Hide/Find a Penny Thread

Ok, the other thread is supposed to be about checking on cleaning, not a game! Let's start a dedicated thread to this topic! Anyone have suggestions for rules? After we get a general consensus then I will post them here.

Rule #1 Mark your penny! Mickey head on one side, the words "Hide Me" written in sharpie on the back. Pick out a small AREA where you will hide the penny, and post on this thread. I will keep a list of pennies on this posting.

Rule #2 After finding a penny, take a picture with it, then REHIDEor REPLACE it with a different penny in THE SAME PLACE. Pleast post when you get back your picture with the penny and when/where you found it, or if its gone.

I will update as often as possible on this first post as to the pennies status: where/when/lost :goodvibes

I haven't had any penny updates in a long time. After someone posts then I will update.

Remember, when you find the penny, rehide it where you found it!

I'll be at Disney from 1/23 - 1/29 and have already painted a Mickey head on a penny with White Out. But I'm worried that might wash off, maybe I'll redo it at home tonight using white nail polish, that shouldn't wash off in the rain. LOL

I'll take a pic of my final product before I hide it and will post to let everyone know where I hide it. If you want me to take a pic of me hiding it just let me know.

My sister is going to think I finally went off the deep end. :rotfl:

It would be a crazy coinkydink if someone dropped a pressed penny in the same location as an out of the way hidden one!:teacher: I would take that as good luck and double the fun!!:wizard:

A pressed penny from the park that the penny is hidden in would be logical. A pressed penny from your own state would be unique!

Hmmm, I think I'll leave it up to posters what kind of penny you want to leave, pressed or marked. Hopefully we'll get enough of them out there to make this a fun game :goodvibes I do agree, though, a pressed penny from someplace OTHER than WDW as in home state penny, etc, would make it more fun!

Couple of questions to help establish guidelines...
1) Are we posting where we hid the penny in the thread so anyone (DISERs of course- not just anyone) can find the penny?
2) After we find a hidden one do we put it back in the same place (in case other Disers are there at the same time) and hide our own? OR do we take the original penny and hide it somewhere new?

We are posting the AREA the penny was hid in, so there is a small amount of search involved.

I am going to attempt to use a Sharpie to mark my penny. On one side I'll do the Mickey head, on the other I'll see if Rehide at WDW will fit! That way it will serve multipurpose of HOPEFULLY not just getting pocketed if found and we will KNOW if its one our our pennies :goodvibes

That means when a post says "The eagle has landed in the phone booth near Casey's Corner" many will be looking for it but the first to find it will have already found it and taken it to another hiding place. The next to come looking won't find anything.

So...as boring as rehiding sounds, I think that is the only option. There will just be too much confusion otherwise. Unless people partner up and hide for eachother.

Good idea. I think it will be easier for me to keep track of them on here, too. So, when you find a penny, put it back! I will keep track of which ones are gone based on postings and where people have hid new pennies.

I still think we should just give a small area where it is being hid, though. That way there is still a little fun in looking for it. Not like "the penny is hid at Casey's", but more like "the penny is taped under the first table next to the window in the bleacher room."

i will be there on sunday and monday. i will decorate my penny with sharpie. on one side i will put a "hidden mickey" and on the other side i will write DIS!

i will take a pic of it and post it on here along with the location i leave it at.

when found take a pic with it. both holding it and a close up in your hand. then rehide it in a different location in the magic kingdom.

I like the find the penny replace the penny rule. I might be able to get a Pressed Penny for my state. I totally LOVE that idea. An Alabama Penny in WDW found by someone from say Tx who leaves a Texas penny for the next person. Of course the locations would have to be static or else there would be to much lag time as mentioned before.

I don't know when my next trip is, but I did want to post saying I think this is a great idea! Lots of fun!

Also, I wanted to say that you will likely find most of the pennies. We did something similar back in 2007. We went about a week and a half before our friends did. So we created a scavenger hunt for them. We bought some 'little green army men', put our initials on the bottom and hide them all over. We made sure to do 'out of the way' type places. Our friends had a blast looking for them (we gave them the basic locations). We hid about 18 men and they found a good 10-12 of them!I have a few pictures- if anyone is interested, let me know.

At Casey's Corner there is a time board where they have the times of the rides I will hide one on top there on friday. Then on Saturday I will hide one at the pay phone next to the first aid also by Casey's Corner. Let me know when and if you find them..This should be fun.

I am in! Im gonig April 7-11 and can hide and would love to find as well. However I have a suggestion, we should make a limitation to this game as in how many can be hidden. Im thinking like one per land/MK, one per ride/FW and country/WS etc. Otherwise all you gung-ho DISers are going to hide hundreds and then it will kind of take the fun out of it. If there was a limited list I would be more inclined to paly as opposed to spending my whole trip finding hidden pennies.

I agree about not having tons and tons of pennies everyplace. The issue I see without not hiding enough, however, is that some will disappear and no guarantees they will be replaced. Nothing says anyone has to look for all the pennies. I would suggest just writing a few down and looking for which ones you want :goodvibes

Depends on where it's done I suppose.

In front of the Rose and Crown in Epcot's WS, CMs are usually putting down a game of hop-scotch in chalk and writing a greeting on the ground, too.

Just have to find a place rather visible without a lot of foot traffic.

I have been doing this for a couple of years. The penny I hid in AK was there in October, I believe I hid it in Spring of 08 so that is a good 18 months. I hid one in MK that was there for about 3 months but was gone after my trip 6 months later. I hid one near Pirates in October that I plan to look for on Saturday. My DS and Epcot pennies have never remained from trip to trip, I need to find better spots.

