View Full Version : Okay book exchangees...

...let's get this exchange going!

If you'd like to participate (anyone is welcome as long as you have at least 1 book to exchange) send me an email ( rajah@stardustdreams.net -- pm me if you have problems) with the following information:

Your (real) name:
Your mailing address:
Your DIS name:
Your email address:

Book information for every book offering:
Title:
Author(s):
Genre: (mystery, fiction, science fiction, etc)
Special features: (audio, large text, another language, etc)
Anything else you'd like to note: (optional)

In order to participate, you must offer at least one book up for exchange. You can offer up to 10. The number of books you will be allowed to recieve will depend on the number of books offered. If you offer one book, you'll get one book in the exchange. If you offer 5, you will get up to 5 books in the exchange. The hope is that for every book you send out, you will get one in return.

You do not need to go to the book store and get a book to participate. The idea for this exchange is to trade books that we have lying around the house that either we didn't read and won't read, or we've read and don't feel we need to keep, or we have duplicate copies of. Books must be in readable condition (that is, not falling apart at the seams, pages not torn or smeared or missing, etc). Books do not have to be in mint condition -- worn pages, worn cover, folded backing and so on are acceptable as long as the book is still readable and isn't going to fall apart when someone tries to read it.

The idea behind this exchange is to exchange for-fun books -- so please don't offer up that Programming with PASCAL textbook you have from 12 years ago ;) At least not without offering some fun books, too. Non-fiction books such as biographies are okay, though.

If you have any questions, post here, drop me an email, or PM me. Right now we're just in the information-collection stage.

I'll take names and books through August the 9th -- that's two weeks from today. Unlike other exchanges, we're not going to determine when all books must be mailed at this point. That will be decided once we finish the sorting phase.

Stay tuned for more information!

I have a HUGE pile of books in my basement. Some are mine, some are DH...all are fiction. This sounds like a great chance to get rid of some of these and get something new. Great idea/project Rajah

I'm in! Thanks for doing this...

I'll go down in my basement tonight and check out my "book status".... I read mostly fiction/mystery/series. I have 1 or 2 I got in a book club that might be romance or something. I'll check. Does it matter if it's hard cover or paperback?

Thanks again!

As long as you don't mind shipping out a hardback, it doesn't matter whether it's hardback or paperback. :)

I don't have the time to do the exchange, but just wanted to post a friendly cost saving measure for some that have not sent books yet...

You can mail it via the Post Office in a category called Media Mail. The Post Office will ask you if it is a book/cd/or tape? You tell them its a book, and you will be charged a lesser rate than other rates.

It may not get there sooner, but thats a little tidbit I learned off of selling things (books/CD's) off of www.half.com

Any idea how much it would cost to mail an average-sized paperback?

I have to check my bookshelves, I did a "pruning" for the local library not that long ago. I will let you know in the next day or two.

Well, I mailed out a Microsoft Professional Coursework paperback (approx 800-1000 pages), but wider than a usual library paperback... it was $1.87/1.95... less than $2

Thanks for the tip Cindy!

Glad to be of help.. just remember media mail does take a little bit longer, but since time isn't really of the essence, it does come in handy...

The Microsoft Book was textbook size, so since a regular paperbook is smaller, and sometimes less pages, it may be a decent guess. Just don't forget to say Media Mail!

(gosh, I sound like I work for the post office! )

I'll have to check again when I get home, but I think I've heard from about 5 people.

When we send books, do we also include a SASE? How does the return postage work? Or are we sending directly to another DISer?

Are cookbooks ok?

You'll be sending directly to other DISers, probly multiple destinations if you offer up multiple books.

I've told someone else already that cookbooks are okay if offered with other books. If someone wants the cookbook you're offering, it will increase the number of books you can select by one.

So say you offer 2 mysteries and a cook book. If no one wants your cookbook, then you can get 2 books from the list. But if someone wants your cookbook you can get 3.

Make sense?

Another bump -- only one more day (not counting today) to get book information in! I know there were more people who said they were interested than people who actually signed up...

I'd like to do this. Now, I understand the part about how many books you can exchange (offer three books, say only two are taken, you get two?). Do I provide you with the title and author, then people look and see what they want? Or do you just let me know who to send a book to and it is a surprise? Sorry if this is a stupid question. I'll e-mail you right now!

crazyme5kids

Sorry! I just re-read your post and have the info (I had a whiny 1 year old on my lap and two kids talking to me at the same time). I will send all my info before the end of the day tomorrow!

Rajah

Not a problem, Crazy :) I'll be awaiting your email.

(I might also accept stragglers until I get the title list put together and ready to send out, which means through the weekend)

Just emailed my list. I was boring and decided to swap a bunch of books by a single author. Kept it to five to keep the shipping manageable. :)

This should be fun. :)

Due to unexpected locating of a house yesterday that we want (which in turn got us home really late, which in turn made it so I couldn't get the book list put together like I intended), I'm extending the signup date for a few more days. So, I'm bumping this. :)
