View Full Version : Slowly caving...(Kindle-related)

Ever since the podcast taping, I've been thinking about caving. No, I'm not talking about any major life event, here. Instead, I'm rethinking my entire attitude towards the Kindle.
I left the book I'm reading, The Lost Symbol, at home when I flew to FL on Friday because it was so thick and heavy. I was cutting it tight as it was with my carry-on luggage and didn't want another thing weighing me down. I guess a Kindle would come in handy there as well as when my flight was delayed Sunday night.
After seeing it at the recording, now I'm starting to recognize more of the positives. I'm starting to wonder if I could find myself adjusting to it. My main issue is that it doesn't look nor feel like a book. I love book covers. They're bright and colorful (yes, I realize that you can't "judge a book by its cover," but still). I just don't know if I could give that up.
On the flip side, it seems to be great for traveling. My only concern would be damaging it en route. I am paranoid as it is about my iPhone not getting squished. I don't know if I'd want another thing to watch. Do they have hard enough cases to prevent damage while in a bag?
Okay, give it your best shot. Persuade me that the Kindle is a good choice.

First the i-phone.... now the kindle.
;)
I have a kindle, and love it. It's a good cave, Nikki

:rolleyes1 Nikki--- you are being a bad influence on me. I bought a snuggie for someone as a gift.
I'm considering getting an I-touch next year since we have several different destination trips on our schedule. NC Beast would love a Kindle--he loves reading.

If you have an iphone why not download the kindle app. Try it that way first and then if you decide that you like it you can then invest in a real kindle.

I have the Kindle iPhone app and think it is great! It is much cheaper (free) than buying the Kindle and as the pp stated, it is a great way to try it out!

Someone gave me a Kindle for a present and I am trying to get use to it. Downloaded Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin which was cool but I have yet to finish it. Normally if it was a book, it would be done by now. I like the feel of a book in my hand rather than an electronic device.

I find the whole idea of the kindle really cool, but I'm not sure I could get into it. I spend enough time over the course of the day reading words on a screen. It's nice to have an actual book in my hands, and I think it's easier on my eyes at night than trying to read an illuminated screen.
I haven't actually TRIED it though. I might try the kindle app just to see what I think about it on the iphone as a trial.

The Kindle is not illuminated in any way. You will need an external light source just as if you were reading a paper book and wanted to read in a low light setting..
The e-ink technology mimics paper.
The Kindle app for the iPhone is an illuminated screen and might cause eye strain.

I'm going to skip downloading the app then and just take a good look at the kindle on Christmas Day (one of my family members is getting one).

Not a salesman at all....it's just a device that has given many hours of enjoyment and made my life easier.
If it does that for me...it might do it for others.
Still holding out for Harry Potter . . . ;)
Got to admit - DW loves hers.

If you're concerned about damage, consider this. DW bought one of the Oberon covers that Kevin recommended. She's carried in her purse ever since. It protects it beautifully and doesn't take up much more space. It's much nicer than the Kindle cover we bought from Amazon.
Since DW has been pregnant, she carries the Kindle with her everywhere. It comes in particularly handy in doctor waiting rooms!
With the competition from the Sony Reader and the Barnes & Noble Nook, I only see the Kindle getting better. We got a firmware upgrade that (I think) allowed for bigger fonts and native pdf reading.
This interview (http://www.psfk.com/2009/03/jeff-bezos-on-charlie-rose.html) with Jeff Bezos by Charlie Rose helped convince us to purchase one. Lots of questions answered.

There is also a free Kindle app for the PC, which works well. One of the cool features of having the kindle and the apps is that no matter which device you are reading the book on you can sync it to where you left off. So if you are out and read a few chapters on your iPhone when you get home the Kindle can sync up and put you in the same exact place you left off.

I was amazed at the sheer number of books I had during my move. Granted many were cook books, but I have a lot of pleasure reading books. More then I thought I had. After seeing Kevin's and Dodie's Kindles, I am so on board with this technology. I also loved the Oberon cover. They are a piece of art in themselves.
I see a Kindle in my not to distant future.
Now if Verizon will only get a version of an iPhone......

