Here are copies of many but not all of the posts from September 11th. Some aren't in order because of dropped threads & picked up ones. I'll pick up where I left off as I can. Hope this works.

World Trade Center Plane Crash
A plane crashed into the World Trade Center. OMG...breaking news.

Posted by Dan Murphy on 09-11-2001 01:58 PM:
Watching on TV. This is an AWFUL thing to happen. God bless the people in it.

Posted by dizneegirl on 09-11-2001 01:58 PM:
Goodness... there are billows of black smoke pouring out the top of the tower, and a huge hole in the side of the building (about 3/4 the way up). They think it was a smaller plane, possibly private.

I hope there weren't too many injuries/fatalities... thank goodness it was before nine, maybe not everyone was at work yet.

Posted by MaryAnnDVC on 09-11-2001 01:58 PM:
How horrible. It's on the Today Show right now.

Posted by Baboo on 09-11-2001 02:05 PM:
A second plane just crashed in too!

Posted by mickey65 on 09-11-2001 02:05 PM:
I just saw it on the news here too. Prayers to all involved.

Posted by PandyPaws on 09-11-2001 02:05 PM:
OMG!!!

I am watching right now...there are still explosions happening. This is absolutely horrible!!

Posted by Obi-Wan Pinobi on 09-11-2001 02:06 PM:
OMG another plane just hit the other one building!!!!!!

Posted by PandyPaws on 09-11-2001 02:06 PM:
Holy Moly...the explosion was in the other building..nothingto do with the plane crash...culd thi be terrorism??

Posted by jennymouse on 09-11-2001 02:07 PM:
Wow, I watched Today show until about a half hour ago......what was that about a second plane?

Posted by MaryAnnDVC on 09-11-2001 02:07 PM:
Oh God, this has to be terrorism! Please, everyone, start praying.

Posted by Rajah on 09-11-2001 02:08 PM:
That's the first thought that came to my mind, Pandy... a terrorist attack. Planes just crash into buildings so rarely that it being the World Trade Center is awfully suspicious, especially with a second plane following.

Posted by MaryAnnDVC on 09-11-2001 02:08 PM:
The second explosion was definitely a plane...possibly a 727! They showed it fly into the building. I feel sick.

Posted by dizneegirl on 09-11-2001 02:08 PM:
A second plane flew into the second tower, about half way down.

The eyewitnesses are saying it looked deliberate.

Posted by becka on 09-11-2001 02:11 PM:
This is terrible!

Saying a quick prayer for all involved.....

Posted by Dan Murphy on 09-11-2001 02:11 PM:
All I can say is God help those innocent people. Absolutely awful. I can't belive what I have been seeing. Please pray for these people.

Posted by Quentin Disney on 09-11-2001 02:14 PM:
I am speechless. I feel so terrible about this incident.

Posted by MaryAnnDVC on 09-11-2001 02:14 PM:
They're saying it's a 737. And the towers are leaning.

Posted by RhondaS on 09-11-2001 02:16 PM:
Heaven help them all. This is incredibly tragic.

Posted by RhondaS on 09-11-2001 02:17 PM:
Hijackings? This is so horrible. I cannot believe this.

Posted by MaryAnnDVC on 09-11-2001 02:18 PM:
They're saying now that possibly the first plane was a hijacked American Airlines plane, and the second plane was possibly hijacked as well.

Posted by tiggerlover on 09-11-2001 02:19 PM:
What an awful, awful thing! My prayers go out to all involved.

I am beyond frustrated, I can't access CNN or NBC or even Yahoo news. Please, please if anyone gets any more information let us know. We do not have TV access here at work.

Posted by Robinrs on 09-11-2001 02:20 PM:
This is horrible. Our news station is going crazy.

Pray for my hometown.

Posted by Patrick IL. on 09-11-2001 02:21 PM:
This is terrible, those poor people above the impact- EMS can not get to them easily

Posted by December99 on 09-11-2001 02:21 PM:
I am listening to our local Chicago radio station and they have CBS in New York cut in so we are getting live on this since I'm at work and can't see a TV. They are saying that the speculation could be terrorism...but the don't know. The day is clear....

These towers are 110 stories high. They are both on fire....they hit 18 minutes apart.

How tragic...this is absolutely horrible!!!!

Posted by TennVolTony on 09-11-2001 02:22 PM:
Pentagon has confirmed this as a terrorist attack. Where is our military? We need fighters in the air around this area........God help these innocent lives.......

Posted by PandyPaws on 09-11-2001 02:27 PM:
This is just absolutely horrible....I am speechless!

Stamford is about 30 miles away...and I can hear helicopters outside

Airports and inbound bridges are closed....

repeatng TVT...where is the military???

Posted by sydally9367 on 09-11-2001 02:27 PM:
I am in NY (not near the city but close) and was sitting on the couch right before Nine and heard huge blasts--thought it was something on the military base I am on--but now realize it was something much much worse. They have put West Point on code red since we are one of the closest Army bases to NYC and since it was a terrorist attack.....saying a prayer for all involved, all families..everyone? How can we make it through yet another Oklahoma City???

Posted by Brisully on 09-11-2001 02:28 PM:
What do you mean military? What are they going to do, shoot down a civilian plane??? This is tragic, but lets not overreact.

Posted by MaryAnnDVC on 09-11-2001 02:32 PM:
Now they're saying one plane was a Boston to LA plane that was hijacked.

Posted by DixieDreamer on 09-11-2001 02:32 PM:
This is just awful. I am signing off to go watch the news.

Posted by sydally9367 on 09-11-2001 02:32 PM:
AOL News ticker has a small story on the WTC tragedy---it has very little details but seeing as no-one can get into any other news sites, this is at least something...

Posted by Obi-Wan Pinobi on 09-11-2001 02:33 PM:
There is nothing the military can do over heavily populated areas like NYC. Imagine what would happen if a jumbo jet was shot down over the city?

Posted by tiggerlover on 09-11-2001 02:33 PM:
December, that would explain why I can't get any information here.

Posted by NHAnn on 09-11-2001 02:40 PM:
OMG
This is so scary ....these images on TV look like eerily like disaster-end-of-civilization movies, but it's real . Those poor people, and the families affected, and the emergency workers. It's overwhelmingly tragic.

