View Full Version : Fit Before 50: Barb's Journal to a Slimmer, Healthier Self

I thought I'd pop in over here and start a journal, as that will probably help me stay on track. I've long had a goal of doing 100 Disney cruises by age 50, and that is now looming just 5 years away. I decided to add another piece to that...to get slimmer and healthier by age 50. I've already lost about 15 pounds but I'd like to get rid of another 20 to 25 and build up my muscle and endurance. Problem is, I work at home and juggle three jobs so exercise, stress management, etc. often get tossed by the wayside.
I'm a licensed mental health counselor, so I know what I need to do and how to do it. I just have to get my butt in gear! This is a supportive community so I think it will be a great resource. For starters I am going through the Wii Fit Sports Active 30-day challenge and am also doing a nightly meditation CD. I am also examining my work goals to make sure they are realistic and tweak them as needed. I will be refining this plan so I have something solid to focus on in the new year.

So glad you started a journal! I can definitely say that it has been so helpful for me. Keeps me so much more accountable. I certainly agree with you when you wrote that this is "a supportive community." I have found the members on the WISH board wonderful. Best of luck with your weight loss goals. And, please, keep us (ok, me) updated about your success with the Wii Sports Active 30-Day Challenge.

Hi Barb,
I was reading some of the Wii Fit threads earlier this week (don't have one, but was curious) -- and recognized your signature banner right away!
Good luck on reaching your two goals...the cruise one and the weight one!
I look forward to seeing your success.

Thanks, guys! I did day three of the Wii challenge today. I love EA Sports Active except for two little things...it doesn't like to register my motion correctly on certain exercises. Hubby says it's amazing the thing works at all, which is true. It's truly like an electronic virtual coach. The second thing is that it doesn't give you time to change your equipment between sets. In some you have one controller in your leg band, in some you use a stretchy band, etc. It just goes right into the next one, but I learned to pause it by clicking the "how to do it" video since it doesn't seem to have a pause button.
I used to be an evening work-out person but I've done it in the morning for the past two days. Seems nice to get it over with. Tomorrow is my day off from the Wii (it automatically puts those on your schedule) so I need to decide whether to go to the kick-butt class at the health club or just do some mild Wii Fit stuff. Or I could compromise and do water jogging laps at the health club or go biking at night and check out the holiday decorations. Decisions, decisions!

Thanks for all the info on the Wii. I'm really looking forward to trying it out today or tomorrow. It looks like I'll be buying it this afternoon.
I love starting my morning with a workout. I totally agree with you. There's something about starting off with one and knowing that it's done! I hope you have a great day.

Hi Barb, so glad you started a journal! Wish is so supportive, some of my best friends in life are right here on this board. I know you will find a lot of success and support!
I just got the Wii fit for my birthday, I need to open it and figure it all out!
I love both your goals and know you will make them both.
I recognize you, I read a review you did on the Shamu buffet thing at Sea World and ended up booking it last June based on your review. So seeing you around here is pretty cool!

Hi Barb,
Welcome to WISH!! :welcome:
I love your goal of 100 cruises by 50!:thumbsup2 If you don't mind me asking, what number are you on right now? After our first on property trip to WDW, my DH and I set a goal of staying at every one of the WDW resorts at least one time. Then we stayed at POP for free dining and BCV for the holidays and we've been stuck on those two ever since. ;) We did stay at BWV this year and it was beautiful! ::yes::
We don't have a Wii yet, but I'm looking forward to following your journey to see how it works for you. :goodvibes
Hope you have a great day today!:wizard:

We'll be taking Disney cruise #72 on Jan. 31 so I'm doing good on that goal. If DH and I both maintain our jobs and keep up a 6-cruises-a-year pace my 100th cruise should fall right around my 50th birthday.
Today is an "off" day on the Wii (it makes every third day a rest day) so I think I will do some water jogging at the health club tonight. We're meeting my nephew and his family for lunch in downtown Celebration...that should be fun, as we haven't seen his two children yet and the oldest is two already. Time sure flies!

Congrats on losing 15lbs already! :cool1: Are you doing any specific plan or just watching your calorie intake?
I am definitely a morning workout person. It started out to be because of my schedule, then I started to like it.

You are doing a great job, keep up the good work!
I should have talked to you about our cruise. We just got back from the Magic Dec.5th.We had a blast.
Have you ever had Okim or Sipho for your servers? They were awesome.
Thanks for stopping by my journal- every little bit of support helps.

Nope, haven't had Okim or Sipho but I'll watch for them when we sail the Magic in March.
I lost the 15 pounds mainly by not keeping any snacks at all in the house and cutting way back on sugar. Now I let myself have the yougurts with the candy topping as a treat because that's a very measured amount. We pretty much cut out ordering desserts when we eat out, although we've been backsliding on that a bit lately. I started cutting back on portion sizes too and now it takes much less to fill me.
Tonight I didn't go to the health club for water jogging like I planned. Some friends stopped over so after they left I did one of my Walk Away The Pounds DVDs instead. Hubby is at Epcot and he texted me that Soarin' is 160 minutes...ouch! Doesn't make me feel too bad that I had to stay home and work tonight.

Hi Barb,
That sounds very sensible the way you have lost weight. Sounds a lot like what my mom did years ago and that was way easier a habit to maintain than some crazy, drastic plan.
How did it go meeting your nephew's kids? Time does fly, my nephew turned 26 today which does not seem possible.
I am a big Walk Away the Pounds fan!

