I'm interested too! I live in the Lehigh Valley, right outside of Allentown. Only 1 hour 15 minutes away. I'd like to stop by for one day! I will spread the word to other Lehigh Valley Diser's to see if they are interested too! Thanks for putting this together!
One more idea: Hummelstown is literally a stone's throw away from Hershey (2 minutes away from Hershey Park) and if you check online, there are several reasonably priced hotels. It is a lot closer than Harrisburg.
Love the Hershey Lodge but it is pricey unless maybe if you can work out a deal based on the number of interested diser's. It is a convention hotel and is really nice!

We actually stayed here when we went to HP a few years ago- right after it opened. They have this little indoor pool that my daughter said was here second favorite pool ever after AKL's pool :confused3:confused3:confused3.
I hope we can make it- football practice will have started so need to get that schedule first.

Hershey Lodge is $299/night and even if they gave us a group discount I don't think it would be cost effective. If anyone wants to stay at a more expensive hotel, no problem......we can just meet up other places

I have some calls and emails into some hotels in the Hummelstown/Harrisburg area. So far, it looks like their rates will be higher than the first hotel I posted about.
So, what I need to know is, what is everyone looking for in a hotel? Is price the biggest factor? Ammenities? Internet? Breakfast? Is there a "cut-off" amount that you will go up to, (i.e. won't pay more than $150/night)
I have also been poking around the Hershey Park website and it looks like they will also give group discounts for tickets for groups of more than 20. I'm pretty sure we'll get to 20 people. It's way too far in advance to think of tickets, but, just letting you know there is a possible group discount there as well.

Hi Michelle - it should be fun. We were going to go to Hershey anyway this summer since we aren't going on any summer vacations because of PCC 2. I figured why not see if anyone else wants to go as well. I know you're too far away to join us :sad1:

I have been looking into accomodations, and was referred to the Country Inn and Suites in Harrisburg, PA. I have heard good things about it from people who have stayed there. They have all the standard things - internet, a pool, and best of all free continental breakfast. I contacted the hotel and inquired about group rates and they informed me they would give our group a rate of $109.00/night for that weekend - we have to have a minimum of 10 rooms booked to get that rate.
Here is the website for the hotel
http://www.countryinns.com/harrisburgpa_ne
I realized that I didn't include the fact we would be doing Hershey Park - duh...
www.hersheypark.com
If anyone is interested and has any other ideas regarding other hotels/attractions/restaurants/discounts, just let me know.
So................who's in?
Andrea, Thanks for putting this together, however the dates don't work for me. :sad2: That is the weekend before School Starts here and we are always swamped that weekend. People procrastinate and wait until the last minute to get their Printing done.
I am going to Indy Meet Labor Day weekend and maybe the Chicago meet in June.

Hey Andrea! Thanks for taking the lead on this. It sounds like a ton of fun. I put it on our calendar and we will do our best to get there. A lot can change in seven months for our family, so we can't be a definate yet, but I am going to start looking forward to it! We have done the Hershey visitors center tour but not the park. This should be fun. For any shoppers, there are outlets available too.
As for accomodations...we can be flexibile for what the group is interested in. Group pricing is nice! :yay:

Hersheypark really is very nice. It's not Disney, but it is kept clean and beautiful and people love the coasters. We have season passes every year and love it! Just a bit of advice though, there are a lot more hills at Hersheypark, so bring good walking shoes!

Great idea...but just be prepared to wait in VERY LONG LINES! We live a little over an hour from HP and love HP but even the kiddie rides(ya know the little rides that go in a circle) have 30 minute plus waits in August on the weekends and the bigger rides/roller coasters can go up to 3 hours to wait! It's totally nuts! Last time we went in August Sun-Mon and it was a nightmare. My kids were so upset as they barely got to ride anything due to the waits...they kept asking "Why doesn't HP have fastpasses?"-lol! For many kids in the area it is the last weekend before they go back to school so they go then.

I'm sure we are all prepared for the lines, most people did not want to use vacation time during the week to go, since they have other vacations planned during the year, so we are going on a weekend. I'm inclined to think that rides won't be #1 priority that weekend ;).