Posted by Baboo on 09-11-2001 02:41 PM:
There apparently is a military airplane in the area now. I guess they are hoping that this will scare off any further attacks.

Posted by Blondie on 09-11-2001 02:41 PM:
Watching in horror right now.

Posted by December99 on 09-11-2001 02:41 PM:
They just put the Chicago Police on standby and workers have been given the option to leave the Sears Tower today given the events that have just unfolded in NY. The airports are under a heightened state of security at both O'Hare and Midway.

Posted by MaryAnnDVC on 09-11-2001 02:41 PM:
Possible explosion at the Pentagon? Jim Miklaszewski is at the Pentagon...heard a possible explosion, building shook...security running around...no details.

News from outside the USA
I am managing to get some news from the bbc and Sky News, http://news.bbc.co.uk

Skynews have some awful photographs, and both have video footage, although I can't access it. Might help those with no access to news at the moment,

A Palastinian group has taken claim for the World Trade Center crashes... of course, that isn't confirmed.

There has been an explosion at the Pentagon... huge smoke billows coming out of it.

The White House has been evacuated.

The FAA has halted ALL takeoffs nationwide.

Posted by Baboo on 09-11-2001 02:52 PM:
All flights in the country are now cancelled. White House is being evacuated. There is a bad fire at the Pentagon.

Posted by Baboo on 09-11-2001 02:55 PM:
CNN says that a plane hit the pentagon.

Posted by Obi-Wan Pinobi on 09-11-2001 02:59 PM:
It wouldn't surprise me to learn this is tied to that racism conference the US and Israel walked out on.

Posted by denisenh on 09-11-2001 03:01 PM:
another huge explosion in the second tower....trying to help keeps updates for folks without TV

Posted by December99 on 09-11-2001 03:01 PM:
They are saying that a third plane was headed for NY and possibly this is now the plane that headed for DC after the other two hit NY.

Posted by Baboo on 09-11-2001 03:02 PM:
The second building just collapsed on itself

Posted by Sonya on 09-11-2001 03:02 PM:
One of the buildings just collapsed. OMG

Posted by December99 on 09-11-2001 03:02 PM:
I just heard that a second explosion has gone off on one of the towers....I repeat...a second explosion....now they are saying that one of the towers has collapsed!!!

Posted by Teejay32 on 09-11-2001 03:04 PM:
10am, one of the towers is gone. all gone.

Triage centers being set up...

Posted by MaryAnnDVC on 09-11-2001 03:04 PM:
It does appear to be a plane crash at the Pentagon.

Posted by DisneyHumbug on 09-11-2001 03:09 PM:
I waas able to get thru to my brother on Wall Street - he is 4 blocks away - they are ok, but don't know how they are going to get out of there.

Posted by Baboo on 09-11-2001 03:30 PM:
OMG! The other building just collapsed!

Posted by grunger182 on 09-11-2001 03:37 PM:
Just watching live news pictures from NY as both towers collapse....I send all my prayers to all of you. I'm in the UK but DD has a friend who had recently moved out to live in NY. Keep her in your thoughts too please....so shocking.....its just heartbreaking, all those poor people.

Posted by villainwdw on 09-11-2001 03:39 PM:
I am sure tis is old news....767 out of Boston to LAX....man..that is one big plane!

Posted by dizneegirl on 09-11-2001 03:39 PM:
Both of the twin towers in the World Trade Center have collapsed... they are gone.

A car bomb exploded outside the state department.

And I've heard a report that there has been an explosion in the capital building as well, but am unsure if that's true.

Posted by Angeluk on 09-11-2001 03:41 PM:
They've just said on BBC news that another hi-jacked plane is on its way to washington, being tracked by a military plane...don't know how true that is....God be with all of you.

Posted by Fantasia Girl on 09-11-2001 03:42 PM:

OMG!! This is VERY scary!!

Posted by denisenh on 09-11-2001 03:46 PM:
would the military shoot down a hi jacked jet?? there are 2 missing hijacked planes, I pray for the passengers.

Posted by CarolA on 09-11-2001 03:48 PM:
Peter Jennings indicated that there are 2 missing planes after the planes were grounded. Of course, probably half of what is being reported is rumors.

My local station is saying that a large plane crashed just south of Pittsburg. It was a big plane (but I missed the type!)

Posted by Sandra B. on 09-11-2001 03:48 PM:
OMG - This is horrible! I'm at work and we don't have a tv here, but I'm following the news on the radio (can't get through to the news sites). I'm praying for you, hope you and your loved ones are safe! Can't believe this.....

Posted by Debi on 09-11-2001 03:51 PM:
This is horrible news! {{Hugs}} to everyone in the NY/Washington area. This is so tragic and scary!

Posted by dizneegirl on 09-11-2001 03:54 PM:
A Boeing 767 crashed in Somerset County in Pennsylvania... they don't know that it's related, of course.

Posted by Rajah on 09-11-2001 03:55 PM:
It was also a 767 that crashed into the Pentagon.

What's with all the 767s?

Posted by shep on 09-11-2001 03:55 PM:
How big are the 767's???

Posted by dizneegirl on 09-11-2001 03:57 PM:
Federal Protective Services are reporting that there was NO car bomb at the State building.

Posted by Tiger Fan on 09-11-2001 03:59 PM:
I have been glued to the tv all morning. I did go check on my little one at pre-school. This is so upsetting.

Posted by dizneegirl on 09-11-2001 03:59 PM:
Depending on the configuration, the 767 can seat between 180 and 300 passengers. They're calling it a fairly large plane.

Posted by dizneegirl on 09-11-2001 04:00 PM:
The FBI is now trying to confirm reports from the FAA that a United Airlines plane has crashed in the vicinity of Camp David.

Bush is in flight to Andrews... they're trying to decide where to take him, and what to do with Congress.

Posted by PamOKW on 09-11-2001 02:32 PM:
Yeah BinLaden would be my guess, too but after Oklahoma we have to be sure. And then we have to ACT! These are commercial airliners (must have been hijacked). All NY area airports have been shut down until they know what is going on. They claim they had no intelligence on this attack. Bush is on now. Got to go.

My admiration and respect go out to all our military personnel. We need you now.

