I am a graphic design student looking for help with an assignment due Sunday Jan 17. I have to find a blog and tell whether it is a asynchronous or synchronous form of online communication. I have to do this with discussion board forum and a live chat forum as well. then I have to tell the merits and/or downfalls of each. If anyone has any info or comments I would love to hear..read them. Thank you all.

Welcome to the DIS. I am not sure what kind of comments you are looking for, but the DIS Boards are the best forums on the net. I have been on MANY travel forums and this by far is the most comprehensive and active on out there.
I guess a thread would be considered "synchronus" and each board topic unsynchronus?
Good luck.

actually discussion forums, emails and blogs are asynchronous because there is not a constant data stream. IM's and Chat would be synchronous.

What I like about the asynchronous forums are that you have time to think of a response. Also you can edit your posts if you recognize a mistake after you post.
If you want some info about chats you can go into the DIS chatroom.

There are many excellent articles online, easily accessible, comparing and contrasting the pros and cons of synchronous vs. asynchronous communication. If you are looking for a quick comment:
Synchronous communication is wonderful because it is in real time. You feel as though you are part of a conversation and are more likely to feel connected to those with whom you are interacting.
However, the benefit of asynchronous communication is that you have time to really sit and think about what you want to say and thus form more cogent and detailed messages.
Good luck.
