Welcome to my oft-requested, much anticipated, eagerly awaited (all much to my surprise, mind you) 2010 pre-trip report. I’m hopeful that with the participation of all of you witty DISers out there, together we can make it a fun forum.

A great big :welcome: to everyone coming over from my 2009 trip report, "I Paid Someone $5 for a Catchy Trip Report Title, and This is All I Got" (http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=32712258&postcount=1). If you haven’t read it, that’s okay, but when you get a moment, why not take some time and check it out? After all, the link to it is right there. Just three sentences back. Now, don’t count sentences…just go back and click. Click it! Click it!

It’s okay to lurk here, but it’s always nice to post that you’re reading along. And if you do, I promise to give you a :welcome: in return!

This 2010 trip will be our fourth family trip to WDW. Part of the trip will be an incentive award for my wife’s direct-selling business, and for the remainder we’ll use DVC points. I don’t think I should spell-out the name of the direct-selling business, which isn’t too hard to figure out if you’re familiar with their line of kitchen tools, but I will undoubtedly need to refer to it a lot as I go along here in this PTR, so from now on I’ll call it “PChef”. ;)

This leads to me discuss how I arrived at the PTR title, “The Most Expensive Free Trip Ever”. We had a few other good ones vying for contention. One, which followed the train of thought from my last trip report title, was “I’m Determined Not to Have a Lame Trip Report Title This Time -- Ooops, Too Late”. But I thought, if I don’t break the cycle now, I’ll never be able to. Plus, it’s kind of long. Another title contender (Ha! Literally, a title contender) referred to all of the pressure the readers of my 2009 trip report were putting on me to begin a PTR for 2010. I (and others simultaneously!) came up with, The “Because You DISers Made Me PTR” PTR. This was a very tempting title as well, and I had hard time deciding. I asked my family what they thought, and in typical fashion, we had no clear winner. In the end, as you can see, I went with the one that was the most descriptive of the trip (and the one my wife liked best -- gotta keep her happy!).

So, what makes this upcoming trip a paradoxical, oxymoronic “expensive free trip”? Several things…first, the award is a trip for four people and we’re a family of five, so one person will have to be “bought in”, which is expensive in itself (maybe I’ll get into that in a future post). Secondly, a new development for this trip is that rather than supplying air tickets to trip recipients, PChef is including a “travel allowance”, and the amount will probably only cover about half of our airfare. Thirdly, we’re not sure yet, but because there are five of us we may have to pay for an extra hotel room, which we may split with another family. That’s yet to be worked-out, but potential additional $$. Add to that the cost meals, souvenirs, upgrading tickets, etc., etc., and well, you get the idea. And forgive me if I sound like I’m complaining. I know lots of you out there wouldn’t sneeze at receiving a travel allowance, a few nights’ hotel paid for, and four 3-day tickets. And I don’t begrudge PChef in what they’re including or not including in the award, either. Had Judy been able to earn a higher-level award, we would get a bigger travel allowance and nicer accommodations. Having different tiers of awards is actually a good way to be able to include all types of achievers and reward them appropriately. It’s just that other people hear about these trips and exclaim, “I can’t believe you won a free trip!!”, a statement with a couple of problems. First (here I got with these lists again, what is up with me?), when someone refers to it as “winning”, as if her name was drawn at random in a lottery, it makes the hair stand up on the back of my wife’s neck and her eye twitch, ‘cause it was a lot of hard work. She prefers to say she “earned” the trip, not “won” it. And then the “free” thing again. But the higher the award you achieve, the better the reward.

Okay, it appears that the guy who had nothing to say in a PTR is rambling like a madman :crazy2:, so let’s get to some specifics:

When – Sat. June 12 or Sun. June 13 through Sun. June 20, 2010

Where – Split-stay Coronado Springs and AKL Kidani Village

Who – the same cast of characters as last time…myself, DW Judy, DD16 Lauren, DD13 Marlene, DS10 James. Here we are, out at the Polynesian’s monorail stop after a great ‘Ohana dinner in 2009.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/Disney_2009_Day_7/img_1328a.jpg

And, the “Who” may be extended to bunches and bunches of PChef consultants and families. If you’re also in the World the week we’re there, you’ll know something is up, believe me.

I was a little afraid to write a PTR, in that I didn’t know what I’d even write about, but in thinking about it, there are lots of things yet to be worked out. For example, it’s December and Judy hasn’t officially earned the trip yet :scared:, so we’ve got to follow that progress. She also has other consultants below her in the reporting hierarchy who are close to earning the trip, but may not make it. Then, there’s the whole aspect of traveling with her PChef consultant friends, and how do we make touring plans and ADRs around that?

So, stay tuned!

So....what Disney planning thoughts are floating around in my head that I can update you with? It seems like so many things are "to be determined".

Update on earning the PChef trip

As of now, Judy should have met all the requirements to earn the trip. :woohoo: This year (and maybe last year, I forget) consultants have to reach a certain number of points (you get points for sales, recruiting, promoting, etc.) and have a certain number of recruits. She is actually over in points, but needed one more recruit (who had to meet minimum sales to count as "qualified"). So, we're good to go there.

We're watching the progress of a couple of ladies under Judy in the hierarchy. One, is in a similar situation as Judy was, so we'll have to see. She has five kids, so assuming she earns it, that's the family we'll probably be splitting an extra hotel room with. The other, appears to be too far away points-wise to make it. It's actually very sad because they've got a couple of boys who are the perfect age to go and I was so looking forward to seeing them experience WDW for the first time. She had more than enough recruits, but is short in points, and there's just not enough time left in the year. That's one problem with these incentive trips, if you don't make it it can be very de-motivating.

