... and I'm so worried for her.

She's on a medical mission trip in a small village just west of Port-au-Prince, called Petit Goave. All of the phones are down. The electricity goes down all the time, so I'm sure it's completely out there now.

One of the guys on her trip sent a text earlier saying that their team is all alive, but that they're having to dig some of them out of rubble... but there haven't been any other messages from him since. (I'm actually shocked he could get a text out at all.)

Some of the aftershocks have been centered right on their little town.

I can't imagine how terrified she must be right now. :guilty:

My thoughts and prayers go out to your mom, the team, and the other people in that area. It must be frightening for everyone.

Haiti is near and dear to my heart. We have a sister church in a very remote part in the southwestern area and we sponsor 2 children with their education. My DH and I went with a team in July 2008 to visit and hold a seminar for them. We are thankful that they weren't affected by the earthquake, minus some shaking.

I am praying for you. Your best bet of getting information in or out of that area is probably through the Red Cross. You could also contact your senator's office as Sec of State Clinton has already stated she is sending military and humanitarian aid into the area. Maybe the government will have some sort of contact list? Prayers and love sent your way. Please keep us updated.

Haiti update... There are some injuries in Mom's group. Don't know who or any details, haven't talked to her. There's a plane standing by in Miami to evac them, but can't get to Haiti due to airport damage. So there's a Navy chopper being sent to evac them, and we're sending texts to all the phones in the group to tell them where to meet the evac team, praying and hoping that somehow a message will get thru to someone there.

Thanks again to all for the prayers and support.

I do feel a great deal of relief. Not knowing her location or what the prospects were for evacuating her was very frustrating. I couldn't get there to help her, and didn't know who could. Update from CNN (http://edition.cnn.com/2010/TRAVEL/01/14/faa.haiti.flights/) less than an hour ago:

Haiti halts flights into overburdened airport
January 14, 2010 -- Updated 2128 GMT (0528 HKT)

Washington (CNN) -- The Haitian government has halted flights into the Port-au-Prince airport for now, because ramp space is too crowded, and there is no fuel, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday.

Laura Brown said no flights from the United States will be taking off until clearance is given.

One military aircraft was circling the airport in a holding pattern, and 10 civilian aircraft were waiting to land, Brown said.

I'm sure they're working on the problem, since this means a delay to the planes bringing in humanitarian aid as well. Hopefully they'll have it re-openend soon ...

Edited to add - glad to see the update from Towncrier! Looks like they were able to get out before the airport closed.

I've gotten word that my mom's team has all made it to the airport in Haiti, apparently transported there by UN vehicles. Still not a lot of info on when they'll fly out, how (sounds like they've been cleared through the State Dept for military transport), or what destination, but this is very welcome progress. Also no real information on their physical condition.

Thank you to everyone for the continued prayers and support.

LOL!!! That's my mom!

I talked with her a couple of times this evening. She's at a hospital in Miami being xrayed and CT scanned. She's on a little bit of morphine, so talking with her is a little... disorganized. She told me they caught her at the airport. "I haven't showered in days, I have blood in my hair and this is the day they interview me on TV!"

The team has had a very rough few days. You can hear it in her voice there, but it was so good to be able to see her.

Her team of 12 wound up splitting into 4 little groups. She was in the first group that flew out. There's another small group of 3 that left from Port au Prince late this afternoon, and two people who made it to Santo Domingo. All of those groups are meeting in Miami tonight and flying back to Dallas on a private plane (We're really, really hoping Mom will be on that plane.)

Another two people were sent to Martinique somehow, I don't know how that occurred. But they're doing some emergency surgery on one of the team members who has serious injuries there now.

I'm waiting now to get the call that Mom has been released and will be on the plane tonight.

I think I'll wait until another time to show her that video. Thanks for posting it, Kevin! (It's a Small World After All, It's a Small World After All, It's a Small World ...) :)

The tears were for the survival of Nancy and the the other woman they interviewed who said as she trapped, her thoughts were that she hoped she would die quickly and not suffer a slow painful death. I give thanks for their lives and for their rescuers.

