View Full Version : 1,353 MILES! "Get Your Motor Runnin'" or "Leaving on a Jet Plane"?

All of a sudden, last night, I was making ADRs for a trip that suddenly materialized out of thin air! :confused3
Wigd had been obsessing over a spring break trip and kept asking if I thought we could go. I had been checking flights for months and nothing was coming up at a price I thought was acceptable. You see, living in the air capital of the world does not mean we have cheap, or even decent, airfare. In fact, if we can get round trip flights under $350, we consider ourselves blessed!
Nothing was coming up under $400 :sad1: and that was leaving at 5:00 in the afternoon, arriving at Orlando at midnight, and departing Orlando at 6:00 in the morning on our last day. Leaving Wichita sooner and departing Orlando later pumped the ticket price up to over $500! :scared1:
As we were sitting at a basketball game on Saturday morning, Wigd decided to call DVC to "just see" what was available. ;) I continued watching the game and knew that "just see" meant something would be booked. It was kind of like a parent saying "maybe" and the child knows it means "YES!" :rotfl2:
When she got back, I asked where we were staying and she gave me the options. She had booked SSR in a studio but said we had points and the availability for a 1BR at Boardwalk. (Why do two adults need a 1BR?) I now had 10 seconds to decide if "we" wanted the 1BR. Why did she even ask? Why not simply book that one in the first place? Out she ran to make a return call to DVC to snatch up the 1BR.
As luck would have it :rolleyes1, the 1BR was still available. We just returned from the World 12 days ago, and we would be going again at the end of May for a two week park/cruise/park stay. Now we were going back in 63 days! :scared1:
The question of the moment is, how are we getting there and back? I have always wanted to drive but looking at the miles and time does not make me :). So many variables.....When do we leave? Do we try to drive straight through? If we choose to spend the night on the road, where do we stop? How many routes should we consider in case of those infamous spring snowstorms? Do we stay on 4 lane highways or venture off to some 2 lane byways? How many books on tape will I need to check out? But most importantly, will we be speaking pleasantly , or at all , to each other by the time we get to the Boardwalk? :confused3

This is too cute! My dh does the same thing to me regarding disney.

We have the same issue with airfare here. If I can find a flight below $300 I feel like I've done something! Dallas is just a little over 2 1/2 hrs from us though so we sometimes drive down and fly out of DFW where airfares tend to be quite a bit cheaper at times.

Those airfares are ridiculous. How long is the flight? And, more importantly, how long is the drive? I could NEVER drive from NYC. I'd be a lunatic by the time we arrived. Is there a way you can drive to another city for a cheaper flight?

I've been checking March flights faithfully, as well. They went from $94 and $105 to over $200 this week. We used to drive all the time, but boy, have we gotten spoiled to flying now! We're there in under two hours and ready to party!
If you come anywhere near Nashville, let us know!
I'm glad Wigd gets her spring trip. It's such a nice treat at the end of a dreary winter. It will make you feel so alive and happy. I love going in the spring! If I had a dime to my name, I'd eek out at least one or two (or three :)) nights myself. But alas, I do not have a dime, and I don't anticipate being where I need to be financially until probably the day before we leave - June 30 - for the summer trip.
I vote for a live cam that goes everywhere with you...yeah, that would be very nice! :thumbsup2

The Wave is so good. I had a wonderful filet and can't wait to eat there again in May. Oh and your ADRs are:
1) Im going to agree with Raglan Road even though it was the only one I didn't recognize. But I di think it looks like a pub so I'll agree.
2) Yachtsman Steak House. Funny how the Yacht club and the Beach Club have totally different vibes even though they're basically the same resort.
3)The Wave- I really want to try this place!
4) Brown Derby- I had a yummy appetizer here even though I still haven't tried that Cobb salad.
5) Les Chefs- yummy French onion soup and Remy is SO freakin' cute!

Heck, 1353 miles? That's not so bad! Do you have the time to drive? That's always the sticking point for me. I don't want to use 4 days of my vacation in the car. We're about 1580 miles from WDW and we usually take 24 -26 hours driving time to get there. We drove straight through in December. I've already told DH, next trip, we have to fly!!!
I bet it's tough to find any kind of good deal for spring break time.
The ADRs look awesome!! Some of those I'd like to try!

Yes, DVC members can do the Dining Plan. We used the plan over Christmas but will not on Spring Break. We have a Tables in Wonderland card that we will use instead.