The cruises are tricky, but I give myself a little latitude as long as I continue my workouts (I love the treadmills as they overlook the ocean...the jogging deck is often more like an obstacle course). It's just tricky to adapt back to my regular eating patterns on land sometimes when I've let myself indulge in Palo gelato.
WATP is my favorite DVD series, although I really tightened up with The Firm a few years back. I like the fact that they run from 20 mins. up to an hour so I can slot them in easily no matter how much time I have. It's back to Wii Sports Active today...couldn't get my butt moving this morning so I will do it in the evening. Hubby is picking up sushi for us for lunch at Publix...I know that sounds like a weird place to buy it but it is really, really good!

I'm pretty wimpy about sushi (although I will eat raw tuna) but Publix has rice rolls with fake crab meat and either avocado or cream cheese. I usually get those while hubby gets the "real" stuff. We get it at the Publix near WDW (I-Drive and 192) although I think all of 'em sell it. Hubby did the weekly shopping while he was there and picked me up a nice assortment of veggies and low fat cottage cheese for lunch and snacks this week. I tend to get in trouble if I don't have something healthy for lunch close at hand as that is an excuse to run out and get fast food.
Amazingly I am looking forward to my workout this evening. I think that's a combination of the fun of the Wii and just feeling good (although tired!) when done.

I wondered why I was looking forward to it by the time I was done, ha ha! It was total chaos here last night and it has continued through today. The bird (quaker parrot) got into a screaming fit while I was working out, and then the phone started ringing. I knew it was a client so I got hubby to answer and deal with it. Meanwhile I finished the workout and had to make a call related to the client situation. Bird was still screaming, so I went to cover him with the phone in my hand and knocked down a glass dish on his cage...piece of flying glass chopped the top of my bare foot. It was one of those cuts that bleeds gallons. Hubby cleaned up the glass but didn't get all of it and the cat found some and started EATING it!
This morning I moved the bird to his smaller cage because he was screaming again. Meanwhile cat found ANOTHER piece of glass to eat! I got it away from him and went to clean the bird's big cage. Two of the cats teamed up to knock down the small cage...water and bird food everywhere and screaming, freaked-out parrot. Ugh! I figured I would take a journal break before finishing the big cage and making some lunch (salad...mmmmm...I love veggies). It will probably be another evening workout but hopefully a lot calmer than yesterday.

Quick update...things have calmed down, thank goodness. I'll be doing my workout as soon as my dinner settles. Hubby (who is the household cook) made turkey cottage pie, and I had my salad for lunch. My snack later will be a yogurt as usual.
A friend and I are going to start walking a couple of mornings every week. We're going to start after the 1st, which will overlap with part of my Sports Active 30 Day Challenge, but I don't think it will be too much. I'll just always do the Wii in the evenings on those days. I feel more accountable when I'm exercising with someone and we have great walking paths here in town.

My foot is healing nicely and all the house pets are calm (relatively speaking...having a kitten around is insane).
Today is an "off day" from Sports Active so I did half an hour of step with the Wii Fit. It's not too overly intense but I broke a light sweat. As I was putting it away I discovered that I own My Fitness Coach for the Wii too! I didn't even remember that I bought it, so I might try it after the 30-day challenge.
Food will be bad today since it's Melting Pot, but I've given myself permission for that as long as I stop eating when I am full and then don't indulge in snacks tonight. We're going to a party at a friend's house; here in FL, New Years is a big time for fireworks plus we have a tradition of shooting off Mentos and Coke at midnight. Odd, yes, but very compelling when you've been indulging in margaritas beforehand!
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

Sounds like you live close by! I shop at the Publix on 192 that's near highway 27. :)
Part of the problem living in a tourist area is that there is SO much convenience food! It's so easy to order a pizza or stop at one of the fast food places. I pass 2 McD's, Wendy's, Chick-fil-A, Burger King, Taco Bell, KFC and Long John Silvers-just on the way home from work!!! And that doesn't even count the Olive Gardens, the Carrabas, the Longhorn Steakhouse and the Chinese places!!! The temptations can be overwhelming when you've had a long commute home and you just can't face cooking.

Just got home from the Melting Pot. We eat it with broth instead of oil and I had chicken, tuna and a little beef plus lots of veggies so that wasn't bad (we won't discuss the cheddar cheese and the cherries jubilee chocolate dessert which I also ate). We won't be going out tonight after all as my friend who was holding the party ended up at the hospital with her son. He had a seizure out of the blue...first time ever. Hopefully it won't be anything serious. We have champagne and fireworks so we'll have a little midnight fun here at the homestead.

Hi Barb. Don't our pets keep things lively sometimes? I was laughing at the chaos of the bird and cats in your house!
I am sorry about your friend's son. I hope its an isolated incident.
We always do broth at Melting Pot too, its rich enough without the oil!
We have so much fast food here too. Pretty much every corner, of every intersection has two or three fast food joints per corner. Its insane. And Denver is one of the top five healthiest cities in the U.S. Don't ask me how with all the fast food and Mexican restaurants we have!
Great job with the walking partner. I love walking with my one friend. Of course in the winter we have to stick to the indoor track, but it sure makes the time go faster.

I haven't heard from my friend yet today but hopefully all the test results will be in and it won't be anything serious. Her son is a healthy kid and has never had a problem before so I'm hoping it's just a fluke.
Did my workout this morning and will have some cottage cheese and veggies for lunch. I love munching on raw califlower with just a dab of ranch dressing.
I'm going to try to keep up with my vitamins and calcium supplements in the new year as well as my exercise and good eating habits. I have trouble swallowing big pills, but I found One-A-Day gummis for adults. I take those and a couple of Tums every night...been doing it for a few months now. I don't know if it helps, but hubby is a big believer in vitamins and insists that it does so I figure it can't hurt.
It's a rainy, gloomy day here but I'm hoping for good weather next week so I can start riding my horse Figment again too. I haven't ridden him in months (there's a girl at the barn who rides him so he is still getting work and attention). It's exercise and also stress management to get out into the woods, as he's boarded right across the street from a state park with 20 miles of horse trails.

