I need to lose weight.
It’s as simple as that.
I have struggled my entire life with maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As I prepare to turn thirty-six in March, I realize I seriously need to get this under control. Health issues are not something that I want to be dealing with as the years add up – and Diabetes is a real threat for me if I don’t do something about it NOW.
Sometimes, we all need a good, swift kick in the rear to get us moving, right? Well, such a kick came in the form of a challenge to myself. Want to know what I did to ensure that I would end this year at a healthy weight and in the best shape of my life?
I didn’t start off s-l-o-w-l-y.
I didn’t give myself baby steps to reach my goal.
I decided that I needed something REALLY BIG to motivate me. :rolleyes1
Just moments ago, I registered for the Disney Half Marathon on January 8, 2011.
*gulp*
Oh, my gosh. I can’t believe I did that. Seriously?? What was I thinking?! I am 40 pounds overweight and have never really done any sort of running that didn’t include many breaks, huge gasps for air, and feeling like I was dying. What the heck have I gotten myself into?? :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:
*deep breaths*
I know I can do this.
I know I can do this.
I know I can do this.

This magical journey of mine -- and it truly needs to be full of Disney magic in order for me to reach my goal -- is just beginning. No training has begun. No plans have been made. In fact, I haven’t even talked to my husband about this crazy idea of mine. :rolleyes1
I will need all of the help and support I can get throughout the next year so I hope all of my DIS friends, old and new, will come along for the ride. :grouphug: As I always do, there will be links at the bottom of this post to take you to each installment so that you can skip the chit chat if you prefer.

:welcome: Congrats on the big achievement! :worship: I lost 20 pounds a few years ago just from walking an hour every day and making healthier choices, but then fell off the wagon. Do you mind sharing how you did it?
I see you've stayed at Fort Wildnerness many times. It's my dream to stay there some day - either in the cabins or camping.
I also see you're a Yankees fan. So, we won't be talking baseball. :rolleyes1

Dare I even ask what you favorite baseball team is?
Fort Wilderness is great, but we've had to get away the past few trips. It's very relaxing and it finally got to the point of being too relaxing (if that's possible):lmao: We've done both there and I prefer the cabins myself. Camping is nice, but the cains there are really nice and I prefer them for a longer (week+) vacation.
My calorie intake for the day is usually around 1500 calories and I walk 2 miles everyday. Not much else I do, just started to eat less and exercise. No fancy dieting plan here:thumbsup2

The Sox, of course! ;) I was born and raised in Maine so I'm a new england fan all the way. I used to be crazy obsessed with baseball in my teen years, but football is now my favorite sport.

I'm sure we'd love the cabins, too. There's just such a huge price difference between the cabins and camping!

That's definitely the way to go! That's how I did it when I lost my 20 pounds. I did try to eat more vegetables and stay away from the bad carbs - more whole grains, etc. I don't do well sticking to anything that is too strict so exercise is the key for me.

First off, I need to post a photo. While my reports are always filled with tons of pictures, you won't see too many body shots of me. :rolleyes1 However, I feel it's necessary to the challenge to post one here. An "after" picture isn't worth much if there is no "before", correct? :thumbsup2
My husband is active duty navy and is currently stationed on a ship. This picture was taken just a few weeks ago -- the day before his ship left for a deployment to the gulf.
http://i703.photobucket.com/albums/ww34/willtravelbyfoot/meandchuckfordis-1.jpg
And to make it official, I heard back (via email) from my husband last night. He 100% supports my decision to do this. I knew he'd be supportive, but his email was so wonderfully encouraging! I really do have the best husband.
Before I go on, I should probably tell you a little bit about myself, for those of you who don't know me. My name is Carissa, I'm 35, and a stay-at-home/homeschooling mom to our three boys ages 9, 7, and 5. I was born and raised in Maine, spent six of my adult years in Maryland, and was lucky enough to live in Australia for three years. My passions are the Patriots, reading, travel, and WDW. Okay - that should be enough to get us started. ;)
I first heard about Disney's half marathon from my friend, Liz. She brought up the idea to me a couple of years ago and it's been on my mind ever since. I am proud to say she completed her first half marathon this month after just starting to train last February! Her good friend, Jenny, did the half with her and has started a trip report about their weekend. Check it out!
Mrs. Darling's 2010 Half Marathon Trip: Yes, it does snow at Disney World (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2371909)
And, now - on to The Plan! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:
Even though I've set a monstrous goal for myself, I do have some baby steps in mind to help me reach that goal. :teacher:
• Start and finish the Couch-to-5K (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml) program
• Make healthier food choices, increase fruits and vegetables, and decrease portion sizes
• Once my husband returns home, set up a routine to begin training outdoors
• Register for and run in Race for the Cure (http://globalrace.info-komen.org/site/PageServer?pagename=hq_gr_homepage) being held in October
• Lose at least 30 pounds by the end of the year
• Reward myself with Disney trip planning
I'm sure as I go along, my mini-goals and baby steps will become more specific. Right now, I have my sights set on the first two baby steps. My plan is to begin C25K on Monday, January 25th. I am still recovering from a cold and want to make sure I am 100% ready when I start.
** For anyone interested in starting the program, there are some free podcasts available on iTunes to help you. Or you can get them here (http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/podcasts/podcasts.html). I downloaded the set by Robert Ullrey. He has set up the program for each week with music and telling you when to start jogging and when to walk, etc.

:welcome: Christine! Thanks for stopping by. :) I still can't believe that I've done/am doing this! Life is too short to spend it dreaming and I decided I need to make things happen. My body isn't going to get healthy with me sitting on the couch reading a book or sitting at the computer. I might hate myself by the end of this, but I have a feeling I will love myself.
And add all of the popcorn smileys you'd like! popcorn:: popcorn:: popcorn:: Popcorn is a pretty healthy snack - minus all of the butter. I pop my own in a brown lunchbag in the microwave. Sometimes I add a small amount of oil afterwards and some salt and sometimes I eat it plain. :thumbsup2

I am a 40+ old woman who has lost 35 pounds since July, and still needs to shed 20 more...I began running toward the end of my weight loss, to help with calorie burn. I have been seriously thinking about a 1/2 marathon for a while, and reading your posts have been the final push.....I'm going over to Disney's website to register NOW!

You are to be commended for your goals, and it will be fun to follow along as you reach them. With my knee trouble, running is out of the question, but I do love walking whenever I can. I hope next January is kinder to the WDW runners than this year was. It was kind of crazy down there this year!
It was good to see the family again.
Best of everything to you as you look ahead to January!

Hey Amy! Thanks for coming over. I did stop by your PTR, too!
:woohoo::woohoo::yay::yay::dance3::dance3::cheer2: :cheer2:
What is going on here?! How exciting is this news! I can't wait for you to get started and hear all about the ups and downs. (And trust me. There will be both.) And we will actually get to meet next January at Marathon Weekend:cool1: In case you can't tell, I'm really excited for you Carissa;)
PS Thanks for the trip report shout out.
Thanks Jenny! It'll be wonderful to finally "meet" in person. :goodvibes
:wave2: Hi Carissa! Well, you have officially inspired me!
Oh my goodness. You seriously have me choked up right now!! (Doesn't take much these days.) I'm so glad that my starting this PTR has helped give you that push you needed. Good for you!! I hope you'll share your journey with all of us, too.
I knew you had come back to the DIS to read and catch up, but I didn't know you had come back to show us all up!
Thanks so much, MeMom! I can't tell you how excited I am to have a trip in the works!! That in itself was a huge motivating factor for me deciding to do this. ;)
That's a great picture of you and Chuck! I bet he's really excited for you about this whole thing. :goodvibes
Thanks for the kudos on my half! I still can't quite believe I did it. Seemed like a dream a year ago... Maybe like how you are feeling right now. Dreams do come true!! :cloud9:
Next Monday (I assume you meant the 25th?), the day you begin a new journey!! woohoo!!
Oh yeah. My brain was a bit foggy this morning from the cold medicine I took last night. :rolleyes1 I'll go change it.
That's awesome Michelle!!! Carissa, you are already inspiring others too! It's contagious!!! How wonderful!
I think it's wonderful!! And it makes me feel so good. :goodvibes

Awesome - I'll go check those out a little later. Busy day here today and we haven't even started our school work.