The only thing I can compare this to is the feeling that people must have had when they heard about the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Posted by allicat on 09-11-2001 02:33 PM:
Terrorism
Clearly, terrorism! Two planes flew directly into the buildings!!!
I heard on the news(unconfirmed) that 2 American Airlines 757 planes were hijacked from Newark airport!!

My friends husband works right there and thank god is ok. He said there is total chaos and it is raining down burning pieces of paper and other things.

Posted by PamOKW on 09-11-2001 02:33 PM:
Bush confirmed it is a terrorist attack with two aircraft.

Also heard they are putting the emergency plan into effect in NYC evacuating all government buildings. They expect other major cities may follow.

Posted by TennVolTony on 09-11-2001 02:34 PM:

For some reason, the attack on the WTC doesn't scare me. Angers, yes, saddens, yes, scares, no. The attack on the pentagon following right after the attack on the WTC, however, does.

I'm also hearing sirens outside, and it's really starting to make me nervous. If it's a full-blown attack, how long will it be before NASA buildings are a target... what's next? WTC and Pentagon are obvious... White House (which they're already evacuating just to be safe) would be a target... what next?

A Soldier's Prayer(needed today)
DH is in the Army and this prayer remains on my fridge at all times-thought today would be a good day to share----

A Soldier's Prayer

Father in Heaven, I am in need of your embrace.

I have given myself to you for you have known me before my birth and you have loved me from all time.

Now I am called to defend the defenseless, to insure justice for the oppressed and to free those unjustly held captive.

I believe all life is scared and I yearn for the day when "swords will be turned into plowshares"

It is not my desire to bears arms against my brothers and sisters, but evil surrounds the innocent and I must follow my conscience and be willing to face those who seek and destroy the dignity that you have gifted all Men and Women with.

Fill me with your grace that I may never glorify War but strive always to bring about a universal community of love and acceptance.

Watch over my companions, release us from fear and protect us in your love, Amen

Kindly say prayers for servicemembers all over the World today, for families of the soldiers, families involved in all the tragedies today, and for America

Thank you for posting this! I will always remeber that class...when I heard.

A man walked in, and whispered into the teacher's ear. Then left...then he just said "New York City is under attack, they think a terrorist hit into the towers." Mr. Tobin's 3rd Period World Geography Class.

Jenifewr, this is a wonderful task you took upon yourself, again, a look at history, a look at one of the sad days of the United States. And how we, as a family, the DIS family, dealt with it. I scanned these, and will come back to it to read more thoroughly, as well as the threads themselves.

This link will bring anyone to the start of these.

http://disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=33&daysprune=365&sortorder=asc&sortfield=lastpost&perpage=50&pagenumber=111

(The page number is set at 111 on this link, it will change as the board moves along. You will have to adjust as time goes on.)

One thing, the time of the DIS on your pc is not correctly set to a time zone in the US. The starting time of the first one would be 8:55 AM EDT and the last one would be 11.36 AM EDT. The first impact on Tower 1 was at 8:45 AM EDT. Your sequence here is about 2 1/2 hours of threads. Amazing.

Again, thank you.

I wasn't here that day. I had been laid off and was trying real hard to find a job. I was a regular on the Monster board at that time and that's where I heard about it. Then I had to get off the PC because the phone started ringing and ringing...

Oh my. :(

Thanks for the post. It's interesting to see how the DIS reacted.

that is just amazing!

I remember when I went to school that day I felt weird

I woke up,took a shower and decided to wear my new NYC shirt(I refuse to wear that shirt now!)and I remember thinking-something is gonna happen 2day and it's something bad and I remember thinking I need to tell everyone I love that I do love them(I remember watched something 5 years on EXTRA about the WTC bombing and someone said that on there and I've remembered it for the longest)
so I'm sitting in Spanish and between the around the 9 or 10 on the clock-I remember feeling really, really sick like i was gonna throw up..I almost asked to go to the nurse but it passed and I went back to work and then right before the bell ring someone came and told us to put it on CNN and we did and we saw a video of the planes hitting one of the towers and I was like OMG! (and then I realized that the first plane hit around the tiem I felt horrible)
and I still remember the first person I thought of was Snoopy and I was liek omg! her husband
and then the 2nd person I thought of was samster and i totally freaking
I was writing a note to my friend and liek totally shaking...I was SOOO scared

but luckily I went to World History class and we watched it...then we went to Algebra and learned a bit then watched it and all our classes taught us first then let us watch the news(it really helped to calm down everyone) but lots and lots of people left school that day
my friend Rachelle was so emotion...she had the twin towers on her shirt...she was just so out of it..she told me she threw the shirt away after that

oh that day is still scary for me...everytime I think about it I start crying

thanks for doing the post...it was very interesting to read and also very emotional

(sorry my post was so long! I felt like talking! :p)

Do you know where I first heard there was a situation with the first tower? Right here on the DIS. I was doing the morning riddle - saw the original thread at the start of this post... and after reading for a few minutes realized I needed to get the news on.... and fast.

Words cannot communicate how profoundly shook up I was by the unfolding story. Having the DIS as a place to go and talk it out... was priceless in coping with this horrible tragedy.

It was Tuesday, my late day. I was still asleep but DH woke me up before he went to work. I sat in front of the TV just staring. Then I had to go to work but nothing was going on there. We set up a TV in the break room and most of the people would wander in and sit down to watch. We were all in shock. This site and many others like it will always be a legacy. Not sure if that is a good thing or not. I know we don't want to forget. EVER. We never will!!!

Thank you for posting this. I remember when I first heard of the attacks. I was on light duty at work for a back injury and doing a few errands for a supervisor. After the second plane hit the WTC, I immediately called home because I couldn't remember what day my dad was due to fly to L.A .
I spent all day on the phones and on pager systems getting people to come in to send ambulance crews down to NYC. Our company sent 11 crews down. We also sent crews to train stations because we were told that people were coming into CT on trains with injuries. I remember being so afraid all day that my hands were shaking and my heart racing.

