Does anyone know whether there are coffee makers in the category 7 (navigator's veranda) rooms? I have to have my dark roast Starbucks in the morning! Absent the coffee maker, I suppose I could bring a little one-cup drip and filters...can you get room service to deliver hot water in the morning?

Three weeks to go to our 3 day WDW, 4 day Wonder!

There are no coffee makers in the rooms but you could call room service for hot water.

I am a morning person and enjoyed going up on deck every morning to get my coffee - made tea occasionally. It is so peaceful up on deck 9 in the early morning. The danish and cinnamon rolls are great too. Room Service is available too.

Along the same line, how is the coffee? We enjoy ours very dark and very strong. I know not all others would concur. Is there a choice? Do we need to plan on bringing our own?

I am pretty picky about my coffee, and generally don't like the coffee that is served in even the best hotels and resorts. I like dark roast, strong or even not so strong, it just has to be dark roast arabica coffee. French Roast or Dark Roast is about as close as I've found in places other than Starbucks, Seattle's Best, etc., but you can't even get that most of the time in resorts. Therefore, I prefer to bring my own when traveling.

The last time I did the Disney Land/Sea was in the fall of 2000, and I didn't like the coffee at that time. I don't know if they have changed since then, but I don't mind bringing my own as long as I can get the hot water from Room Service.

I'm sure this must strike some as kind of silly, but frankly I'm surprised it hasn't been raised before, given how ubiquitous Starbucks is in the US. However, this board is great.

Fair. I think life is too short to drink bad beer or bad coffee... and I was not particularly impressed by the coffee or the orange juice onboard. The improvement in quality in the coffee and orange juice at the Palo Brunch are both good reasons to do the Palo Brunch.

The orange juice on board is certainly not fresh squeezed (except maybe Palo). In the dining rooms I always have them mix O.J. and cranberry and it goes down much easier.

Is the hot water really hot enough to make coffee? This sounds like one of the more important tips I've found on this board. Good coffee is, well, one of our necessities of life.

Are you being "a sea fish" when you say that?

I think maybe you should add coffee maker to your packing list cuz the hot water from room service is great for tea but those bags have to soak a while!!! :p

I know you're teasing, but is there a place for a coffee maker?

I'll admit it - I'm addicted to coffee! :D I got a 4 cup coffee maker from Amazon for about $12. My MIL and I plan on sitting on our verandah and enjoying a cup of "real" coffee, not the Nescafe on board. I figure we'll be going to bed late and getting up early, so we're gonna need a boost!

My nirvana would be a starbucks outlet on DCL. How is the coffee in Common Grounds? Maybe we could crash it?

Delighted to know we're not the only ones who'd be miserable without a decent cup of coffee. I'm looking for a compact coffeemaker as we speak.

Thanks for the great replies to my post. I've made coffee before with tea temperature water and while not great it is still more drinkable than the other stuff.

However, I'm mulling over bringing a coffee maker. I seem to recall reading a suggestion about bringing extension cords as the outlets are few and far between, so would assume that applies in this case as well, given how short the cords are.

Extension cords make a lot of sense. Thanks for the reminder. They're easy enough to pack. I'm really starting to look forward to coffee on the veranda.

I went through Starbucks withdrawl until I discovered that the bars make a very nice caffe mocha - starting at 9am - a bit late for me.

Its close - I asked for a double shot and whipped cream. It is the closest thing on the high seas!

For those of you who love Starbucks coffee at home - the Starbucks coffee maker is outstanding. The steel carafe keeps the coffee hot and fresh for hours. They just came out with a personal size unit.

We took our big one to Hilton Head -

I have to tell all of you that after our first Disney Magic cruise, when asked how the food/drink was, I emphatically answered that the coffee was THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD! I asked what kind it was and was told only that it was Columbian. After I commented one evening after dinner that I LOVED the coffee, the following morning our server was pouring a cup for me before I even sat in my chair! It brightened my morning and thrilled me after dinner! Whereas we ALWAYS take our own coffee along with us when we are in hotels, we didn't on the ship, as we didn't think they would have a coffee maker in the cabins.

I'll tell you what I WAS disappointed in -- I am an avid iced tea drinker and the iced tea was TERRIBLE! It was just the kind you get in the soda dispensing machines (Nestea) and very disappointing. I was hoping for freshed brewed. So on our last Disney Magic Cruise, I mentioned this and our server found a solution. He brought me the tea bag assortment box and I selected a Lemon Zinger and he brought me the hot water and a glass with ice and I "brewed" my own at every meal. It was WONDERFUL! I didn't even have to ask -- he was right there with it every time.

My wife also can't go anywhere without her Starbucks Whole Coffee,so I found this one at Amazon.com and she is happy and awake on trips plus I got her a small grinder to complete the set. Here is the link to the coffee maker.