When to arrive?

The DVC portion of the trip is booked, set in stone. And the PChef portion has specific days too, but they begin on a Sunday. We still have Annual Passes from last year's trip that'll be good for while we're there, so why not show up on Saturday? Wait, hold the phone! I saw that there's a 5K run at the Animal Kingdom on that Saturday, I'd love to do that....so, fly in on Friday? Um, Friday is the last day of school. And there are no "snow days" built into the calendar, so the last day of school could actually be during the PChef portion of the trip. It better not be!

Arriving on Saturday looks like the most likely scenario right now, while crossing our fingers for no snow days, or forgiveness to miss the last day of school if it gets extended. But even that could add another hotel room change to our already split-stay trip.

Tickets

I think this is one area I've got figured out. Now, you astute readers I'm sure noticed that I mentioned above that we have Annual Passes, but in my introductory post said that we'd be upgrading tickets. :confused3 Well, as part of the trip package we'll receive 3-day tickets, but I doubt that they're non-expiring, PChef probably wouldn't pay for that when they're intended to be used right then. So, my plan is to use our Annual Passes while we're there, but upgrade the tickets we get from PChef to add the non-expiration option, and to add some days for use next time. ;)

Park Plan

I wanted to include some park plan info. in this post, but I'm not where I can access it at the moment, so it'll have to wait. But, I can tell you that by looking at the park hours that were recently issued, I got it down to a choice of two parks for each day. But I have no idea how much touring Judy will want to do with her consultant friends, so the whole thing could be up in the air. Not a good thing, for a planner like me. Times a'wastin'!!

ADRs

This is the scariest. Actually, our ADR window for the PChef portion of the trip opens today, but we don't have reservations made yet because PChef won't do that until the incentive earning period closes. But it doesn't matter anyway, because I don't have the park plan done. Our ADR window for the Kidani portion of the trip opens Friday, but again, I don't have a plan! I think I want to do Hoop de doo for our last night, to go out with something special, but other than that, I don't know yet.

Well there you have it -- a look inside my brain, and the amorphous mass of unknowns and issues it contains.

You can totally do your own thing. There will be exclusive EMH one day, I'm pretty sure Monday, at MK. (I pity the poor people who show up for rope drop at the regular opening time that day.) But it'll be a madhouse, it's amazing how many PChef people and family members will be there. So, I'm thinking we may go elsewhere. Then, there'll be a dinner at an exclusive evening at AK, on Tuesday.

But Judy will probably at least want to do some meals with friends.

We're 180 days out from Sunday, June 13th, so I took a look at the park hours and decided to book something for the evening at Epcot -- I'd like to do a little more touring around the World Showcase this year. I got an evening ADR for Biergarten. We did it last year, but it was a big hit with the family.

I'm glad you got here early too. It's only getting long because I'm rambling and having trouble making decisions. And at this point I can only make ADRs one day at a time.

a look inside my brain, and the amorphous mass of unknowns and issues it contains.

I love that. That sounds like my brain. Except it doesn't even know what it doesn't know, nor does it know it's issues!

We LOVED HDDR! Highly recommend it.

I can relate to the ADR stress. Granted I'm still 2 months out but then if our dates change...aack!

CSR has rooms that sleep 5, don't they? That's always the issue for us. 'cept we are 6, which is worse. Granted any time I have tried to actually BOOK one, they were not available.

We're 180 days out from Sunday, June 13th, so I took a look at the park hours and decided to book something for the evening at Epcot -- I'd like to do a little more touring around the World Showcase this year. I got an evening ADR for Biergarten. We did it last year, but it was a big hit with the family.
One down!
I'm with ya here, I also didn't get to do much touring of the World Showcase last time I was there. You made a good choice. :thumbsup2

:confused3Who cares if it turns into a novel! That's the beauty of it being your PTR! You can say as little or as much as you want. Sounds like you like to "talk" out your ideas/thoughts, I'm the same way. So talk away! :chat:
As for your ADR's being made one day at a time....if your worried you won't get the one's you want because of it.....don't! I've discovered when I made mine last month, it was a piece of cake! I think it's not caught on yet you can make them 180 days out again. In fact I was able to make one a day or two later for Cindy's Royal Table, and a I think it was a week after I made one for Le Cellier. These are all suppose to be impossible to get even in the same day your 180 days open.

Update on ADR's for the hardest places to book in May: They're all still available at the times people want them the most. So no worries. :woohoo:If I can still get them for May, I'm thinking you can get them for June.

YOu may call it an amorphous mass, but I think you're a fair bit ahead of the rest of us were this far out. I wouldn't worry too much about ADRs- you;ll get some good stuff! I wouldn't even worry about Hoop!

So what if Judy doesn't get her last recruit?? Is this going to be a problem??

Those excl. events sound fun! Enjoy those!

I'm just thinking out loud so forgive me if I've totally missed your point here ;)...but can you just hang on to the PChef tickets until your next trip to use or upgrade? I think they only expire after you have used them once, so if you don't use them at all you won't have to add the non expiring option. :yay:

I think you're still way ahead of the game planning wise. In your head at least, you've got a loose idea of what you'd like to do and what you'll be up against.

the variables

1) snow days
2) meals with PChefs peeps.
3) ADRs

As far as being into your 180 day period already w/o all your ADRs, if the economy was booming, then I'd be worried. However, things such as they are..I think you're good for another month or two before things start filling up.

