We hope to be renting points soon from a DVC member. It is our first time renting. I understand the process, however I have one question. If the DVC member makes a reservation in my name what prevents that same member from cancelling my reservation after receiving my payment?

We're hoping to stay at OKW, did anyone find the transportation from there to the theme parks unbearable?

Thanks for helping us out.

The answer is nothing but trust. The member will put the reservation in your name and will send you the confirmation. However, the member always has the ability to cancel at anytime without your permission and even without your knowledge. That is simply how the reservation system works for DVC. Nevertheless, I have not heard anyone ever having that issue arise with any member who has reserved through use of these boards.

Kick it up a notch!

I have rented some of my points through this board and from reading all of the posts it seems that most of the DVC owners rent for a couple of reasons, eithe rthey will not use all of their points in time and don't want to loose them, or they may plan other vacations and just don't want to use their points. I'm sure that there are other situations too, but the bottom line is that DVC is expensive and I think that the people who own DVC are a little different than your average WDW visitor (notice how I did not use the word better, for fear of being thought of as a snob) The feeling I get from reading these posts on the DVC related boards is one of community and I really do not see the owners out there trying to screw someone. There may always be a rotten apple in the bunch though, and if you are concerned about renting points you should use an escrow service. I resaerched one once in case someone was interested (I can't remember the name of it now) but if someone wanted to use one I wouldn't have minded as long as they paid the fee (I don't think it was that much) and then both parties would be protected and feel more comfortable about the transaction.

You should get the details in writing though, and both of you should be agreeable to them.

If you do rent points, enjoy your stay!!!

I had exactly the same fears. Anyone you rent from should be able to provide you with references. Also, when renting it's nice to have a written confirmation/contract/agreement between the two of you before any money changes hands. You can also call as often as you want to confirm your reservations directly.

The other poster is right, DVC owners are not out to screw people over, they are just trying to rent out the points they can't use or the reservations they can no longer use, so they don't lose that years points and therefore that years investment in DVC. Plus it's really a great deal and a favor to us non-owners that they are willing to do this since it saves us tons of $$!

Thanks to all you renters!!
