Our waitlist for Vero Beach came in. :cool1: Anyone know which airport would be best to fly into (Orlando or West Palm)? (Not planning on doing WDW this trip.) Thanks!

I believe the closest is Melbourne but Orlando has many more flights and usually is cheaper.

Melbourne (MLB) is the closest with Delta(ALT) and USair (CLT) flying in (I think another non-mainline airline from DC??).
Orlando and West Palm are about equal in distance from VB.
We fly into MCO because of the direct/cheaper flights. In february, direct is good.
Have fun in VB!!:goodvibes

I'm sorry to report that my DH called the resort this morning and it is confirmed. The beach itself will close starting Feb. 3 for 4 to 6 weeks for repairs. They are directing guests to a beach that is a few minutes away. We decided to cancel all together and are doing a crazy split at WDW. 1 night at SSR, 2 nights at BW - where we've never stayed before, and the rest at our home, OKW in a 1 BR.

You should definitely fly into Orlando. Unless you happen to depart from a town that does direct flights into Melbourne, driving the 1.5 hours from Orlando airport to Vero Beach is much more efficient than taking a connecting flight into Melbourne. This past November, we took a connecting flight from Detroit to Atlanta then to Melbourne and it took most of the day. We arrived after dark as well and had to drive from Melbourne to Vero Beach for 45 minutes, (I don't like driving after dark if I don't have to). Next time I will just fly to Orlando and drive 1.5 hours, the time goes quickly. Have a great trip!

Vero Beach is closing? We are going March 18-21. Should I be worried?

Not the Hotel - just the beach. They said 4 to six weeks. Starting Feb. 3 You might be the first ones on the brand new beach!

Hmmm, I haven't heard any talk about the beach closing. Did they say how big of a section? They just redid the public access next door and Golden Sands up the road. I would think that there would be beach access close by even while they are closed.:confused3

I don't know if I can post a link, but someone posted this one on the VB thread: If you can't get it, try going to the 2010 VB admiration thread.

Hi FloridaFam!!!:wave2:
I'm not exactly sure how and when they are going to do it but from what I can gather the County is going to truck a bunch of sand from inland to the 6 mile stretch that includes DVBR. They will be using a few (4-5) access places such as Golden Sands, Wabasso beach, Treasure Beach. It sounded like the start date is Feb 9th in the county report update. They will also stop by May 1 (?) for the turtle nesting season.

I can't believe they have the money to bring in all that sand. Thank God they aren't using Brian Davis mentioned at the end of the article. He got in trouble for using contaminated dirt at his jobs.
Aren't we messing with mother nature here?
On the subject of the OP, my parents always fly into Melbourne. It beats going to Orlando to pick them up. It's a nice airport and they have never had a problem.

I can't believe they are going to be trucking all that sand over the Wabasso bridge. They did some work on it about a year ago and it just doesn't feel the same to me. It gives me the creeps driving over it.
How much of the Disney share of the money is actually coming our of our dues?
This is insane.

You know I can't imagine getting to Vero Beach and hearing this first hand as we were checking in. That's why I just wanted to warn everybody. But my husband and I fly in to Orlando. The ride down to Vero Beach is not bad at all. As a matter of fact, we bought a Sun Pass recently.

Thanks so much for the heads-up. Both you and Delauzon were extremely helpful in helping us out. The CM at VB thought that they had sent out a letter. It could be that they did or are in the process of sending it snail-mail. The MS supervisor did apologize and I can see how this project could have snuck up on them. It is a county run project that has be in the pipes for a long time that all of a sudden got approvals. I have to say Disney has been very nice to me about this whole situation.

Not sure if it will make anyone feel better, but I live near Presque Isle, a peninsula on Lake Erie, and they do beach replenishment every year. It's a fact of life that the waves wash away the sand. If they want a beach for tourists to enjoy, they have to truck it in.
