may not know. We try to go every year.
My last trip was this past Christmas and as always the Holiday Season is amazing. The decorations and festivities and my favorite the Candlelight Procession at EPCOT.
In regards to the question earlier about my favorite place to stay it is a Tie between Boardwalk Villas and Old Key West. Boardwalk is located close to 2 parks and Old Key West Villas are very large.
My "Rap Sheet" of Disney Resorts Consist of the following.
- Old Key West
- Dixie Landings (aka Port Orleans Riverside)
- Beach Club Villas
- Board Walk Villas (Our DVC Homebase)
- Saratoga Springs Villas
- Disney's Grand Californian Hotel (Disneyland Resort)
Well I am done rambling now. And now my question for everyone.
What is your Favorite EPCOT Country to eat at?

Saratoga Springs was nice I stayed there as it was in the process of being completed. The only thing that was a slight issue for me was it was a little father from the parks so transportation took a little longer and the rooms were a little smaller. But as well know the size of Villas keep getting smaller and smaller with each one they build.
However I can't wait to try the new Villas at the Bay Lake Tower. What a awesome view it has of the Magic Kingdom especially at fireworks time.

Well...it depends what I'm hungry for, of course!
France is great for its bakery. And its mac-n-cheese. And its creme brulee.
I love the mushrooms at Rose & Crown (UK)
Enjoy the hibachi at Teppan Edo (Japan).
Guess those are my favorites inside the park...but to be fair, I haven't tried Tutto Italia or the new incarnation of Nine Dragons, nor have I eaten in Norway (except for their school bread).

We ate at Tutto Italia right when it opened a few years back and it was very nice had a great selection. Then when we ate there this past Holiday the selection was much smaller then before.
Price is always a concern and it was around 18-30 dollars a plate I believe but I am a firm believer in the Dining Plan even though it gets skimpier every year. We def got our moneys worth.

How are Old Key West and Saratoga Springs? I'm not in DVC and I've never been to either.
Old Key West was the first DVC Resort and the rooms are fabulous and extremely spacious compared to the other Villas that they are building now. As with Saratoga Springs Transportation to the Parks is more difficult than others because of the locations but for both its easy travel to Downtown Disney if your a fan of that.
Old Key West layout allows for lots of quiet pools as they are called which I really like cause there is hardly anyone there at the nighttime so you can relax in the hot tub or do some laps but thats pretty much standard at all those types of resorts that are spread out.
I am so excited to experience the Pop Century Resort cause I havnt been in a Studio style setting since Dixie Landing which will be awesome

Right now, our favorite meal in Epcot was Biergarten in Germany. That was the one place DH said we HAVE to do again on the next trip. We have not eaten at every place in the World Showcase - that's part of what I like about it, we look forward to trying new places and trying new foods when we go.

Post on the DIS boards for College credit.. That sounds like a tough assignment!! I wish I had professors like Dave and Dave when I was in school!!
Welcome to the Boards Everyone!! You will find a plethora of Disney (and every other kind) of knowledge here along with great people.
Lifelong friendships have been formed here along with a few marriages. We laugh together when things are happy and we send prayers and pixie dust when times are tough. This is so much more than a Disney website and I hope you get as much out of these boards as many of us have and you stick around long after class is over!!
Since you asked my favorite resort is Port Orleans French Quarter and I still love LeCellier (I know it has gone down hill over the years but I still love it!!)

Just curious: what did you think of the CM's in Paris????
The CM's were all fine. I actually got into a discussion with one of them in the line for Space Mountain because I was wearing a California Screamin' shirt. He was a coaster enthusiast trying to save up money to make a dream trip to America to ride roller coasters, which I thought was funny because we were on our dream trip to Disneyland Paris.

3) Any advice for a WDW virgin?
Hmm great questions!
1) My 3 top things at WDW would be: 1) Tower of Terror, my favourite ride ever! 2) Illuminations, the fireworks at Epcot, preferably on a boat with a few of my favorite Dis-ers! 3) Wishes, the fireworks at Magic Kingdom, just beautiful!
2)I think Disney Cast Members do a fantastic job of catering for all ages (in my opinion much better than the Disneyland Paris staff). I feel just as welcome to hug Tigger at the age of 21 as I did when I was 8. I think as you get older, Disney provides little things to really boost the adult experience. I think Walt just got it about right when he said that it was a place for a family to go together, and no one gets bored!
3) Have a fantastic time! I would highly recommend a bit of planning, so you can get all of your 'must- do's' out the way. But recognise that you won't see or do everything, and that stopping to watch a parade or see the little extra Disney adds, makes it all worth while! I personally try and see the Dapper Dan's at least once each trip! I think they are fantastic! Have an amazing time! I am so jealous that you get to see it all for the first time, what I wouldn't do to have that experience all over again!