I'm pretty big into football and baseball. It all depends on what time of year:thumbsup2 Patriots' fan, uh? Well that's ok because I'll even admitt that Tom Brady is a hottie and my Giants beat you guys in super bowl 42:cheer2:
Camping is definetely a lot cheaper:laughing: I'm just not the camping type myself. I can handle it for 2 or 3 nights, but past that I start to miss certain things. Even if I'm in a luxary RV I still start to miss things:laughing:
My biggest problem lately is I snack way too much. I've discovered once I stop snacking in the day I eat way less len 1000 calories:eek: So I've been starting to eat more at meals and eat fruit once in a while when I'm hungry:thumbsup2
Very cool that you lived in Austrailia! It is my dream to visit there someday, but right now the money is a problem:laughing: When is money not a problem?

Hi Carissa! WOW...YOU GO GIRL!!! I am so happy for you that you have taken on this AMAZING challenge! Back in 2005 my husband, sister and I all ran the Marine Corp Marathon for the charity "Organization for Autistic Research" It was the most difficult thing I have EVER done in my life BUT it was also the most rewarding. The training can be arduous at times but know that you can vent/chat about it here and we will all keep encouraging you! You seem to have a very realistic approach which is KEY! I will share some things I wish I had done differently after I had time to reflect on the experience!
1. If you want to lose weight, I would try to lose as much as you can BEFORE you start your really long/hard training. Once you start that, your body will need more calories to replace what is being burned to prevent sickness/injury. While training, I lost only 4 pounds.
2. Do some strength training for your legs, they will take a beating when running. If you consistantly do some low weight high rep. leg work it will help tremendously, especially towards the end of the 1/2 marathon when you have depleted your energy...you will be STRONGER!
3. Sounds silly but once you really get into your training, practice drinking water or whatever energy replacement you will use during the race, during your training runs...it will limit your time that you have to stop and prevent cramping!
4. LISTEN to your body, remember this is a process, if you feel like you need more rest/recovery TAKE IT! This will go a long way to prevent injury too!
I am sorry if these tips seem scary, I just wish someone had thought to tell me these things before my race!
Good Luck, I'll be rooting for you!:goodvibes

I don't think so as I have been able to do it before it is just a recent problem (last two weeks). :confused3 Hopefully it is just due to my sloth like behaviour over the Christmas holidays and it will disappear once my body gets back into a routine. I am hitting the school gym with my friends on Monday during our four hour break, exercise IN PUBLIC! :scared1:

I know how hard that can be! When I was living in Australia, a friend dragged me to some classes at a gym. I hated it. I felt so self-conscious - especially when I was at the way back of the class and the instructor was way up front (a man) and he was coaching me on my push-ups. @@
I'm glad I'm going to start running on a treadmill where no one can see my bad form. ;)
When you were talking about 15 minutes on the treadmill, were you talking about jogging/running straight for 15 minutes?

Are you eating or drinking large amount right before your workout? I find that my stomach does better if I don't eat anything for at least an hour before I go run. You're probably right though that it is just your body getting over the laziness and gluttony that we all call the Christmas Holidays. I know I have to get over them every January;)

No I do a modification of the C25K, a run/walk combo so it ends up being about half walking half running.

Nope I always make sure to drink the water an hour ahead of time to make sure that my body is actually hydrated and I save eating until afterwards when my metabolism is kicked into gear. Hopefully by next week I can get through my workouts with the cramping. Yoga is great and all but it doesn't really burn the calories the way that running on the treadmill does.

So, I was really excited and inspired last night after reading Liz's journey on the C25K program. I was ready to start and didn't want to wait until Monday. But, I didn't want to say anything to anyone in case I chickened out or failed.
I've decided that for each day of the program I complete (or attempt), I will post a little journal entry here. Like this:
~ Week 1 Day 1 ~
Well, I did it! I woke up this morning after too little sleep. I've had a hard time drifting off to dream land the past two nights due to the excitement of this challenge. However, I still felt pretty good. I ate a small bowl of oatmeal with a little bit of peanut butter mixed in and drank plenty of water. After letting everything settle for a bit, it was time to tackle my first day of the program.
One thing that surprised me is that I immediately did my brisk warm up walk at a speed of 3.5. Normally, that is my faster interval speed. I've read so many people say how running is such a mental challenge and I can see that already. 3.5 was totally doable for me.
The first interval of jogging I tried at 4.5. I handled it okay except that I immediately started feeling discomfort/pain in my lower shins and the top of the inner part of my foot (draw a line from my big toe to my ankle and that's the area I mean). Now, this didn't surprise me as I've always had this pain anytime I've tried jogging/running in the past.
I decided to slow down the pace to 4.0 on the next interval. It felt really slow, but I had read others say the best way to keep shin splints away was to go slower. I'm not trying to win a race right now and I know the faster speed will come later, once I build up my endurance.
The pain/discomfort I felt immediately lessened every time I went back to walking. I just think my stumpy legs and monster feet have a LOT of weight to support right now and maybe that's part of the problem. I wonder if this kind of pain is normal in the beginning for most people? It's not something I can't deal with, but I do worry that it will get worse if I do get shin splints.
It's funny that by the end of the workout, 3.5 seemed pretty slow to me. :rotfl: I am so proud to say that I completed day 1 and without too much difficulty. Yes, I was breathing hard and yes, those last couple of jogs were difficult to finish. But, I DID IT!! :cool1: I was surprised that I didn't struggle as much with the cardio aspect of the workout. But, then again, I was only going at a speed of 4.0.
My totals for today:
Speed: 3.5 for warm up, 4.0 for jogs, 3.0 - 2.5 for cool down
Duration: 30 minutes total
Distance: 1.75 miles

:cheer2: Go Carissa! That is awesome! As far as aches and pains that is just a part of running as your body figures things out. However, it is always good to listen to your body if the pains start to be more severe. After you've been running for a while you'll know what is normal and what isn't. That is when it's really important to listen. I also find that the first mile or so of any run it always the toughest. (Believe it or not mile 1 is tougher than mile 10.) That sounds strange, but it just takes a while to get warmed up. Great job! Can't wait to hear about your progress.:thumbsup2
Oh yeah! Liz is a running machine. Don't get discouraged if it's a bit harder for you.

:welcome: Tess! Thanks for coming over! I bought the 587s, here (http://www.zappos.com/new-balance-w587-white-navy). My current pair is the 844, but I don't even see those on their site (I bought them at a New Balance store). I love the look of the 1011s! The 587s look so boring. :rotfl: We'll see how they work for me (and yes, I've been told I'm flat-footed too). Did you find you had pain on the top of your foot when you started jogging/running? I'm thinking maybe it's because of the pronating since it's on the top/inner part of my foot. I feel fine right now, but I imagine tomorrow I'll be very sore in that area.

To continue on with the over-pronate conversation, after doing some research, I really do think that's the reason for the type of pain I have when I run. And I looked up the current pair of sneakers I have and they are classified as "walking" shoes. They are supposed to help with pronation stability, but I think the new ones are better in that regard (not to mention - new!).
Tess - do you use any inserts in your sneakers?

I haven't experienced any pain in my feet but I do know that is sometimes caused by the way the shoe is laced. My husband is a Soldier and a serious runner so running is always an ongoing topic in our home. Many moons ago I was in the Army and I despised running! I didn't know anything about proper form or shoes or how to breathe-run-and call cadence at the same time. I just did it because they made me!:headache: Years (and 30lbs) later I feel born again!:worship: What a difference life experience and a good pair of shoes make. Unfortunately my amazing ability to make whole footprints at pool parties translates into ugly, remedial looking running shoes!:lmao: DH's shoes all look sleek and cool, mine not so much.