And I shed tears for all those who had their lives crushed. And tears for those who survived, but have lost homes and so muchmore.

Michelle, that is our team! The 2 who went to Santo Domingo are home, too. I just saw them at the hospital, and they're doing well. A chartered plane flew into Santo Domingo late yesterday afternoon or early evening and picked them up. Then it continued to Miami where it picked up 8 more of the team (including mom), then onto Dallas in the wee hours this morning. We're feeling very lucky that these 10 people are now home. Traumatized and exhausted, but home.

We are all praying very hard for the woman with the serious internal injuries. She's in Guadaloupe and was having surgery at last report. Another doctor (injured, but still strong) has stayed with her through the ordeal, insisting on going with her.

After the flight, the hospital this morning, and getting Rxs filled, we're finally home. I just got Mom settled in for a nap, and I think I need one too.

Later, we'll talk about the disaster and what she went through, as well as what we were seeing from this side. We've talked a lot already, but there are many more details and emotions to deal with.

After that, we'll begin to take stock of the things that we need to take care of for her (her ID, credit and insurance cards, ATM card, cash, cell phone, camera, clothing, cosmetics, etc. are back in Haiti under the rubble).

For now, we can relax a little and finally sleep.

Kathy, I am so glad your mother is alive and receiving medical care in the states.

I saw a girl on television who was kind of banged up and had her right leg amputated below the knee. She was saying how grateful she was to be alive and here.

Words cannot express how terribly I feel for the poor people who are there, who are at best surrounded by the rotting bodies and the accompanying stench of death, hungry and thirsty and hoping for aid that may or may not show up. Then there are the ones who are hurt and sick on top of all that...

It is all so very heartbreaking and it is good to hear a couple stories of happy endings.

Those poor souls.

Here are first-hand accounts of the events in Haiti from three members of Mom's group.

The three spoke today, less than 12 hours since arriving home. I watched a live feed of these interviews with Mom, so much emotion and so much detail of their ordeals and fears and strength are here. Have the tissues handy.

The account by Alex is particulary powerful... if you only have time for one, listen to Alex and you'll hear, as I did, what my mother (Nancy) and her friends really experienced.

When you listen to Lila, realize that she and her husband have led this mission for over 30 years and have a very strong tie to the Haitian people. Also realize that they are in their 70s and 80s... she is an amazing, strong, gracious woman.

Katy Langley (http://www.wfaa.com/video/featured-videos/Haiti-missionaries-speak-out-Katy-Langley-81769557.html)

Alex Paz (http://www.wfaa.com/video/featured-videos/Haiti-missionaries-speak-out-Alex-Paz-81770362.html)

Lila Foree (http://www.wfaa.com/video/featured-videos/Haiti-missionaries-speak-out-Lila-Foree-81772152.html)

There's so much in these interviews that I was hearing for the first time, it filled in a lot of blanks and helped me discuss the experience with her better. I'm really just beginning to truly realize the depth of the horror that she's survived and that this will forever change her. :guilty:

The thing that strikes me the most is that there were an astounding number of coincidences and and unexplainable luck that led to the safe return of most of this group: The "backpack man" who asked if they needed help and happened to have generator and special excavating equipment in particular. I do not know how they were so lucky or so blessed, but I am very thankful that they were.

We continue to pray for and mourn Jean, for the people of Haiti, and for the emotional and physical healing of our friends and family who shared this experience.

What remarkable people, the interviews not only showed the horror they lived through, but the inner strength they each have.

They definitely had angels watching over them....the backpack man, who just happened to be part of a mine rescue team.

Is your mother past any physical hurdles and into the healing phase yet?

WebmasterKathy
01-16-2010, 09:09 AM
My mom is hurt, but the injuries seem to be tissue damage to muscle. Lots of bruising from the crush, cuts and scrapes. The mental part is just starting to bubble up.