I don't know if I'll ever forget. I was DISing and listening to news radio. They broke in to say that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center......probably a general aviation aircraft. I posted a quick thread about it and went to turn on the TV. Sure enough, it was on CNN in a minute or two. I thought the gaping hole in the building was even shaped like a plane. Everyone was saying that it may have been pilot error or the navigation system. Everyone was just talking and staring at it. One person mentioned terrorism and the CNN interviewer said we shouldn't jump to any conclusions. When the second plane hit, they didn't know what it was at first. When they realized what it was, all the broadcasters went silent as the horrible truth was too much to comprehend or comment on. Then the hysteria began.

Such an awful day whose horrors will probably never fade from my memory.

I heard about it on the school bus on the way to school. At first i didn't believe it, but everyone was just sitting in silence on the bus listening to the radio. Then in my 1st per. class we watched it on TV and saw both buildings collapse, it was soo tragic. My prayers go out to all of those who were effected by these acts of terrorism on our country.

I was droping John-Cole off at school and on my way to work when I heard about the first plane. I remember thinking hum a plane hit the building. My first thought was human error and a small plane or maybe someone committing suicide (again a small plane) then when I made it to work the second plane had hit and then the Pentagon. We all just stood and stared at the TV. I remember thinking that I just wanted to go home and be with my family.

My mom came to my work at lunch and she admits to me now that she honestly thought it was the beginning of the end of the world. We left for Disney that Friday and I remember perfect strangers just hugging each other and the feeling of unity. Met a lost of DISers and will never forget. I can remember being in line for Space Mountain with TennTony and Ray Sharpton and talking about what would happen next and if WDW was a possible target.

As soon as I got over the initial shock I ran in here to be with all of you. I kept running from my computer to the tv and back.

I think if the people here weren't family before that terrible day, we became one.

I was at work, and I work for an Audio/Video retailer, so we have radios, stereos, and tvs all over the office. I remember our service techs telling us about the first plane, and then watching in horror as #2 went in. Then the news that the planes had flown out of Logan....

What I do remember is that the president of our company called EVERYONE together at about 11am and basically said, "If you want/need to go home, go" "If you need to stay and be around other people, stay" "I don't want ANYONE going home to sit alone and watch this" He then set up about 20 TVs throughout different common areas in the office.

*phew* it was such a tragic day, and I too, had a hard time reading all of jennymouse's thread.

DS was 9 days old that day. We had just gotten into the car to head up to Lowell, MA and heard it on the radio. We got about a mile from home when I decided to turn around. I was just glad to be with my family that day.

I will NEVER forget that day, but what I remember is the anger, not the sadness. I mean, I get sad, but the anger is so overwhelming that it's almost all I can feel.

DW and I saw United 93 and I got so mad that by the time the passengers are ready to roll I almost jumped out of my seat to join them. If you feel that you can do it, you should watch. DW thought she would be sad, but it made her mad too.

Pixie dust, thanks for bumping up this old thread. I didn't see it the first time around either. It was very emotional for me to read this. Such a horrible tragedy. I was way on the other side of the country from where this happened, but I remember being GLUED to the cable news networks for like 4 weeks afterward. I was a SAHM back then and I would watch it all day long, every day. I went into a kind of depression, and decided I needed to stop watching the news for a few weeks.

Well...I just sobbed reading those posts again and when I found my own, I remember it like yesterday.....the people on the WTC, on the ground and in the planes were perished, but the rescue people to this day still are so affected, emotionally, physically, pyscologicially - I hate Osoma with every fiber of my being. The families of these innocent people mourn for the rest of their lives.

I can remember folding laundry and looked up to the see what the breaking news was...my 4 y/o was home with me and I couldn't look away but I didn't want him to see it either..all day was a struggle with that....then I could not wait to get my 9 y/o off of the school bus, I think I literally dragged her off of the bus step and held her trying not to sob and scare her and she said to me "mom, something really bad is happening, isn't it?" and I coudn't answer her...I couldn't get the words out without frightening her, the school had already made some sort of announcement because parents were jamming the phone lines with calls inquiring about the safety of their kids.

I decided early on to leave her in school so I wouldn't expose her to the media which I wanted to see, but felt she was safe in her environment and she is only 5 minutes away if I wanted get her.

NOW....where is this Evil scum of the earth and WHY can't we find him??????

This is still so hard to think about. And what a NYFD poster here on DIS tells us, he is seeing many young firemen, EMT's, rescue workers of all kinds die now. They are having all kinds of ailments from the toxins, they are dying all the time. We do not hear this on the news. Lets not forget to think of all the people still dying from this day :(

My DS was not even 2 back then and we flew home on September 10th from our first vacation together (Myrtle Beach) and I remember thanking God over and over that we weren't scheduled to fly on 9-11.

I was at work and had walked to the cafeteria for a cup of coffee and there are 15 TV's down there that play CNN, Fox News and ESPN all day. I remember walking through those doors and wondering why in the world everyone was staring at the TV's... then I saw the tears and the look of pure fear on some of the faces and I knew... it was bad, really, really, bad.

I can assure you I've not forgotten
I'll never forget, sitting in bio. It was my freshman year of high school, and we were maybe 2 or 3 weeks into the school year. A gym teacher who was normally very full of life and energetic came flying into the room, white as a ghost and sobbing. She whispered something in my bio teacher's ear. That bio teacher was never caught without a smile on his face; he was the biggest goof known to mankind. He went white, tears slid down his face and he collapsed into his chair. He told us we'd be getting some shaky news in homeroom, and that our lives were about to change forever. The bell rang, we moved onto homeroom, where my teacher had the news on. She was crying. 20 mins later we moved to third period. I had study in the cafeteria. There was a military recruiter there setting up a table for recruiting during lunch. His cell phone rang, he went into the courtyard. Came back in a few minutes later in tears, and just threw everything into his boxes and briefcase and ran out of the caf. A few minutes later they asked us to stand for a moment of silence and they told us that the WTC and Pentagon had all been hit. By the time I got to Civics 4th period, the plane had gone down in Pennsylvania too. We watched tv in every class but last period gym (and lunch). During lunch a girl at my lunch table was called to the office. Her mom was calling to tell her that both her uncle and her cousin were missing, one in the WTC, one in the Pentagon. In gym we went outside and played ultimate frisbee on the fields, with military jets and copters circling overhead. Our school was normally in the flight path of Manchester Airport, but there were no commercial jets despite it being such a clear blue perfect day. I'll never forget that perfect weather, and what a contrast it was to the hell that was that day. When I finally got home, my mom was waiting sobbing. We watched the news all afternoon, just her my sister and me cuddling. That night as I was crawling into bed, we got the call that my great aunt had been on the first plane to hit the WTC.