Okay, that's good to hear. I think my kids are at an age that they'll love it too.

I can relate to the ADR stress. Granted I'm still 2 months out but then if our dates change...aack!

I think we'll be fine. I just feel behind where I was last time -- before my ADR window opened I had every restaurant and time planned, and was on the phone the minute the reservation office opened. I got everything I wanted, and never changed a thing (except cancelling Whispering Canyon during the trip).

CSR has rooms that sleep 5, don't they? That's always the issue for us. 'cept we are 6, which is worse. Granted any time I have tried to actually BOOK one, they were not available.

Maybe? But last year when we added POR, the CM said that the only Moderate that could sleep 5 was POR. And I've never known a CM to give out bad information. ;) Maybe we'll be able to keep 5 in a room...that'd be good. :crowded: but good.

:confused3Who cares if it turns into a novel! That's the beauty of it being your PTR! You can say as little or as much as you want. Sounds like you like to "talk" out your ideas/thoughts, I'm the same way. So talk away! :chat:

Not usually. I'd probably rather work it all out and then just lay it out there, here it is. But "worked-out" is not the state of things right now!

Thanks. Now Hoop I'll be able to book a little more than 180 days out. Once I hit 180 days from the Kidani reservation I can bok 180 +7 :thumbsup2. But right now I'm day to day.

So what if Judy doesn't get her last recruit?? Is this going to be a problem??

Those excl. events sound fun! Enjoy those!

Yeah, that would be a problem....no PChef portion of the trip. We'd rebook our Kidani stay to be Standard View rather than Savannah View (I forgot to mention that in my intro. :woohoo:) and have to borrow points from the next year's alottment.

But, no need, it's a done deal now. The recruit has reached the requirements, but the system won't show it as a recruit until after the month closes.

I think it's really smart to upgrade those PChef tickets. :thumbsup2 It's always nice to have tickets for the next trip just waiting to go.

I think you're right, we're in decent shape planning-wise.

And, I talked to Judy about some of these issues (what a great idea  huh?) and she is in total agreement with me:

- stay far away from MK on PChef EMH day
- book the ADRs we want now and worry about other peeps' plans later

Sounds like I got the green light to start planning, right?

I think you'll be fine on the ADR's now that it's at 180 days and your plan of EMH PC avoidance seems sound! That is great info on the park tickets, I hope that works out so you can just save them. I am pretty sure that is right, but definitely double check!

CSR actually has 3 different suite options that sleep 6, but I think getting 2 rooms may actually be cheaper!

Hoop De Doo scares you? Why? Most people report that it's a good time, and I was looking for a good "last night" event.

I think it's all about the way the bears look. Seems creepy. Plus I'm not really into that "yee-haw, hoedown!" stuff. But hey, if you like it than by all means, enjoy!

Yes, we really liked Biergarten. It's the one place my son James wanted to back to, and my wife said it was her favorite meal, after Boma.

I don't think there is a drooling smiley, but there should be, I'd get a lot of use out of it.

We had an older couple join our table after we got started. It wasn't an issue at all. We had a nice chat with them. :chat: They were from Texas, but the wife was originally from Germany so she spoke to the waiter in German. The husband took this picture for us:

You are all invited over to our house on New Year's day for sauerkraut, kielbasa, pork, and mashed potatoes. My mom gives us her homemade kraut, which we'll pick up over Christmas, and then Judy will slow cook everything on New Year's day. It is sooo darned good that every year we say, "why do we only do this one day a year?!" So we usually do it again a couple of weeks later, and then never eat it again until the next New Year's.

jenbear, sorry I don't get the Zappa reference. :sad2: Is that Zappa, as in Frank, as in Mothers of Invention?

I was a little worried about sitting with strangers at Biergarten, but we've been 3 times and met some wonderful people.

Most people are very friendly and happy to talk about what they've seen and done. It's definitely easy to come up with things to talk about..."So, what parks have you been to?" "What's your favorite ride?" "Any restaurants to recommend?" "Are you going to eat that?"

Check-out

There's not too much flesh on the bones for the last few days, but I may not plan a whole lot for those days -- I like to leave them open so the kids or Judy can express if there's something they really want to do.

One thing I'm not sure about is that with this plan the first time we'll enter the Magic Kingdom will be during the evening, which seems kind of weird for the first time seeing the castle during the trip. Maybe I'll replace our first day's trip to Downtown Disney with going to MK.

Also, we're going, going, going for several days straight. Maybe on Wednesday, when we change resorts, we should make it a non-park day. Check-out late, move over to Kidani and just go to the pool. The only problem with that is it does take a while for your luggage to arrive and you might as well be at a park. Hmmmm.

Now...switching gears. You guys have sat through all of that park planning stuff very patiently. I's all a lot of words....blah, blah, blah. But I know that what you really want, are pictures. So, how about if I keep you entertained for a little while with a couple of pictures of us picking out our Christmas tree last weekend? Oh, I should mention, this is the first time in probably almost fifteen years that we've not used an artificial tree. Lauren's the only one who had ever gone with us to pick out a tree before, and she didn't remember it.

Here are the kids strolling around the tree farm, hunting for the perfect tree. It was a cold day.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/IMG_1956.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/IMG_1957.jpg

After a little while we found said tree, and the family posed in front of it.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/IMG_1958.jpg

After I took the one above, each of the kids wanted a turn taking the picture. I won't bore you with those, they're basically the same shot, with interchanging people....except for the one James took. When he held that camera in his hands, with gloves on, all you could see was the lens sticking through. I don't even know how he managed to trip the shutter button. We all cracked up!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/IMG_1961.jpg

After he took it, he was like, "What? What?"