There are a few groups rates that are of interest in addition to the first hotel that I posted about.
I narrowed our choices down to those hotels that gave a broader cancellation/booking window, and no deposit needed. I also included only those with free breakfast and internet.
Comfort Inn at the Park
Hershey, PA
This hotel is probably the closest, but more expensive - $157/night

I missed this some how. I will have my two daughters - 13 and 15 (although then basically 16) with me.

I'm leaning toward it. =) My BFF lives in Hummelstown and I asked him his views on the hotels.
The Country Inn in Harrisburg is 'much further' from the park than the other two.
His preference would be Comfort Suites. About 3 minutes from the park (5 minutes from his house.)

The two most economical choices include breakfast, and are about the same distance (6 miles) from Hershey Park:
Country Inn & Suites @ $109/night
8000 Jonestown Rd
Harrisburg, PA
or
Comfort Suites Hershey @ $129/night
320 Milroy Road
Hummelstown, PA
They are both basically the same distance from Hershey Park. I have read up on both on trip advisor and the only two things that worry me about the first hotel is that people have said that one is in more of a remote location and further away from the main strip of restaurants, and the breakfast area is very small , to the point where they were not able to sit and have breakfast in the morning. The second hotel is also very new so that is a positive.
They both do not need deposits, and reservations can be cancelled by arrival day. Doesn't matter to me which one we go to. I guess it will be put to a good old fashioned vote - unless anyone has a problem with both and don't want to stay at either one.

i am not much for group thingys. but i will tell you that the comfort inn which bills itself as at the park is a very nice property. we stayed there a couple years ago rather impromptu, we live 2 hrs away and just did not feel like driving home. also i put my 16 yr old DD, her BFF and BFF's mom up there on new years eve this year as they were doing downtown hersheys version of times square, instead of a dropping "ball" it was a rising "kiss". DD and BFF were really there cause "Honor Society" was one of the musical headliners..............dont ask..............it is actually about 2 miles from the parking lot of Hersheypark and all of the major fast and casual food chains are within a quarter mile. Hersheypark is a very clean operation. if there is one drawback it is that it is hilly. i know that sounds wierd but it is. they built the park as the land lay, it is all paved. chocolate world is adjacent to the park and is very cool and you can really stock up on your candy.

These both look good too. The Comfort Suites looks like it has a large breakfast area which might be nice and new is always good. I do think the Country Inn and Suites is in a remote area. There are not a lot of services up there by 81, at least the last time I was through there. I do love the drive from 81 into Hershey. Lots of farms.

Thanks for putting this together. I was just starting to get sad because there will no Magic Meets this summer. We are interested in attending.
Just a suggestion..last year Magic Meets did a group to Hershey. We were let into the park early and able to ride Farenheit and the Howler as many times as we wanting in an hour. I don't know if the person who organized the trip had connections, but it could be worth a try to ask.

There are usually discount tickets at Giant (local grocery store). I know the discount is much more if they are used in June instead of July or August. There are also usually coupons at Dunkin Donuts in New Jersey, but they are often not good on the weekends.
We did the preview plan last summer and it was really nice. The park is actually not very crowded in the evening and we were able to get a lot done.

Hi Anne. It would be my plan to go in Friday night for the free preview admission. But you have to buy those tickets right at the gate I believe. We'll have to see if that is somehow doable if we go the group ticket rate direction.

I'm not sure about a group discount with the free preview, but for the past few years Hershey, Giant and Kraft have been having a promo where you buy a certain amount of Kraft products at Giant and you get a voucher for a free Hersheypark ticket. We've been able to use that ticket for the free preview both years. (Hope they have that offer again this year).

I don't think we can make it, but I'll go to work on the wife. Maybe if Paul tells her to go she will listen, we love Hershey. We are going to Holiday World for our Summer Trip this year, so two trips will be tought.....anyway.
We stayed at the Homewood Suites in Harrisburg last time we went. Next to a nice mall (big Bass Pro Shop) and 8 miles from the Park. It was excellent!! Advanced price for a studeo suite is 152 and 1 bd 169. Just a little something to check out. I know with 5 in my family we need more room.