This morning, she's telling me about how her interpreter Joseph sat and held her hand right after the collapse, telling her we would not leave her but that he had to find her help. She is heartbroken about these people, she loves the Haitians she's worked with and goes on and on about how sweet and loving and caring they are.

She wants to be there helping them now, and is in turmoil that she cannot be helping them at this point.

The death of their teammate is a crushing blow to all of them. Mom's talking this morning about Jean and how much she was enjoying this trip and already talking about coming back. Just before the quake, Mom said that she was talking with Jean and Karen, and remembers saying "Have you ever had a day at work when you could help and make this many people happy?" They were loving this work and the people they were dealing with.

Sharing this here has been a great support to me, and I am hoping that it will help me keep the timeline and emotions documented in a way that I can share with her as we piece this back together.

I read of another Methodist death. He was from a different group?

United Methodist Relief Executive Dies Before Rescue from Hotel Ruins in Haiti

New York, NY, Jan. 16, 2010 - The Rev. Dr. Sam Dixon, head of the humanitarian relief agency of The United Methodist Church, died before he could be rescued from the rubble of a hotel destroyed by the earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12.

The executive officer of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) was part of a group of mission and relief specialists trapped by the collapse of the Hotel Montana. Other persons in the group of five, including two more from the General Board of Global Ministries, were rescued and were back in the US by the morning of January 16. The group was pinned down for more than 55 hours.

My good wishes and prayers go to the members of your mom's group and to the back pack man and the people who worked with him to help the missionaries. I am sorry to hear about Jean. My thoughts will be with the other members over the next days and months and years as they recover, both physically and mentally. Penny

We got news last night that Dr. Fish and Jean have arrived home.

Having them back in Dallas is a relief, although a very bittersweet one. Mom remains very upset about Jean's death, and we cry a lot about that. Mom wants desperately to see the team and to be able to say goodbye to Jean and to talk with Jean's husband David and their family about their trip and the discussions they were having on Tuesday just before the quake. Her services will be later this week... I don't really have words to express the thoughts, fears, and need around thinking of that day and how to support the Haiti team as well as Jean's family through that.

There is good news about Dr. Fish. This wonderful man refused to be separated from Jean through this entire event, despite his own injuries. He stayed with her from the time they rescued her from the rubble (he had also been trapped, but must have been one of the first dug out), through transport throughout Haiti, to evacuation to Guadaloupe and surgery, and escorted her body back home. The good news is that he is home and his injuries are limited to a cracked sternum. Painful and a somewhat major injury in a world of normal circumstances, but seems like nothing given current the current events.

Mom has been able to talk with many of the team, the tears come and go, the bruises are starting to heal, she's walking without needing to lean heavily on anyone. She continues to recuperate at my house, she slept well last night, and her sister is here visiting.

Dr. Fish sounds like a great person.

Kathy, I finally had the chance to sit down and watch the interviews in their entirety. I cried though all of them. Sometimes people ask where God is in a disaster and in this case God was there in the form of a mine specialist.

These stories are so inspirational. If any thing good can come from this perhaps it is that the world cannot ignore Haiti anymore. That we can help them rebuild the country and they can be stronger then ever.

Random thoughts:

Mom has so much love and feels so much pain for the people of Haiti. She talks over and over about how loving and wonderful the people there are and how much they did to help our team during this crisis, even when their own families were experiencing the same trouble and heartbreak. It's killing her to not be able to be there to help them.

The real details of the her entrapment and rescue come out bit by bit. This morning, she told me she was covered in rubble and then there was a huge slab of concrete about twice the size of my large breakfast table on top of that. As people came to try to help her, they had to step on that large concrete slab that laid on her to get to her, adding to the compression and fear and pain.

She was trapped for about three hours, and she says she screamed and screamed for help. She was free from the chest up, and she was determined to be sure that she was heard...