Then another gentleman tree-hunter apparently noticed us and offered to take our picture for us. That was very kind of him, and he didn't even know he would be mentioned in a Pre-Trip Report which would be read by thousands and thousands of people.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/IMG_1963.jpg

Marlene and James wanted to take a shot at sawing, but Lauren didn't want to get her jacket dirty. Don't you love their cute faces?

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/IMG_1966.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/IMG_1969.jpg

After they were done messing around I finished it off and loaded our trophy into my truck.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/IMG_1976.jpg

I guess I should say I loaded it into the tree-farm-provided wagon, and then loaded it into my truck, of which I don't have a picture...of.

Then, my job is to get it into the base and into the house. After that, the kids and Judy do the decorating. That's not my thing. Here's the finished product.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/IMG_2002.jpg

Nobody better say "Timber!"

I love when plans start to come together! And these plans look really, really good!

In fact, your day 1 looks, almost to the smallest dot on an i , identical to ours. There, you won't even have to read my PTR to know that. I do have one going, by the way. (link below with steamboat) My tradition is going to DTD first thing, I'd keep it. But if you all feel like seeing the castle right off is important, then you can always switch it out. Traditions are a good thing!

I'm pretty excited to see Yeehaw Bob too, but since we're arriving on a sunday, we'll have to wait. Did you know he has his own website?? It's always interesting.

I'll have to get over to your PTR...sorry I haven't been on it yet.

We started last year's trip with a visit to DTD and it worked really well. It's not as important this time as we'll already have our annual passes in hand. That one may be a last-minute call.

Yes, I'm psyched to catch Yeehaw Bob early on. I've been on his website, but not lately.

You definitely have more than half the trip planned out. Awesome! I'm going again in April and I'm no where near done planning as much as you have! Guess I should get on that huh?

Oh my gosh. I LOVE the pictures of you and your family getting your tree!!!! I'm actually going with my mom and step-dad tomorrow. Perhaps I'll post some of my adventures too :scratchin Only difference is that we might have a little bit more snow than you.....

I know how you said you won't have much downtime for the first couple days. But what about Typhoon Lagoon day? Usually you can finish up with that place near lunchtime. You could then take a break back at the resort for a couple hours before switching over to AKL? Or the day you check in at AKL, just take it easy, skip MK (or go later on in the day) and enjoy the fact that you've returned "home" :goodvibes

We'll be waiting!! We have a ton of fun, and with Cherie et al. around there are plenty of laughs and fart talk.

DTD somehow just gets me in the mood for all things Disney. and it gets the shopping out of the way, so I can concentrate of better (just my opinion) things in the parks.

Glennbo~

The plans sound solid. I like the idea of doing the first evening or day at DTD, this is also my plan for our first day there. I told my DH that I wanted to get to WDW as early as we can without leaving before the crack of dawn, this way we could have the choice of what we wanted to do the first day.
We can stay at the resort and swim, sleep or rest, and there are some of us that would like to tour the different resorts and see things we haven't seen before. That evening we have it planned to go to DTD early to eat and shop and pittle fart around then head back to the room for an early turn in.
I'm all for doing things the easy way this time, the first time we went we got in pretty late (plane arrived into airport at around 10:40 p.m.) and then we were up and at'em right off the bat the next morning. It didn't make for a very relaxing start. :sad2:

your plans look really good,

do you have a list of when the EMH for the pchef group will be so i can add that to my calander and what parks to avoid on thos days

:)

There'll be EMH at MK on Monday, June 14 from 8-9 am (ie. before park opening). Then there will be an exclusive event at AK on Tuesday, June 15 after the park closes (so that wouldn't affect you). That's it.

You definitely have more than half the trip planned out. Awesome! I'm going again in April and I'm no where near done planning as much as you have! Guess I should get on that huh?

It's coming along and I'm feeling better about it.

Oh my gosh. I LOVE the pictures of you and your family getting your tree!!!! I'm actually going with my mom and step-dad tomorrow. Perhaps I'll post some of my adventures too :scratchin Only difference is that we might have a little bit more snow than you.....

Thank you....we had fun. Where will you post yours, the TR or PTR?

Our snow is coming, we're supposed to get walloped overnight. I was at the grocery store this afternoon and it was a madhouse -- everybody has to get their milk and bread. I couldn't figure out what was going on.

Yeah, maybe that would fit better on the day we change resorts, I'll have to think about that.

I'm sure it is a fun place...I'll get there when I can.

Yes, I like DTD for exactly the same reason -- to get the shopping done so we're not thinking about that in the parks (well, one reason anyway, but it is definitely one I've thought of).

I agree....I love getting in early enough to do a little relaxing before I turn into a park commando.

I like the way the trip is shaping up. I see there's a tentative date night, way to go Romeo!

We hit the 180-day mark from our Kidani reservation, so since I have an actual reservation in-hand for that I was able to make the rest of our ADRs online.

I got:

Boma for Thursday night. :thumbsup2
The Wave (for 2 - I wish there was a smiley with eyebrows going up and down) for Friday night. :thumbsup2
and Hoop de Doo for Saturday night. :thumbsup2

I forgot that I'd have to let them bill my credit card now for HDDR. My card's already getting hot from all the friction of being swiped while Christmas shopping. Maybe I'll feel better about it in June when the bill has already been paid.