Had to add a "crazy pet" addendum:
I was munching on my lunch califlower and setting the stems aside as I am fussy and don't like them. The kitten (who is actually around 8 months old now...we got him at 8 weeks old when some jerk threw him out of a car on I-4 in front of us) stole one of the stems and ate it! He did that with a couple more. Maybe he's on a diet too?! I told hubby and he said, "Well, watch this," and got a cashew out of the cabinet. Gave it to SheiKra and he ate that too! Hubby said he dropped a nut one day and the cat ate it so that's how he discovered his appetite for cashews. Weird, weird creature (this is the same cat that was eating glass from the broken bird dish).

My friend's son is home from the hospital. They didn't find the seizure cause, so now it's just wait and see; he'll have to go on meds if it happens again.
I'm going to do my Wii workout this afternoon after I get some stuff done in the house. We went out for breakfast this morning but it was absolute chaos because everyone is apparently heading home from WDW at once and stopping at the IHOP on 192 on the way. It took us more than half an hour to get our food, which I would have understood except that people seated at the same time as us got theirs and left before ours arrived (excuse was "the kitchen is backed up" which doesn't explain why others got their food so quickly). Then they brought hubby the wrong order; I didn't realize it because he didn't tell me until we were leaving. I told him he should have said something but he said he just didn't want to wait even longer. Sigh. Oh well, my omlette was good (got one loaded with veggies) and I only ate a sensible portion of it.
I've been dying to get out to Busch Gardens, which is great exercise as well as fun because that park is HUGE and you do a ton of walking. Problem is, the temperatures have not been cooperating.

Hi Barb, I hope your weather warms up! I have never been to Busch Gardens and have always wanted to go. I just can't ever cut back on Disney when we come to Orlando ;)!
That is so funny about your cat. My beagle will beg for carrots whenever I eat those, guess dogs and cats can enjoy the healthy stuff too!
I hope you get to ride your horse very soon!
I also keep meaning to tell you we took a Disney Cruise in 2006. Omg, what a heavenly vacation that was! Now that we have sold our DVC, I hope we have more money to take another cruise soon. Its just so hard with airfare and four of us to do another one but I am hoping for dd's sweet 16 we can go. We went on the Eastern one 9/2/2006 - 9/9/2006. It would be too funny if you were on that one too! Have you ever had Mladdin and Ion for your servers? I still think about those guys and have a picture of us with them sitting out.

01-02-2010, 09:23 PM
I don't think I've ever had them as servers although I've lost track over the years. We usually do the Western when we do a 7-night...I think we've only done one or two Easterns.
I ended up doing my workout quite late today (just finished it) because I kept getting rung up for online counseling sessions while doing some other work. Oh well, I can't complain about making money. The only thing I question about Wii Sport Active is that it considers a run to be a cool down...you run for a couple of minutes, walk for a few seconds, then boom! Done. Seems like it should be a walk but oh well. I'm really enjoying the new activities it throws in every couple of days. Volleyball was the new thing today.

We did the "backstage" roller coaster tour which was really cool; you get to climb up on Montu's brake run. We have APs so we go there a lot in the summer; I barely need to do a workout after a day of trekking back and forth in that park.
Today is an "off" day for Sports Active so I will either do Walk Away the Pounds or some Wii Fit step or maybe a little of both. It's weird how I feel compelled to do a workout every day now but I am very happy about that.

yikes on the glass/foot incident, the cats and bird going nuts. I have 3 dogs and a cat, so I understand pet chaos at times...glad everyone is okay.

Sorry to hear of your friend's son - hope he is okay. No answers ...frustrating, but hopefully an isolated incident.
Funny about your kitten's appetite, HA - and man, how lucky you were there to rescue your sweet baby from the jerk who threw him out.

This is actually a great time to move to FL so hopefully that will last a few years. We bought right before the insane price bubble. Then it burst, and now Celebration is full of foreclosures and places where people just walked away. The good thing is, it's affordable for families again instead of just investors. Clermont is nice, too, especially if you want some property. The people where I board my horse have ten acres across from Lake Louisa State Park.
Last night was so darned busy that I didn't get to exercise till after 10 p.m.! It's a very busy time for one of my businesses, plus I had a magazine article due today so the phone rang every time I was just about to plug in the Wii or get out a DVD. Finally I managed to do a Walk Away the Pounds routine before bed. It's funny how I just didn't feel "right" till I got in my exercise time. It was an off day for Sports Active so I had my choice of workout...today, back to SA, which I plan to do in the early evening.
Hubby is off to Chicago tomorrow for a few days for business, so I will have to curb my tendency of going for fast food instead of eating healthy. I'm going to make a specific plan because the structure keeps me on track.

Wow, a 10pm workout? Were you able to get to sleep?
I'm sure if you are that dedicated to working out that you will not let that go to waste by getting fast food while your hubby is gone. If you are tempted, you could always get Subway, which is quick but much healthier!

Great idea on the Subway! We have one very close; sadly the Quiznos closed as they have a few lower calorie options too. I found an old weigh loss journal book while cleaning house today so I am going to start tracking my food, vitamins and exercise in there to look for trends.
I did a ton of house cleaning and organization today, which was long overdue. I need to do my workout soon or I'll be doing it at 10 again! It doesn't bother me too much because I am a night owl and usually go to bed at midnight or after anyway. I need to change that; once my friend and I start walking (as soon as the weather improves...it was flippin' 28 degrees overnight...in FL!!!), we'll be doing it early morning so that will force me onto a better sleep routine.