Hi everyone - I did hear from group sales at Hershey, they gave me prices for one day tickets for adults/children. They can be purchased beforehand or at the ticket window. The discount for the tickets looks pretty good to me. Problem is, a single payment must be used at the time of purchase, so, not sure how that is going to work out for us. We have plenty of time for that.
We do have a problem with the accomodations. I contacted Comfort Suites to get contract info and was told I was initially given the wrong rates- first they told me that we all had to stay over the Sunday night to get the $129/night rate, and if you didn't stay the Sunday, the rate was $189/night...
Then she told me that we could stay over any combination of nights we wanted (Fri/Sat - Sat/Sun - Fri/Sat/Sun) with no minimum # of nights, but, the price is $152.15/night. I explained that I have emails from them with the $129/night rate, but, of course they claim they never heard of the person that sent me the email...even though the email provides their first and last name and their phone number
So......now we are back to square one. Do we go with the original hotel (Country Inn) for $109/night, do we go with Comfort Suites for now $152.15/night, or she gave me another offer - The Comfort Suites Harrisburg which would be $127.49/night.http://www.comfortinn.com/hotel-harrisburg-pennsylvania-PA029?promo=gglocal
I am sooo mad that Comfort Suites isn't honoring the $129/night rate they gave me originally.

But its also looking like we probably won't be going anyway since thats the time of year that we have visitors from Houston.

http://hotelguides.com/group-reservations.html
I used hotelplanner.com first and that is where Comfort Suites emailed me with the rate that they now rescinded so I'm very leary of those sites now.
Is it ok if I come? I don't live that far from there and have been wanting to meet some fellow Dis'ers for awhile now!
Sure, all are welcome!

Who would make inappropriate remarks or get us into trouble without you there???
Thanks for the info on the hotel - I got some info and it looks like it would be about $135/night, it's another option to consider
http://homewoodsuites1.hilton.com/en_US/hw/hotel/HARHWHW-Homewood-Suites-by-Hilton-Harrisburg-West-Hershey-Area-Pennsylvania/index.do;jsessionid=BDDA875A8376B95083046B998ABE50 2B.etc51?brand_id=HW&brand_directory=/en/hw/&xch=566769024,VQS1RPUV1X0BWCSGBJC32EQ
The hotel was great, plus breakfast is included, that saves my family a lot of money per night.
It looks like that hotel is a pretty good distance from the parks. I would be tempted to go with the Comfort Suites even at the higher $$$. It gets reasonable reviews on trip advisor and seems well located.
The Homewood is 8 miles to the park and it was a quick and easy drive. Just my 2 cents, whats a couple extra miles once you are already in the car. A really good mexican restaurant in the parking lot of the hotel too :)

Just so there isn't confusion, we stayed at the Homewood Hershey East in Harrisburg. There are two apparently near each other. The one we stayed in is also the top rated on trip advisor right now.

Does anybody who's attending have teen-age kids. My grandsons are 13 and 15 and I'm considering bringing them for the weekend. (Don't worry yet Greg....I told you, they're good when they're out in publc ;) )
Hi Lois. I'll be taking my grandson son on the trip. He'll be 11.
Comfort Suites Hershey - $129/night
Hummelstown, PA
This hotel is brand new - looks nice on the website
http://www.comfortsuites.com/hotel-hummelstown-pennsylvania-PA554
Thoughts/preferences?
The two most economical choices include breakfast, and are about the same distance (6 miles) from Hershey Park:
Comfort Suites Hershey @ $129/night
320 Milroy Road
Hummelstown, PA
They both do not need deposits, and reservations can be cancelled by arrival day. Doesn't matter to me which one we go to. I guess it will be put to a good old fashioned vote - unless anyone has a problem with both and don't want to stay at either one.
Thanks George, I knew you would go with the flow.... When it's time to call to reserve rooms, I believe the group rate will be under the group of "The Dis"....how original, lol.....
I will let everyone know when you can start reserving rooms.
Even though the rate is about $25 higher per night than originally quoted, I'm still in support of the Comfort Suites in Hummelstown.
I actually went ahead and booked this morning at the AAA rate which is pretty much the same as the group rate at $152.10. I was mostly checking rates but them saw in red "only 1 room left at this rate", etc. So I just decided to book it. Probably just a ploy but I'm guessing the hotel has only so many rooms available at group rates and being prime time I didn't want to wait.
Sorry if I'm jumping the gun Andrea. If you decide to move DIS HQ hotel I can always cancel and rebook. :)