I will never forget that day. It hit really close to home here. I can still give you a minute by minute descrition of my day here. I remember my Dh calling me at 8:55 a.m. and I was so mad when the phone rang because he just woke up our 4 week old dd who was up all night and finally fell asleep when he called. He asked me if I had the news on and I said no and then told me that a plane had gone into the WTC. He had seen it from his office in Jeresy City. I was still on the phone with him when the second plane hit.

My Aunt was in the building and we could not get in touch with her. The waiting was awful. I can`t imagine the pain families went through when they never heard from families members again. Finally at 3:00 my uncle heard from her and she was fine. There were other people we knew who lost their life that day. One was my Dh good friend.
I can`t belive my dd was 4 weeks old when it happened and I remember saying to her that day What kind of world were you born into! And this August she will be turning 5.

I wasn't here back then either, and the thread didn't have many participation, maybe the boards were so popular back then, so I wanted to reply and to let the new members see it.

Thanks for initially posting this Jenny and thanks to you PixieDust for bumping it up. While we'll never forget, it's nice to be reminded of the rawness of that day. I hope it's bumped back up a couple years from now too, just to remind us all.

We'll more than likely turn into a bunch of blubbering idiots all over again, but we really need to remember.

Thanks for bumping it up. After reading thru it I remember how scary it was that day, not knowing how involved this attack was and what was happening.
We who were on the board at that time were able to help each other try to make sense of it all.

I remember vividly seeing Olena's post just before I headed into a 9AM meeting at work. All of the internet news sites were swamped and we didn't have a working TV at the office, so the DIS was my lifeline to the outside world and the insanity of that day as it unfolded. I was very thankful for the DIS that day.

Wow, thanks! I wasn't a DISer back then, so I wasn't on the board. I was actually heading to a funeral when it came over the radio. I had to wait until I got home to see the TV footage.

God I remember this like it was yesterday. I was driving to work (worked at Target then) and my old Buick didn't have a CD player, just a radio tape deck. I'd turned on the tapedeck so I could put in something to listen to when Kidd Kraddick (local DJ) started freaking out about a plane flying into the WTC. I thought for sure he was joking, because he's made some pretty bad jokes before. But then ABCNews cut in and I knew it was for real after listening to it for a few moments. I don't recall how I got to work..must've been on autopilot.

The store was completely dead that day and the mall across the street closed at noon so everybody could go home and watch TV. There was also the fear that Dallas (which is about an hour away) would be the next target. My boss didn't allow us to have any radios or anything at our checkstands, so the only news I got all day long was from the few customers who came in. I would beg them for information and I was able to convince my boss to let me call my mother. One of her friend's sons is a chef in NYC near the WTC. He used to babysit me and my brother and sister, so I was afraid for him. Luckily, he'd been off that day and had been in his apt when everything happened.
I didn't actually see any news footage of the disaster until I got home that night. Neither of us felt like cooking, so DH ordered a pizza. We sat in the living room and watched the 6 pm news. I cried so hard and DH just kinda had to hold me up. It was way worse than OKC had been and I couldn't believe something like this had happened. I wondered if Dallas would be next or Fort Worth (my hometown). I didn't know what to think, what to do. We somehow made it through though and my birthday eight days later was very very somber.

This also reminds me of the first time I ever heard "Where Were You On That September Morning" (I think is the name) by Alan Jackson. I had to pull off the road and just sit there and cry and cry and cry. That song really touched me. Right after the attacks, they were playing "God Bless the USA" a lot and a mix version of Jewel's "Hands" that had news clips dubbed in.

Thanks for the bump. I can't forget that day. It changed my life completely. It was election night on LI, and I was supposed to be doing live camer for the elction coverage that night (I worked for the news station). I got up to watch tv...cartoons in fact...and they broke in with the news of the first plane. They were speculating that it may have been a small single engine type plane. I called DH (then Dbf) at work and he flipped on the tv on his desk (he worked for AMC/Bravo etc..). I was on the phone with him when we watched the liveshot of the second plane flying into the tower. We were speechless. I cried. The I hung up and called my mom. She was hysterical, my sisters were devastated.

Then I called the news station to see if they needed me earlier than I was supposed to be there. It was so insane (I could hear screaming in the background) but my boss told me to come in at 2 like I was scheduled and they'vd figure out what to do with me. Then the buildings collapsed....I cried more, knowing my colleagues were there, possibly wounded (turns out one of them was killed).

As I drove to work on the LIE (the Long Isladn Expressway) what an absolute eerie feeling to see NOT ONE OTHER CAR on the road. Occassionally a police car or Emergency service worker would speed by (100mph easily) heading towards Manhattan.

They stationed me on the North Shore of Long Island operating our live truck, in Glen Cove (the only place we could get a signal out of). I was there for about 7 hours. I watched on our feeds in the news van, everything that was coming out of Manhattan...it was horrible. As I was watching, this punk looking teen guy comes along (covered in tatooos and piercings) and saunters up to the truck. I was all ready to tell him to get the he-ll away from the vehicle, that it wasn't a free viewing stand for the carnage....and he knocks on the door (which was actually open) and says "Scuse me..." I was already for the verbal smackdown, so I snapped "Yeah?" And he glanced up at my monitors, filled with horrible video and said "You know where I can go to donate blood?" I started crying uncontrolably and called the news station to get locations of blood donation centers for him. He thanked me, gave me a hug and walked away.

My colleague who died, was a NYC police officer. Glen Petit, was great guy. he was part of the NYPD video unit and was trailing a firefighter brigade into the tower when it collapsed. He now has a street named for him in his hometown and a few scholarships in his names as well. I actually had to go and "cover" his funeral, as one of my assignments with the camera.

I'm glad this thread was bumped. I wasn't on the Dis at that time either.

On September 11, I was in school as usual and in a Science class. All I remember was seeing my teacher frantically using her cell phone, saying there was a "family emergency" and she had to get ahold of her relatives in New York. She turned on the TV just before the second tower collapsed.

