View Full Version : COMPLETE Progress Sketch Swap CLOSED
AlexWyattMommy
01-14-2010, 05:25 AM
Due Date: April 8th
-You are allowed to rotate the sketch/map in any direction you want.
-Please try to stay as true to the sketch/map as possible.
-Please use a layer of cardstock as your base. You may completely cover it with thinner paper. It is very difficult to sort them when they bend and sometimes the embellishments get caught.
-Please use quality paper on your layouts. I will not limit your “name” brands, but please use good judgment. If the patterned paper doesn't have a name printed on it, don't use it.
-You are not required to double mat your elements or have to embellish the elements one/two way.
-You can add a mat layer to the photo placements if you like. That is the only alteration to the layout that should be done.
-You may use any kind of embellishment you like on these sketches where they are indicated or in place of a “layer” of paper. Ribbon and fiber are good substitutions for paper layers.
-You may use different embellishments on each of your layouts. Please ensure they are of the same quality.
-Please use generic non gender specific titles – Smile, Happy, Giggle, Sunny Day, Splash, PlayTime, etc.
Momma’s Boy, Good Girl, Little Princess/Prince, 4th of July, Mother’s Day are too specific.
-You will not have to tell me your title selection. It will be the surprise element along with the colors.
-Please do not sign up for more than you can handle. But these should be easier than other page swaps as the placement is already decided for you.
-New to me swappers are limited to TWO groups.
-Please sign the back of your layout.
-Place each group in their own 2-gallon baggie and label the baggie with your real name, DISname and group information.
-Please send postage for a medium or large flat rate box. Do NOT use the Click-it postage from USPS. I cannot use it. It has to be used the day it was printed. Stamps, check or cash are acceptable.
-If you don't mind the delay in return shipping, you may use non-priority to save some $$. Please use packaging I can reuse and send 3-4 extra stamps from what it cost you to mail it to me. Just in case some pages are heavier than others.
-Please include your address in the box. Address label, index card, priority label.
HAVE FUN WITH IT!
I will open up more groups of the same sketch/page map if there is interest.

This my take on Group B
The background is textured Bazzill
The shaped pattern paper is from the DCWV Indian Summer
The glitter paper is from DCWV Indian Summer
The green pattern paper is American Traditional Designs
The burgundy solid is The Paper Company (JoAnn's solids)
The journaling lines are stamped Kaleidacolor and clear heat embossed
I forgot to ink the burgundy photo mat so I put a glitter photo corner to embellish it some
The title is orange glitter paper using Graphical Speaking
The fiber is from a swap. ;)
The staples are orange. [hint: I put the smaller pieces together first and stapled one side of the fiber first and then put it on the larger pattern paper on the background and then stapled that side. My stapler wouldn't do the far side otherwise.]
http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q179/alexwyattmommy/102_4888.jpg
It a little dark, but it looks cool in person. That is green, not yellow.
I did this in 45 minutes from picking paper to finish. I will take more time and get the rest a bit more straight. Promise.

AWM, your page looks great. I think this swap will be a great way to get us out of our comfort zones and try new things.
AlexWyattMommy

Just an FYI - where it shows a shaped edge or whole piece - you don't have to use the one shown. You can use a pre-made or make your own with the Cricut or edge punchers. You can also use the Bazzill shaped strips on either side of a straight piece to achieve the look.

Because this looks to be a smaller participation swap, I have changed the mailing requirements. If you mail at least 10 before the due date, you can mail it first class. If want, I will also return it to you first class.
No need for the USPS system to always get our money. I don't think these will be heavy. It is finding a box or padded envelope [with cardstock/cardboard to stiffen it] the right size that is hard.

I am confused. What are they used for? Will they all look the same?
AlexWyattMommy
01-18-2010, 08:47 AM
These are complete pages. They will be used for everyday [non Disney] photos in the sizes specified.
Each group will have the same basic feel, but will be different because we will use different papers, embellishments and possibly perspective [rotating the sketch].
So yes and no for your last questions. :teeth:

Explain the "sketch" top me.