She says that a large group of men, she believes to be mostly Sri Lankan UN troops as well as local Haitians, worked and worked and were somehow able to lift that huge slab of concrete enough that they were able to slide her from beneath it.

Not sure what time the "backpack man" returned to the clinic with his excavation equipment, but his crew extracted Karen Gardner and Jean Arnwine, who were completely covered in rubble and huge solid slabs of concrete.

Nancy Rice- Mom- is healing from crushing and twisting and cuts, and somehow has nothing broken

Karen Gardner- has an injured and crushed arm, we don't know yet what kind of permanent damage she may be facing, and a severe puncture wound on her leg. She sounds strong and positive on the phone.

Jean Arnwine- our hearts are breaking for her. She suffered internal injuries in the collapse, but was talking and interacting with the team for the next couple of nights. They cared for her the best they could in nightmare conditions, but they simply had no tools to diagnose nor ability to get her to a surgeon in time. She passed away in surgery on Friday morning on the island of Guadaloupe, where she was flown by a French medical transport, I believe.

Dr. Kenneth Foree, leader of the team and long time spearhead of this program- His hand was trapped, and he's healing. As a surgeon, he's determined to get that fixed so he can get back to work helping these people rebuild.

Dr. Gary Fish- He stayed with Jean from the initial injury until he escorted her home last night. It was thought he had possible broken ribs, doctors this morning found that he has a cracked sternum. He says "it's nothing", and he sounded strong on the phone, only worried about the condition of the team members. As Dr. Fish was being checked out in the hospital in Dallas, we learned that his father passed away this morning, he called Mom from the car on his way to bury his father.

The others: Alex Paz, Marilyn French, Lila Foree, Katy, Claire, Joel Fish, Dr. Lehmann- no physical injuries, but amazing stories of strength and bravery during this nightmare. Their lives will be forever changed by this, and I pray that we can help them work through it and be strong.

Thanks for letting me ramble here. Getting this out in words helps me keep it straight.

How Mom's group got to the US:

She had not been able to walk at all, the team thought she had a possible spinal injury. Late Wednesday night, they encountered Dr. Green from Florida at the medical tent near the airport (not sure, but it may be on UN property or have been set up by the UN... the UN is involved somehow, but details about that are still foggy to me)

She is RAVING about this wonderful man.

He told them (her group was 5 people at this point: Nancy Rice, Marilyn French, Karen Gardner, Joel Fish, Alex Paz) that there was a private plane coming in from Florida, bringing a team of 8 doctors the next morning. (That would be Thursday morning). He said that he would get our people on that plane when the doctors arrived and the plane went back to Florida. But Mom would ONLY be able to go if she could sit up, otherwise she'd have to wait for a medical evac plane.

Thursday around noon is when air traffic to the airport was shut down due to gridlock and chaos... they were hours ahead of this, thank goodness.

This man worked with Mom and gave her enough morphine to be sure she was able to board that plane and get to the US. The very posh private plane belongs to some South Florida business man who is very good friends with Dr. Green. How our group connected with this angel is another miracle I'm trying to understand... Our people in Haiti were making all of this happen on their own while injured, out of communication with us and in total chaos.

Mom on MSNBC:

With the private plane sitting on the runway and ready to return to the states, our team is there and scrambling to board and leave. Mom is sitting in the back of a pickup, still not able to walk on her own and flying on morphine.

Hasn't had a bath in days, blood in her hair.

The reporter from MSNBC walks up to her right then and asks if he can talk to her. She tells me that all she thought at that point was that she needed to talk to this man because maybe her kids would see it and know that she was alive- we'd had NO contact with her at this point, and it's Thursday morning.

So she sat in the back of that truck, loopy on morphine, and talked to that man as a way to get a message to us.

Nancy Rice on MSNBC (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/34862154#34862154)

Now she says "The one day of my adult life I'm not wearing my Mary Kay, and that's when they show up with cameras." :)

I've heard from so many friends that they saw this clip on the news and recognized her- kind of surreal.