I SO hear you there. I was this close to the deposit on our April DLR trip and decided it would really be prudent to just put it on the 7 day hold and wait a week to actually put the deposit down in case the Disney Visa bursts into flames in the next 7 days....

Your "hubba hubba" cracked me up. I convert/export to pdf and then convert/eport the pdf to a jpeg I'm sure there is an easier way but I don't know what it is. Alternatively you could take a screen shot of it, copy it into whatever photo editing software you have, crop out the screen and then save as.

Neither being the most efficient of options but they do work.

Thank you! Yes, we had a good time. But it was particularly funny to just see a lens poking through James' gloves. I really don't know how he was able to take the picture.

The tree has a little extra insurance of a piece of string attached running from the tree to an eye screw in the baseboard. It's not enough to actually hold it up, but it might keep it from starting to lean. I'm glad we have that extra insurance with all of the tree-disaster stories I'm hearing this year.

Sorry to pipe in on this conversation but yes, that would be the easiest way to do it. I'm assuming you're using Excel for your spreadsheet so you'll just export as PDF. Open the PDF in Adobe or Foxit Reader (whichever program you might be using to view PDF's) Take a screen shot (Print Screen on keyboard) Open Paint then go Edit>Paste and crop it to your liking. Then save it as a jpeg! You could also use a safe, free online software which will do the whole conversion process for you. Go to www.zamzar.com (http://www.zamzar.com/), choose the PDF you want to convert (it has to be less than 100MB), select "Convert to: JPG", enter your e-mail address (don't worry they don't spam you, I have used this site on multiple occasions) and voila! It's now a JPEG! Hope this helps.....

In the free online version of photoshop you can upload the pdf and do a save as there as well. I confess I do it all in with the full version of acrobat )not reader but acrobat) so it's a quick 2 step process (I just open the pdf and then choose export as) without any photo editing so it really just depends on what software you've got already to figure out the quickest way to do it.

As an fyi some of these will also give you the option to export or save as a gif, tiff or png if preferred. I know acrobat will take a multi page pdf and export it as single page jpegs so just be prepared for multiple files when you do it.

TIMBER stories may be found on my PTR, Winkers PTR (or TR but I think it's on her PTR) and yikes, there is at least one more I just read recently.

This is our first live tree in this house (been here 10 years - I think I mentioned it had been a long time since we've had a real tree) so we had to put a screw eye in this year. The original is probably still in our first house.

Having Creative Suite envy again. :sad2: That would have been MUCH easier. For my TR, I tried several things, then finally took a screen shot of the spreadsheet (ALT + Print Screen), pasted it into MS Paint, used the sizing squares to crop it to just the section that I wanted, then saved it.

Well, there are a lot of people who think the food is too....something (exotic, spicy, adventurous -- yes, that's it). I disagree, but to each their own, right? Plus, there are all kinds of standard fare items for kids, or the less adventurous, so you don't have to worry about going hungry. And being a buffet, it's a great opportunity to try some new things without fear of selecting a whole entree that you find you don't like.

Oh, Boma was the hardest restaurant for me to book at the 180 day mark (late in the day though, shamefully). I was trying for a 7:30 pm reservation and the closest times were 7:05 or 8:10. So, it's popular.

Yeah...it pretty much rocks and I know I only get maybe 10% of it's capabilities. I am not worthy!

I would think you could PDF your spreadsheet and then edit it in the free photoshop version, may or may not be easier but at least you don't have the full screen shot to crop out and the resolution is better than the screen grab.

Glad to see Boma is way high up on some lists. I don't think I've ever seen a bad rev. on that one either. Now, for those of you going with the Wave- can any of you compare it to Cal. Grill?? Differences? Atmosphere? Etc...

Boma is the bomb. Can't compare the other 2 though they are on my wish list for August.

I've never eaten at Cali Grill, but I'd be interested to see any responses to your question.

But will you make us wait for you to get to that point in your TR? I mean, it could be a while before you get past the stories of peeps and drunks and people sleeping on benches and bathroom reviews and.....

You know, that's a really good point! The rest of us could have gone and eaten at the Wave before we read about it on Jordan's TR....

That is really good to know about one of your choices being difficult. I fear I have completely overwhelmed my MIL with choices and so I really do need to have this all locked down on my end on ADR day!

Does anyone know, if you can't access your reservation through the online system (which seems to happen if you've made changes to it, or maybe if it is through a TA) does that pose an issue with the online dining reservations? I haven't tested it out yet.
I found this funniest EVER cheezeburgers cat one, that has this cat slamming his paw down on the keyboard with a scream on his face. The caption says "Load you Piece of C#$&. LOAD!!!!" I so felt like that last night!!!

Unfortunately, even with Cherie's help I could get it to paste into my thread. I'm needing some tech help- I think I'll PM Cynthia!

Come to think of it, I was posting something on your thread when the boards went down last night. I don't even remember what I was going to say. So, yeah, I know what you (and that cat) mean.

We'll have to gang up on him to give us an "express" review on that one. Ya hear that Jordan?

You might be all right if you call early....I waited until late in the day. Ooops. Our time was still all right, I was just a little surprised that the available times were about a half hour on each side of what I requested.

I don't know the answer to this...you might be better off calling than using the online system.

Thank you! Yes, we've had a wonderful few days visiting family...and a couple more before we head back home. I'm able to check in on the DIS once or twice a day. I can view it on my phone, but haven't figured out how to get to my "User CP" to view subscribed threads, so the phone visits aren't usually very productive.