1) Tell me your top 3 things I must experience
2) When you are at Disney, do you feel like the staff tries to take care of everyone or focus more on children?
3) Any advice for a WDW virgin?
Top 3 things:
1. Shopping: a leisurely stroll through Downtown Disney in the afternoon when it isn't as crowded - bright colors, neat items, and nice atmosphere to enjoy a leisurely pace without feeling "like you have to fit it all in" that day
2. Rides: Test Track at Epcot/Splash Mountain at Magic Kingdom/RockNRollerCoaster at Hollywood Studios - just simple fun and gives you a full experience to see the details that go into the park whether waiting in line, on the ride, etc...
3. A Disney Resort...i've stayed both on-site and off, and it's hard to explain the incredible amount of details that go on -- but it adds to the experience, because you're bathed in themes - adds to your vacation
---
Staff - equally treats adults and kids well from what I've experienced...they really do add to the overall experience...everyone feels special
---
Advice - plan ahead - haaa, Disney offers more than most people realize - it's MUCH bigger, more to do, and can be overwhelming when you try to fit in everything, every time. Pick and choose a few things you'd really enjoy, and plan ahead - oh yeah, and dining - plan ahead too...it's not like going to the local pub and waiting for a table, you need reservations for many places in advance.

Hello, class. I'm Todd. I DIS while at work, so I am here frequently.
Okay Dave, I'm asking questions--
1) Tell me your top 3 things I must experience
2) When you are at Disney, do you feel like the staff tries to take care of everyone or focus more on children?
3) Any advice for a WDW virgin?
1) That is a difficult question to answer. Depends on what your interests are. :goodvibes And by using the qualifier "must", you may feel your trip was a wash if you couldn't experience it. That being said, I would highly recommend:
A) Illuminations: Reflections of Earth at Epcot and Wishes at the Magic Kingdom, particularly with someone special
B) The WDW mountain range. (Space, Splash, Big Thunder, Everest). Even if you don't normally do rides, check em out. The theming is superb.
C) Ride Hollywood Tower of Terror and Rockin' Roller Coaster back to back.
2) Yes and no. I notice that when a family interacts with a cast member, the cast member usually focuses on the children in the group, which is what the parents usually expect. The parents smile and beam because their kid(s) are the center of attention. Not having children and being an adult, I would also say that cast members put just as much effort into engaging adult guests as well.
3) Get something to eat/drink (Mickey Ice Cream bar or Dole whip, for example) and stroll along. Watch people. Look at the details. Watch the characters interact with the guests. Notice the intricacies of the architecture.

Great Place to Try. One of my top Favs on Disney Property Teppan Endo for those of you who dont know is a open "family" style Japanese Cuisine. You sit around a grill with seating for 8 as the Cook prepares your food right in front of you, with a little entertainment. Also if you have any food allergies or are vegetarian they are very accommodating. One member in my party is allergic to shell fish so they cleaned the grill fully and prepared her food first.
Try the Iced Green Tea and the Green Tea Pudding.

Question One:
There are three of us in our family and you would probably get three completely different answers. So I will give you mine...and I'm the mom so that's the one that really matters right?
Mickey's Philharmagic
Wishes
Fantasmic
Question Two
I think the staff focus' on the entire family and I feel that is appropriate.
Question Three
Don't go to Disney without doing at least a little research. I think there is such a thing as overplanning but you will be very disappointed if you don't research and plan at least a little. Also if you like to have a nice sit down meal each day or at all on vacation do yourself a favor and make dining reservations in advance.
Hope you guys have a wonderful class. Look forward to meeting more of you.