I remember we had a test scheduled for that day, and she just passed it out and sat there, like in a trance watching the TV. Needless to say, I failed that test and then just went home. I was totally freaked out.

We were at WDW....in MGM. And had NO IDEA!!!

I think somehow, I would have preferred to have experienced it "live" (realtime) while watching TV like others. Instead of trying to spend hours / days / weeks trying to catch up in feelings AFTER we learned of it.

By the time we learned of it (noontime), the news stations were telling NEW things they were finding out....and not going back to those first few hours.

The VERY first footage I saw when I turned on the tv (around 1pm), was a 30 second film, showing/explaining plane #1 hit, then plane #2 hit, building collapsed, 2nd building collapsed, Pentagon hit, PA plane missing".

We HONESTLY thought it all happened THAT fast. It took a while to realize all those events took all morning.

So being in WDW.....was REALLY like being in another world. Everything was going on SOOOOOOO normally. :sad2:

We were at AK that morning. The bus driver asked if we heard the news. I still get chills if someone uses that phrase. It took 5 hours to be able to get a phone call home to NY to ask about family and friends who worked downtown in the area. What a horrible day for this country and the world. I agree, being at WDW that day was surreal to say the least.

I wasn't on the boards when this was all unfolding, as I didn't have internet access at work then. We listened to the radio, none of us really in the mood to work. I'll never forget the correspondent in New York saying the first tower fell. Being radio, the anchor at the desk didn't see it and asked, "part of the tower?" The correspondent said, "No, the WHOLE BUILDING". Just that unbelieveable. Then on my break I saw the second tower fall on live TV. After the PA crash, they sent us all home and I watched TV news the rest of the day. I remember no commercials, just news news news. I also remember how beautiful a day it was. I didn't cry, I was so stunned. I first visited NYC in 1993 and landed at LaGuardia on the same day of the WTC bombing. Just a few days later, we were driving through Lower Manhattan and passed the towers. I remember how I looked up at them and thought they'd never fall, they were too strong. :(

My DH (then boyfriend) was laid off at the time so he didn't have any idea this all happened until I called him. He said that for months afterward he would turn on the news as soon as he woke up to see if there was anything going on.

I will never forget this day on the DIS. I was away at college and in class when everything started happening. The guy who sat next to me had a pager and got news updates on it. He told us what happened, but at the time they were saying it was just a small plane. I figured that the pilot and perhaps a few others where the small plane struck would be killed. I went back to my apartment and turned on the news, while calling my mom at work. When my mom answered she was crying, and I asked her why. She asked me if I had the news on (which I did, but up to that point the anchors were just talking and not showing footage). Just as I asked her again why she was so upset, they cut to the footage of the tower collapsing. I just couldn't believe my eyes and finally understood what was really going on and that it was not a small plane.

I hung up with my mom and called my DH (then boyfriend) who had no idea what was going on because he had been sleeping in. I went over to his apartment and was glued to the news and the DIS. I couldn't get on the news websites, and the DIS had very up to date information. I was away from my parents, and I felt like the people here really supported and comforted each other that day and the days that followed. I will always remember the prayers for New Yorkers that were missing, trying to check on JayPD, the DISers from other countries putting images of their countries' flags at half mast to show support, and the overall outpouring of love on this board.

What i do remember i won't type here, but i will type something that really made my guys smile. It was around 2 or 3 am the morning of sept 12,we had been thru alot in the last 17 hours. At this point we had hundreds of our guys missing,we were sent to the piers to get some new supplys and gear as well as water and food.It was a long walk for us and we were beat up,banged up and real tired, but we had to push on.We hit the west side highway and there were well over 500 people at 3 am,they were clapping and cheering for us and screaming thank yous and given us hugs and hand shakes. This really gave us the strenght to move on,you have no idea what this meant to us.Its a hard day for some to remember,so many bad memorys. The FDNY lost 343 guys on this one day alone.I will never forget!!!

I was at work, my co-worker had called in sick, so I had to do her job checking in Vendors at the back of the store. Had no TV, no Radio, but my "sick" friend called me there at the desk to tell me about the "plane that crashed into one of the twin towers in NY!" She than screamed out OMG there it goes, as they some how had live feed going. I freaked and called my DH and he acted like it was no big deal, he heard it was a "small plane, like a cessna." I was confused and didn't know what to think, but some vendors I was checking in had heard about it, and were telling me about the Pentagon, and the plane crashing in Pa. :sad2: There was mention that Fl. was next, perhaps one of the Nuclear Power Plants being hit also. :guilty: I ran to the front of the store, to a TV we had on, in time to see one of the towers fall, thats when it hit home for me. There was about 25 people crowded around the TV up front, no-one was shopping, employees were not working, just watching the TV and some where crying.......it was the most horrible day of my life. :sad2:

I was waiting at a light across the street from the high rise that I was working in at the time when the first plane hit. I couldn't imagine how that could have happened. By the time I got upstairs the second plane had hit and we knew it wasn't an accident. We all spent the rest of the day on line at CNN or anywhere else we could get on to see pictures and get updates. We all cried and hugged. I don't work in that building any longer, but still drive by it from time to time. I go back to that day whenever I do.

I was on my way to my sophomore World Music class. I heard some of the professors running down the hall saying something about "they say a third was hijacked too and they can't find it!" Then I got in class and some of the other kids were talking about it. We happened to be on the chapter about Middle Eastern music that week. The professor said something about putting the events behind us for an hour and concentrating on music...about five minutes later another prof. came in and told us all classes were cancelled and the music building were under a mandatory evacuation (we were about a block from the FL capitol buildings) because a suspicious car with a picture of Bin Laden taped to the window was parked in front of the gov's mansion (turned out to be someone's idea of a sick joke). I went back to my dorm and but one of my roommates were packing up to go home. I tried to get through to DH (we were dating, he lived off campus), but I couldn't. So I just sat on the couch and watched the news, terrified that someone was going to bomb the capitol buildings.

Thank you. I did not have any info that day until my morning pre-kindergarten class went home at 11 am. The principal came in my classroom and whispered to me what had happened, to be on the alert, that if parents came to send them to the office for clearance, and then we just had to wait until 11.