I love that you have the Wii incorporated in your healthy plan! We just got one and have been playing around with it. I've really felt the games and things that we have done on the WiiFit+. Once I get my eating regime worked out, I'll figure out my exercise regime. I feel like I can only tackle so much at one time. The Wii is easy and fun though, and I feel like I"m doing something by doing it!
Also, I love your cruising goal. I thought my parents went an quite a few cruises but they are nothing compared to you! How fun that must be. And I agree with a PP, how in the world do you deal with all that food?!
Anyway, your goal is fit before 50, mine could be fit before 40.

Ugh, another after-10 workout last night. I was on business calls till 10 p.m., although I can't complain becase that means business is good and that's something to be happy about these days. The EA Sports Active threw in a new activity (dancing). I'm looking forward to getting the upgrade package, although I am waiting until after I complete the 30 day challenge.
It doesn't seem like enough time would have passed to see new muscle, yet I swear I notice a difference in my arms (it's very big on arm exercises). I am also building endurance in the running part.
The cruise is always a challenge; I give myself permission to "let go" at Palo and behave myself at the other meals (although my downfall is snacking on french fries in between). I actually made it through the Panama Canal cruise (15 days) without gaining, but that's because I worked my butt off every day on the treadmill. They have TVs to watch, although it's soothing just to look out at the ocean.
Hopefully things will be slower today so I get my workout in at a reasonable time (and get caught up on my other work...I have been neglecting my writing due to being busy with the other two businesses).

I hear you about being a night owl. Unfortunately, I've been having to fight it because of our current life situation. I MUST wake up early. Ugh. I hate it. So hard to do.
It sounds like you have been able to achieve a decent balance in life. You sound able to mix pleasure with sensibility and know when to limit yourself and when to kick the exercise up a knotch to match your cruise indulging. Awesome.

My next cruise is Jan. 31 so I will be done with the 39 day challenge by the time we sail. I wonder if I should bring my exercise band and try to recreate a routine on board. I usually do the treadmills but those get a little boring if there is nothing good on the TV.
I was only so-so with eating today but there is tomorrow to improve. My big emphasis is on the exercise anyway but that doesn't mean I can be a total piglet (but it's that time when chocolate looks so good......mmmmm.....).

I wasn't as thrilled with the Wii Fit Plus as I thought I would be, probably because it didn't save my biking progress after I worked my butt off. The flying game is cute and I'd love the Kung Fu if it were more intense. The marching game just showed me how uncoordinated I am. I still like the original Wii Fit games best but I'm sure the others will grow on me.
It's been six days since I used Wii Fit and it claimed I was up by 3 pounds! I highly doubt that is right; I'm going to have to weight myself upstairs before I go to bed.

I haven't played the WiiFit+ that much. We just got it. The motes have died. I need to get them charged up...blah blah blah. But in the + menu, the first game on the upper left? It's bubble something. If you get into that game, it is a WAIST buster. My obliques (sp?) were SO SORE after playing that game! Maybe I'm weird, but I really liked playing it.

01-07-2010, 11:36 AM
Was that the hula hoop game? I've done that one a few times but can't quite get the hang of it. My favorites of the old stuff are the skiing, tilt table balance game, boxing and step. It was a Sports Active day today...halfway through the 30 day challenge. Woo hoo!
I weighed myself upstairs and lost a pound so I don't know what was up with the Wii Fit scale. Whew, that scared me.
Still pretty darned chilly here, although DH texted me a picture of the snow in Chicago so I was grateful to be here in good ol' FL.
TxRabbit
01-07-2010, 12:04 PM
Not hula hoop. You have to use your hips to side butt the balloons or bumper things that add up to 10. You can cheat the system (like all the games), but if you get into it and really swing your hips all around, it is a GREAT workout for all those waist muscles. It took me so many tries to just get through all the puzzles on the beginner level. Then you have to bump the ones that add to 15. I haven't made it through all those puzzles yet. I tell you what. My whole waist area totally felt doing that game.

I'm toying with getting the Shred to do at some point over the summer but it doesn't sound good to do the same workout every single day. Oh well, I can space it out on my own. I'm sure running is not a good cool-down either but that's what Sports Active always does. Then it has me walk for like 10 seconds. I don't think that does much good to cool down, LOL.

And now that I am on Level 2, I can see where this will be a good DVD to keep, because the different levels could be rotated however you want (yes, there are some things harder in L2 than L1, but there are also some that are easier, and they are totally different). Brrrr, it is cold here! I did my Wii Sports Active relatively early today because we were meeting out of town friends at DHS for dinner at the Brown Derby. I had a light lunch since I knew I'd probably be having dessert. Had salad, tuna, and split the banana dessert with hubby. We had the last ressie of the night so we were able to sit around and chat without worrying that we had to leave because people were waiting. It was 48, and I felt every chilly degree of that as we hiked back to the car.
My arms were surprisingly sore yesterday. I've been shortening the resistance band to make it harder and I guess it's working. I think I'm going to buy some regular exercise bands to use instead as the SA one is rather flimsy.
We've supposed to get snow tonight...UGH!!!! There is just something so wrong about snow at Disney World.