I don't use any inserts. Because my feet are flat and widen when I stand up, walk, run, etc... I usually buy a wide width in "athletic shoes." However, the NB "B" (Standard) width fits me like a glove. I have tried many different motion control running shoes (Asics, Brooks, NB) and the NB 1011 is by far the perfect runner for MY feet. I have two pair that I rotate and I'm always on the lookout for a sale. I also have a pair of Asics Gel-Evolutions that I like but they don't have as much support and need inserts. But I wear the Asics as my everyday sneaks and only use the 1011s for running. "Running" by the way is a rather lofty term for what I do, it's more of a fast jog/plod!:lmao:

I'm seriously thinking about ordering a pair of the 1011s and then seeing which ones I like more. That website seems to have a good return policy and I won't be trying them outdoors. I think if I'm going to actually do this half marathon, I have to find a pair of shoes that will correct my problem. Otherwise, I'm afraid I'll be dealing with this issue forever.

(if you want to read anything, read the completed trip report on '08 -my first half - I'll post hopefully this weekend my 2nd Half experience.... think of it as "winning ugly" )
WISH boards are starting up again, and its such a great group to cheer you on - and then to meet up with on the Friday before the race - at the race its nice to "hang" with people... that "get it" and the Monday after the race at Boardwalk, such a sigh of relief its over, but to be able to trade the "war stories" with people - its a GREAT thing!!
:cheer2: GO CARISSA GO CARISSA!!! GO GO GO!! YOU can DO THIS!! :cheer2:

I've been thinking...
What if I made this trip not only a half-marathon adventure, but also a couple's only getaway??
Chuck and I have been married ten years. In fact, we celebrated our 10th anniversary last May. We had talked about doing something big - going away on a romantic trip. But, we ended up taking a family trip to Disney in March/April and the money for anything else went out the window. We ended up celebrating our big 1-0 at home. And we were perfectly content with that.
The last time Chuck and I had a night away alone together was when our oldest was a baby - over nine years ago. Over the past nine years, we have occassionally gone out on a date (maybe 10 - 15 times total). We've never lived close to our families, so finding a babysitter has always been difficult (and expensive).
Like most marriages, ours has had its ups and downs. Right now, we're in a really good place (well, as good as it can be with him being away from home). I would love to celebrate that and build on it with some time away - just the two of us. What more magical place could there be to do that than Walt Disney World?
But, how do you tell your three children, who are constantly begging to go back to WDW, that you're leaving them behind for a trip to their favorite place?? :confused3
Seriously - I'm asking. How do we do that??

Maybe "brag" wasn't the right word. It just motivated me to know that I could come here and say that I did it and people would be happy for me. :)

I'll figure it out! :rotfl: And I'll definitely read your TR for your completed half. Right now I'm trying to read all I can to prepare as I have no idea what to expect.

Actually, this is a PTR that I just started. I'm planning on running the half in 2011! :goodvibes

I was so excited to see your report I didn't even notice it was for next year's marathon, lol.
Congrats ! It's going to be great fun ! I would love to start participating in them also ~ Trevon ran the 5K ~ his first race ever last October in the Twilight Zone Terror of Terror 5K and he LOVED it! He's now addicted and is running in the ESPN 5K next month and the Halloween MK 5K in Oct.
It's more fun than I could have ever imagined a race would be ~ of course :rotfl: 'cause it's in WDW :wizard:

I think one of the best gifts you can give your kids is two parents who love each other. If your kids see that mom and dad enjoy spending time together and truly care about the other's welfare, then it can only be a positive influence on their lives!
I've said to my DDs before that I hope when they're older, that they can say that their parents gave them an example of a loving, Christian marriage.

Hi Carissa! :wave2:
First off, I just want to say, "Good for you!!" :cheer2:
You may recall that way back I wrote about Ed's first attempt at a half marathon (and my first 5K) at WDW. I had the same misgivings as you do about telling Tricia and Billy about our couple-only-weekend. In the end, we just sat down with them and told them that we were going. It was as simple and direct as that. I was surprised that they took it so well.
You've got great kids; I'm sure that they will take it just as well.

So I don't know if this would work with your kids, but here is what works with mine. I tell them I'm going to run my race. That's it. I've done it twice now. (Well the first time DH and I went to Disneyland.) I tell them races at Disney are totally different from our family trips (and they are). And I promise to bring them back something. They always get excited about my races and they love when I bring back the medals. My DS7 asked me the other day if he could have a Donald if I run another one. DS5 replies, "No. You have to earn it!" All the kids have asked me if I'll do the half marathon with them when they are old enough. (Of course I say yes, but I'm sure they will leave their old lady mama in the dust.) Anyway, when I make the trip about the race instead of about Disney World they have always been really excited for me. It really is quite fun. I have my own little fan club that always wants to know how far I ran when I get home.

ITA - it has to be a couples only trip! In '08 we went w/o dd, we have a great support system, so no worries there - but we did feel somewhat guilty while there (check out the report ;) )
so we decided to forego a family vacation in '09 and go for a long week in '10 - I dont think it was such a great idea! DD was incredulous when we didnt go to MK on arrival day (it helped her overcome her fear of flying to imagine going on just 3 rides when we got to Disney) there just wasnt time - we had to get our packets!! Then we had to go to the Pop meet.... then we had to get up at 2am.... and when I came back from the Half - I wanted a bed. No way was I moving... repeat that on Sunday for DH!!
Its hard to be a "Mom" at Disney - when the focus HAS to be on you - on YOUR race - mentally a Half Marathon is a challenge, and you WANT to face that challenge, and focus.... dont divide yourself!!
Do something special the weekend before with the kids - make where ever they are going to stay special... maybe go to the dollar store and wrap up something for each day you are gone -

I agree. When our kids were younger, I thought our marriage would be okay with us focusing our attention on the children in the early years. There would be time for us later. I realize now that was a mistake. But, we've worked through our problems and we both really want some special time to ourselves.

Hey Kathy! Actually, I just read through that TR of yours last night! I had never read it before. It was really helpful in giving me an idea of what to expect and I got some great ideas for a special trip with just Chuck. :thumbsup2

I think that's a good plan. And it's not like they haven't been to WDW three times in the past 3 years! I do plan on telling them we'll bring stuff back for them and that we will take them back - probably after Chuck retires from the navy. The plan is to ask my parents to come down and stay with them so that too might help lessen the blow (they love being with Memere and Pepere).
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm feeling pretty good today. My left ankle is a bit sore and I'm a bit sore on my upper legs - not really my thighs. Kind of on the outside. Hard to explain, but it's in an area I'm not used to. Not a bad thing. :thumbsup2
I plan on my off days from the program to do some wii fit/sports (I love the boxing), but I'm going to take it easy today.

I think making it a couples trip is a great idea. Chuck is away from home so much and it doesn't sound like you get much alone time when he is home. I think a trip just the two of you will be relaxing for you both and great for your marriage.
I'm sure the boys would understand or you could just fib a bit and not tell them you will be in WDW. Just tell them you are going on a trip to run a 5K and leave out the WDW part or tell them you are going away to the beach or something. ;)

It's hard not to get wrapped up in our kid's lives, afterall we love them so much. When they are younger, their needs are so great, they seem to get most our attention.
As much as I love and cherish my children, I've tried to remember that one day that they will grow up, move out, marry and begin their own family (and that day keeps getting closer and closer!) . Then it will just be me and DH alone, again. We better still like each other and enjoy spending time together!
A good marriage doesn't just happen, it takes work.....glad to hear you've worked through your problems. :thumbsup2

I can't believe it! I ordered a pair of the NB 1011s yesterday and they just arrived!!!! I ordered from Zappos and it didn't even cost me a dime to ship. Wow. The weird thing is the other pair I ordered the day before that and haven't arrived yet.
Anyway, they're on my feet as I type. :woohoo: When I first put them on I thought they fit like a glove. I couldn't believe how good they felt. And then as I walked around I could feel the inner support for the over-pronation rubbing my foot. Not sure if it feels right or if I should get a wider shoe. Also hoping a 10 is big enough. We'll see how they go when I "run" tomorrow.