Beauty AKA Grasshopper,
Good Questions! I my humble opinion:
1. The Magic Kingdom at Rope Drop and at night for Wishes. Day time MK and Night time MK are like two different parks. Well, same Park, different Magic!
Illiminations in Epcot.
A Dole Whip.
2. When I was a child, I thought the Cast Members catered to children. As an adult I think the cast members focus on adults. I think they work hard and making everyones experence Magical.
3. Take a College class on Disney! Do some research and figure out what is important for you to do. Take your time and notice the details. You will never get everything done in one trip! Wear comfortable shoes. Stay out of the lakes.

Okay Dave, I'm asking questions--
1) Tell me your top 3 things I must experience
2) When you are at Disney, do you feel like the staff tries to take care of everyone or focus more on children?
3) Any advice for a WDW virgin?
1. Soarin at Epcot! Toy Story Mania at Disney's Hollywood Studios, Safari in Animal Kingdom.
2. I think many of the cast members try very hard to make you have a great time in the parks. I never felt slighted because I wasn't a child.
3. Don't think you can see it all. Take time to appreciate the small details that Disney is great at. Look at the details on the rides and buildings.

My favorite place to eat in Epcot is Le Cellier (I know, but I love the pretzel bread sticks & soup.)
My favorite place to stay is Wilderness Lodge (non DVC) and Boardwalk if I am coming DVC. I don't like BLT (:confused3 :scared1:) there, I said it in public
Top 3 things to experince:goodvibes
I love Kali River Rapids, Toy Story Mania, Lion King Show.
But most of all I love walking down Main Street on the first day of every trip.
I am 61 years young and have traveled with/without kidlets. I have never felt the CM's paid more attention to me than the children. I think they take their cue from you and what you are looking for. I think the CM's are nice to everyone (except the ones that missed their pixie dust class, and those are few and far between).:cloud9:
& Lastly to the WDW Virgin. Take the time to smell the roses. If you run through the parks trying to do everything you will miss much. Don't over schedule yourself or your family. Take time to watch the delight in a child's face when they see a character for the first time. watch the families giggle with delight when a talking trash can follows them around the park. Look at the faces of the children and adults during the parades. I know I have cried a tear or two of joy at the parks. Find that joy and then share it. take pictures, but don't let the camera get in your way. A made a picture album for my 5 year old nieces, who go down every year, when they were 4. Yesterday my niece went and found the album and asked her mom to go through it with her and they talked about all the things that they did and the things they are going to do when they go down this summer. Capture the memories, and may all of your memories be good ones. Have fun in your class. wish they had a class like this when I was in college. I am retiring soon and would love to teach a class like this. :lmao: Penny
ps - if you want personalized anything, check out the Creative DISign forum. They do t-shirt DISigns, autograph cards, journals, Epcot country books, and on & on & on the list goes. P:cloud9:

My sister and I did that last year before we went to WDW. When my sister and I got to the Magic Kingdom we took a photo in front of the Castle in the same pose we were in the very first time went in 1971. It is amazing how much in the parks has changed and how much has stayed the same!

3: All the firework shows

I feel like the castmembers try to take care of everybody, 3 years old, 13 years old 30 years old 60 years old it doesn't make a difference.
I do believe that children interact back more with the castmembers then adults do.
If you just let the interacting be there and if you also participate along then it's for all ages.
3) Any advice for a WDW virgin?
Research research research.
Did i mentioned research??
Go on the boards, read about WDW.
A visit to WDW needs to be planned, there is so much to see and do that you can't do it all in once. And without any preparation your vacation won't be the same magical vacation as it could be with preparation done.

Yea but what does it mean?
if you look at how many hits each word gets
wdw- 1,600,00
teaching- 190,000,000
class -746,000,000
The combination- 112,000
So out of 112,000 we sites on the internet that have the phrase "wdw teaching class" we are number in the number 2 position in google on a thread that's only been on the internet for a few days. Why did it jump ahead of the other 111,998 sites that have the SAME keywords?