OMG, it was so cold this morning! DH and I had a lot of chores to do so we went out for breakfast and it was only in the low 40s. I was waiting in the car for him to run in to get French Toast coffee at the gas station on the way home (flavored coffee with no sugar is one of my favorite low calorie treats...I do put in some cream but the coffee itself has no calories since the flavor is in the beans) and the frozen rain was pinging on the windshield. I thought I was back in Chicago!
I haven't worked out yet, but since it's a "off day" from the 30 day challenge I am going to mess around with my favorite Sports Active exercises. I bought myself a Snuggie today since it's always cold in the family room, and one of my cats peed on it five minutes after I got it out of the box!! I got a new Snuggie (can't help feeling "ugh" about the old one, even tho' it's washed) and sprayed it with a cat pheremone spray called Feliway. I cleaned the soiled footrest and sprayed it down too and so far, so good.
I didn't end up doing a rest day workout because I got involved in backing up my computer files and the photos on my various chips, which I consolidated onto an 8 gig flash drive. That sorely needed to be done! I take a lot of photos for my articles and they needed to be organized and stored away.
Today will be Sports Active, but I also bought a Firm kit (DVDs and weights) because I think I can use the weights with the Wii instead of that stupid band. They have handles so I'm going to give it a try today. I had Firm video tapes, which I loved, and I like these DVDs because they have both full and express workouts on each. Got a heart rate monitor too for when I switch over to the My Fitness Trainer disc on the Wii.
Had lunch at Sonny's BBQ but I was pretty good; got full on the salad bar, so I took literally my whole meal home (ribs, bread and mac and cheese). It will be dinner tonight or lunch tomorrow. Usually we see whole families making a Sunday meal off one salad plate at that Sonny's, sort of like Randy Quaid in Vegas Vacation, but it was pretty dead today.

Amy&Dan, I'm sending good thoughts your brother's way. It's supposed to actually warm up this weekend...yay!
Yep, you can make walking loops on deck 4. It's the "jogging deck," but there are also shuffleboard grids and people just milling around so sometimes it's more like an obstacle course! One time I was chugging along at a good pace and some guy who had been looking over the rail just backed up and started walking backwards right towards me! It happened too fast for me to be able to dodge or stop (the deck was very crowded...we were in Panama and people were looking at the scenery) so I held out my water bottle sideways and he backed right into the cap. Bet he won't be running around backwards on the jogging deck anymore, and it saved me from being trampled.
I love using the Firm weights with my Wii. They work so much better than the band. I read reviews that say they are too light (three pounds) but they seem plenty heavy for me for all the arm curls, rows, etc. My husband is eyeing one of the Firm DVDs so hopefully he will try it. I'm probably going to try one tomorrow, since it's my Wii "rest day."
I had Firm videos and the fanny lifter and pole when we lived in Chicago. I really got great results from it (at the time, I combined it with Walk Away the Pounds). Can't wait to check out their new workouts tomorrow. I did my workout early today so it's nice to know it's out of the way. Oatmeal is on deck for lunch and hubby is making beef, steamed veggies and rice for dinner. They sell pre-made stuffed beef or salmon rolls at Publix that are great for easy dinners. I can never eat a whole one, but the cats are always willing to help.

The Firm DVDs are Hi Def Sculpt, Cardio Overdrive, Hard Core Fusion and Cardio Party. They all came with the cardio weight kit. I will probably try one of the cardio ones tonight since it's an off night from Sports Active and SA seems to focus so much on the weights/toning (the main cardio iseems to be that stupid running, and that's usually supposed to be the cool down...ha!).
I ended up playing with my Wii Fit last night even though I already did my SA workout. I just felt like doing a little more exercise, so I messed with the boxing, kung fu and snowball fight, then cooled down with the tilt table game. We used the pet option to weigh two of the cats. SheiKra, who was starving and less than a pound when we got him is now 10 pounds. My husband swore Farquaad would be 20 lbs. but he was only 16 (he probably was 20 before we got SheiKra as now he gets lots of forced exercise via chasing and wrestling).

You really mix it up with tapes and the different wii programs...what seems to be your favorite and why at this point? For the results, or because it's fun for you?
inkkognito
01-12-2010, 04:30 PM
Right now Wii Sports Active is my favorite overall for three reasons: the structure (i.e. the 30 Day Challenge, which makes me feel "obligated" to work out), the "real" exercises (vs. games on Wii Fit...SA has games too but much of it is weight training, lunges, etc.), and the fact that it only takes 25 to 30 mins. I'm surprised that I'm actually seeing results from such a short workout! It keeps me from being able to say "I don't have time for this" as an excuse to skip it.
The DVDs mix things up for me on the off days. I like Walk Away the Pounds because they have long and short options depending on how motivated I feel. That's part of the reason I chose the Firm DVDs, because they have full length and express options too.
I need to figure out how to work water-walking into my routine. The health club is not far, but it seems soooo long to get there when I can use the Wii or pop in a DVD so easily at home.

OMG, the Firm kicked my butt! I just did the short one since it was an "off" day, but I was still rather lost in the moves so I did a modified version. It was mostly cardio but it used the hand weights too and I worked up a good sweat.
The weather is finally getting nicer here. It sort of feels like spring in Chicago (50s today) and is supposed to be up to the 70s this weekend so maybe we will go to Busch Gardens. That's always great exercise since that's such a big park.
I'm sure my cats would be hanging out on the Wii board if I kept it on the floor. ANYTHING on the floor is fair game. They love it when my husband spreads out papers in his office so they can all take over and drive him crazy.

Ugh...DH brought home Thai take out last night and I got food poisoning! We ate last because he was over at DIsney; then at 1 a.m. all heck broke loose. I'm still running a 101 fever but the barfing had thankfully stopped and I can keep water down. I can't think about what I ate tho' because that's instant return to nausea. Of course it couldn't happen on a Sports Active off day. I;ll check everyone's journals tomorrow but wanted to pop in quickly before I curl back up in bed. I managed some broth and jello today although my stomach is still rebelling. I still can't believe this; I was doing so well with exercise, then BOOM! Oh well, I have the feeling there is going to be a weight drop when this is all done since I didn't eat for literally 36 hours and I don't think it's going to be any more than the liquids and maybe some bread today. I'll never complain about exercise again...I'd rather lose weight through that than this mess any day!