I believe, strongly, in couple time. Date nights, date trips.
Not at the expense of the children of course but balance is really important and the family is only as strong as the couple.
Will the kids love it? No, probably not as it will be very new to them as a concept. We typically take 1 "date" trip a year and then 2 family ones. Sometimes they are short, sometimes long, sometimes big, sometimes small but the idea is balance. By showing our kids they get equal, or more "trip" or vacation time, it works out ok.
For a race like this, couple time aside, you would not be able to give your kids the kind of Disney trip they want and that wouldn't be fair to anyone. They will forgive you and as adults, remember that you made time for each other, as well as for them. To me that is a gift (by way of example) that we can give our kids.
I  zappos!

This is such a great thing to do for yourself.
I find that when I buy sneakers I have to go up a size ( I wear a size 11, so that means going up to a 12). I think sneakers just run small in general, at least in my experience.

I think the kids would be completely fine with us leaving them with my parents - no doubt. It's just the Disney part that I think will be difficult for them to handle. But, I think adding in the fact that we'll be busy with races and stuff and wouldn't have time to do the fun things they like might help to lessen the sting.

Hey Leslie! :)
I know I've read people say you should get running sneakers 1/2 size larger, but 10s are usually pretty roomy on me so I thought I'd be okay. My old sneakers are a 10 and plenty big. But, these have more support and are stiffer. We'll see. They feel pretty good right now.

Carissa - do you have a running store near you? Can you google to find out?
I also have a pronating, large foot - and I used to buy my running shoes here and there - until I decided to run the Half, and was going to put some serious time in - then I took the advice of other runners and went to a running store - HUGE difference! (I'm not sure where my shoes are hiding right now... I'm thinking they are NB in the 1000 series!)
I also bought an insert for my pronating foot (and all I can remember is its orange! they were at the expo and I thought I needed a new pair - the salesman took a look said they were worn at the top, but were just fine where the support was!! so I didnt need to buy a new pair!)

I have a relative who is a sports trainer (has his masters) and he looked at my feet and shoes a couple of years ago. Since my husband is gone on deployment, and we homeschool (meaning no time without the kids), the thought of taking them with me to a running store and trying to talk to someone gives me nightmares. :rotfl: Ordering them online will have to do for now. I can always check one out once my husband gets back this summer. :thumbsup2

Do it!!! You need a vacation for just the 2 of you. I promise that your boys won't be emotionaly scarred.
I think kids need to see that the marriage is the most important relationship in the family....one day the kids will be grown and on their own. If you haven't cultivated your relationship with your spouse....well, that doesn't usually end up very well.
I have a quote on my wall that says " the most important gift a father can give to his children, is to love their mother".
I know getting time away can be hard. When our kids were little and we couldn't afford a babysitter very often, we would play card games or watch a movie after the kid were in bed.
When my oldest turned 12 we started letting him babysit while we go on our date night...after 4 years it's a normal thing for us to have a date every week. Of course, it doesn't always happen, but we try and the kids respect that as non-negotiable.
Book the trip!! You deserve some time alone together! Your boys may complain, but I promise you, they will get over it!

On the shoes...as you know I've got the big feet too. My running shoes are size 10's, but I am going to try on size 10.5's next time. I have issues with my toes hitting the fronts of my shoes. I didn't realize that I would need THAT much extra room up front there (when running), but I do. You may not have an issue with that though.

We have decided to try and do the couple only trip. The two variables will be if my parents can come watch them and if Chuck can get the time off and isn't deployed. The ship is supposed to be in dry docks for a while after this deployment to get work done so we should be good in that regard.
Sully turns 10 this year so not too much longer until we have a babysitter. :thumbsup2 I know he will be more than happy to do it as he likes responsibility. And we'll pay him, too which will make him happy.

A few things before I post my journal entry for today. Chuck has said he is interested in running the 5K at WDW that weekend. :cool1: I'll be talking to my parents tomorrow and seeing if they're willing to come down and watch the boys for us.
I took out a great book from the library yesterday and I'm already halfway through. It's called Running for Mortals by John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield. I'm sure many of you already know about it and/or have read it. If you haven't and are interested in running or just took up running but haven't read anything on the subject, I highly recommend it. It's a quick, easy read and offers some really good information to help you understand your body with regards to running. I think the most interesting thing for me was learning that the heart and lungs adapt much quicker than the muscles and much, much quicker than the joints.
Okay - now on with today...
~ Week 1 Day 2 ~
I was really excited for my "run" today. I had my new sneakers and was eager to see if I could still do it or if Thursday was a fluke. :rolleyes1 Once again I ate a small bowl of oatmeal, mixed with some yogurt and drank a good amount of water from the time I woke up until I began the run. Maybe a full glassful. I also changed my warm up to start a little more slowly. But, to make up for that, I kept my cool down at 3.5 for a few minutes before slowing down.
Again, the cardio part of the runs were much better than I had anticipated. I'm not saying I find them easy, fun, or that I don't get winded or sweat. But, I can remember years past whenever I'd try to jog, I would be DYING. I think I've underestimated my level of fitness. The last few years I have walked quite a bit. Not always consistently, but enough to increase my aerobic abilities. That in itself has been empowering for me to discover.
However, the pain in the tops of my feet, ankles, and shins was worse today. I don't think pain is the right word to be using. It's not a stabbing kind of pain. It's more like a fatigue pain. You know when you're doing reps for bicep curls or something similar and you start to feel a burn? That's what I'm experiencing. I'm hoping that it's simply from lack of use and over time, those areas will strengthen and the pain will go away. I think it was worse today because those areas were still a bit tired from Thursday. It did start to lessen towards the end of the run as everything really warmed up.
I had no problems with cramps or stitches in my side. :thumbsup2 And my new sneakers felt good.
Sundays will be my complete rest day normally and I won't be doing Day 3 of the program until Tuesday. I'm hoping that will help give my feet/ankles/shins time to heal. Monday will be some boxing, strengthing and yoga.
This is how my plan looks right now (I know it looks a bit odd because I started on a Thursday):
Monday: Easy walk on treadmill for 10 minutes, boxing for cardio, wii fit plus for yoga and strengthening exercises
Tuesday: Day 3

:cheer2: Great job Carissa! The books by Bingham and Hadfield are great for us normal people! I ran my first half marathon using their training program in Marathoning for Mortals which I highly recommend. So check that book out when you get a chance!
The aches and pains are probably just your body adjusting. That is a good sign that it felt better towards the end of your workout. Like I said earlier the first mile is always the toughest for me. I love hearing about your progress!

I'm definitely planning on requesting that one from the library. They didn't have it on their shelf or else I would have picked it up when I was there.

Wow - congrats!! May what? Our anniversary is May 23rd.
Thanks---May 18th :) We won't actually be in Disney on that day; that will come 4 days later, after the kids and I have finished school for the year.
AND...congrats to you. :thumbsup2 Sounds like you're really sticking with your running program. I woke up this morning, the sun was shining, and it was in the mid 50s. I decided to get out. Hadn't run in over a month, so I had to stop and do some "walking breaks", but felt great afterwards. I didn't realize that I missed it so much. Here's hoping for continued semi-warm days!

I am definately a Penguin!! :goodvibes It sounds like you are on the right path - glad you have resources!! :thumbsup2
Also for the 5K - WISH team is kicking around the idea of having a WISH 5K the Friday before the Half - no entry fee (or maybe a small fee if the organizer decides to do a medal?!) The cost for the Disney races are getting very high - and the 5K Disney Medal is leather - in '08 it was a run thru AK during the park time???? or it finished when the park opened??? All I know is this year they moved it to Epcot and it was before Park Opening - someone on WISH posted her vid capture of it - very cute short vid!
any way - keep on keeping on!! :thumbsup2

3.5 and 4.0 are mph. Just the speed settings on the treadmill. :thumbsup2 Wine and Dine run sounds fun! Haven't heard of that before. Honestly, I didn't realize there was more than the half marathon and marathon in January until just recently. Seems like there's quite a few races throughout the year.