We're back home! Or, at least in the door...car-top carrier put away, groceries in the fridge, but duffel bags are scattered here and there.

that made me laugh because my mom thinks of it as a personal afront if you don't eat a huge meal everytime you're here. My Grandmas was even worse she included 4 course breakfasts into the mix.

Funny you should say that. I caught a little grief my first Thanksgiving married to my wife, when we ate at my in-laws for the 2nd T'giving meal of the day (first at my parents' house). I didn't eat much, being so full, and my mother-in-law wasn't too keen on it. Since then I've either learned to pace myself, or stretched my stomach some...probably a little of both.

4 course breakfast!

my kids are lucky to get ONE out of me!

It is the best thing to win a trip to WDW!!! We won one about four years ago with my DH's former work, which I will be proud to state the name of (because they are now closed- perhaps they shouldn't have been giving away trips): Linens N Things! Had I done a PTR at the time it would have been "The Cheapest Free Trip Ever" They paid for everything, again, but didn't manage to keep my DH in a job, now did they? I knew it had to be Goofy's Candy Company, so thought that was the answer, but it didn't fit with canines and hockey sticks.

Homer was cracking me up- we watched the one where they went to Japan. Totally reminded me of the Mitsukoshi Store. "Hey look! The Hello Kitty Factory!"

Also saw the one where Marge cut off his thumb. SO funny!!

But my fave line ever- he gets fat so he can go on disability. Works from home (as nuclear safety operator) Computer asks if he should "vent the gas". Homer- "OK, vent the stupid gas". OMGosh, still laughing!

Okay spreadsheet lovers! I will give you a glimpse of my Master Plan. (Why does that sound funny to me? Like something Dr. Evil would say. :stir: muhaaha!) Here’s the extent I do my planning. For actual park touring, as in what rides to hit when, I usually make a plan the morning of….while we’re on our way to the park. Scary, I know.

Oh, special thanks to Cynthia, Jenbear, and Great Biscuit for offering advice on how to get my spreadsheets into a form I could post here. Here’s how I ended up doing it. I printed from Excel as a pdf file using CutePDF. Then, opened them in Adobe Acrobat (professional version) and saved them to a JPEG file (separate files for each page). I don’t think you can save as a JPEG file with Adobe Reader. Then I uploaded the JPEG files to Photobucket and, voila.

The Master Plan (so far):

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/2010_Plan_12_30_09.jpg

I print this (and the following few pages) reeeaaaaalllly small, and carry them around in my wallet. My family laughs at my microfiche Master Plan and other pages. Can you believe that?! A lot of you swear by binders, but I just don’t want to carry that around. I have enough park gear already. My system worked for me last year, at least until I took a little trip down the Kali River Rapids. :rolleyes1

On the Master Plan I also include my ADR numbers, but I’ve hidden that row since I’m posting it on the internet….wouldn’t want someone stealing my reservations! I also include, but have hidden, TGM’s park recommendations since I have promised not to divulge that info. (it’s a pay site). And you can’t tell by the parks I’m going to -- several of my park choices are not TGM’s recommended parks. Where I show 2 or 3 potential parks and the one I've chosen, those were just my guesses before TGM published their recommendations. I may rethink my plan, but chances are it’ll stay like I have it here.

The rest of the pages below are from last year, so I’ll have to validate the info. for this year as the time draws nearer.

Next up: Tables in Wonderland participating restaurants, in case we’re stopping for a meal at a time I don’t already have an ADR, or we just need a :drinking1

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/Plan_2010_part2_pg1.jpg

Discounts!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/Plan_2010_part2_pg2.jpg

Fastpass rides. I think some of these were incorrect even last year.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/Plan_2010_part2_pg3.jpg

The next two are Epcot World Showcase entertainment times. The file got saved with the small print settings, so I know it’s hard to read. If you really want to read it, let me know and I’ll repost them larger. The second page prints way to the right so that I can copy them, 2 pages to 1 page double sided, and they’ll end up back-to-back. :thumbsup2

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/Plan_2010_part2_pg4.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/Plan_2010_part2_pg5.jpg

These last two happen to be tabs in the same spreadsheet as the “Master Plan”, but aren’t something I need for the parks…they’re our Garden Grocer order from last year. I know anyone out there thinking about ordering groceries is curious about what other people order, so I’ll post it. This was just about the right amount of food for us last year, where there were 5 of us in a suite for 7 days, but with several meals eaten in restaurants. Caution: you can go broke on apples. :scared1: And, is that a Pop Tart order I see? :cloud9:

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm183/glennbo123/PTR2010/Plan_2010_part2_pg7.jpg

Hey Glennbo!

Just found your ptr. I am so with you on the mini spreadsheet! I do the same thing. I've even laminated them. Yep, I'm a planning dork. I like to do a binder that stays in the room, AND a mini spreadsheet to take with. Also, I bring a tiny copy of every park CS restaurant menu, so when we're in the park and its time for lunch I can ask the others where they want to eat, and give the illusion (and it is just an illusion;)) of NOT being a control freak with everything all decided. Okay, they still think I'm a freak, but they're greatful for it!:thumbsup2

Oooo, I like the lamination idea. :worship: on the menu copies! Wow, that's more effort than I plan to expend. A day is soon coming (already here?) when we'll have all of this info. on our little hand-held gadgets and phones, and we'll say "remember all the work we did to be able to bring this info. into the parks"?

Same thing happens to me with my itinerary. Yes, I want to wear my itinerary on a shirt. Then I'll never forget where I need to be and neither will anyone else in the park! :rotfl2:

Oh that'd be good! :rotfl2:

Hey Jordan, that might be good for Peepfest -- everybody gets a t-shirt with the group itinerary printed on it.