I would entertain them with Benadryl....:rotfl2:
Unfortunately that does not seem to knock mine out. The plan at this point is to let Doug go to bed say 7, me keep the wild women up and then to pull out early... way early and let them sleep in the car. We even made reservations for our drive night already. Hannah figures she can watch all three High School Musicals at least twice on the way down. Needless to say we will be thankful for our DVD player in van and borrow a single one too.
I can attest to the power of Benedryl -- who can forget the 2008 trip when Charles took Benedryl to help him sleep, and he fell asleep on the stranger's shoulder on the Great Movie Ride. :lmao::rotfl::rotfl2:
That made me cry... too funny. My dad took a Tylenol PM (my mom is a terrible sleeper and takes them on trips) instead of a Tylenol in 2005 in Disney. He really remembered nothing we did during our EPCOT Day. He thought he was dying or something... a foggy haze of a day, until we got back to Riverside and he realized what he had done.

I was thinking with a stop in each of those places to see the highlights, you'd never get to Disney World! Are you sure you don't want to drive to Nashville, snag a $94 flight, and be there in less than two hours? I know you'd have to give up skateboarding in Georgia, but it could be worth it.

I lived in Alabama for 10 years and it is a LONG drive to Florida from Birmingham alone. That south part of Alabama is COUNTRY!!!

Yikes! $500 doesn't sound like a sale to me either. I wonder how high they were before their "sale".
Are you sure you didn't post a picture of our airport? :lmao: Our hometown airport is very small also. We love it! I think we only have about 4 gates working at any given time. Do you usually fly out from your hometown? DH is one that would rather pay a little more and not have to drive home when he gets back from vacation.
Great ADRs. We have only been to the Derby. How many of these will be new to you guys?
That looks like our airport too! Only we don't have 4 gates working at any given time.:rotfl2: That's OK though, it's easy to get in and out of and the lines aren't like MCO! We have to drive 2 hours to fly SW which we do sometimes when we get a good rate. Lately we've been driving, which is only about 10 hours for us. Flying is becoming difficult these days with $$$ having to pay to check bags and such. I do like to fly though.
I usually just lurk on the boards. I'm coming over from Memom's Tr. I love your pics.

Now, as for the "should Shocker attempt" poll, I will vote yes, with some caveats:
You must stop if when you feel full and/or starting to feel sick; if you become sick you must insist Wigd go to the parks without you and write Wigd was right and I was wrong 1,000x on the DIS (copy/paste not allowed) and finally since this steak is $85 :scared1: that entitles Wigd to some guilt free souvenir shopping. :upsidedow

Yes, Wigd, solo time in the parks might just be a wonderful thing!
Attempting to eat that much steak in one sitting would unleash a chain of events of cataclysmic proportions.
Watch...
You eat 48 ounces of steak.
You begin to feel ill.
You insist on heading back to the hotel room.
You writhe in pain like Meg Ryan in French Kiss after she has eaten all that cheese.
Wigd gets sick and tired of listening to your moaning when you should have known better in the first place.
She decides to leave and head to Downtown Disney by herself.
With the Disney Visa.
She returns, seemingly empty-handed, five hours later.
The next day, the packages arrive for pick up.
Wigd has single-handedly bought out the entire World of Disney.

How far will we drive? OKC? Tulsa? DFW? KC? StL? Springfield/Branson? Little Rock? Fayetteville? Memphis? Knoxville? Shreveport? New Orleans? Atlanta?
I continually checked airfare from each of these cities simply to cut the drive short.
I was shocked :scared1: today when I received an email about a possible fare from one of these cities!
We will be driving about 260 miles to the east/southeast and then boarding an Airtran non-stop flight to Orlando! We have never flown non-stop!

I mean, I thought maybe someday you would come and visit us at Pop, maybe, but I never thought you'd be staying there. As many times as we have stayed, I should have 'peeps' that can take care of you - give you the deluxe Pop room and all.

I do think you have the right to eat the steak. I like Jackie's idea that Anita gets to go shopping while you writhe in pain, if in fact that happens and at a minimum would suggest that she is additional entitled to the souvie of her choice worth an equal dollar amount of the price of the steak on top of anything else she might want.

We are doing both in July, but only The Bistro will be new, and the boys will be at the sand dollar club or whatever it is called :rotfl: I think the menu is fab at Cali Grill....
We do have the Cali Grill scheduled for the summer and we are very excited about having dinner there for Wishes!
I am going to cast my vote for Cali Grill!
Thanks for the input!
Another vote for Cali Grill!
Thanks for voting!