Oops. Did I leave out that little fact? If I didn't have the treadmill, I wouldn't be able to do this program since I never have time away from the boys right now with Chuck gone. Once Chuck returns I will be able to run outside for at least some of my runs each week.

I spoke to my stepmother yesterday and it was a "yes" for watching the boys. Now, we just need to keep our fingers crossed that everything will turn out and we can make this happen. Otherwise, I'll be going alone.
I need some help. I've always had to plan a trip and book a place that would hold 5 people. Now it'll just be two of us at the most. I need some options! :cool1: Which DVC resorts have studio rooms? Are there any that might be available in the moderate resort price range? :confused3
I know the cheapest would be for us to stay at a value resort. And since we never have before, it would be a new experience. But, we were so spoiled with the atmosphere at POR last trip that I'm not sure we'd enjoy staying there.
I feel kind of stupid asking this question, but I'm really not familiar with all of the resorts. It was only recently that I realized non DVC owners could stay at DVC resorts. :rolleyes1
Help me out my friends! :goodvibes

I know you've stayed at Shades of Green before and prefer the Disney resorts because they have more of a Disney feel, but I'd think about Shades of Green for marathon weekend just because of the transportation. You can quickly walk over to the Poly and catch the monorail which is a big plus at 4 am. It means you can sleep a little longer because you don't have to catch a bus around 3:30 or so. And this year I heard nightmares about the bus lines for the buses back to the resorts after the race. Another option is to find someone to rent BLT points from (A DVC owner) and stay on the monorail that way. (Shades of Green is still cheaper.) Or you could shell out the big bucks and just pay cash for a monorail resort, but that is super pricey. No DVC resorts are moderate resorts. Just my 2 cents (and that is probably about what it is worth;))

There are two issues with Shades of Green - no Magical Express so we'd have to pay for transporation to and from the airport. And we can't get the Dining Plan. But, I will definitely keep what you said in my head (about dealing with the buses that morning). :thumbsup2

Personally....I wouldn't go for a value for a couples trip. They are just not very relaxing and you may need that before and after the race.
To keep the cost down with a DVC room, what about renting points? I don't know all that much about it but I do know that a lot of people on the boards have had luck and you can usually get a cheaper rate than going through Disney.

I heartily concur. If Ed and I did the marathon weekend again we would definitely conspire to stay on the monorail... the bus situation was a great source of distress. (He almost missed the race!)
Disney does run "specials" for racers at the Poly, but the SOG option sounds the most economical.

How on earth did I end up on Page 7??? Well, I'm here now and so excited for you!
I'm turning 40 in a few short weeks :ssst: and the health/weight issue has been on my mind as well. I decided to do something about it this year and started the Wii Fit Biggest Loser program in the beginning of January. I've made some major changes in not only my diet, but that of my family. SO far, I've lost 7 pounds, but I feel so much better already. The healthier eating and adding exercise to my daily routine has really helped! In fact, I saw my doctor last week and my blood pressure is so good, I may be able to come off my medication! Yee-Ha! :woohoo:
Anyway...I can relate and I'm so impressed with your decision to just GO FOR IT in such a big way!
I can't wait to join you in this journey!
As far as resorts go....we've only ever stayed at POR, so I'm probably not much help! :confused3

Oh. I didn't know that SOG guests don't get ME or the DDP.
You could rent points and stay at a DVC studio. January is a great time for DVC resorts because it is value season. :thumbsup2 You can check out the DVC-Planning board; I think there is a sticky at the top that explains renting points. I've never done it, so I don't want to give you information that is incorrect.
Bay Lake Towers at the Contemporary is the most "expensive", but it is the most convenient since it is on the monorail.
Old Key West is the least "expensive" point-wise, but you would be dependant on the buses. I do not recommend renting a car and driving, however, because the traffic was crazy that weekend!

Hi Carrisa,
Congrats on signing up for the marathon! Also on 10 + years of marriage. I agree not always easy. Tommy and I just took a quick 3 night/ 4days trip for our 10th Anniversary too. I really thought I was going to feel so guilty about the kids and cry the whole time. But actually once we got on the plane it got easier. I knew that we both really needed that time for us and why not at our favorite place :goodvibes. We did plan a trip for June for the family though,s o maybe that helps. Have a plan to take them back another time. Also we did not tell DS5 because he would be heartbroken, just said we were going to Florida. Bringing them back a small gift also helps. I have to say we really had so much taking Disney at a slower pace without the kids. No character lines to wait in and we skipped the dumbo dash this time too. I think you will have a nice time. Don't feel guilty, as your a great mother and it sounds like you never get much time for the just the two of you. Mom and dad getting away for some reconnecting will be great for the kids too ;).
Also I don't think a value resort will be the best choice, maybe a discount code or a pincode will help you be able to stay deluxe. We stayed at Yacht club and loved it. Forgot how much we missed deluxe resorts. But staying in a value is better than no Disney at all, right? I agree with pp you should look into maybe renting points at a DVC resort. Usually less $$ than going through Disney.
Way to go on your training. Maybe reading this will motivate me to finally lose my last 15 pounds from having Thomas 5 years ago :rolleyes1. I'm along for your journey popcorn::.

I've rented points twice now plus I'm renting again in June. You just contact someone on the rental board and they call and make the reservation for you. It does take a large amount of trust. I paid the cost for my rentals upfront and then the owner arranged the Magical Express and the Dining plan. It worked out great for me both times, but the owner can call and cancel the reservation at anytime and there is no recourse for those of us that rent points. (I did have a contract, but realistically the only way to enforce it is to go to small claims court and who is going to do that?) For me it always worked out great, however, and obviously I'd do it again. I like to think most people are trustworthy. It is a way to get a BLT studio for around $200 a night which is a steal. Anyway if you decide to go the point rental route don't hesitate to ask me any questions.

I think I need to come up a with a budget to figure out how much we can spend on our room. It will be a shorter trip in duration than we normally take, and less tickets needed to purchase. But, we'll also need airfare.
There is the possibility that they will once again extend the specials for military, but as of right now, I believe they end Sept. 30th of this year. I'll be keeping an eye out for that.

I am starting slow...my workouts right now are fairly light, but are getting progressively longer and harder. I don't have one "scheduled" every day, but when I do they focus on different things each time. One day it will be upper body, one day Yoga, one day lower body, one day full body....I just got a message after Friday's weigh-in that my workout intensity is being increased so we'll see what this week brings! I do Wii fit for a half hour or more on days I don't have training scheduled on the BL game.
I chose this one because I love the show and figured I'd be able to stick with it if it was something I liked. I can track my calories and also do extra training or challenges whenever I like. So far so good!

Yeah - I'm thinking more and more about Jenny's suggestion to go with Shades of Green. Even though we'd have to pay for transportation to and from the airport, it would still save us a ton of money if we want to go with a monorail resort (or close to a monorail resort anyway). And Shades of Green has some beautiful and relaxing grounds. Not to mention, we had wanted to eat at Mangino's on our first visit and never did. This would be the perfect time to try it. We don't need to go hog wild with our eating when we're there either. Both of us need to lose weight and going through all that work, I don't want to go to Disney and go crazy with my eating. I'm always much more tempted to get dessert when on the dining plan.

Four pounds already? :confused3 That's great!! Keep up the good work!
I got a Wii Fit Plus for Christmas and I love it. It's a really fun way to work out & there's no way I am joining a gym. According to the Wii, I don't really need to lose weight, but I'm definitely out of shape and could use toning around my mid-section. SOG would be the logical and practical choice.....
But it's not often that you get away as a couple. I would see what your budget could comfortably afford outside the SOG option.
WL or AKL would be wonderful choices or even POR or POFQ....