No problem at all!!!! I'm so glad you booked! The last time I spoke w/a rep from the hotel she wanted to set aside the block of hotel rooms and send me a contract at the $152/night rate and I told her I would get back to her since I wasn't sure if everyone was OK w/the new price. I'm a little bummed that the group rate isn't that great, but, I guess we aren't that big of a group, and it is a weekend in August, so.....
I didn't know you had an 11 year old grandson - that's awesome that you are bringing him!
I think I am going to go ahead and ask the hotel to send me a contract so I can look it over and see what all the particulars are, then I can have more details for everyone else.

Hi all!
This looks like so much fun.... I live about 10 miles from Hershey so my daughter and I would love to drop in.
As far as the hotels are concerned.... even though the Harrisburg Comfort Inn seems a little further....there will be a lot less traffic getting back and forth. It is right off the interstate (I 81) so finding it should be a breeze for everyone. The stretch of highway (RT 322) between the Hummelstown Comfort Inn and Hersheypark can be VERY conjested during this time of the summer. There is a Sam's Club and a Walmart very close that also drums up a lot of traffic. This is really not an opinion as to hotel choice, some some factors to consider!
Also the Giant (a local Grocery store) offers discount tickets. Traveling from the Harrisburg, Comfort Inn toward Hershey, there is a Giant on the right hand side on Route 39. From the Comfort Inn in Hummelstown, there is a Giant on Cocoa Ave in Hershey.

I don't know much about the hotels in the area since I haven't stayed in any, but I do agree that Rt. 322 can be really hectic. That's usually the way we go to Hershey and if there is a concert or anything special that weekend, it can get very congested!
I'm not sure what Hersheypark's group rates are for tickets, but I definitely suggest checking out the Giant for ticket prices. They usually have good deals. Of course, if you live close like we do, season tickets are a great deal when you get them early. If we go 3 times, they pay for themselves. :)
Since I haven't been able to go to any of the podcast cruises or meets before, I'm really looking forward to meeting some of my fellow Disers at my second favorite park (Disney World being first of course!).

Thanks for the information. The hotel we are leaning towards staying at is brand new, has a large breakfast area, and has good reviews and near restaurants so it looks like the positives may outweigh the negative of traffic. If anyone would like to stay at a different hotel, it's no problem, we'll all just meet up at the park.
There are no Giant supermarkets around here, but I have seen the discount ticket papers in Dunkin Donuts. We have some time to decide about the tickets.

I'd be inclined to not stay at the place that rescinded their offer. It'd be one thing if someone just quoted you over the phone and the hotel thought you got it wrong (which we know you wouldn't! :goodvibes) but you have it via e-mail and they should have honored it. I think the place lacks integrity and if they treat customers like that when they're just prospects, I think it only gets worse when you're locked in with an agreement - lost rezzies, etc. Doesn't show much consideration for their guests...IMVHO :rolleyes1
However, wherever you choose Andrea, will be fine with us - thx again for all your efforts on this. :goodvibes

Hi Karen
Trust me, I was annoyed, mad, ticked, upset, ect... when I found out the rate went up. I did call the hotel directly again today and I think the problem was from when I originally put in the request with hotelplanner.com and not the hotel itself. The rep at the hotel said hotelplanner sends out email offers with certain rates on it, but, the hotel itself is not putting that rate out there. The hotel rep said they are not legally responsible for the rates that hotelplanner sends out to anyone - which I still don't quite understand, but, it is what it is. The two times I've called the hotel directly they have really been nice and more than helpful in trying to set this up for me.
I requested a pre-contract, in writing, as to the rates they have quoted me for the group. They said I should get this in the mail within 5 business days, so, we'll see what happens. As of right now, the rates they have quoted me are:
8/13 $152.15
8/14 $152.15
8/15 $135.15

************GROUP HOTEL INFO***************
So, I got a hand written letter from the manager of the hotel and a contract to sign on Saturday from Comfort Suites. They apologized for the mis-information given and are giving us the rate of $142.00 per night for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I know it's not much of a decrease, but, it's something.
Of course, I got this on Saturday, and their group sales office wasn't open so I couldn't ask them any additional questions such as deposit, cancellation policy, ect... The contract states that each guest is to pay for their own room, and to secure a room they would need a credit card. It doesn't state they will be taking a deposit - that's one of the questions I want to ask them.
I do have to sign the contract and send it back to them in order to accept the rates.
Is this still OK with everyone? I don't want to sign the contract and have people not agree with the pricing, location, ammenities, ect....