Thankfully hubby avoided the same fate as me; the only thing we both ate was crab rangoon so I know for sure that was not the culprit. I wish I had just ordered curried rice like he did (although he threw the leftovers away...I don't blame him).
I'm almost back to normal now. For some reason I've had a nagging head and body ache, but that's almost gone today so tomorrow it's back to exercise. We actually went out for lunch and I had soup and a baked potato with sour cream and veggies (weird I know, but I have them put tomatoes and avocado on it...back when Wendy's used to have a salad bar years ago I would get a potato and practically make a salad on top of it). So far so good stomachwise. I probably should have tried to get out for a walk today but I'm still catching up on work. It will feel so good to return to my routine.

I meant to start yesterday but I was so far behind in everything that I didn't come up for air till 11 p.m. between housework, regular work etc. I worked out this morning to get it out of the way and it felt great. I will still complete the 30 day challenge before the cruise, even though I hated to miss all those days.
I got some extra exercise...pulled out the steamer and steam cleaning the first floor, which was in desperate need of it. That included moving stuff around too so I actually worked up a sweat. I just love the Steam Shark appliances.

The steam cleaner is actually the kind for tile floors, not carpet. I have that and the small handheld unit that you can use to clean just about everything else (fixtures, appliances, etc.). The steam gets up all the ground-in dirt and the tile dries much more quickly than mopping. No more Swiffers for me, other than occasional touch-ups inbetween steaming.
I'm going to do my workout this evening. The weather is soooo gorgeous now! A bit chilly but in an invogorating way so I need to call my friend so we can start up our walking.
I'm proud of myself...have been channeling my chocolate cravings into my yogurt with the candy toppings. The candy amount is very limited but it seems to slake my sweet tooth enough to allow me to resist the craving for more, more, more.

I had a few bites and gave the rest of it to my kids. I was satisfied with the amount that I had and that was it. Usually, I would plow through it without even thinking about it or enjoying it.

Dang, my workout was late last night...11 p.m.! Work just got really crazy but I did get it in. Of course it had to be a really killer too. Today is a rest day but I might create my own Sports Active workout if I don't do something outside.
I'm trying to drink more Gatorade. Hubby bought me a different flavor (fruit punch) that is pretty tasty. I tend to stict to coffee in the morning which is not very hydrating after a sleep so I want to start substituting the Gatorade instead.
The cruise is just a little more than a week away (the 31st) and I am already thinking about a food and exercise plan to keep me on track....particularly the exercise since it's so easy to get lazy on the ship.
I am soooooo close to dropping below 140! Just a couple more pounds and I will enter new territory on the scale that I haven't seen in decades. That will be a real motivator/boost.

Whew, it was a busy weekend. I FORGOT to do my workout on Sat...I can't believe it! DH and I went to Busch Gardens early in the morning (it's a little over an hour away), then had dinner at a Mexican place on the way home. For some reason we were both so tired that we crashed...got up for dinner and stayed up for a bit, then crashed again. Guess we're not used to all that fresh air and hiking around at once. Oh well, at least I got the walking execise.
Yesterday was spent visiting every Target in the area in search of their store brand crystal cat litter. We've used it for years and it is the cheapest (most brands are wicked expensive). We went to the local store to stock up and it was on clearance!! They will no longer be carrying it...argh. We bought all 11 jugs and proceeded to visit all the other Targets in the area hoping to find more, but no such luck. Guess we'll have to switch brands and up the cat supply budget.
Did my workout early today as I have a community meeting tonight. I'm almost done with the 30 day challenge. Woo hoo!!!!! :thumbsup2

What are the biggest changes you've noticed from your 30 day challenge?
inkkognito
01-26-2010, 03:34 PM
The 30 day challenge seems to have toned me, particularly in my arms, and I noticed that I don't get as winded from the "long run" part. Hubby says he sees a difference in my legs too (Sports Active LOVES the squats) but I don't see that as much.
I think I'm going to bring the SA resistance band on the cruise for upper body work. I use the Firm weights when I'm doing exercises on the Wii but those would be a pain to put in the luggage. I also need to commit to a nice, long walk on Castaway Cay. They have an organized walk in the morning so I might aim for that.

Well, I was reminded this week of why I do not keep snacks in the house. Saw cocoa powdered almonds an thought it would be both a healthy snack and a way to feed my chocolate hormones. Normally I am good about nut portions, but those set me off. Ate way too many yesterday, could not bring myself to throw them away because they were pricey, so ate too many again today. Pure habit eating since I am not stressed and have no other reason. I will remember this any time I am tempted to buy a snack food.

I am all done with my 30 day challenge now on Wii Sports Active so I created some custom workouts. I might do another 30 day challenge at the "hard" level once we quit cruising for the summer (we take a break when the rates go up). Meantime it will be custom workouts mixed in with walking and water jogging, plus I need to get out to the barn and start riding Figment before the weather gets hot. A dressage rider out there has been riding him and she said he's really muscled up so I know he's all ready for a trail ride (she just rides him in the arena).
I'm going to try to maintain my weight on the cruise (would be nice to lose but Palo + gelato = damage control); I get lazy onboard so I'm going to instruct DH to push push push me to work out. He's great about doing his own workouts on the ship.