Zach is 6 and my belly still hasn't recovered from him & Alex! :rolleyes1
I've been starting to work at exercise and eating better since the new year began. And my weight has fluctuated a lot the past few weeks. But, according to the wii, I've lost 4 lbs since I weighed myself last week. :thumbsup2
SOG would be the logical and practical choice.....
But it's not often that you get away as a couple. I would see what your budget could comfortably afford outside the SOG option.
WL or AKL would be wonderful choices or even POR or POFQ....
After reading through the SOG thread today, I have pretty much decided I really don't want to stay there again. I'm actually starting to fall in love with CSR. We loved POR on our last visit, but I'd really like to try out another resort. And I think WL or AKL are out of our price range unless a great deal comes along. If it did, I'd probably choose to stay at the Poly.

Hey Melissa! Glad you stopped by. Jenny's TR is great - lots of great pictures and she's a hoot. :goodvibes
Aren't they?? As I was doing research for CSR I kept asking myself, "Why didn't we stay here last time instead of POR?" The dig site looks so cool and even the playground is amazing! Then I realized POR is the only one that can take 5 people. Oh well - this way Chuck and I can check it out. :thumbsup2 I have heard nothing but good things about it. The only thing I will miss is the boat ride to DTD. And this will be the first time we have to rely strictly on WDW transportation. But, I have read the buses at CSR seem to be pretty smooth sailing.

~ Week 1 Day 3 ~
Today seemed tougher than the other two days. For those not familiar with the program, I had the same exact workout/same intervals for the entire week. But, today I just had to mentally keep myself going. I think it could be a couple of things.
1) I've been going to bed too late. And most days I've been sleeping in too late (I think after 8 years of poor sleep due to motherhood, I'm allowed :rolleyes1 ). Today I made myself get out of bed the first time I woke up at 7:15. So, maybe I was a bit tired and didn't have as much energy.
2) I did lunges yesterday and I'm not sure that was a great idea. My legs were a bit sore and tired today.
3) Last night I ate a package of cheese crackers. It was the first processed food I've had since I started the program. Some might laugh that something like that could affect me so greatly, but I'm a strong believer in you are what you eat. When I eat poorly, I feel poorly. In my log book I'm keeping track of what I eat before I workout and making notes of any foods that might have hindered my performance. Need to stay away from crappy food.
I made it through the run, but I did struggle. I found that I had a hard time recovering during my brisk walks and I did have to slow down to 3.2 a couple of times. I also had a stitch up near my ribs for the first time today. It didn't start until right after my final run, when I started my cool down.
The good news is I didn't start feeling any discomfort in my normal spots (tops of feet/ankles/shins) until halfway through my 2nd run and it didn't seem as bad today overall. :thumbsup2
I'm thinking I will repeat week 1 next week. After reading Running for Mortals, I have no issues with taking it really slowly as that seems to be the recommended method. I have a whole year to get ready and to do it right.
My totals for today:
Speed: 3.0 --> 3.5 for warm up, 4.0 for jogs/3.5 for brisk walks, 3.5 -->3.0 cool down
Duration: 30 minutes
Distance: 1.8 miles

I'm spending a lot of time on the treadmill these days. And some of those moments are tough for me to get through. When you're running outside, you have things to look at to distract yourself. Unfortunately, this is my view while I'm working out:
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee163/carissanboys/005-2.jpg
I really need to get something for that wall. :scared:
I decided I needed some visually stimulating items on my treadmill to help inspire me while I walk/run - run/walk - and eventually - just run.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee163/carissanboys/002-3.jpg
On the left I have my beloved Wes Welker. He is a wide receiver for the New England Patriots and falls only slightly behind my love for Tom. He is a fighter and works his butt off to be the great player that he is. Unfortunately, he hurt his knee badly at the end of this season and will probably be out for most of next. :sad1: But, he'll be with me in spirit fighting to get back in the game.
Next to Wes is a picture of the castle. Liz - do you recognize this picture??? :rotfl: For those who aren't familiar with it, there is a "woman" running on a treadmill right there in front of the castle. There's a story that goes along with this picture, but I'll leave it to your imaginations. :rolleyes1
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee163/carissanboys/003-2.jpg
On the right side we have a picture of the Donald medal for running the half marathon. That one is pretty self-explanatory. :thumbsup2
And last, but most certainly far from least, is my main man, Tom Brady. And not only is it Tom, but it's a picture of him out running in the streets of Boston. :goodvibes What could be more inspiring than that? It does give my heart a brief moment of pain to view the Yankees hat upon his gorgeous head, but I will let it pass. Instead, I will invent a fantasy in my mind where he and I are running together through Beantown. I playfully reach over and take the hat to reveal his lovely dark hair. Then, with a perfectly executed toss and smile, I manage to land the hat in the street just in time for a dump truck to crush it.
*To any Yankee fans reading my thread - No offense intended. This is all in fun. ;) I'm just a diehard Sox fan and it's simply in my blood. I know you all understand (and reciprocate the feeling). :thumbsup2
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee163/carissanboys/004-3.jpg
So, there you have it. When I'm running and feeling like I can't make it through the workout, I glance down upon those four pictures and each one brings a smile to my face. Have you ever been having a tough workout and taken a moment to smile? It really does give you a little bit more energy. Try it sometime. :)

Now as far as WDW goes, I have heard that CSR is amazing. Have you seen this thread on the Resorts forum? http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2338336
I have never stayed there but so many really like it allot!!! ::yes::
You know, Car, I lost allot of weight years ago. 65 lbs after my youngest was born back in 1985. I joined WW and became a Lifetime member once I reached my goal. I am still at my goal weight and I found that this became a LIFE STYLE CHANGE for me. I worked so hard to lose all that weight that I knew I was not ever going back, ever.
Writing everything in your log is AWESOME!!! :thumbsup2
One thing I do is wear a pedometer ALL OF THE TIME. Clip it on my jeans every morning. I record my steps DAILY in my journal always striving to go one step more than the day before....sure there are days that I do not walk as many steps as I would have liked or should have....but I do not look back....just forward and try the very next day to walk one step MORE. :thumbsup2
It will totally amaze you how many steps an active Mom, like yourself walks. Try a pedometer and log that in your journal. I have bought a TON of pedometers over the years and this is the one I have now and LOVE IT!!! http://www.amazon.com/Omron-HJ-112-Digital-Pocket-Pedometer/dp/B0000U1OCI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1264551224&sr=1-1
:woohoo: Remember the slower the weight comes off, the longer it stays off!!! :woohoo:
:cheer2: KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!! :cheer2:

The TV is directly to my left when I'm on the treadmill. I could watch it, but I'd get a huge kink in my neck. We used to have it set up so I could watch TV, but we have such a small living room that the set up wasn't working for me. It's really not a big deal. I just wish I had a pretty picture on the wall to stare at.

CSR looks lovely. I would definitely suggest that you go on the Disney site occasionally and save itineraries. While they aren't doing PIN codes for 2011 yet a lot of us have gotten PIN's for this year by doing it and that could really open up your options! Oh, one thing I try very hard to do is eat nothing after dinner. :goodvibes If I am hungry then I make myself a cup of herbal tea or I have a banana or apple. Fruit is on the FREE list on WW's hence my always reaching for a piece of fruit. :thumbsup2

I realize I should be sore from doing the lunges. Just not sure it was the smartest thing to do the day before my run. I took it easy on my legs today.
Something else you will probably find as you increase the workouts. You will sleep a lot better!
I normally sleep very well and never have problems with insomnia. I had a cold right before I started this program and was taking cold medicine at night. Once I stopped, I was just having a hard time falling asleep because I was excited about this challenge. When I get excited about something, I have a difficult time drifting off. Once asleep, I have no problems. I just need to start getting myself to bed earlier. I've gotten into a bad habit of staying up too late with my husband gone.

That's good to know. Moms know how to use "the look" to make their children obey - regardless of their size.
But, I'd still like to grow a couple of inches taller.