Another Kindle lover here...
Jimmy wanted to buy me one right away, since I'm constantly reading, but I kept putting him off. I thought I would miss 'real' books too much, also.
Instead, now I have the perfect mix. I'll read a book or two on my Kindle, then I'll grab a book or two from the library. I'm constantly going back and forth. I agree that there's nothing like the feel of a book in your hands, but you'll find yourself craving picking that kindle up, too. I couldn't live without either option.
And, as for the traveling aspect, I went the cheap route and bought a $30 cover from Amazon. But, it's worked out perfectly for me. It's just a plain leather cover, but it's always managed to protect my Kindle when I throw it in amongst my multitudes of CRAP when we travel!! ;)
I think you'll love it...I really do. As someone else stated previously, it's a good cave!

I honestly can't rave about the Kindle enough. I LOVE mine. I even bought a new purse that would have a pocket just for the Kindle.
I have the Amazon cover, and it has been hauled from Minneapolis to Philadelphia (twice), Fort Myers (twice), Orlando (twice), and numerous road trips. I haven't had any trouble with it.
As far as giving up "real" books, who says you have to? I go the the library and get books, as well as still buy a few, and read those as well. I still go into B&N frequently, usually just to get an idea of what books are out there, then I make note of them and download the free sample on the kindle. The Kindle just comes in very handy when traveling, waiting at the doctors office, waiting to pick up the kids at school, hockey practice...you get the idea.
I do have tendonitis in my right arm that has acted up when reading physical books - I can read a good book in one day, usually staying up late at night, and I am asking for trouble if it is a hard back book from the library. The Kindle has helped with this immensely.

I haven't read ahead, so this might be a repeat, but why not try the Kindle app for the iPhone to see if you like the e-reader concept, then decide?
The app is free, and you can even download a free book from Amazon, so you wouldn't be out any money.
I don't have a Kindle (or an iPhone), but I do use the Kindle app (and e-reader) on my Touch a LOT. It's nice having 20+ books at the ready, and for no extra weight.

One advantage to a "real" book is that the battery never dies! :rotfl:
Sorry, I just had to get that jibe in.....
The other question I would consider is which would hurt more? When I read in bed I usually fall asleep and the book tips forward and hits me in the nose....:lmao:

I would strongly recommend doing some research prior to purchasing a Nook.
The reviews are not good and the reports of truly bad customer service are abundant.
Visit Barnes and Noble's forum dedicated to the Nook to check out what folks are saying.

It's possible that I will be getting Deb a Kindle for Christmas. We have both know about the Kindle since the original Oprah show with the 1st gen model.

I adore my Kindle.
I am very clumsy and bought an Oberon cover that is beautiful and sturdy. I've dropped the Kindle 3 tmes since I've gotten it and the cover protected it from damage.
I make sure it's fully charged before I head to the airport and carry my charging cord in my carryon so if I do forget to charge it or it runs out of charge, I can just find an outlet and charge it up.
The main negative for me is I'm not comfortable taking it to a pool because someone could steal it when I leave it to hop in the pool but I've got plenty of regular books at home to bring with me and re-read in that instance.
It's been the best birthday present ever.

I didn't think I wanted one...until I dragged Stephen King's latest book to OKW this weekend for DAP and our family Christmas visit. That thing added way too much poundage to a weekend bag-and is cumbersome to hold.
I do worry about missing "real" books though...like Julie I love the smell of a new book and I also love the feel of the pages.
I'll be watching this thread to see how it goes...

I think the one thing that the Kindle has a hard time competing with is serendipity. It really has nothing to compete with going into a brick and mortar store and simply browsing. The suggestion feature on Kindle isn't nearly as good (at least for me) as say the Netflix system is.
If Amazon is able to do that somehow (copy the Netflix suggestion system) and implement it in a Kindle friendly browsing manner, I'd be thrilled.
It's one reason I keep a close eye on the DisBooks thread- so many good suggestions!

I asked Santa for a kindle for Christmas. It arrived over two weeks ago and don't tell my husband but I did pick
it up and hold it for a few minutes. I can't wait until I get to load it with books. It will get a good first road test when we drive to Miami on January 3rd
I just bought a Kindle :woohoo:. I have been on the fence for some time and finally decided to take the plunge.
Those of you on the fence may want to check out The Kindle Chronicles podcast http://www.thekindlechronicles.com/

Amazing! I ordered my Kindle at 5:30 last night (free 2 day shipping). It was shipped from KY and I'm in NY. At a little after 10 am this morning, the doorbell rings... I'm holding my new Kindle:cool1:

You shouldn't have any problem. Purchasing books is almost too easy. It's also easy to drag and drop existing books to the Kindle.
If you get Calibre (a free program) you can convert most non drm formats to mobi and load them directly to the Kindle. It will also get select periodicals off the web, convert them to mobi, and load them on your Kindle. It worked like a charm.
Good luck and happy reading.