As far as I can tell by comparing your TIW list to the one I got when I bought my TIW in November, it's pretty much the same. If in doubt, just ask if they accept it! Worst thing they can say is no.

Yeah, that's what I did last year. I remember going into Cooke's of Dublin and asking them if they took TIW, or gave an AP discount, or a DVC discount....how 'bout AAA??!!! They gave me some kind of discount.

You're really ahead of yourself with having your full trip all planned out. I'm going in April and only just starting my itinerary!!! Teach me oh wise one :worship: :rotfl2:

I'm a piker compared to a lot of obsessive-compulsive planners on these boards!

:worship::worship::worship:

Oh, there goes one now. (See comment above.)

thank heavens we can't smell these threads!! Laughing about poop and farts is one thing but smelling it...:scared:

Yeah, somebody would probably PM you a "dutch oven", if you know what I mean.

$1 for an apple??!!?? that's crazy...I pay that for a pound of apples, sometimes even less.

Tell me about it. I'm not a huge fan of apples -- I can take 'em or leave 'em -- so I had a hard time paying those prices, but others in the family eat them pretty regularly. And we figured the Disney prices were probably comparable, if we bought them in the resort store.

Great spreadsheets, reminds me I need to dust mine off. I also carry a copy. I like the binder idea but think it is to bulky.
Did you use all the GG stuff-about how many meals did it cover

I think it was about 3 dinners, (although one of those was just the kids, Judy and I went on a date night) 6 or 7 breakfasts (we never had a restaurant breakfast) ranging from Pop Tarts to cereal to toast to bacon and eggs, and about 2 days where we packed lunches to take into the parks. Then we had 1 last night dinner where we cleaned-up leftovers.

Hey, I read some more of your life history (in that "War and Peace" knock-off you call "Biscuit's Grand Adventure") and read that your Plan philosophy is about the same as mine: don't plan too much of the actual park touring, kinda high-level must-do's, and leave some open days. I saw something recently that the Simpsons had an anniversary, but I don't remember which number. 20 years sounds about right. I had a friend way back then who was trying to record every episode. I wonder if he's kept up that hobby?! I'll bet he didn't think he'd be at it so long! That's kind of what I thought too -- the rest wasn't too outlandish, but the fruit!

I can't do a whole "real size" binder, mine's a 4x6 photo book that I convert to a binder thingy.

Oh, I didn't realize it was 4x6. That's not too bad. Still too big for my pocket though and I'll never carry a man-purse, so it's microfiche printing for me!

Already here. I put it all in outlook too. I just like the binder thingy, sometimes printed is easier to read and flip though....especially for the snack list!

Yeah I know. I don't usually stay on the leading edge of technology....it's cheaper that way.

IT WAS A POP TART ORDER!!!!!

And brown sugar and Cinnamon to boot!

Well.......yeah (as in, of course!).

OK, here's the deal.... I need, NOT, I must have that show times/entertainment schedule!! Same format!! Enable me; how can I get it!??

PM me if need be.

I sent you a PM.

For others, I got the info. from this most informative website: http://pages.prodigy.net/stevesoares/

I looked at it this morning and a lot of the days that performers are there are different from what I posted from last year (not that you could read it!). I've updatd my spreadsheet and will re-post it, in larger print, when I get a chance.

Thanks Dawn. I know you're a "planner", and have helped other people with their trips. I haven't been able to pull that off yet.

my obsession with helping other people with their trips has led to actually becoming part-time travel agent. as my friend mary-margaret said, it's like being an alcholic bartender! :rotfl:

Okay, here are updated Epcot Entertainment pages, in a new, improved, larger size!

The second page still has some old data, I recommend checking the website I posted earlier as you get closer to your trip.

I've been on Steve's site a zillion times (my OCD monster trying to memorize all those times!) but the site is pretty cumbersome broken down into diff. parks and resorts, etc....

Was this a separage page?? Did you cut and paste??

Oooo, I like the lamination idea. :worship: on the menu copies! Wow, that's more effort than I plan to expend. A day is soon coming (already here?) when we'll have all of this info. on our little hand-held gadgets and phones, and we'll say "remember all the work we did to be able to bring this info. into the parks"?

I think those days ARE already here - we're just behind the times technology wise! But, if I got an iphone and all those cool Disney apps, then I wouldn't need a spreadsheet and note cards, and how would I fill the next 9 months until my trip? ;)

I hadn’t thought too much about airfare before yesterday. Over the holiday break I checked Southwest and everything out of Philly was $150 outbound and return. It didn’t seem like they were ready to start dealing yet. But yesterday afternoon Judy called me at work to say she’s seeing e-mails from her network of PChef friends and they’re getting dings and tweets (and all kinds of other technologies that only a few years ago were mere noises) and snagging great deals. So we took a look at some other airlines, but I know what I’m getting with Southwest, so kind of wanted to stick with them, but they were all still at $150. But then we checked into flying out of Baltimore, which is a little bit further drive for us but still do-able. I pulled up their fares and it was like, “now we’re talkin’”. I was seeing some $107’s, $120’s, and a little gem of a return at $67 (but with one-stop, although no plane change).

Now, I had a few parameters regarding acceptable times. Namely, I’d like to arrive in Orlando around lunchtime or earlier so we can get something in, even if it’s just the hotel pool or some time at DTD. And similarly for our flight out at the end of the trip, I’d like to try leaving later in the day so that we could get something in before we left. Last summer we had an early flight out, so we just got up, caught ME, and went to the airport.