Sully was 95% for height on his last check up so I imagine he's going to be pretty tall. Chuck is only 5'11", but I think Sully will be quite a bit taller. Owen is tall for his age, too. Connor is my little guy. I think it would be tough if a younger sibling ended up taller, at least when they're kids.

Signing on. I'll have to go back and get caught up though.
I run about 3 miles most workdays during lunch. Well, it's been a little cold lately so I've been DISing instead, but when it gets warmer I'll be back out there. I had to get more active to help the ol' cholesterol and blood pressure. It would be so cool to do the half marathon someday.

Hi Carissa,
sorry I got a bit behind, lots going on in the Scrappie household lately I usually only get every other day on the Dis and when I di it's short snippits...
But I love how everthing is going and all the new little updates..
Ok I have seriously had my last snack binge in the afternoon...I need to get in shape myself...I don't see a 1/2 marathon in my future...but some more regular intentional movement would be good...thanks for motivating me.
I love that you are thinking of doing the weekend now as a couples weekend  I can't wait for our trip alone in 2011.

No, worked up to it. I started almost 2 years ago. Started walking, and did that for probably a couple of months. Fast-paced though. Then started jogging. I could probably only jog about a quarter of a mile, and then walk, then jog again. Each time I went out I tried to increase the distance I'd go before walking. After a few months I was up to the 3 miles without stopping and have stayed at that distance, but have tried to improve the times. Over the winter I lose all of my progress, but I know I can work back into it. I went out once last week and was able to do 3 miles without stopping, but I was a couple minutes slower than what I was doing back in November.

I saw there was some discussion about renting DVC points. The 2011 point charts were just released a few days ago and all of January is in the cheapest point "season" ("Adventure Season"). The marathon weekend is not higher. Just FYI.

Awesome. I don't know how true it is, but I read someone say that once you get to the point of being able to run for 3 miles straight, even if you stop for a while, it's much easier to get back into it when you do. That you never really need to start from scratch again.

I'm glad the shoes are working out for you.:thumbsup2 I haven't read any of the Penquin's books in years but I'm hoping that they will eventually be available for Kindle. Recently I have read three books that were very inspiring and motivational: The Non-Runners Marathon Guide for Women by Dawn Dais (very funny, snarky), Sole Sisters: Stories of Women and Running by Jennifer Lin and Susan Warner (awe inspiring), and Women Who Run by Shanti Sosienski (ditto). If you ever come across any of these books, I highly recommend them. The Non-Runners...made me laugh out loud and Sole Sisters made me cry and get up off my butt and run.
BTW- I like the motivational pics on your TM. We live on an Army post and occassionally I use the TM at the gym down the street. On a good day there will be a really fit soldier boy on the TM in front of me so I just imagine that they are a)giving me a piggy back ride :lmao: or b)pulling me along at their pace. Does anyone know if there is any cute Disney running gear out there? I'm thinking that might make good rewards for myself.
To others who have been through the program or set health goals for yourself, did you have some sort of reward system? And if so, what types of things did you do? I'd love to hear them.
Initially I thought I would allow myself to begin planning for this trip only after I completed C25K. I still think that's a good idea to keep me motivated, but you already know I've been researching resorts. :rolleyes1 Does research count as planning? ;)
~ Week 2 Day 1 ~
On Tuesday I finished up week 1 of the program. I mentioned that I would continue with week 1 for another week. Well, I decided to go ahead and give week 2 a try just to see if I could do it. Let me rephrase that. I knew I could do it, I just wasn't sure how tough it would be for me. :rolleyes1
Week 2 consists of 6 cycles - 90 seconds running/2 minutes brisk walking. Even though my walk times were increased by 30 seconds this week, I found those two minutes went by far, far too quickly! I'd hear the speaker's voice coming back on to tell me it was time to run again and I would be thinking, "Please! Not yet! I haven't gotten my breath back." :headache:
I am happy to report that I did complete the workout. The last run was VERY difficult and I really didn't think I was going to be able to finish it. I admit I stopped a few seconds short of the expected 90, but I'm not going to beat myself up over that.
The discomfort I was having last week is really improving. I felt some of it today, but not nearly as much and not immediately. My thighs were more sore and tired during the run than anything. I think that's a good thing? :confused3
It's funny how this program makes me feel or the aspect of running in general. I get both excited and nervous about tackling each day on the treadmill. Part of me fears it. I'm afraid I won't be able to do it or I will find it too difficult. But, I push myself through it and in the end I feel empowered for making my body do something my mind didn't think it could. :thumbsup2
So, to week 2 I say, "Bring it on!!" :dancer:
My totals for today:
Speed: 3.0 --> 3.5 for warm up, 4.0 for jogs/3.5 for brisk walks, 3.5 -->3.0 cool down
Duration: 30 minutes
Distance: 1.8 miles

But not tonight. I"m going to sit on my big bum tonight and watch Northanger Abbey with my older girls.
I heard a while ago that there are two kinds of people. People who are motiviated by goals, and people who are motivated by rewards. I am definitely a "reward" kind of gal!! For example if need to do the dishes, I often find myself saying, OK, get them done, and you get 20 minutes of DISsing. Dirty toilet? No problemo! Clean it, and you get 1 hour of DISsing. See a pattern here?? :confused3:lmao:

I haven't looked into any Disney running gear (yet ;)) but I do have my eye on a running skirt that has a Minnie vibe, it is red with small white polka dots and a black mesh waistband found here www.runningskirts.com. But, you're trying to maintain a weight. I need to lose! I can't be thinking about sweets. I have zero willpower when it comes to limiting myself.
We eat dinner very early so there's no way I can go without something before bed. I've been limiting myself to either an apple or some plain popcorn. And tea.
I'll have to look up to see what a NALGENE is, but I drink quite a bit of water. I drink nothing else. If I drank water constantly all day, I would never leave the bathroom - seriously!!

Your body is getting used to the whole running thing and one day you'll realize it just feels normal to run. (I can't predict exactly when that will be. It comes easier to some than others:confused3)
Oh and Colin Firth is Mr. Darcy:lovestruc
I'm looking forward to that moment!
Yes, he plays the role wonderfully. I really loved the movie version, but I'm enjoying this mini-series even more.
That's exactly how I feel about excited and nervous. I so hate to fail! But if I don't fail I've never tried right? HUGE congrats to you for even starting, let alone finishing it! :cheer2: Girl you are a RUNNER!!! How does it feel??
I don't know if I consider myself a runner yet, but I'm getting there! :thumbsup2
I am such a dork I saw your congrats to jenjolt for losing 30 pounds and I got excited and thought "I didn't know I lost 30 pounds." :headache: It only lasted a moment though - in my defense I'm multitasking.:lmao: And yes jenjolt - congrats!!!! I will be joining you soon!
:rotfl: Pretty soon it will be you I am congratulating!
I haven't looked into any Disney running gear (yet ;)) but I do have my eye on a running skirt that has a Minnie vibe, it is red with small white polka dots and a black mesh waistband found here www.runningskirts.com. Someone had mentioned on another thread that they were wearing this running skirt for the Donald this year and it has been on my W.I.S.H.list since.
Thanks for the link! The only way I could do running skirts at this point is if I were wearing something underneath otherwise there would be lots of chafing.
Oh I forgot about the running clothes...WDW marathon stuff was available online, not suer if it still is...
Do you know where? Through the Disney website?
(Is that a PATS blanket behind Oreo?)
Why, yes it is. :thumbsup2 In fact, it's both a Pats blanket and a Sox blanket. :goodvibes I made it a while back and I LOVE it!

Good for you for stepping it up and pushing through! Sometimes it's just about not quitting!
My workouts are going well...we've moved from light workouts to moderate workouts. They used to be 18 minutes (plus warm up and cool down) but now we're up to 30. Definitely more challenging and my body is feeling it!
I weigh in tomorrow so I'll let you know if I'm seeing any results! :)

I don't remember if I had any rewards for myself when doing C25K... For me that amazing feeling of progressing through each week was reward. I LOVE that sense of accomplishment.
That's a neat blanket. Did you just use two sheets of the fleece and tie them together with all those tied ends?

