Airfare "Dings" for Dummies?

What is a "ding"?? I see everyone talking about them here, with regards to airfaes, and I don't understand! I don't fly often, so am clueless to stuff like this.:confused3

its a southwest airline notice of a sale ... you install it on your computer and set it to notify you when there is a southwest sale ...