Now, now. This is Prof. Dave's class, he should be touted as a smarty pants, too.
When I chaperoned some college students earlier this month (nothing cool like your class, they were on an alternative winter break program) we went to the Magic Kingdom. A few of them had been there multiple times, but most of them had only been there once when they were elementary school aged.
The park was not crowded and we arrived around 1:30 or 2pm. As a group we rode:
Space Mountain
its a small world
Haunted Mansion
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Pirates of the Caribbean
Then we split up and rode whatever we wanted. It turned out most students rerode the same rides because they enjoyed them the first time.
We then all rendezvoused to watch SpectroMagic and Wishes. It was a perfectly lovely day.:goodvibes

Top three things:
- generically, the rides come top for me. The theming, the fun, everything about them!
- Dole Whips, I still remember them from when I was little
- Again generically the fireworks (Ive not been for 12 years but planning a trip this year so afraid Im being fairly generic as the specifics may have changed somewhat).
Castmember interaction
- well I've been as a kid and as a teenager and felt equally as important both times... I'm hoping that will remain the same visiting as an adult
Top tip
- dont try to do it all at once, you'll wear yourself out and miss a lot of the detail that goes into the parks and attractions... plus if you dont do everything then it gives you a great excuse to come back!
And now a quick question from me- genuine question here- I'm from the UK and cant imagine ever in a million years being able to take a course on WDW at Uni (unless it was discussing the business model behind it or as part of a film or stage course)- is this course part of a vocational degree? Like are you studying one main thing and this is just an added bonus of an excellent course that gives you credit? Sorry if that question sounds dumb I'm just curious as really this sounds like the best class ever!

Hey Amanda,
This class is worth honors-humanites. I'm a Bio-Ed student so this class would count toward my general education requirements (but I already have that filled) So I am taking this class for the joy of seeing Dave every Sunday :) plus I've never been to Florida, so I'm looking forward to traveling. Also, like almost every kid, I grew up with Disney--its a special company that rocks at anything it does!
Hope that helped!:ccat:

Like Courtney said, it counts for humanities-honors credit. I myself am a pre-nursing major, so the class is something extra I decided to do, but I believe everyone will benefit from this class because the main thing we are studying is the different types of communication in and surrounding wdw. In the classroom part of the course we are learning about how wdw uses customer service, themeing, and design to convey messages and communicate with guests. We are also learning about how word of mouth and fandom are also a major part of how wdw extends its communication beyond when a guest is in the park, which is why we are becoming part of this and other communities as well as reading blogs and listening to podcasts about wdw.
Which leads me to a question for everyone. Before I joined this class I never knew there were these types of forums and communities about wdw, and would have never thought about joining one. How did you hear about disboards.com, and why did you join?

In February of 2008, I was looking for information on a special anniversary trip for my partner and I. He has never been to WDW and I wanted to have a splendid time. I couldn't decide which of the three monorail resorts to stay in so I had to see what other guests thought. I found Allears' reviews and threads here on the DIS. I read them for hours that weekend. I ended up deciding that a split stay of 3 night MK view main tower at the Contemporary and 4 night Poly concierge would be the best for us. However, the economy tanked and our trip fell through. I'm still a member here on the DIS and have gone on a few DIS adventures. Due to the DIS I will be going back to WDW in 100 days! (Tomorrow I do the double digit dance!!!!:dance3:) Reading the boards led me to the podcast (I'm so antique that I knew they existed by didn't know what they were...).

Like Todd I came here looking for particular information. I was planning my first trip as an "adult" and although I had been there many times as a kid planning your own trip is a whole new expierence. After that we went on atleast 1 trip a year for 6 years so I spent a good amount of time here looking at menu's resort information and asking questions. I post alot but I lurk even more. These days I spend most of my time on this board but if I had a trip I was planning I would be all over the place.

Simple just google it and it will tell you right on the screen 1 to 10 of about xxxxx
Because they use different algorithms see below
...because Google is awesome?
It probably has to do with with both how recent this thread is, how active it has been, how active this site is, and various other factors other than site hits.
Sort of kind of
Google has a formula they use. Nobody knows the actual formula, Google regards it as a trade secret. People have guesses and you can see that here:
http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/internet/google-ranking-factors.htm
Beyond that we know that links from other sites are a HUGE key factor and the higher the site rank of the site providing the links the more it helps.
Anytime anyone links to the dis it boosts our rating but if they do it from a big domain, like CNN or nytimes.com (New York Times Newspaper) It counts for a heck of a lot more. This is a relatively large site. According to Big-boards.com we are the 29th largest discussion board on the internet. Tons of people provide us links including some of the large news orginizations so google ranks us very high. They tend to like discussion boards and forums in general.
To answer an earlier question Bing has a completely different ranking method that they developed so results will never match except the obvoius first 1 or 2 hits

A freind told me about the boards when we were talking about WDW and didn't know the answer to a specific question. I joined and "stay" because
1. I have met some really fun people who love Disney like I do.
2. There is a thread on the DISabilities board that has a wonderful community of people with Fibromyalgia & Celiac Disease where we have gotten to know each other and support each other on a regular basis .
3. The Podcasts are very adictive and entertaining!
4. I get really great up to date information from people who always ready to jump in and help.
5. The information is unbiased.