I realize I should be sore from doing the lunges. Just not sure it was the smartest thing to do the day before my run. I took it easy on my legs today.
General rule in strength training is to alternate the muscles that you are working on so it's more of an every other day, you can do legs one day, arms the next, then legs, then arms etc. Abs can be every day though.
Where it gets wonky is if your cardio is using the same muscles. Theoretically, because you will be sore the day after or even the second day of strength training, it can be better to run and do lunges on the same day since you won't actually be sore yet, then rest the next. But if you are running every day...that really won't work!

Yes. It's called a tied-fleece blanket. They're very easy to make and so awesome to cuddle with when it's cold. :goodvibes

Just found your great TR, and it is fantastic! Congrats on getting moving! You are inspiring me to do the same! I have only done 2 running races, both Disney 5K races (the Minnie 5K and EEC) but stopped running after I completed them and haven't returned.
In the meantime, DH has bought a treadmill and taken up running. He will be doing his first Half-Marathon next weekend, and is proving to be a real running machine!:worship:
So as you can see, I really need to catch up! :rotfl:
Lately I have been doing a whole lot of this :surfweb: and this :happytv: but not a whole lot of this :yay: (sorry, no smiley faced runner, but you get the point!)

Hi Carissa - You've inspired me too! You've started a movement!
I think I already told you I got a Wii Fit Plus for Christmas... I do pretty well using it on the weekend, but now I'm determined to use it during the week too! I'd like to use it every day but I'll be satisifed with 2 or 3 times during the week to add to my once or twice on the weekend. Baby steps...
I am also trying to do more of the strength training, along with the aerobics & balance games. I did those lunges yesterday - OUCH! I can't walk very well today! :rolleyes1 I have also been doing the jackknife exercise since my belly is my biggest problem area. I'm amazed how sore I am with just the few reps they have you do. It's either really effective, or I'm just really out of shape!
I'll also get back to walking with my neighbor one the weather warms up a bit.
Anyways - thanks for the inspiration! Keep up the good work!

I have been lazy the past two days. On Friday I was supposed to do some sort of cross training, which is usually boxing on the wii and strengthening exercises. But, I skipped it. :sad2: Saturday is a run day, but I felt very tired due to being woken up very early by my children and a friend sleeping over (Sully's friend). I decided to do my run today, which is my normal rest day. I don't like getting out of routine with workouts because it's a slippery slope to quitting altogether when I start taking unscheduled days off. That is why I am so glad I went ahead and registered for the half marathon while I was super excited about it. I know myself and know how I get interested in things and then the interest slowly goes away and I give up on whatever I was doing.
I will not let that happen to this challenge of mine. :thumbsup2 I am very glad I started a PTR to hold myself accountable. You all keep me going. :grouphug:
In other exciting news, we got a snowstorm yesterday!! Virginia Beach rarely gets snow, and when it does, it's only an inch or so. We ended up with 6 - 9 inches! I'm not quite sure what we got, although I tend to think we got the lower amount. I have a few pictures to share with you all.

~ Week 2 Day 2 ~
Today was mentally challenging. No doubt about it. I went into the run feeling like I couldn't do it. Not a good thing.
This was a conversation I had with myself throughout the 30 minutes:
"This is hard work!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :headache: I don't like hard work."
"Look lady. You made your body get to the point it is because you were lazy and didn't like to work hard. And you ate too much food!! So, quit your complaining and do the time!!"
"But, why does it have to be so hard??? Why can't I lose weight and get in shape by taking nice, easy walks on the treadmill??" :rolleyes1
:sad2: "Because! That is not challenging for you! You need something that pushes you to your limits. Taking up running and setting goals for 5Ks and half marathons is going to get you in shape and empower you."
"Maybe it isn't good for my body to be working so hard."
"Are you seriously going to wimp out on me?? I know you are stronger than that. You may not realize you are, but I know it."
"Fine! I'll do it, but I won't like it." :snooty:
"I don't care if you like it or not right now. Just go through the motions. Eventually it will get easier and you'll look amazing and you can thank me profusely then."
I kid you not. This is what was going on in my head during my "wog" today. The good thing is, it helped pass the time. :rotfl: And, I am proud to say I completed day 2. I didn't even stop early for the last run. :thumbsup2 But, I did have to slow down to about 3.2/3.3 during the brisk walks. I can't seem to recover enough from the runs if I keep it at 3.5.
I made it through each run by telling myself, "Just do this one. Don't worry about the rest right now. Just do this one." After the third run I knew I was halfway through. And once I got to the 2nd to last run, I knew I'd make it. Baby steps. :goodvibes
I think the reason I struggled so much today is because I had way too many days off in between. Hopefully, my run on Tuesday will be much better.
My totals for today:
Speed: 3.0 --> 3.5 for warm up, 4.0 for jogs/3.5 for brisk walks, 3.5 -->3.0 cool down
Duration: 30 minutes
Distance: 1.78 miles

I hear ya! My biggest motivator for this new year was knowing that I was really disgusted with myself whenever I looked in a mirror or saw pictures of myself. I hate feeling like that. And there's no reason to feel like that, you know? We are in control of our actions. If we're not happy about how we look and feel, then by gosh - we can do something about it! I'm tired of listening to myself whine.

:rotfl: They enjoyed it somewhat. The younger two got cold pretty fast and didn't like the snow pelting them in the face. They played outside a bit longer today because the sun was out, but they still got wet very quickly. I think they like the idea of snow more than the reality. ;)

That's a great way of thinking about it! And so true. :thumbsup2
What did you think??

You're so smart, Cynthia. :thumbsup2 I hadn't even thought of that. And I'm not running every day. I only run 3 days a week. :thumbsup2
Nah, not smart at ALL, just have worked with trainers before and have a husband who likes to remind me of things I already know! So if you alternate your trainings you will give your various muscle groups time to recover.
It's a slippery slope though. I'll be at the gym and I'll do the legs and abs and back and then go, oh I shouldn't do my arms today, I'll do them tomorrow.
And then I don't go to the gym "tomorrow".
Here's a tip for you, yesterday I put some disney music on my i-pod for my next trip and yesterday when I went for a run it came on and really motivated me. I thought about all of the disney marathon runners and I thought that would be a good motivation for them:goodvibes
Playlists are a WONDERFUL thing. I have some serious stuff on my ipod for cardio and it really helps!

Hi,
It took me 2 days, to get through the thread. I didn't want to miss anything, because I knew there would be great things in between your posts.
Question 1. How far is the 1/2 marathon-I think I know, but just not sure.
You are doing a great job.
I already found many things that I am doing wrong. I had no idea to start out jogging slower. I've been doing 45 minutes on my elipctic trainer, to get my cardio workout, and then I was doing training on a treadmill. I am walking 4 minutes and running 1 minutes, and realized I am running to fast. 5.2. I realized 5.2 was to fast and I went down to 5.0, but my heart rate is 175 in that minute. I am going to really slow it down.
2nd Question, do you have a program for your treadmill to increase/decrease for you. I use one of the older treadmills at the YMCA and they have to be decreased/increased manually. If the newer treadmills can do this for me, I'd be much happier, I feel like I am always loosing my balance when I am pushing the buttons.
If you are going to rent points, you can do so at the 11 month mark, if a member belongs to a certain resort. If a DVC member don't belong to lets say the Beach Club, then they can book at the 7 month mark.
You have to look at "how many points" it will take for each nite,
but have an agreement with the DVC member, for how much they want to rent the points for. A couple of years ago, people were renting out points for almost $12-$14 a point. With the bad economy-it has gotten much better.
I rent from an owner for $10, and when I looked at the DVC Boards, it is pretty much now at the $10 per point mark. If you can get $8 or $9 a point, it will be a huge bargain.
I would go to the "Wanted to Rent Points" and put in for your DVC resort and see if there is anything, plus read the Points for Rent Board, and maybe someone has there points for rent. Those usually go really fast.