Thanks for the tip! Our library offers e-books, but they aren't comparable with the Kindle. Would the Calibre program fix that? I'm assuming I download it directly to my computer?

Unfortunately, the library Overdrive system uses a drm protected e-Pub format. and Calibre will not convert it.

I've always loved book - how they look, how they feel. However, I finally bought a Kindle and my only complaint is that I waited so long to get one! I don't miss the actual physical books. I still have a selection of books I'm keeping on my bookshelves, and I will still look in book stores for deals. The Kindle is SO easy to hold - much easier than dealing with a book, especially heavy ones.
Just cave in - you won't regret it!!

Amazon has stopped selling the 6 inch Kindle that's good only in the US in favor of an International version.
You might want to check with Amazon to see if it would work in your particular location.
Amazon has also just released a Kinflr for PC program which is free. You can download book from Amazon through the PC program (Mac version is is supposed to be coming soon) and then transfer them to your Kindle.
Amazon only sells books. They do not rent books.

As Kevin said if you have Kindle for PC you can deliver the book file to it. You can also choose Transfer via Computer as the delivery method. That will download a Kindle book file to your computer and then you transfer it to your USB connected Kindle.
I really have to find someone who lives close to me so I can hold it. I think that will help me decide whether or not to get one.

my mom transferred all her amex points to barnes and noble and keeps asking me if i want the nook (so she can use up her points)...
i think the nook has the same whispernet issue for me (different underlying phone company, but same concept)..

whenever my mom visits us, she always asks for a wish list...but we never ask for anything (i can't stand the idea of my 82 year old mom running around and buying us lots of stuff)....but maybe i'll bend my rule this time....my eyes are really shot and it seems it might be a good solution for me...i used to inhale books, but haven't read any for a quite a while due to my aging eyes...

I dont want to discourage anyone from getting the ereader of their choice.
That being said....I would suggest you do some research prior to investing in a Nook.
B&N has their own discussion forum set up for the Nook and the reaction from the folks that have just recently received their Nook's has not been good.
The reviews from the NYTimes, CNet and the rest of the folks that review tech stuff have been much less than favorable.
There have also been rteports of B&N's customer service department outright lying to to people in regards to the Nook.
Again....there are many, reviews out there.....some good and some bad. Just make sure you know what you are buying.
The other thind I would suggest is that you make a list of 5 or 10 books that interest you and check B&N vs Amazon vs Sony and see who has the best book prices.
B&N and Amazon are about the same price. Sony has a lower and higher priced model.
After you purchase the device....it's all going to boil down to who has the books you want at the best price.

I was on the fence for a long time. I finally bought the Kindle. I demoed the Nook and the Sonys a few times and all I'll say is there really is no competition. It's not just the hardware. It's Amazon's customer service, the web site, the whispernet, the related software. Bottom line, it all works and it's a proven system. If it's an e-reader you want, there is no reason to go anywhere else at this time.
I had an Alton Brown like aversion to unitaskers. I needed to come to grips with the fact that I just wanted to read books and save my back the pain of schlepping the added weight of books or even my netbook on my daily commute.
As Kevin said, check out the boards and read the reviews. There is a wealth of information out there. I'm glad I didn't delay my Kindle purchase any longer.

I have caved and will be ordering a Kindle this week. I'd like to order it in time for Christmas but not sure I'll be able to $$ wise. The main thing that was holding me back was buying the books on Amazon while I can buy them in BJ's or Walmart for a touch cheaper. However, there are a lot of books that are free on Amazon that will make up the difference as well as the ones that are $9.99 on Amazon but still over $10 at Bj's and Walmart or Target.
I also moved recently and donated A TON of books to a local church because I just had sooo many of them. The ones I wanted to keep are sitting in a box in the garage because I don't have the room for them in the house.
I also like the idea of the internet browser on it, though I know it's not the best but it's better than nothing which is what I have no.
Also with a baby on the way, I think it will be nice to have in the hospital as well. Plus with travel and throwing it in my diaper bag for appointments, going to the park etc.