Hi Anne, I did ask them that last time I spoke to them, and from what I understand the rate is good for each night - so if you only want to stay 1 or 2 nights, the rate is still $142, but when I call tomorrow I will double check on that.

I just got off the phone with Nancy of Group Sales at the Comfort Suites. To book a room, you will need to provide your credit card and tell them you are with our group. For the group name and group account number, PM me, I'm not sure I want to put that info in this post....you never know :rolleyes1
*They will NOT put any deposit on your credit card, just taking the number to hold the rate and room.
*We can book this rate up to 1 month before - at the 1 month mark, the rooms drop off the group rate and you cannot receive the discount (Plus, the longer you wait, the less of a chance there will be rooms. It is a relatively small hotel with only 80 rooms.)
*You can cancel your reservation up to 24 hours prior to check in.
*You can book any number of nights ( 1, 2, or 3) to receive the group rate. You DON'T have to stay all three nights to get the discount.
I will be signing the contract and sending it back to the hotel. No one can book at this rate until 5 days after they receive the contract.
I will let everyone know when that is.

I can't speak for anyone else, but, we're not doing the brunch. I did see it one day on the travel channel, and would love to do it some day. I looked it up on the website, and aside from being a little pricey, men have to wear jackets, and the weekend is just too short to have a dressy brunch. I am assuming most of us want a casual, less expensive weekend.

I don't think we've ever been to a Perkins!

Hi Karen! I really haven't done much lately on this meet since there really isn't anything to do yet .... I'm sure the closer we get, we will be trying to figure out more precise dates, exact meet locations, meals, ect..
I know we did the park in 1 day several years ago, so it definatley is possible to do everything in one day, and honestly since it is going to be a weekend in August it's going to be very busy with long lines so I'm not sure you'll be able to do/see everything.........however, in my opinion, the rides/attactions/shows will be secondary to the fun with friends!
I really hope you and Robert can make it!

There is a map of the park on their website if you want to get an idea of the size of the park - it's definatley not small. From what I remember, it's not like Disney as it is a lot of hills to walk up and down. When I had the stroller it was a PITA, but now everyone is old enough to walk on their own two feet!
I think we will be heading to Hershey on Friday as well. I believe that Friday is the talent show at my girls camp, and they practice all summer for it, so they would have a fit if they didn't participate in it. The talent show ends at noon, so I think we will just leave from there. It should take us about 3 hours, but, who knows.. Leaving on a Friday, in August, and having to go through the city to get to NJ, then PA, might be a bit of traffic.

I'd call myself that too, and you may have some trouble with the rollercoasters, but I know that the Great Bear has some larger seats in the center of the coaster if you are not comfortable in the normal seats. I know that you can try out the seats for Stormrunner and the Great Bear before you get in line, so that might help if you are concerned. I'm afraid I'm not much help here since I'm not a rollercoaster person though! I'm sure my DH will be looking for someone to ride with!

Thanks, Jayme. At least a couple of the rides have test seats. I will keep my fingers crossed. And I have 3 months, maybe can be less fluffy by then. I really do need to become less of me.

That talent show sounds so sweet! :cutie: We'll be getting there mid-afternoon too and may be heading over to check out Chocolate World before the preview :rolleyes1
cheers,
:flower3:

Great, if we all get there Friday by dinner time maybe we could plan on meeting somewhere for dinner. We'll have to firm up the plans when we get closer and have a better idea of people's arrival times.

I took the girls for lunch today at Burger King and they had the Hershey Park tickets out. $8/off up to four people per coupon. It's not the greatest, but it's something.