When we went down front after the kids went home they had moved a television into the teachers' lounge and it was showing the second plane hit again and again and again while the newspeople were stating what they knew and didn't know. It made me feel just sick.

We set up large tables in the front foyer for people coming to get their children to check them out more quickly and easily. They were not allowed to talk with their children unless they took them home..............that's so the kids who weren't going home would be told by their own parents in their own way and not panic. We had so many parents who came to school not just to check on their kids, but because "I want to tell him what happened"........................

He was speachless.

Thank you for posting that! I wasn't a DIS member then, and reading that is so surreal.

I'll never be able to forget that day. I was in school like many other people here were. All the teachers got a notice asking them to find out if any student's parents worked in the Trade Center, and to have them report to the office. Many people were pulled out of school early. I wasn't, but when I got out my friend, her mother and I went to a hill nearby and watched the skyline smoking. And even though I don't attend church, I did that night.

I know people who saw the buildings fall from my town, people who worked near the Trade Center, NYC cops who could tell the worst stories you'd ever want to hear, and people who should have been at work that day but never made it. Even though I've seen those buildings many times in my life, it's sad that the only time that I've actually ever been there, I was looking at a crater.

Thanks for putting all of this together..what a lot of work...it is so terribly heartbreaking!

I remember waking up that day and getting our 4 kids and myself ready for school, we didn't have any TV's or radios on so we had absolutely no idea what had happened before we headed happily out to school.
I was sitting in our staff room at school during break when people all around me were talking, I asked quite seriously "What movie are you guys talking about?"
Everyone looked at me like I was from another planet--"you didn't hear about the planes in the US hitting buildings?"
I had no idea....
Everyone started talking at once, I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach, so scared for the world!
I walked in a daze down to the library where TV's were on, I just stood there with tears welling up in my eyes as I watched the horror unfold....
What an incredibly devestating day for the US and for the world....

My husband and I had dropped the kids off to school together. We saw the the planes crashing into the building. After a while of watch this unfold we headed to the auto shop. We then heard the explosion at the Pentagon, then we saw the smoke. We rushed to get our boys, whose school was a hop, skip and a jump away the Washington Mall. It took us two hours to make a 10 minute trip. The scary part was having military helicopters fly over us, I noticed everyone around us watching them afraid of another crash.

After we got home we we tried to reach my MIL who was working in the Smithsonian Museum. She got home safely a bit later.

I must say that this thread did bring tears to my eyes.:grouphug: :grouphug:

Wow...I remember being on the DIS so much that day as it was a true comfort.

I was watching Bob the Builder with my dd who was 2 at the time when my neighbor/friend called and told me to change the channel.

My parents were out in Las Vegas (they drove with my brother from New Mexico) and they were so afraid since at that point no-one knew if there were going to be more attacks.

My ds was 6 at the time and when we flew 2 months later (with air marshals on the plane and militarty personnel with guns at the airport) he was drawing pictures of guns shooting planes down - he was shooting down the bad guys.

I remember just crying and crying...

It is something we will never forget.

It is so sad....my dd8 came home from 3rd grade today and ask me why they didn't talk about Sept.11th at school today. :confused3

Even in preschool her teacher had them draw pictures on 9/11. They didn't go into detail, but explained things on a child’s level. Every year since then, her class has discussed it on some manner. To think that she is older now, has questions, is more understanding and now it is being swept aside in the classroom.....it's both heart breaking and frighteni9ng to me.

As long as she is in my home....we will ALWAYS remember and do so honoring the people that lost their lives that horrible day. :sad2:

At one point I had to quit watching the tv and the disboards and go outside to listen to nothing for awhile. Then I realized how eerily quiet it was, as we lived under the flight path for the airport. The lack of planes in the sky made it real to me,

For those who are interested, how 9/11 unfolded here on the dis. Many memories here. Many thanks to Jenifer once again for her compiling all these many posts a little over 9 years ago. The times of the posts as reported are off, possibly the onboard computer clock in Jenifer's PC. The times would have been like 8:55 AM EDT and later.

Thanks for bringing this thread up Dan. I was a lurker then, but don't remember being online much at the time. Interesting to read the thoughts of people here.

One of the things I most remember about 9/11 was getting information here on DIS. I was at work so no TV. CNN and other news sites were all jammed, you could not get anything. The breaking news e-mails from CNN were running about an hour behind, I think I had over 20 by the end of the day. But DIS was up and running. One of our coworkers happened to be home that morning and called in to see how everyone was. As I was talking to him, he said one of the buildings just fell. I remember saying, what do you mean it fell? He said, it just totally fell. I just couldn't imagine.

Every second of this day is fresh in my mind as it was 10 years ago.

I was at work about a 30 minute trip to NYC. My son was an infant at the time. At around noon our office closed and I picked up my child from daycare and drove home on the NJ Turnpike, could see black thick smoke everywhere. The next door neighbor of my parents died that day, only one of two people from the town they lived in. He was only 47 and called his wife at home but didn't make it out of the 2nd tower in time.

In the summer of 1999, we took my MIL, FIL and extended family up to the observation desk of the WTC...I remember how awesome it was, and we were talking about how cool it was that many years before someone walked a tight-rope between the buildings. I can't even describe how high they were, literally they were in the clouds.

May those innocent people who died that day rest in peace.

That day is burned into my head like a photograph. Was watching Regis when they cut away to say that a fire was in the WTC. Then, they started talking about a small plane might have hit it. All of a sudden, we saw the second plane hit. I was horrified. On the phone with my mom and sister. We live close to Wright Patt and I just wanted my son home. I just had a feeling that I needed to get there to him, so we drove up and got him.

Thank God we did because some insane father was in the school SCREAMING "Come on boys (to his sons) lets go. RUN! America is under F*(#%ing attack." In the middle of the elementary school.

We had no idea if my uncle was alive for about 24 hours....

In the afternoon after we had been watching tv all day, we were finally sitting down to eat and all of a sudden a HUGE, ENORMOUS BOOOM went off. Later on, we found out it was a sonic boom from Bush's plane taking off. However, our news was freakin us out for like 20 minutes. Saying to take cover and that there were reports of a plane down at the VA. It was so scary.

God bless all who were touched by this horrific tragedy!