I really wish that there was a store where you could see the thing before you order it. I'd like to touch it, see how the pages look, and see how it feels in my hand. That's a LOT of money to spend to find out that I'm not going to be comfortable holding it, or comfortable reading off the "page". I'm a really, really fast reader and I'm wondering if the page turning is going to drive me nuts because I'll have to do it quickly. And of course, I could send it back-but that's a pain in the butt-taking it to the shipping place, getting the credit back on my card....
Anyone know if the Nook thing is close enough to the Kindle to get an idea what it's like by checking that one out?

I have a question for you. Once you've purchased a book and read it-can you move it to your PC and "shelve it"? I know 1500 books seems like a lot-but if you're going through them quickly you will run out of room on the thing at some point.

Also....Amazon makes returning the Kindle very easy if you do not want to keep it.
I bought the DX and decided to not keep it. It was returned and off my card in approximately 10 days.
I have a question for you. Once you've purchased a book and read it-can you move it to your PC and "shelve it"? I know 1500 books seems like a lot-but if you're going through them quickly you will run out of room on the thing at some point.
You can store your books on your PC. You can also use Amazon's virtual bookshelf. Once you have purchased a book from Amazon, you can delete it and re-downlaod it as many times as you like. Amazon will store your books.
Even at 3 books a week....1500 books will take you 500 weeks to max out. Thats approximately 10 years. I can guarantee you that technology will change enough in 10 years that you are going to want a new device.
My guess is that you will get a new Kindle before you fill the current model
And if you do fill your Kindle with 1500 books,,the cost of reading those 1500 books using your Kindle (not counting the cost of the book, just the device) will average out to 17 cents a book

My partner and I love our kindles.
I can't say enough about the kindle.
We love to read and spend a small fortune on books.
We took a lot into consideration before purchasing because the price is dear.
We weighed the pros and cons and found the pros to be greater...
one time fee for whisper net, saving trees, less clutter, quick access to thousands of reading materials, and light weight.
We have enjoyed the kindles. We share them when one of us gets a book that we enjoy we swap it is convinient for us because we live in the same household. Anywho... I guess from my response it is obvious what I think.
Peace,
Carla

The Kindle is a great, great cave! I love reading books, and was on the fence about buying a Kindle because I loved the experience of holding and reading a paper book. About 1 1/2 years ago, I took the plunge and bought my first Kindle (I bought a Kindle 1, and now have a Kindle 2).
Now I almost dread holding a really thick paper book (like the new Stephen King book) and dragging it around town, to doctor visits, to the Parks, since it's so easy to carry my lil Kindle instead. I also enjoy the ability to change the type of book I have, simply by backing out of one and clicking on another - far better than bringing tons of paper books in case I finish the one I'm reading or in case I'm not in the mood for the book I've got started.
If you're worried about protecting your Kindle, I highly recommend buying one of the gorgeous Oberon Kindle covers. It also feels a little more like reading a regular book when you read using the Oberon cover. ...and if you want to add protection to the Oberon cover, get a Borsa Bella quilted Kindle bag. They're gorgeous and well made and add another layer of padding and protection for the Kindle and the Oberon leather cover.
Let the Kindle/Oberon/Borsa Bella enabling begin! :rotfl2:

It's the way books and updates are delivered wirelessly.
It's basically cell phone technology but there is no fee involved. Wireless delievery is included in the price of the book.
Turning your whispernet off when not downloading to your Kindle increases your battery life tremendously....infact pretty much doubles it.

Turning your whispernet off when not downlaod to your Kindle increases your battery life tremendously....infact pretty much doubles it.
THis is true of a lot of wireless devices - cell phones, laptops, etc.
If you can't make use of the wireless feature, turning it off is a great benefit. The wireless transmitters use a fair amount of power - especially cell devices, which when signal strength is low or non-existent, use more power while they try and search for a connection point.
I often have to turn my cell phone off while at the data center, which is at a colocation facility inside a giant locked cage. Unless I'm outside the cage, I get zero signal and my battery drains FAST. If you don't know what a Faraday cage is, perhaps you've seen a lighting demonstration (like at the Museum of Science in Boston) where the demonstrator is inside a birdcage, and can't get electrocuted even touching the inside of the cage. Same basic thing happens with radio waves.
If you can easily turn on/off Wi-Fi on your iPhone/IPod Touch so its only on when you need it, you will probably see improved battery life.
Same for Bluetooth on cell phones. I get at least twice the standby life with the bluetooth turned off.
This science lesson brought to you by the letters D, I and S.