There would be almost no room for a coffee maker unless you were in a suite. While the DCL cabins are above average in size, they are not as big as a standard motel room. I have been reading this thread wondering where you folks would put this coffee maker. Most of the Disboarders take an over the door shoe holder so they will have enough room for storing necessary items they take.
I love good strong coffee and really have never thought DCL coffee was all that bad.
FOJMO - You are correct. That iced tea is nasty. You can be arrested in SC for trying to pass that colored water off as tea.
Dave - Loved the sink.

Have a great day all. I am off for my third cup of the morning.

My recollection is that there is sufficient space on the desk. Presumably if you were able to fit it in your suitcase to bring it, you should be able to put it back in your suitcase to store it, if you don't want to leave it out.

Dave's website has a discussion on extension cords and electrical outlets at the following link.

http://www.dcltribute.com/faq/poweroutlets.htm

IMO, the coffee on the ship is great if you are a fan of the kind of coffee served at, for example, Dunkin' Donuts (nothing wrong with that - I know there are people who can't live without it!). If, on the other hand, you prefer dark roast coffee similar to Starbucks, you will be disappointed. Two completely different tastes.

If it is against the rules to bring an iron, why would it not be wrong to bring a coffee maker. They both have heaters rated at about 1500 watts which is the maximum for 115VAC. Would the fire hazard not be about the same. Just thinking out loud here.

By the way, my wife thought the desk was a vanity and used it for such. That's the reason I did not see room for a coffee maker.

It's a shame that cruisers have to think about bringing a coffee maker along to get a decent cup of coffee on board.

Now I love Disney, but this is not the first time that Disney's corporate sponsorship with Nestle/Carnation has irked me. :(

I will be sure to note on my comment card that they should have more coffee alternatives to Nescafe. It's bad enough that Nestle's corporate marketing policies have led to thousands boycotting them worldwide, but Nescafe is a very mediocre coffee!

Sorry folks, but life is too short. I think that for one week I can do without my Starbucks and simply enjoy a weak, tasteless cup of Joe or instant orange juice. Leave the coffee makers at home and save space for all those gifts you will be bringing back for the loved ones left behind.

Dave's wonderful kitchen sink visual notwithstanding, I was wondering when all of you naysayers were going to come out of the woodwork and give me a hard time about this...

I'll definitely be bringing my Starbucks - haven't yet decided about the coffee maker. We'll see how much room I have.

Re: Nestle/Carnation - one of the ways Disney makes money is by leveraging their purchasing volume to negotiate agreements with big vendors, which reduces their costs significantly. I would imagine Nestle has a more upscale coffee product, however, and we should encourage Disney to make it available (I wouldn't mind paying extra for it, similar to paying for alcoholic drinks) in those comment cards we fill out at the end of the cruise. Maybe they could add it in time for DisneySlave!

For those who have commented that life is too short, etc., we all have our own priorities and make our own choices. Life IS too short. I'm sure there are those who wouldn't want to have to go without alcohol for a whole week!

MarkRG

And I was holding back. :)

Do without alcohol? Easily! Don't drink alcoholic products, find just the odor of beer repulsive. Don't smoke, or other substances. Yes, I am very much an overgrown boy scout. And, honestly have all but eliminated soda products out of my diet too, mostly due to my trips away from home.

But what I said was, that a vacation is a time to leave your life at home for a time. I am a major electronics nut, and, I find it hard to leave the electronic stuff behind, but now I do. You miss out on really relaxing and experiencing the trip if you have to stop and maintain habits tied to the life you have at home. Explore and try new ones, instead of looking at it as Disney is forcing you to do something. :/

Okay, folks, this is beginning to get a little ugly and I'm not sure why.

I fall into the ranks of the folks who prefer good coffee. As I said earlier in this thread and perhaps in another thread, I think the coffee onboard is a little disappointing. And as far as the "life is too short" references... I've said that life is too short to drink bad beer or bad coffee. That being said, would I haul a coffee maker with me in order to get my Starbucks fix? No... that's why I made the joke about the kitchen sink. But joking aside... I don't see any reason to criticize somebody who decides that it's personally worthwhile to bring their coffeemaker. If good coffee is that important to them, then it would be worthwhile for them.

So... what more could be said?

Wow! I had no idea people would object to the idea of arranging for one's own coffee. I've read volumes on bringing soft drinks, beer, and wine. I've enjoyed tips on what to bring and what's great onboard. Sorry it offends some.

Just an idea for those of you who want to bring coffeemakers, there is plenty of room on the desk and we brought one of the powerstrips with us so we had plenty of room to plug things into it. Not being a coffee drinker I wouldn't know about the taste but being a diet Coke addict I know what I would do for my fix first thing in the morning, I packed my own and brought it with me, so I guess that's about the same as needing your coffee fix. Go ahead and bring the coffeemaker and enjoy your vacation!!;) :) :smooth:

I've given some more thought to the coffee maker thing. While I plan to bring good coffee with me, I bet a serious coffee maker isn't a necessity. A little immersion-style water heater will take almost no space and could easily be used to heat water to drip coffee. :smooth: :smooth:

Remember that you can get hot water (hot enough to make tea or hot chocolate) at the Deck 9 beverage station.
