About 3-4 weeks ago I checked National out with the DC codes for a compact, base was $140 for 8 days. Today, same car and time, base is $219. WHat a jump? I have used National in the past with great experience and rates. But I can get a compact at Dollar for $149. What's going on with National, why are they so high now as opposed to last month? And more importantly, why are they so high compared to other companies at MCO?

I've had the same problem with National. BTW, you can get a full size at Dollar for 140.00/ wk if you use the 'entertain' code.

IMHO, the car rental agencies are using some type of "yield management" program to set their rates. That's why they change so frequently. It's similar to the system that airlines use. Rates go up and down depending on the supply. I don't work for National (or any car agency, so this is just my opinion).

I usually make a reservation as soon as I have booked my flights, especially if I spot a reasonable rate. Then I periodically check to see if I can get a better rate. If I do, I cancel the old one. I have no loyalty to any one company. I just go with the best rate from a reputable company that has cars located in the terminal. Good luck! Hope you find a good rate.

I think its worth checking the rates constantly - maybe even daily. We have an EA reservation for the first week of Aug in California (LAX), and today my rate dropped again. $150 (after taxes, etc.) for full-size, EA for 7 days. I'm thrilled!