As not to be repetitive...I'm taking it for the same honors-humanities credit but what I have found so interesting is that people hire Disney to teach their company about customer service. I am a Medical Science major but customer service can come in so many different forms and the way that Disney employees make each person get that 'magical' experience is incredible and an aspect that I think everyone should learn about.

Thanks to all who answered my question about your course- genuinely interesting answers there! I definitely think that the basis of your course sounds interesting, entertaining and engaging- if there had been a course like this when I was at uni a few years ago I would have jumped on it! So much more enjoyable learning the 'dry stuff' when the way it is framed is of genuine interest.
To answer the question of how I found Disboards- I was googling Disney one day years back (probably killing time in the Uni library :rotfl2: ) and I came across 'The Dibb' which are similar boards but aimed towards a British audience.... from there I was led to Disboards. I discovered the podcast by searching the directory for WDW when i first got my Ipod and I realised the podcast linked into this site- which has prompted me to start lurking again. :)

Back in 1999 I belonged to another community. There was a lot of fighting and name calling and the community broke up. Some of the members found this site and one of them recommended it to me. I used the site to do research and then started hanging out in the Creative DISign forum. Before I knew it, it was 10 years later. LOL A great bunch of people with lots of good information.
After my first Disney trip in 1995 I got interested in learning more about the parks. I had been on Prodigy and they closed their bulletin boards so was looking for another trip planning site and I found the DIS. I have met many wonderful people in person from posting here. I have learned so much Disney info here.

welcome students!! Okay Dave, I'm asking questions--
1) Tell me your top 3 things I must experience
2) When you are at Disney, do you feel like the staff tries to take care of everyone or focus more on children?
3) Any advice for a WDW virgin?1) top 3 things to experience- WISHES fireworks, a character meal (preferably with big cheese himself), Tower of Terror
2) yes, as a former cast member (staff at disney are 'cast members'), i know how hard many of them work and how passionate they are about EVERY guests experience. sure, kids get some attention, but I would reach out to the parents or the elderly couple just as often to make their day special.
3) advice for a first timer - RESEARCH. you will see, do and experience more with a little research and planning. no need to plan away every minute, but at least know park hours, top attractions to hit early to avoid crowds, best dining spots, where to catch great entertainment etc.
Which leads me to a question for everyone. Before I joined this class I never knew there were these types of forums and communities about wdw, and would have never thought about joining one. How did you hear about disboards.com, and why did you join?i remember my first time on the internet was back in like 1993. my sophomore year in a sales management class and our professor assigned us to get on the internet in the computer lab and search for something on the web. that was my first web experience. lol I actually joined this site back in 1999. I did my college program with WDW back in 1996 and there were very few sites like this back then. I was trying to find a place to share my passion for disney and ran across this site in 99. I've been a member ever since, although I did more reading than posting. I've been an active poster the last 3 years or so. My husband has been part of a similar forum/group for mustangs fans (as in the car) in DFW for over 15 years, so i was already familiar with the idea and had been posting there for awhile.
Yea but what does it mean?
if you look at how many hits each word gets
wdw- 1,600,00
teaching- 190,000,000
class -746,000,000
The combination- 112,000
So out of 112,000 we sites on the internet that have the phrase "wdw teaching class" we are number in the number 2 position in google on a thread that's only been on the internet for a few days. Why did it jump ahead of the other 111,998 sites that have the SAME keywords?credible links- you guys have a ton- plus supposedly you get more credit for the one way credible links into your site instead of the 2 way. Plus this site is obviously really dynamic, with info being updated and changed all the time. fresh content means more credit too! Of course careful placement of keywords/metatags etc. for organic search. It seems blogs and forums get more attention (again, more dynamic) I don't know much about Bing's setup.

Hey Amanda,
This class is worth honors-humanites.