2) Another option would be to NOT post locations publicly. Rather, people could use this board to post their willingness to participate. Then, someone else could PM them and say that they are going to hide the pennies and give locations. The whole thing would be between those two people. Whenever you go to Disney, you would find someone here to hide pennies for you, and then you'd respond to someone else's request and you would hide for them.

We did this for years, and they were always gone-BUT it was at least 6 months between visits, so you have a much better chance of success. A lot of ours were in a ride que. Suspect they must come through with strong "leaf blower" type things because they were really hidden well and high up. Good luck-sounds fun.

Correct. Otherwise there is too much of a lag in between when people may find/move them and when they get home from vacation to post. Then we'll have other people looking who are there that also don't have computer access looking for moved pennies.

I'm hopping over from the original post and I'm trying to follow what this has turned into. :lmao: So there will be some hidden? When we find them we don't move them? We can hide pennies anywhere in MK and report back where we have hidden them? Do I have it right??

How fun! We're not going until July, but hopefully this is still going and we can play. DH will think it's dumb, but DD will enjoy it!

I'm hoping it will continue, too, since we are going back with the kids in October 2011 and they will want to play :yay:

Hello! I'm back from my trip and noticed that the penny I hid isn't on the list. I hid it on Monday, January 25th in Epcot...

Walking back from the Seas, near the gardens by the water... close to Innoventions.

I have a couple of pictures I took, I'll post them tonight, I didn't have a chance to do it this weekend.

I looked for the penny near the UK phone booth while I was in Epcot, but I couldn't find it. My sister was digging around the phone booth and I was getting grossed out because they were kinda dirty. LOL So I made her stop. LOL

Its in one of the towers in the fort on Tom Sawyer's Island. When you get to the entrance of the fort, its the far left tower. Go up all the way, and on the ledge away from the guns are some decorations. There is a stack of 3 books, my penny is hidden on top of the second book!

MareSINY was kind enough to hide a penny for my daughter while she was there. On jan 31st we sat out on our adventure to Animal Kingdom. MareSINY told us her penny would be located in a rock by the ITTBAB fast pass machines by the lemurs. So that was the first place we went and what do you know it was still there and not very hard to find. Here are some pics of my daughter making her discovery.

And I hid some more pennies. Wow its hard to remember to hide them and to look for them! Anyhow, here are what I hid. I updated the first page also.

Penny #13 DHS-On RnR in Recording Room C. There is the silver fence in the front to keep you from getting too close to the screen. In the one closest to the exit door there is a little space at the bottom of the post. Its a square. I dropped it in there. I did check 3 days later and it was still there.

Penny #14 DHS-In ToT. Right before you go in the library doors there is a female bust. Check in the crook of the back of her left arm.

Penny #15 DHS-In ToT. In the library kiddie corner to the tv there is an old fashioned phone. Check in the little space under the back of the handle. This penny was there 3 days later also!

Penny #16 MK-On Tom Sawyer's Island. At the second boat dock on the island that isn't used very often. There is an area right next to the stairs with some stuff by the post for the roof. Check where the axle goes in the wooden wheel. Its a little high up.

I'm taking my 9 year old niece (I surprised her with the news of our trip on her birthday this past weekend) from April 15 - April 18th. We are planning to hit each park at least once. LOL

I'll take the list of pennies that have been hidden and see if we can find any, and I'll hide a few while I'm there!

If anyone would like to have me hide a personal penny for them let me know and I'll get that done for you while I'm there as well. I did that for someone on my last trip and the penny was found! I think my niece will get a big kick out of the hidden penny searches. :)

I just told my niece Brianna about the hide/find a penny hunt and she's all for it. She decorated 5 pennies for me and she wanted to know if anyone could hide a penny for her. I know it's short notice, and I told her the chances of anyone reading this who will be there before we are (we arrive Thursday and are leaving Sunday) are slim to none. What a tiring weekend! I'm back and I didn't have as much time for penny hunting as I thought I would!! I did check for the penny by the lemur sign in Animal Kingdom, but we didn't find it, so that one might be gone.

We did hide a penny in the rock near the Lemur sign (it's behind the FP machines near ITTBAB). That one is for Piper. :) I got a couple of pics of this on my camera, I'll post them when I get unpacked.

The other penny we hid was in Epcot for Chloe's birthday. I really hope this one will still be there, we weren't able to take any pics because I forgot my camera at the hotel that night and by the time we reached the place where I hid it the two of us were so exhausted that we didn't even think to use my cell phone to snap a pic. We hid the penny in Canada, across from the stairs that lead to Le Celier and the gardens there's a wall along the water. We hid the penny on the backside of one of the pillars, closest to the water side. I can't think of a better description...

Traveling alone with a 9 year old who is in constant motion is enough to make an adult drop. I really had planned to hide more pennies but there just wasn't enough time in the day to do everything we wanted to do.

Unfortunately I will be there the same time as you, so there will be no way for you to know where the pennies will be that I hid. There is a list on the front page of the thread- not sure which ones are still there.

Was there last month but forgot the list, lol. I did hide a penney on the riverboat in MK. It's on the lower level in the little room with the sitting area. It's behind the curtain on the window. Wanted to see if it was still there when we go back.

I'll be heading back on 11/18 with my 7 year old niece. I can look for some of the previously hidden pennies, though I doubt they will still be around. I can also hide a couple while we are there.

We'll be there from 11/18 - 11/21, staying at AKL and hitting all 4 parks. If anyone would like us to hide a penny for you or your kids please let me know via PM and we'll work something out. I did this for someone in January and it was found. :)