Kathy, thanks for sharing your Mom's story. Many prayers to the team as they heal and to the family of Jean.

I was watching a new story this am about the history of Haiti. I had no idea. They belonged to the French. The weathly brought slaves from Africa and treated them very badly. The slaves outnumbered the French and they revolted. France left, but told the new gov't they needed to pay a massive amt of money for their "freedom". (This was in the 1800's.) The debt was reduced but still not paid off until the mid 1940's. This, plus corrupt govt's never gave the country a chance to "take off" or "build".

Update: Photos from Haiti

I'm seeing a few photos of Mom's group in Haiti for the first time. The first few photos are from before the quake, and you can see how happy the team is to be there. My mom is in the photo of the inside of the clinic.

The later photos are after the quake, with the injured (including Mom) on stretchers and mattresses on the ground, and with what I'm guessing are UN personnel around them... I'll show her these photos tomorrow, but I don't know how she'll react. :guilty:

definitely were some angels watching over them, like you said, all the things that just fell into place to rescue them and get them home.....:cloud9::angel:

I know it is a long road to recovery, probably much more so emotionally and mentally than physically. Those wounds will remain for a long time. I am so glad you are able to be with your mom and help her through this. It is incredible work these folks do over there. Yes... we've had to focus first on the physical healing. She's been seen in the ER and scanned, but her doctor just moved out of town. I have a call in with my doctor's office, pleading for them to take her and see her this morning (they're not taking new patients.)

The emotional healing's going to be a long road.

And then there are all the mundane details we have to handle. Her credit cards, ATM card, checkbook, passport, drivers license, insurance ID, cell phone (with all of her phone numbers saved.), etc. are all back in in the rubble. Losing those things is making day-to-day needs a little more complicated, but it's nothing in the big picture, of course.

I was watching a new story this am about the history of Haiti. I had no idea...

this is exactly why this catastrophe is so particularly tragic. If the quake had centered on any other Caribbean island, or on the other side of Haiti where the Dominican Republic is, or heck even just farther from Port-au-Prince and more into the countryside, the damage and devastation would have been *much* less.

Kathy, thank you so much for sharing this with us. It's a privilege to hear the stories of these good people. So few of us would have the courage and selflessness to go so far from home to give medical care to people who need it so desperately....and then, to have suffered such pain and loss, it's just unfathomable.

I know your mom and her friends have much healing to do after their ordeal, but I hope they can take great comfort from the knowledge that while they were in Haiti, they helped more people in more tangible ways than most of us will in a lifetime. I'm sure the love they have for the people they met in Haiti is returned a thousandfold.

Your mom is a great lady; you must be so proud. I hope the service for Jean tomorrow brings some small measure of peace to your mom and the rest of her team.

Dr. Barth Green is the angel who arranged for my mom and 4 of her teammates to evacuate Haiti on a private plane on Thursday afternoon.

He co-founded an organization called Project Medishare (http://www.projectmedishare.org) that has been doing AMAZING medical work in Haiti for several years. There's a lot of information on their website about the rescue efforts and progress, including many, many photos they've taken in Haiti since the earthquake. Be careful- some are hard to look at.

That was a long and exhausting day for her, but very healing.

The whole team was there together except for one Dr. who lives in San Antonio. They had time together in a private room before the service, and there were LOTS of hugs and tears while they caught up with one another.

Jean's service was beautiful and uplifting. Her husband David spoke- he is such a strong, gracious and absolutely positive man! He truly did celebrate her, and made every one of us feel that we knew her personally and that he loved us.

The church (Highland Park United Methodist in Dallas) has been really wonderful to the team, giving them all kinds of support and helping with absolutely anything they can to make this easier for them. There are about 6 people at the church who have been supporting and communicating with us, and probably a lot more supporting them behind the scenes. From counseling, shielding the team from the media, arranging and providing for private places for them to meet and heal, to lots of little details, they've been great.