And now a quick question from me- genuine question here- I'm from the UK and cant imagine ever in a million years being able to take a course on WDW at Uni (unless it was discussing the business model behind it or as part of a film or stage course)- is this course part of a vocational degree? Like are you studying one main thing and this is just an added bonus of an excellent course that gives you credit? Sorry if that question sounds dumb I'm just curious as really this sounds like the best class ever!
Wonder (Amanda) xx
Hi Amanda!
I am also a UK university student , I did do one week on one of my courses about Disney. It was in my American Studies elective, and we debated the difference between 'Disney-fication' and 'Americanisation'. But I would love a whole Disney course! (doesn't fit in well with a history degree though)

Also learning good customer service in the medical field will reduce your chances of being sued...Let's face it, people don't sue people they like :)

What is your Favorite EPCOT Country to eat at?

In World Showcase:
Italy! In addition, I'm looking forward to the new pizzeria by the Patina Group which should be opening at the Italy pavilion later this year.
China (counter service) for the egg rolls. However, lately I found the egg rolls at Yak and Yeti’s in AK better.
Norway for the pastry. :goodvibes

But time for the serious questions.
If I wanted to go on the coolest ride in WDW... Where would I start?
Where's the best place to eat at EPCOT, seeing as it has about 4956 different eateries and venues.
And this being a college class, is it totally unheard of to have a place where college aged kids like to go to? Not saying that the "its a small world" ride isn't thrilling (since I plan on going on it about 9 times ) , but just wondering if older students like a certain park better or something along those lines.

I'd say the coolest ride would have to be the Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Excellent theming and effects combined with a random sequence of 13 story drops all faster than gravity make for an awesome experience.

Hi Jordan, my son (teenager) and I are both adrenaline junkies-- and for that we love "Rock N Rollercoaster" at Disney Hollywood Studios - he's a big fan of Tower of Terror also....
At Epcot - we love Test Track - fun, along with neat details while you wait in line.
Magic Kingdom - big fans of Space Mountain and Splash Mountain -- and you've got Expedition Everest (coaster) over at Animal Kingdom
One of the cool things about Disney is there's something for everyone. It's not like going to a smaller theme park like say Six Flags....where you can do it in a day...Disney is massive, many parks, many themes, something for everyone...it's huge.
Not sure if these are the "coolest" rides, but they'll get you pumped and you won't feel like it's "just a kid's place"...Disney is about so much more than the rides though...the themes, the details...it's EVERYWHERE...details on every mancover, ever fence post, every window...it's how nothing is overlooked, and is not like when you go to a smaller theme park and run from ride to ride....at Disney, even the walk from place to place is pretty darn amazing - because there's so much to see, and so much to take in...
oh yeah, and there's waterparks, golf, downtown disney, disneyquest, movie theater, tons of resorts...and the list goes on - it's huge.

Coolest ride would probably be Tower of Terror or Rockin Roller Coaster. As for food at Epcot, Sunshine Season's in the Land is a good counter service place to eat, and I enjoy Chefs de France for a table service meal.
Hollywood Studios seems to be a bigger draw for college age people.

i would have to vote Tower of Terror- it is one of my faves, the attention to detail is so great and the ride itself is a total thrill and different everytime. I never get tired of it.
for Epcot eating:
fast food- voting wtih everyone else- the foodcourt at the Land Pavilion has a nice selection and healthy choices beyond the standard burger/fries.
for sit down- it's cliche, but Le Cellier is a favorite, as well as Chefs De France. I need to try more. I actually enjoyed Coral Reef for lunch too- great atmosphere and food wasn't bad either!
for college kids liking a certain park......well other than sentimental value, Fantasyland and Mickey's toon town are out. :rotfl: I would say maybe Epcot. There is the opp to eat and drink around the world. of course the drinking part is a big hit with college aged students. Used to be on a certain week night at PI, you could find all the college program students out partying at PI (there was a special CM night to get in free i think), but that is no longer. Mannequins and Adventurers club were always fun. Since PI is really no longer, some might enjoy Citywalk at Universal, but that isn't the 'world'.