We're back!! I'm very pleased as I worked out every day but one. Did my Wii before we left the first day, then did a Wii-style workout (cardio and exercise band) the second and an hour walk on Castaway Cay the third. I pulled something in my back on Day 2 but it seems to be okay now...I think it helped to just do walking on Day 3. Day 4 I missed my workout due to logistics...couldn't fit in a workout and shower around all the tightly-scheduled activities. I should have gotten up early with hubby to do it but my lazy butt slept in...oh well, it was probably good to rest my back so I'll just do a double-long workout today.
I didn't do too bad with food...managed to avoid most snacking other than pizza one afternoon and avoided desserts about half the time. I haven't gotten on the scale yet but I suspect the damage won't be too bad.

catching up on journals...sorry it took me a few days...
habit eating...yeah, know that well. isn't it crazy how easy we slide into those things? some foods I just can't keep in the house! just better that way, and i no longer use "price" as an excuse not to throw it away...i've had that issue in the past also - seeing value, instead of calories
WAY TO GO on completing your workout. I also like how you made custom workouts -- ooh, i'm an off-season kind of traveler too when i can be..love off season prices!!!! Enjoy your rides with Figment
Enjoy your cruise!!! Can't wait to hear how it went! Did you get workouts in..what was your favorite part about this cruise?
ooh, just read you're back and you worked out...GREAT JOB - Castaway Cay looks heavenly, but me/ships - yeah...let's leave it at that

You did great getting your workouts in! :cool1: I'm sure the scale will be nice to you, and IF there is any change in the wrong direction, it'll be gone quickly once you get back into your routine. Do you have a workout plan now that your 30 day challenge is over?

For my new workout plan, I'm debating doing another 30 day challenge but kicking it up to the "Hard" level or buying the new version of Sports Active which has longer challenges that you can customize to do on certain days of the week.
I'm going to be delayed a week in my workouts because there is a media event most of next at WDW that I will be covering. I should be able to get in workouts up to and including Mon., then I will be busy all day Tues. to Thurs...not sure about Fri. The good thing is that they tend to keep you running through the parks so I will be burning plenty of calories even without an official workout. The bad news is, they feed you pretty darned good so I am committed to practicing moderation.

That is so cool that you are going to be doing a media event at WDW!:thumbsup2 It sounds like a lot of fun!::yes:: I saw a show with Giada de Laurentiis (sp?) on the Food Network a few years ago and I think she was at a media event. I ended up not workingout yesterday (bad Barb!) because I got so involved in my work catch-up so I got my butt out of bed bright and early this morning and did WATP but with my own twist. I did the one with walking and jogging intervals and added my own upper body workout with weights, plus ended with a series of lunges and squats on my own. I broke a really good sweat.
I'm up two pounds so I'm not too distressed about that. The 130s are still well within reach so I know I can knock off my cruise pounds and hopefully get down there before the next trip on 3/6. I'm going to bring my weights with me to WDW because I don't want to neglect my upper body even tho' I'll be doing lots of walking. Hopefully I can get in a quick weight session each night.

Wow, I couldn't believe it this morning! 140!!! The 130s are soooooooo close now. The thought of that kept me from weakening and ordering dessert at lunch (went to Longhorn and had an excellent chicken and grilled veggie salad...didn't even need dressing). I just remind myself I have a choice...short term pleasure or long term gain.
We went to Target so I got the new Sports Active and a set of three Billy Blank DVDs with exercise bands. I am going to use those (and some custom Wii workouts) until the cruise, then start the Sports Active 6-week challenge when we get back. Two of the DVDs are an hour, and there is also a half-hour ab workout. I like that because the old Sports Active neglects the abs. I also like the band use because I want to maintain and build on the toning I've accomplished so far. Hopefully Billy will be easier to follow than the Firm, in which I end up doing lots of modifications because I am uncoordinated! I've been doing modifications to Walk Away the Pounds too, mainly to make it more intense, so maybe these DVDs will be a good balance between the two.

Those new DVDs sound great. I just ordered a WATP DVD. It hasn't come in yet, but I can't wait to start it. I decided that I'll still reward myself with another one as scheduled, but that I need something to get me moving more. Sounds like the ones you bought do that and then some!

Whew, Billy Blanks Basic Bootcamp kicked my butt this morning! Got my heart pumpingand my abs can feel it too. I can't even imagine doing the advanced one at this point. I think I will do basic twice a week, the shorter abs workout once a week, and split the other days between wii and swimming.
I will try to check in tomorrow before I head to WDW. Then I probably won't be around much till the weekend because my online time will be devoted to my Examiner trip report, but I will be trying very hard to behave.

OMG it was fabulous! Even got to see a private concert with Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato. Click here (http://******************/x-2200-Orlando-Theme-Parks-Examiner~y2010m2d8-Disney-World-Resort-Showcase-Join-me-for-a-whirlwind-live-Disney-tour-with-reports-photos--more) for some of the coverage, although I still have a few more articles to do.
Of course there was way too much good food, especially at the Southwest Airlines reception and the Jonas/Lovato concert. I think all the walking offset some of that as I am only 2-3 pounds up. I let myself continue the bash through the weekend since our anniversary was Feb. 14 and we had Melting Pot reservations. Now it's back to reality! I really should have exercised over the weekend, but I am working on a special travel writing project for one of the companies I write for so I had to hustle to get caught up with that.
I think it will be a combination of DVD workouts and the Wii until our March 6 cruise, then on to a 6-week structured Sports Active workout. Now off to catch up with everyone's journals!

I was very pleased with the scale this morning. I'm down a pound already...woo hoo!
I only did Walk Away the Pounds (with weights) yesterday because I had a vicious case of heartburn. Not sure where it came from since I had salad and BBQ for dinner which is a normal thing for me to eat. This morning I tackled the Shred; hubby bought it since he loves Biggest Loser and Jillian, so I had watched him do it the night before. Short but really kicks your butt! I think I'm going to do it again tomorrow.
This was our 18th anniversary...can't believe it! It's especially ironic because I didn't plan to get married at all. I was perfectly content being single but DH was very gung ho on typing the knot. Then I realized, "Hmmmm, he cooks, does dishes, vaccums and does laundry. He's a keeper!" He wasn't into Disney back then but he was a roller coaster fanatic and it wasn't very difficult to win him over to the Mouse.