Amazon has a 30 day "no questions asked" return policy.
You can download book samples and free books at will and if you are unsatisfied with the product and the way it syncs with your iPhone....Just return it for a full refund.

Well, I still don't have a Kindle. I ordered it on Dec 22nd, with a guaranteed delivery date of 12/24. I watched it like a hawk, and at 7:38 am on 12/24 it left Leesburg FL for delivery. (that's about an hour from me) I get home from work at 2:30-no delivery ticket on the door. Check the computer-still says the same thing-left Leesburg in the morning "out for delivery". At 10:30 pm I finally called UPS and asked them what was going on. I was told that they had until midnight to deliver and it was still scheduled for 12/24. I finally went to bed at 12:30-having given up. The website now shows "rescheduled delivery date" 12/28-but that just happened today. It's not like there was a weather issue or anything...this is Florida. No blizzards here and none at any point on the delivery line either.
I did report this whole thing to Amazon, and they gave me a $20 credit for downloaded books. Clearly, I could have avoided this by ordering earlier-however, I trusted Amazon's reputation. Sure, it was likely UPS that messed up, but Amazon is the one that makes the "promise" so it reflects back on them.
Just a word of warning to everyone else when it comes to big ticket items or even small ticket but important items ordered around the holidays. Don't trust that guarantee-order that item early or try and get it somewhere where you pick it up yourself.

So Nikki...have you made a decision yet? Just wondering.
I received my Kindle as a birthday present in June and love it. It is so nice when you travel. When we go to Disney we are usually there about 10 days which would require about 3 books in the suitcase or carry on. Now it's just the Kindle in the carry on.
Kevin didn't steer you wrong with the iPhone he wouldn't with the Kindle?

Kathy, were you not following the infamous iPhone thread? Rofl You should know me by now!! ;)
Suzette, I'm still trying to decide. The difference between this and the iPhone decision is not the money factor, but experience. Nikki...I can understand where you are coming from. I sometimes feel guilty for reading a real book when I think of how much my parents spent on that gift for me!
One of the biggest adjustments for me was wondering around a book store looking for a good book. I realized I don't have to give that up. I still do it and just make a note of the book and check it out on the Kindle when I have a chance.
I told my husband last night that I was REALLY happy I have a Kindle right now. I never read Stephen King but for some reason I was drawn to his new book Under the Doom which is only available in hardback in the book store right now and weighs in at 19 pounds. Thank goodness for the Kindle! Who would want to lug that around?

I know I said this way upthread, but I'm serious. Try the Kindle app for the iPhone. Buy a book. Try the whole e-reader concept out that way. If you hate it, you're out the cost of the book. The app itself is free. Heck, you might even be able to download a free book, then it costs nothing to try it out.
Yeah, I know. Kindles are better, with bigger screen & all that, but when you're just testing the waters, sometimes the trial versions will give you enough of a taste.
It certainly can't hurt, y'know?

Do your research before you buy any device.
Also keep in mind that with your Kindle, you can download a book for free from anywhere with a cell signal.
With an iPad, you will need to be in a WiFi hotspot unless you buy the model with 3G (for which you pay a monthly charge).
Kindle $259 - free book downloads from anywhere in the US
iPad - minimum $499 but if you want the 3G model $629 plus monthly fee.
Also...make sure you check the price of ebooks that interest you. This is a good idea no matter which ereader you choose.

the iPad seems completely ridiculous to me...
from what i've read so far, it only has 10 hours of power....that's nutty...
i guess when i'm in the states in July, i'll check out the Kindle...see if it's workable for me over here..
I really want one, especially since it seems so good for people with bad eyes - mine didn't use to be bad...it's an age thing for me...but since i've needed reading glasses, i've barely picked up a book -they're just not comfortable for me to read anymore..
Kevin's descriptions of how great the kindle is despite his eye problems sounds very promising to me...

