Okay I have one more question.
Is the Nikon 18-105 mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR ED nikkor lens compatible with the Nikon D40? This looks like a pretty good walk around lens but I want to make sure it is compatible and will autofocus on a D40. I don't want a lens that I need to manual focus.

Yes, it is. Nikon lenses with "AF-S" in the name will autofocus on the D40. The "S" in "AF-S" stands for Silent Wave (http://www.nikonusa.com/Learn-And-Explore/Nikon-Camera-Technology/ftlzi4s1/1/Silent-Wave-Motor.html), which is their term for having a focus motor in the lens.