I am also a University student, however I don't think students 'hang' much at Disney, its a family place which tries to find something for everyone. There are some pretty cool rides, Tower of Terror and Rock'n'Roller Coaster at Disney's Hollywood Studios and Mission Space (for those who like seeing their lunch again) at Epcot. However other theme parks near by such as Universal or Bush Gardens tend to cater to those who prefer the thrill rides over ambience (not a dig by any means, they just know their target audiences). Talking to people my age, they seem much more thrilled by the idea of going upside down 40 times and getting the adrenaline rush than seeing shows and attractions, where as I get my adrenaline pumping by the monorail! :rotfl:
To be honest, I'd really like to learn a lot of the kinda dark past of Disney World. Which will probably be hard, but I think it would be nice to know some of the truths about the history - surely it can't all be magical dreams and fairy dust.
Disney is by no means fairy dust, it has had loads of issues from failing films, potential hostile take over bids, warring management. I am currently reading Disney War, which isn't all sunshine! I also read an autiobiography of Walt that wasn't 100% flattering. However discussing it on Disney die-hard fan boards isn't always in your best interests! Some people are very protective, which is fine, but can often lead to a difficult debate. :hippie:

Hello Jordan,
It looks like people covered the cool rides in their replys.
Depending on the older student I think they will
like Epcot or Disney Studios.
There are aloy of places to eat in Epcot. That is one of the best things about the park. I like to eat at the counter service in Morocco, but I love Moroccan food. What kind of food do you like? Lets say you like Chinese and Mexican. Look up the menues on line (wdwinfo.com) and then check out peoples reviews. Heck, almost anything you are thinking of eating has had a picture of it posted by someone!

Is there any other word that you know of that can make this claim to fame?

This youtube vid shows the original EPCOT plan. While not necessarily "dark" it does show how Walt communicated his ideas to the public via the weekly television show. The current EPCOT is much different than the original plan. Give it a :surfweb:

Im pretty jealous over here that you get to take a class about disney. I havent read through the entire thread yet, but i thought id chime in on a few things i saw earlier.
Places to "hang" at WDW for our age group...While I was in the college program we had a ton of experience doing this, and while everyone loves to go on all the classic disney rides, there were several places we always flocked to. Tower of terror, rockin roller coaster, mission space, space mountain, and everest are the "cool" rides for us. EPCOT is one of the best places too if you can catch off kilter, or british invasion. My favorite restaurant there is le cellier. And dont forget that as far as nightlife types of things go, house of blues is one of your only options, but very fun.

Hi Everyone!!
Welcome to the Dis!!
Your class sounds great!!
And speaking of university, my very first visit to WDW was at the end of my freshman year in university - way back in May, 1974. After finishing our first year at Johns Hopkins, my roommate and I drove down to WDW from Baltimore (in a pinto  ) .
We camped for a week at Fort Wilderness (in a tent), then I moved over to the Contemporary Resort to join my family for a week (they'd flown down from Detroit to meet me).
Well the rest was history. I've visited WDW at least once a year since then, introducing my husband to WDW on our honeymoon in 1978 and then continued the brain-washing project with our kids.
They don't call us Disneyholic family for nothing.
While we would visit WDW about twice a year when we lived in Michigan, since moving to Israel, we've had to resign ourselves to one visit a year - albeit a nice long 3 week visit. But those 3 weeks race by faster than you can imagine.
Anyway, i guess this is a warning to the 'virgins' among you. There's NO TURNING BACK now. :goodvibes

Is it too late to apply for the Fall 2010 semester at Western Illinois? Because I'm going back to school in IL (my home state) -- I'd be transferring in as a junior -- and I would seriously love to take this class! :lmao:
Seriously, I just read this whole board and this class sounds like a blast!
This is just an honors class that isn't usually taught, Dave just decided to teach it this semester and we're not sure if it will continue to be taught in future semesters. As far as getting accepted to Western, all the scholarshisps have been given out, but I think you can still apply.

Awesome, thanks for that info. Besides the rides (which i loved them all when I went to WDW) What was your favorite attraction? I remember the 3-D videos were pretty fun, but I can't remember much more of the featured attractions at the parks.