The secondary thing that the thread points out is the dear friends that used to be on the DisBoards Community Board. I kinda miss some of those people.

I work at a high school, and there were posters around campus remarking about not forgetting what happened on 9/11. Then I realized that the students were 4-8 year-olds at the time. Hopefully, our teachers have done enough "teaching" about this event.

(another side note: when I copy stuff about the Vietnam war for the US History classes, I recall that it was "current events" when I was in high school!)

Thanks for bumping this Dan. Read every word of the first post, and boy, it feels fresh all over again. The secondary thing that the thread points out is the dear friends that used to be on the DisBoards Community Board. I kinda miss some of those people. How true.I work at a high school, and there were posters around campus remarking about not forgetting what happened on 9/11. Then I realized that the students were 4-8 year-olds at the time. Hopefully, our teachers have done enough "teaching" about this event.

(another side note: when I copy stuff about the Vietnam war for the US History classes, I recall that it was "current events" when I was in high school!)My brother served in Vietnam (actually living there right now  ) when I was about 8 years old. I remember my mother waiting every day for mail from him, and when mail would finally arrive, our mail carrier (who walked the route) would get into his car and drive to our house first, then go back to the beginning and walk his route. It has always struck me how instantly everything plays out now; I sat in the waiting room at Boston Children's Hospital when my DD had surgery, watching the start of the Iraq War as it happened. Re-reading everything on this thread as it happened is haunting.

On 9/11, I was just walking from the kitchen into the LR to check the time...I was going to change the channel from the Today Show to repeats of Mary Tyler Moore at 9 AM, but they were just announcing that the first plane had hit. I called my husband at work (he was supposed to go to NYC that day on business), and we talked about it being a terrible thing, but this was before we knew it was terrorism. I remember them saying on the Today Show how odd it was, because it was such a clear day. And then everything started to unfold... :(

I found out about the attack by seeing a thread on the DIS. I will never forget that.

Our Social Studies lesson today was about 9/11. I teach middle school so many of my students did not understand the event. My project was for them to interview an adult, preferably their parent, about the events of that day. They presented their interviews to the class. By understanding the emotions felt by their parents that day they better understood the horror of that day and its impact on the country.

My memory is long.
I am a teacher in elementary school. Our principal came room to room to tell us what happened and to NOT let the children know so they wouldn't become scared. So all day we tried to get info on the sly without the children knowing anything. The teacher across the hall from me had a daughter at NYU and she kept trying to call her but couldn't get through. I would watch her class when she would try to use the phone. Later that morning a reading teacher came to my room and said that they crashed a plane into Pittsburgh and my sister works in a downtown high rise there. So then the teacher across the hall covered for me while I tried to get ahold of my sister. Of course, later I found out the plane crashed in Somerset. It wasn't until 2:30 that afternoon that my class went to music class (ten years later I remember it was music class). That was when I first saw any video footage at all. Even though I'd been hearing about it during the day I couldn't believe it when I saw the video of the towers collapsing. I never could have imagined such a thing. I can remember visiting the WTC with my church youth group and eating my first NY bagel there. It was such a worldly thing to me at the time being from the countryside of PA. I called my grandfather that night who was a WWII vet. He NEVER talked about his war experiences and was really a man of few words in general. I remember him saying to me that he felt really bad for all of those people because he knew what it felt like to lose your "buddies" that way. Broke my heart then and breaks my heart now to remember it (he has since passed :littleangel:). I thank God my children weren't born yet in 2001. I don't think I could have let them leave my side for weeks after that. :sad1: What a horrible, horrible day.

I remember that day very well. I was 12 and we had just started middle school about a week before (we start after labor day). I went to school in Fairfax County, VA so about 20 mins. west of the Pentagon.

I was in band class when the towers were hit. Had no idea what had happened. It was weird though because administrators kept coming into our class to get kids whose parents were there to pick them up. In a class of about 50 students, by the end of the class, there were probably about 20 of us left. That continued throughout the day. Our lunch period was combined with "activity class" which was basically a free class before or after our lunch. Our activity teacher usually had teh TV turned on to the Price is Right during our activity class but that day it was not on at all (now we know why). We kept asking if he could turn it on and he just said no. No explanation at all. Later that day, we kept hearing rumors about what was going on. Al administration had been told to keep all TVs off and they were not allowed to tell us anything that had happen or was happening.

We were not allowed to go outside to wait for pickup if our parents picked us up and no one was allowed to walk home. They had other arrangement for those students. Thats when we really knew something was up. When we got on the bus we were told that we were not allowed to get off at any other stop besides the one we were assgned to. I was not happy. My mom worked at our elementary school and I would get off at the stop right near there a lot to go to the school to hang out there until they got out. Obviously we knew something serious was going on. and remember, cell phones were not as common place as they are now with middle school students.

When I got home, my brother was not home yet (he was in high school) so I ended up going to a friends house who lived right behind us.

I remember that the next 2 days we had no school. Everything was closed. The thing was...at the time, we were 12. Our parents were trying to keep everything as normal as possible for us. We KNEW what was going on but I think we still didn't really UNDERSTAND just what was happening and how massive the events were. When we found out we had no school, all we wanted to do was have a sleepover. I remember going to my friends house and there were like 10 of us there. We had pizza, ice cream, watched movies and slept over. For us, it seemed like a normal day off.

Looking back on that it's weird. Because being 22 now, I can't believe that we just went on with our lives semmingly so oblivious to what was going on but I think we were just being kids. I'm extremely grateful that all of our parents let us just be kids and let us do what we wanted to do. From what my mom was saying, none of our parents wanted us to watch the TV coverage of it anyway and that was all that was happening so they thought it was better if we just spent the day with out friends so that we were keeping busy.

I think it was hard for us because we were at an age where we knew what was going on. We saw the news, we heard all the adults talking and we knew something had happened. But I think we were still too young to really comprehend any impact that it could possibly have on any of us.

It did have a huge impact on me at that time in one way though. My Bat Mitzvah was in June 2002. I was having trouble deciding on a theme and decorations and someitme after Sept. 11th happened I decided on doing an America the Beautiful theme. Red, White and Blue decorations. Red, White adn Blue hats for my friends as placecards and the adult tables were all a different major city and we had the words for the song God Bless the USA posted around the ballrooms.