Again, it was a difficult day but very healing.

Thank you for thinking of her. If she knew how many people out there have been praying for her, she'd be shocked! :)

She shouldn't be shocked Kathy. I'm a believer that what you put out into the universe comes back to you ten-fold and your mom, Jean and the team certainly have been inspiring.

As my girls get older, I more and more feel the call to do some kind of mission and right now I feel like running, not walking, straight to some place like Haiti.

My 8 year old's small school of 200 kids raised $450 today for Haiti...and that was after having two storm days in a row so no reminders went home. They decided to do it again Monday and after they were told our government is doubling donations she informed me we're doubling what we gave today too :rotfl:

When your mom's back can handle it give her a big hug from her "neighbor" to the north for me!

Wow- that's wonderful! You should be very proud. :)

Although Haiti's suffering the nightmare of the earthquake now, they will need lots of help tomorrow, next year, and the year after that.

We all haved a strong desire to be there today. But looking at longer-term ways to help through donations and support of educational and medical charities after the earthquake fades from the headlines is the best way most of us can help our neighbors to the south.

Bless your kiddo and her classmates, give her a great big hug and tell her it's from my mom Nancy, who loves the people of Haiti and will be very proud of her! (She's sitting beside me and crying while watching the "Hope for Haiti Now" benefit on television.)

This is where Mom was trapped, just behind the door on the left side of this photo. She had a large part of the roof on top of her, and the rescuers had to squeeze past that door that was jammed open and walk on the concrete that was on top of her...

The Rev. Ralph Denizard describes how a massive earthquake destroyed the Haiti Eye Clinic in Petit-Goâve, Haiti. United Methodist volunteer Jean Arnwine of Dallas died of injuries she received in the collapse. A UMNS photo by Mike DuBose.

The hole in the wall on the right side of the door goes into another room, and is how rescuers got to two of her teammates (Jean and Karen).

Mom's getting better every day!

She's been staying at my house since she got home (I'm set up with a first floor guest room with a private bath and walk-in shower; she lives in a 3rd floor apartment.)

Walking is difficult and painful, but she had a LOT of deep bruising and crush injuries on her back and legs. That's healing, slowly. Lots of doctor visits, lots of heating pads and gentle massage. :) She LOVES hot showers.

She's in great spirits, very sassy. The phone never stops ringing, and we've had lots of visitors and made a few outings. Things are slowly getting back to normal. We still have some tears each day, but there's more sunshine in between those episodes. :)

So glad to heat that sunshine is replacing the tears.. It is a long process but with you next to her, your mom will make it!!

Lots of hugs to you both!

How wonderful that you found the "backpack" man. To be able to say thank you (if only to his wife) must be good therapy for your mom. I took my mom to get her hair done today (she's 82 and in wheelchair & her 3 kids take turns taking her to the hair dresser on Saturday). She asked after your Mom and when she heard you found the "backpack" man she was so happy for your family. She said to tell you we will continue to keep you and yours in our hearts and prayers. It is so sad to hear how the Haitian people are getting by.

I know that many schools here in Quebec are having fundraisers to send money. Our dd's hs raised $6,739.00. They had hoped for $5,000.00.
So many schools here are raising money. My dh's company was collecting clothes for the many people who will be arriving here in the coming weeks. They will all need winter clothing- coats, boots, hats etc. Many people have donated to charities on their own.

If everyone helps a bit........it will make things a bit easier.

Hope you Mom is feeling better every day.

Today is 3 weeks since the earthquake, and Mom has healed enough to go home. She's been at my house since she got home, but packed her little bag and her shiny new walker and went back to her own place today. One more step toward normal!

She wasn't crazy about the walker idea, since that's for "old people". But she's still having a good deal of trouble walking and keeping her balance. It's getting better every day, but she still needs a little help. Maybe we'll festoon it with streamers and flags. Heck- maybe some battery powered Christmas lights, a la Bawb!!!