So, within those parameters we had some choices:

Flights out
(all direct flights)
1) A superearly (like leave home at 4am) flight out of BWI, arriving at mid-morning at MCO for $107.
B) A still-pretty-early (leave home at 5:30am) flight out of BWI, arriving lunchtime for $120.
3) A slightly-better (leave home at 6am) flight out of PHL, arriving lunchtime for $150.

Flights back
(all my choices depart MCO around 5ish)
A) Return to BWI, direct-flight, arrive home probably 9pm, for $147
2) Return to BWI, one-stop, no plane change, arrive home probably 11pm, for $67
C) Return to PHL, direct-flight, arrive home probably 9:30pm, for $150

Hmmmm. :scratchin

I came home from work and asked the kids what they thought about getting up at 3 in the morning to catch a flight to Disney. James was all for it, but the girls, not so much. And I’d do it -- I can never sleep with a Disney trip looming, but I’m planning on catching YeeHaa Bob our first night and I’d hate to fall asleep during the liveliest one-man-show in Disney.

So I stared at them some more last night, and

Pulled the trigger.

I booked choice “B” for the flight out and choice “2” for the return.

Last year I lost $100 or more when I delayed booking the tickets so that I could look up our Rapid Rewards numbers, and the prices went up overnight. And they never went back down. This is Orlando we’re talking about, right after school lets out. I was afraid that $67 fare would get away, and the total for the five of us is a few hundred dollars cheaper than what we paid last year, so I figured I’d better jump on it.

There you have it, airfare DONE! I looked and booked.

Update to my update: Now this morning I went on to peek at the fares again and they’ve reduced my outbound flight to $107. :headache: Oh well, maybe we’ll rebook and get a refund voucher. Judy could put it towards her annual trek to the PChef Annual Conference at HQ in Chicago.

I have pictures of it in my PTR, it's pretty darn cute and fits easily in my park bag. It looks more like a wallet than a binder thingy. Last year I used a different one (but save 4x6 size) that had a lot more pages and I like this one better, it limits how much info I can put on it, which is a good thing but is vastly prettier and fun! The other one was a little bulky and there is such a thing as too much info to carry around!

I hadn’t thought too much about airfare before yesterday.

You can re-book and get the difference on a voucher which can be used towards another ticket up to a year. I went to do it this evening and the prices are back where they were last night! I'm wondering if I was seeing things this morning, but I know everything was at $107, not $120 this morning!

When I lived in Philly, we always checked ABE (Allentown) and Newark. AirTran out of Allentown usually has decent fares, but then you have the bag fee.

Yeah, it's a good idea to check around. We're down in the corner of PA near Delaware and Maryland. Allentown would be farther than I'd like to drive.

Oh yeah! It is on! I can handle it. We told James today that we booked the tickets and he was bummed that we didn't go with the superearly flight and that we're not getting in until lunchtime. He wanted to get a good amount of park-time in. But I know if we had done that it would have consequences by evening of that first day ---> :faint:

I still think you did great! Those are the flights I'd have chosen.

I know someone has had luck with SW before on this, worth a phone call!

Thanks. I think we may have done it last year also (rebooking and getting a credit voucher towards a future flight). As I mentioned above, I went to do it tonight and the prices were back where they were last night. Wha-wha-what? :confused3

Okay I just took a peak at my dates again and there are flights for 313. Mine was 223 on Southwest. However, I have a connecting flight and get in REALLY late on Friday and leave at 2pm on Thursday the 18th. I could have all of Friday night to hang out at WDW and then on departure day I'd have basically a 1/2 day to go to the parks....Hmmmmmm........

Yep, getting things nailed down. Still not sure where we're staying that first night yet.

Our kids' last day of school is the day before we fly out...as long as we don't get any snow days. If we do, they'll extend school, and we'll have to do some quick talking as to why our kids won't be there for the last day or so. They never do anything the last days anyway. Last year they turned their books in several days before the last day and the last couple of days seemed like a big waste of time. Anyway, we're keeping our fingers crossed that everything works out okay.

. Dad is not coming because he says "it's gonna be a lot of unruly children there!" :lmao:
. I need to get everything done through a travel agent here in México. The "packages" include hotel, plane tickets, park tickets and airport-hotel-airport taxis.
. I will check if we can get the dinning plan... this trip I want to go to some TS restaurants (Mom won't approve fast food ;) )
. At least one whole day should be used to visit IOA to see the Harry Potter attraction (mom's a fan).
. If nephew is coming we are going in June, if not then I'll try for a less crowded time.

So far that's what I have. And as soon as I have some stuff straightened around here I'll be putting some money down on the trip, perhaps by this May or June.

We did that last year - rebooked when prices went down. Although, we went in May, and our trip this year is in September. So our voucher will expire by then. It was only for $60, so not a big deal. Yeah, sometimes its best just to book it and forget it!

Another thing I know for sure for this trip is that we are definitively not going commando... mom will insist in wearing underwear!

Sorry I wanted to join in the joke trend :rotfl:

Pick your seat! One of the sayings of my wife's family (I can't believe I hadn't heard it, 'cause I thought I knew all of the off-color stuff) was if they saw you scratching your butt or un-wedgie-ing yourself, they'd say "are you going to the movies?" And you'd go, "Huh?" And then they'd say, "I thought you were going to the movies because you're picking your seat!"

.

:lmao::lmao: It's been a long time since I've heard that! My dad's family always said it.
