Oregano (also called wild marjoram)

Growing: A perennial; grow in full sun; look for Greek oregano for best flavour. Prescribed by ancient herbalists to aid digestion, stimulate appetite, and act as a purgative. Small white/pink/purple flowers are fragrant, but pinch back to encourage leaf production.

Flavour Profile: Earthy and intense with hints of clove and balsam.

Uses: In almost any tomato dish; pasta sauces, pizza, chili con carne, barbecue sauce. Excellent in egg and cheese dishes; meat or poultry stuffings; on pork, lamb, chicken and fish. Essential ingredient of chili powder. Common in Italian, Greek and Mexican dishes.

Harvesting: Pick leaves as needed. For drying, cut top 6in. off stems just before flower opens.

Note: This herb is best used dried.

A must in the herb garden.

It's amazing how a herb when purchased dried can have a strong, overpowering taste. But when grown in the garden it has a mild, pleasant taste and adds flavor to so many dishes.

We have some oregano growing in a place that we'd rather not have it growing. It comes up every year and we have not been able to get rid of it. We've pulled it now for at least 8 seasons and think we get rid of it, but low and behold, it appears again the next year. Any ideas? Thanks!

Wow cgcw, that is some stubborn oregano!!! I really don't know what to suggest, other than a non-selective herbicide like Roundup.

Do you have a blowtorch? ;)

Anyone else have some advice for cgcw?

Snowwark,

Hey, the blowtorch idea might work, as long as I don't set the deck on fire....I'll try it! Thanks.

maybe the blowtorch isn't such a great idea.....after all, knowing my luck, the oregano would be back next year. I guess I'll just keep pulling it out.