After seeing the iPad, I am even happier with my decision to purchase the Kindle.
Like Kevin said up-thread somewhere, when I sit down to read-I want to read. I don't need my e-reader to download music, surf the web and play games. I have plenty of other devices around the house that can do those things. Looking at the screen on the iPad, I think it would be annoying on the eyes after a while-too "glary".
The thing I really love about this gadget is that I forget about it. Once I start reading a book, I get into the book and forget about the delivery system. I'm just reading. I think that the iPad would never let me forget that I was reading on a gadget.

Hi, I just finished reading all the great things that all of you have said about your Kindles and I does sound wonderful. I received the Sony ereader for Christmas and just love it. I know that I can't download books over the net but I can borrow books from my local library which is something I wouldn't be able to do with a Kindle. I just wanted to put in my two cents for my little Sony. I'm absolutely loving my ereader, something I never thought I would. So whatever reader you decide to get, you'll really enjoy it. I can't wait to take it on vacation, one reader, lots of books. How cool it that?

I have to disagree. Something to keep in mind is that you have to compare apples to apples (pun not intended). You compared the Kindle at $259 to the ipad at $499. However, the Kindle at $259 has a six inch display. While I have only used a DX, I have seen others with the normal Kindle and it is tiny. It seems to me like too small of a screen. So if you compare the DX, which has the same screen size as the iPad, (9.7" diagonal) you come up with a price comparison of $489 for the Kindle, and (if you want 3G) $629 (plus service). Add to that the fact that the iPad base storage size of 16 GB is roughly four times that of the Kindle, and even if you only want it as an eBook reader, it seems to me that the iPad is a better choice.
That said, the Kindle may be better if you have issues staring at a screen for as long as you want to read for at a time. Just wanted to point out a few flaws in the price comparisons.
P.S. We all know the apple logo on the back is sexier ;)

Ok...I'm willing to use your parameters.
The Kindle DX is $498. The iPad is $629 with 3g which requires a service plane. A limited plan is available, but an unlimited plan is $30 per month.
That $30 per month adds $360 per year to the cost of your DX, bringing it to $929 per year....or almost double the cost of the DX.
Do your research before buying any device.
Also...we have not seen the price of books for iBook. That could also be an issue.

I agree on the service cost, but I do wonder how much the average Kindle customer uses the 3G service. I think most could get by on WiFi alone. Even the $15/250MB plan would be enough to download about 200 ebooks (if the kindle hard drive has an effective size of 3.3GB and can hold 3500 ebooks, thats about 1MB per book, so to be conservative I used 200 instead of closer to 250 books). I don't know, but the thought of 200 books in a month scares me to say the least, so if you figure that price per month, $15*12 months= $180, which is, of course, still a lot more than free, but not nearly so much as the unlimited plan.
As far as the book pricing goes, it seems (from all sources I have heard of) that many Kindle Publishers are switching to an agency model which will effectively have prices close to if not equivalent on the devices. (Which of course angers Amazon who would prefer the flat $9.99)
Oh how I enjoy debating technology prices! :rotfl2:
(P.S. Nice show today....and you too are a genius, despite what other people on the boards might say :p)

Hi Michael,
The Kindle is not available in stores. It must be ordered from Amazon.
The good news is that they have a liberal 30 day return policy with no questions asked.
If you'd like to give it a shot, you can also download one the free classic books in order to get a feel for the Kindle.
If you add an Oberon cover, you kindle will look and smell like a classic leather bound book.:thumbsup2

truly a wonder and really fantastic for age-challenged eyes (as mine alas are)..
the person whose kindle i was playing with ( ), didn't know how to use it, so i was explaining it to her (she's had it for several months, and had to bring it to me, in israel, to explain it to her  )..
anyway, as i was showing it to her, i said, "well if you were in the US, we could wirelessly browse around the amazon store and search for books etc., but the whispernet won't work here..."
but i proceeded to show her how to type in a search, even though it wouldn't work here, just so that she could see how to search when she's back to the states....
and oh oh....when i hit enter, IT WORKED   ...
which means, it was accessing one of the phone companies here ( i have no clue which one)..
which, i assume, means that she's going to be hit with roaming charges on her amazon account....
i didn't know that you could use the kindle on whispernet outside of the US...
but fact is, i did when i was showing her the kindle..
i quickly turned off the wireless so that we wouldn't inadvertantly roam again..
but just a warning to anyone traveling overseas with their kindle...
make sure to disable the wireless....