Explain the "sketch" top me.
The sketches are the page maps in the first post, that show you how your page is supposed to look. You can rotate the page map however you'd like, and use whatever colors and stuff you'd like on it, but in the end, everyone in the group will have used the same "sketch" as the basis for their page.
It's like the rough draft of the finished layout.
AlexWyattMommy
01-18-2010, 10:32 AM
Think of it like a map. It shows you where you should put the paper, the photos, the title, journaling and embellishments. It gives you a guide to follow.
You are free to use any combination of papers, as long as it is quality name brand paper, and the decorative edging does not need to look like the sketch exactly.
example:
sketch

01-18-2010, 10:51 AM
So you can pick whatever colors you want and just make it look like the sketch?
Where it says title you would just have a blank place. The user would add "family" in the example above?
AlexWyattMommy
01-18-2010, 10:54 AM
You may choose any color scheme you like. :)
You do however have to give it a generic title. See first post for examples.

Ooooh ok .. well I am skipping 12x12 page swaps due to the ROBBERY USPS is getting by mailing them! lol ..
No wonder I hosted so many, wow! I have joined a 8x8 and 6x6 .. it's weird how much I didn't mind making 6x6 for special albums and gifts tho! Forced me outta my comfort level .. have you ever made those sizes?
I have even put 6x6 on 12x12 pages as well .. all of the 'thinking outside the box' rut that scrapbookers can get into ..
I am swamped now tho .. but will keep my eyes open later in the year tho .. it's hard to say no to swaps lol ..
My bad.
They are 12x12.
AlexWyattMommy
01-19-2010, 04:50 PM
The autograph books have been 8x8 and there was a swap or two that did the 6x6. The 6x6 is not my favorite as I like my photos 4x6. :rotfl: Not much left over for embellishments.
I'm not fond of the USPS rates either. That is why I opted to let this swap come and go other than Priority.
Hope to see you in other swaps. :thumbsup2

Question:
I am working on Sketch E. The journal lines...I am stumped. I don't have a journal stamp. I bought some lined paper, but it doesn't match. I could hand draw the lines, bit honestly that doesn't sound fun and it would probably take me longer to measure the lines precisely than to do the whole rest if the page.
Any suggestions?
AlexWyattMommy
01-26-2010, 01:44 PM
You could make a regular journal box, like our elements.
You could use striped paper.
You could supply a sheet of paper that the swapper can computer journal on and then cut to size.
You could just frame the spot with brackets.

No it is not a sticker. It is 12x12 paper from M's We R Memory Keepeers Grandma's Kitchen Pen Pals. WHat are the stickers you have?
It is so hard to type - -I just shoveled for an hour and a half...my arms feel like noodles. I have only about 1/3 of it complete:sad2:
AlexWyattMommy
02-07-2010, 09:49 AM
We don't shovel. If someone falls and hurts themselves on your property after you have shoveled, you are responsible. If you don't shovel, then it is obvious that it is not safe and if someone hurts themselves you are okay. :confused3 It's the weirdest rule.
;) Personally I think it is the lazy persons rational for not shoveling. :rotfl2:
There is about 3-5 inches but it is heavy stuff. It compacted in my tire treads before I could even back out of the garage. I got stuck in my own driveway. DH had to push it back in with his 4-wheel drive.
He's out there now trying to pack it down so we can drive out tomorrow. It's gravel and using the plow on it is bad news. The farmers aren't really happy when the gravel mucks up their machines. So we just don't bother. :rotfl2:

02-07-2010, 09:56 AM
Really? Apparently the city gave out tickets to those that didn't shovel within 24 hrs last storm -- of course, they did a horrible job on the streets, the (public)preschool sidewalks weren't cleared and they didn't do any street plowing at all by the Catholic school. I did pay some kids to shovel yesterday morning, but we got a lot more after that - -and then I have the huge drift at the corner. A lot of kids walk by my house on the way to school, so I really need to get it done. There is some melting, so I hope I can rest until early afternoon.
Of course, I have house painters coming tomorrow so I need to clear out my livingroom and back foyer, and Wade is sick. I really need a clone here to get some of this done.
I really need to just step away from the computer:rotfl2:

Hey all! I need help. I was going to do the spots myself, but then I realized I am already in all the groups. I am just not that creative to come up with that many different color combinations.
These are due in just over a month. I can give us two more weeks for the angel to work on them or I can swap them so that you don't get duplicates but you may get maps you didn't sign up for.
What does the majority say?
ZeroToHero

I was thinking that too.
In general I am a fan of sketching, although I am usally working from my own sketch. Working from the posted sketches was challenging for the first two, but I think the rest will be easier. The main benefit to me is I feel like I created a much more beautiful page than I would have otherwise.
I think it could work . It definitely takes care of the defining the requirements. I would make sure that you weren't going to lose swappers over the sketches though.

Using the DCWV or Cosmo Cricket or BasicGrey packs are a great way to make sure your patterns and solids match up. Or using the two sided print/solids works too and they usually have matching pieces.
The hardest part for me will be making the titles generic. I knew that going into this, but I didn't want to limit the uses of the pages by pre-selecting titles you had to use.

Yes, I agree. I have been looking through my cricut carts for title/phrases. The title spots are small which I also find challenging.

Good questions! I could get about 13 sketches and let you route them around, but also for those who are kinda scared to use the sketches to let them keep to the basic rules for our page swaps. Or would that be to complicated for others?

See DIT... she keeps on eye on you! Actually the past two months I have done well. I think each month I did go over like $10. Not too bad. I am going to try to make up the difference this month and take $20 out of my budget to get me right again. I bought Hertigage cart for $30 last month. I think that is how I ended up over.
This month I am waiting till the middle of the month and using all my $ to make on online order at two peas. That means NO stores this month. Maybe I will save on some gas.

Yes - I got them at Ms. They are glued really well together. But my cutter bee made quick work of them. ;) The one Ms had them $2.99 and then 25% off. But another Ms had them on clearance for $0.99. I got them in purple/white, pink/white, pink/green, solid blue, blue/green, and solid clear. I plan on using them on another layout too.

I have been hand drawing in the lines. My ruler and calculator have been getting a workout with this swap. I can't just eyeball things. I have been measuring my printout version and multiplying it by 12 divided by 3 10/16 to figure out the size on a 12x12 page. Nuts I know.

Well I ended up ordering it yesterday from Die Cut Central. I got it for $29.32 shipping included. Better than BF price.

Good girl! That is a terrific price! And that cart is marvelous - it does have a lot on it. This delayed gratification budgeting thing is crappy, but is worthwhile! Keep up the great work! Ka-ching!

It is from storybook, and yes I did stretch it in CDS.
If you don't have DS, I strongly recommend it. I hate it for the things it can't do easily, but I do use it a whole lot. It is great for figuring out what size to cut, finding images, fitting lots on a page and just slightly altering things to fit - -like I did with this image. Lots of people do really wonderful things with it, but even if you don't want to learn those techniques, it is worth the $29.99 sale price.

Talk to mom about seeing her DS and than maybe a run for the store! ;)
For that price I would be willing to give in and pay since i have spent less than $20.00 so far this year and it's only been adhesive!

Group D -- I have 4 done, need to do the other set of 4. I found this sketch hard to work with. I am not sure why. It may be because I am trying to deal with my stash of paper. I also missed a few things in the sketch when I was inititally pulling papers etc - -I missed the little piece at the top and the other one at the bottom. I also find the small title places challenging.
I was pleased with the staples - -I don't have a good stapler, so I just used a peper piecer like I would with a brad.

I'll be cheating and using the real thing on one of my layouts. Until I get DS, I'm not wasting paper trying to figure out the right size for a space.

Ha -- more dibs!
I was going to use Superstar for one of the grp C layouts, but I didn't like all of the stars overlapping. Star is a good title.
I have SEI paper pad -- Addison. I has blue, green, orange & brown. I wanted to use that. I will probably need to make two different color schemes. I guess a non-feminine title, or gender neutral topic would work best. Maybe explore or discover?