Thanks for all the anniversary wishes. We went to DHS before we went to Melting Pot on the 14th and wore celebratory buttons for the first time ever. So many CMs and even guests made nice comments.
I did my Shred this morning and am glad I did; we went to Epcot for a while and I joined Facebook yesterday so I spent too much time messing with my page. Lots of work to do tomorrow...ugh. Exercise will be the Shred or the Wii, depending on whether I just feel like popping the DVD in or hauling out the balance board.

Hubby is expressing some interest in my Walk Away the Pounds DVDs but he wants something that includes abs so he'll probably strick with the Shred. I don't have much trouble doing the DVD except the push-ups...UGH! Killer!
Pirates at 40 mins.? Yikes! But then again, I shouldn't be surprised because Spaceship Earth was at 35, even later in the day. Bummer 'cause I was hoping to ride it on the way out. Test Track was down for a while but they didn't stop people from getting in line so even Fastpass was literally out the door. We had FPs but I can't even imagine what the wait would have been so we gave them to another couple and bailed.

Those Shred push ups can be tough! It seems like they go on forever sometimes.
I know that you said your DH was interested in WATP, but wanted something with abs. My DH does the Power 90 workout on occasion when he can't get to the gym to workout. It's got 4 phases to it (Sculpt 1-2; 3-4 and Sweat 1-2; 3-4) and an amazing Ab Ripper 100/200 workout. I've done these workouts a few times myself and they are good workouts! We got ours on eBay a couple of years ago pretty cheap. (Note: These are not the Power 90X workouts that Tony Horton is advertising on TV right now. These workouts are the pre-cursor to that program and are tough, but not as intense as Power 90X.)
I hope you have a great evening!

So far we're both just doing Level One of the Shred but I may give Level Two a go next week. That Power 90 definitely sounds worth checking out.
Tracy, glad you enjoyed my articles. I do a lot of print work too and actually sold a book to a publisher last year. Not on travel tho'; on how to become a counselor. The Melting Pot is actually on Sand Lake Road, not too far from I-4. That area (Dr. Phillips) has some great restaurants.
DH is doing the Shred as I type this (we do it separately due to space constraints) and is using any excuse ("What are you doing, dear?") to skimp on the jumping jacks.

The Power 90 workout is a good one. The sweat section is mostly calisthenics. It reminds me a little bit of Shred, but not as intense.

LOL, I love Jillian's comments in L1 so I can just imagine L2. I might actually give it a try today.
It's funny how many people thought that guy in my old siggie was DH. It was actually Ruben Studdard, the winner of the first American Idol. He is my fave Idol and I got to meet him at a WDW media event last year (they had all the Idols come when they opened the show). I got pics with quite a few but he was the one I was actively looking for.
I think DH is getting more serious about his working out because his blood pressure is up. He was on meds and was able to stop them but it's creeping upwards again (has nothing to do with having to live with me, hee hee). Hopefully stepping up his workouts will let him avoid a repeat of the pills. It's funny how medical stuff acts as a motivator. I think my big kick in the pants was when my brother had his ruptured anyerism (sp?) and stroke last year. He's ten years older than me so I figured it was time for some preventative measures. He's still hanging in there even tho' he still has some paralysis and vision impairment...he's so stubborn that he was actually outside trying to shovel snow this winter!

I'd love to do a WDW guide but so far the only book I've been able to sell to a publisher is a career guide on becoming a counselor. Oh well, with one under my belt I'm hoping it will be easier to sell a second one. I have two guide book ideas so I need to shop them around aggressively.
It was so gorgeous today that I went out and did some biking instead of the Shred. I'll probably do some Sports Active weight training later. I was bad yesterday (didn't exercise) so I'd better behave this week....especially since we went to Chevy's for lunch and had tableside guacamole. I'm usually good there but the guac did me in.

Have you considered doing a self-published book? Selling it online? I know many only want traditional publishing, but I've sold quite a few books via self publishing (market and sell myself - websites)
Yeah FB and stuff like that - in the beginning you'll be there tons, but you'll start to pick and choose what/when you want to be there. Like anything new in the beginning - it's fresh to you.

DH has actually been nudging me to self publish because there is a built-in audience for Disney and travel-related books so I might do it if I can't find it a home with another publisher. My current publisher foucses on career guides; I wish they were more broad.
Had a 7:30 a.m. walk with my friend; saw gorgeous wild turkeys and a racoon that was acting very strange so we extended our walk to get away from it because rabies is fairly common here. I even have to get my horse an annual rabies shot, which was not needed in IL. Felt good to exercise early, but I promptly fell back to sleep when I got home and turned on the TV. Gotta get myself to bed earlier.
You're right about FB. I like the novelty but it's already getting less intriguing. I figured out how to turn off notifications from the games like Farmville because my whole news page was cluttered up with those. I'm staying far away from them because they look like big-time time drains. I have a virtual pet at Foopets and that's enough for me...only have to feed, water and pet it once a day.

If you go that route, I've found that LuLu was super easy to use - and my book is even in the Amazon marketplace, though most of my sales are via website...don't remember a lot about it - since i did it a bit ago - but sales are passive income and trickle in...I'm somewhere between 200-300 books sold at this point...nothing massive, but I'm talking to a VERY slim, targeted audience - and for me the joy was in the learning experience.