So i know this is completely off topic, be we have been talking about perceptions a lot in class, how the Disney cast always smiles, aren't allowed to have tattoos, or piercings, and even are required to take tests before they are allowed to be maskless characters.
Taking image into consideration, and Superbowl Sunday (mandate christmas), what are you predictions for today. Mine: Saints 38 Colts 35

Two things...
One, I'm happy for the Saints this year and it truly is an impressive story for them to make it to the super bowl for the first time in franchise history. However, this "Cinderalla" story may end soon. I just think Peyton Manning has more experience in these high profile games then Drew does. I am looking forward to the game though and think it will be a close one.
Two, I am a runner for Western and was given a workout for the week we will be in WDW. Does anyone have any suggestions that would be good places to get some running in. I will only be running 5 or 6 miles tops each day so the route doesn't have to be long, just something that is relatively flat. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Where are you staying when you go? I saw many people running when we stayed at the Boardwalk. I am thinking you could run to Epcot, then run back around the lake and then down to DHS and back? I think if you do it twice it might be 5 or 6 miles. As I believe it is over a mile for me to walk from the Parking Lot into Epcot, I obviously have nooooo perception of distance. :goodvibes Let's just say I wouldn't want to walk it twice. :scared1:Penny

NOT that we want to be out late or anything but if the parks close a little early one time and we are still up for some Disney fun, are their any places that you suggest to check out? Like I said, they talk a lot about Downtown Disney and mention that there are a lot of restaurants that stay open late, as well as movie theaters, popcorn:: but I thought maybe some of you would have suggestions on somewhere to check out!? Keeping in mind that we are all under 21 and won't be heading to any bars or anything. :yay:

I would definitely check out Downtown Disney and go shopping. The World of Disney is my favorite store! You could also go to different resorts after park hours and check out the restaurants there. It might be fun to go to Beaches and Cream at the Beach Club and get ice cream. They also have this huge sundae big enough for 4-5 people called the Kitchen Sink.

Hello, since I am new to Disney World....How does the fast pass system work...how often can you use them..how do you get them.....and do you recommend a fast pass when visting the parks..
Fast Pass is like getting a reservation ticket for certain rides/attractions. This allows you to do other things instead of waiting in the long line, and return at an appointed time to the attraction. You insert your park ticket into the machine, it prints out a fast pass and spits your ticket back out to you. Printed on the Fast Pass there will be a time range for which you can return to the Fast Pass line and have a shortened wait to ride the ride or experience the attraction. Printed much smaller at the bottom is when you can get your next Fast Pass. You can get your next fass pass two hours after you got the last one or if the time on the one you are holding has passed, whichever is first.
A good rule of thumb is to get a fast pass for a headliner attraction (Space Mountain, Expedition Everest, Toy Story Mania, Soarin', for example) instead of some attractions where there would be little or no line if you went later on (Maelstrom for example).
They are free.
I recommend using them.
I belive me and my classmates are staying at the Pop Centrey.. What should I know about this hotel..and what is it like..
Thanks
I stayed there in December. By "stayed there" I mean slept showered and dressed. We averaged about 5 hours per day (to do aforementioned activities) at the Pop Century. It served its purpose nicely. I wasn't there to relax and lounge around the room.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed Nemo, my favorite is Beauty and the Beast. Since they are at different parks, I would think you would be able to do a show at one park one day, then do the other show in the other park the other day and not have to choose between the two.

The only wrinkle here is that, with shows on a schedule - you have to be in the right place at the right time. For example - Beauty and the Beast and Nemo don't have any shows later in the day (I don't believe).

Pirates of the Caribbean is my favorite attraction at Walt Disney World!! The details are absolutely amazing and it seems that every time I ride it I see something new. Since the attraction inspired the movie, the movie has now inspired the attraction - Davy Jones, Hector Barbossa, and Captain Jack Sparrow have all been added. This is one of the classic disney attractions, and knowing that this was the last attraction Walt worked on makes it even more special to me. pirate:

So one of the huge things we've been discussing in class is about how the theme stays consistant throughout the entire park/land as you go through. Everything from the garbage cans, to the benches, to the lightposts are all themed. I'm hoping to really observe these details while on teh trip and see if there are any areas where they might not have followed the certain theme around them. Has anyone ever seen anything out of the ordinary that might break this rule. Something like a traditional bench in Frontierland. I know it's really pushing it, but I assume that it takes a lot of work to keep all the lands 100% themed so I want to see if there are any "slip ups" per say.

To the best of my knowledge the themeing at the Magic Kingdom is spectacular. There are very few points at which the scene is broken. One of these is near the bathrooms by Pinocchio's Village Haus looking toward Tomorrowland. Go. Look for yourself.
