You can set the maximum volume on in so set it like halve way so they can't turn it up to loud and check it every now and then to make sure they didn't change it.
The earbuds (the ones that go in your ears) might not fit so i suggest headphones. (the ones that go over your ears)

THey also make great silicone cases to protect the Ipod:thumbsup2
If you got an Ipod classic they make these great cases called tadpoles for kids. Wish they'd make then for nanos!

If you go to Target they have earbuds specifically designed for kids ears. They are size appropriate and limit volume. Should be great for your little one.

Sony makes a set of headphones for kids that we like. I've gotten them at Kmart and Toys R Us. They are pink or black. The part around your ear is a little bigger than normal. There is only one wire, not two and that is really a nice feature and they are supposed to be a lower volumn too.

I'd would recommend getting head phones over ear buds...ear buds are more likely to cause hearing damage. I would also recommend setting a max volume.