Besides books, you can also put on audibooks, PDFs and images.
Also, Kindle can read most of the regular books to you. While the text-to-speech technology certainly is not perfect yet I still find it amazing how natural it sounds most of the time.
Many people have mentioned here that they think they would miss the book feel. However, when I read on my Kindle it just feels so natural and I even catched myself when I started to move my hand to turn a page before I realize that it's not a real book and I just have to press the turn page button :-)

so my guess is, given what you quoted, the problem is they don't have an agreement with any of the cellphone companies in israel.....
i believe that whispernet sits on the sprint network....so it would seem that at least one of the cell phone companies here has a relationship with Sprint, and that's what got picked up by the network here...
since there is no agreement, there will be roaming charges against someone...the question is, who will be hit by them...possibly her amazon account....or maybe amazon or maybe sprint will be stuck with it (for not disabling the system)....or maybe the local company will be left holding the bag...
very interesting....

The PC thing they were referring to is to read Kindle books on your PC, in the absence of a Kindle. So you could go buy a Kindle Book from your computer, and read it all on your computer.

While Amazon is not yet shipping the Kindle to Israel, 3G coverage seems to be perfect there, so she should be able to access the Amazon Bookstore from her Kindle there. Also Wikipedia can be accessed internationally as well.
Interestingly, the GSM network which they have on some cruise ships seems to have the same identification as in the US, since on our Med cruise I was able to access the internet through the Kindle. Very slow but still interesting to read my e-mails as the onboard internet rate was $.75 per minute!

and you never were charged for the internet use on your amazon account?
in the manual that came with her kindle it says that internet browsing on the kindle isn't free, though it doesn't state how much it costs...

Where does it say there is a charge for internet usage? I quickly looked over the manual, but didn't see anything about it.
Also, if you google Kindle Free Internet, you will find tons of entries of people mentioning the free internet access. It's actually also an important point in some reviews.

The following is copied directly from the manual that came with the kindle dx:
Wireless Connectivity
General. Amazon provides wireless connectivity free of charge to you for certain content shopping and downloading services on your Device. You may be charged a fee for wireless connectivity for your use of other wireless services on your Device, such as Web browsing and downloading of personal files, should you elect to use those services. We will maintain a list of current fees for such services in the Kindle Store. Amazon reserves the right to discontinue wireless connectivity at any time or to otherwise change the terms for wireless connectivity at any time, including, but not limted to (a) limiting the number and size of data files that may be transferred using wireless connectivity and (b) changing the amount and terms applicable for wirless connectivity charges.

That may be a generic phrase allowing them to charge for it in the future, but at the moment fact is that internet browsing is free if it is not disabled as per location setting (basically anywhere outside the US I think).
However, Wikipedia is usable anywhere with coverage.

when i read it i thought that's probably what it was - lawyers covering their future derrieres....
that's cool that the connectivity is free...
so now i'm wondering what the story is on this kindle that's been working here...
i'm going to try calling the kindle information phone number to see if anyone knows whether there are charges for using it here or not...
interesting..

Just purchased the Kindle 2 global edition!!! So excited to get it. I already have the Kindle app for the iPhone and love it, just wish the display was larger (I speed read and I'm developing carpal tunnel syndrome from turning the page so often. LOL)
Just waiting to order the Oberon color until I am sure I do not want the DX version.
I went with the 6'' display because of the added weight of the DX and a few reports of keyboard buttons placement.
I can hardly wait!!

Only thing which will be charged are, in the US the price for the books, newspaper subscriptions and if you mail documents directly onto the Kindle.
If your main location is the US and you take the Kindle to other countries, there is a separate $2 delivery fee on top of the book price per book purchased.
If your main location is outside the US, there is no separate delivery fee, however, the book prices are just inflated by $2 :-) So you won't find any free books on amazon because they will at least cost $2.

i'm wondering if there are roaming charges for using it wirelessly...
i had been led to believe that it simply wouldn't work by wireless..
that you had to use it connected by USB to the computer...
so now that i see it works by wireless, i want to call amazon to find out if there's a charge for that....

no, there are no roaming charges, as the internet wont't work outside the US.
And for the books you already pay more when buying them outside the US.
