I'd love to hear from someone who has run the Disneyland Resort 1/2 marathon. I'd especially love to hear if there are any other people looking at running this 1/2 marathon next Labor Day weekend! And, even more, I'd love to hear from other people (like myself) who are considering running this 1/2 marathon who have never run one before and are doing this because a) they love Disney and b) it's an inspirational way to get into shape.

We just bought APs to DLR. This was largely endorsed by my DH because of my interest in building up to running a 1/2 marathon. Right now, I'm going to focus on running a simple 5K by Valentine's Day and keep working from there.

My first 1/2 marathon was this race back in 2006 and it's the only 1/2 marathon I've ran since then! I'm sure this is largely because it's Disney. For me, this race has it all for my family. I do the 1/2 marathon, my wife and son do the 5k, and my daughter runs the kids race. So it's a great family weekend for us. We make our weekend "magical" by staying onsite at the DLH for a couple of reasons:
1) We like the DLH
2) This is the closest hotel to the finish and start of the 1/2 marathon (this is a blessing as I'm too tired to walk or drive back any further than this hotel!)
I don't have any other 1/2 marathon to compare it to but I think this is a great race for your first 1/2 marathon. Am I running this event next year? You bet!

I'll be there, too. This was my 2nd half marathon (the first was WDW).

There are lots here who have done the DL 1/2 and will be doing it again.
I did it back in 2008 as it was the first year of the Coast to Coast medal.
I will be going in 2010 as it will be the 5 year anniversary of it. Flying in from South Florida. I mainly do it to see my West Coast Racing WISH buddies, see family that lives out there, the Coast to Coast medal and to do some Disney stuff. It is not my first, probably at that time will be my 13th Half.

My best friend and I are planning on walking it. We've been walking a few days a week and varying our distances, with the furthest distance being 7 miles so far. The only other event I've ever done is the 5K Race for the Cure, so I'm excited. I'm also doing this as a motivation to get in shape and an excuse to go to Disneyland!

I did this race back in 2006 and am aiming to do it again in 2011 (for the Coast 2 coast). It is a flat course that is well supported. In 2006 the race ran through the parks at the start then out through the city before finishing at downtown Disney. With the construction the course has changed since then and I am not sure if it will change again 2010.

The race has a very different feel than the WDW races. Because of all the property in Florida the races never leave WDW property. This is nice but it is a very different feeling then you get at most half/full marathons throughout the country. The DL half gives you the best of both worlds. You get the runs through the park, the big medal, and all the Disney extras but you also get to experience what a non-Disney run is like. You get to run past the businesses and parking lots and get to see the city. While you are off property it feels like a marathon in any other city with the residents coming out to support the runners. That is the one thing you miss at WDW that you ge tat DL, the feel of running through an actual city, not just on Disney property.

It is a great race and I think you will enjoy it.

I did this race this year (2009) and it was my first half marathon. I am planning on doing it again next year too. I walked the race last year and finished in 3 hours. I am hoping to add some running intervals in this year and improve the time.

It was so much fun! It is a great race for you to do as your first half marathon.

I did 2009 as my first long distance race for the very reasons you mention. I enjoy Disneyland and I wanted to make my first half-marathon memorable. I walked away anxious to do my next race. The support along the course was amazing and I felt it was a well organized event.

I am planning on running it again next year while my wife will be running in the 5k, my 4 year old ran in the kids' race this year and is excited to do it again next year and our newborn son will be crawling/walking in the diaper dash.

If you plan it right, it can be a great fun-filled weekend.

I too ran the 08 DLH for the coast to coast bling....

I will not run again. It was just not that fun to me. Maybe it was the weather (not hot but cloudy that morning) or maybe the course - kind of uninspiring run through warehouse parks. I really think that getting the miles in through July and August in hot and humid Houston just make ME not have the desire to run it again.

But do not let my negative opinion cause you to not run. I applaud you for 'getting into shape" to get through the event. Remember to train well for the event. Find a plan that you think will work for you and your lifestyle. See a doctor if you are coming off the couch and make sure to take at least one day off a week. You do not have to run the remaining 6 days, you can get by with 3 and run a sub2 hour event if you train to the proper intensities.

Good luck in your training!

I did it for the first time this September. (Not my first half) I enjoyed it. We got to run around the inside of Anaheim stadium as well as through DL. Got the Coast 2 Coast medal. Not sure if I'll be going back since I'm trying to get other states logged in for my halfs.

I think you will have fun with it and you've got great reasons to do so.

DL 2008 was my very first 1/2. I signed up for it to get the medal. Plus, I'm local (but stay onsite at the DLH for convenience!). Since then, I've run the WDW full, Princess 1/2, and this year's DL 1/2! I'm definitely doing it next year for the 5th anniversary! Not sure if I will be getting the 2010 C2C, though, as I'm still not sure if I will be making it to princess...

Anyway, it's a GREAT first race. The course is pretty flat, and it's DISNEY!

There's a 70-80% chance of me doing this in 2010. Planning on tying it in with a few days in Vegas. We have to work on hotels/flights/etc in a couple of months (when we hit the 7 month DVC window) & then I'll know for sure. It will be my 6th or 7th 1/2.

That's fantastic! I'll be there too although I think by then I will have something like 8 races under my belt. I have never done the DL and I look forward to it! For one thing I can't wait to have pictures with racing Mickey and racing Minnie and all the rest of the Disney gang! It's good you're starting now that means you have a lot of time to get half marathon fit. Are you using a training schedule? Lots of websites have them and they help a lot. You can totally do it and hooray to DH for supporting you! :dance3:

I am right there with you.

I went on a trip to the UK in October 2008 to see Manchester United play. When I got back, I took a look at my pictures and was horrified by what I saw. But pictures don't lie. My godchild was born in November, and in December I decided I needed to change, a couple things.

On December 12th, I went into my 24 hour fitness, which I had been a member of for 5 months, but never used, and asked about a trainer, because I decided I needed to learn how to work out. The guy was great and we set up a meeting for the next week. He wanted me to figure out what I wanted and to set some goals.

December 19th started my journey. I was right about 240 when I stepped on that evil scale (been a LONG time before that since I had actually been on one of those). We talked and set up 3 goals that I wanted to use as points in my journey.

1...Run the Cirque de Solea 5k in March in Vegas.
2...Run the Pat Tillman run in Tempe in April.
3...Run the Disneyland Half Marathon in September.

I started with learning how to work out and how to use a treadmill. Then it went into "jogging" outside. A minute at a time to start. Then longer distance and repitions.

Each of the goals I set gave me that 'something' to shoot for and work towards. My first 5K was about 35 minutes and I was pushed by a little 10 year old kid that was "racing" me the whole way. HAHAHA I beat him. But more importantly I finished. Pat's Run was everything I imagined it would be, and by then I had so much fun running that I added a 5K happening in Tempe the next morning, and had my fastest run to that date.

Finally. Running through the Vegas summer, getting up at 5am to run before the heat hit, getting to the parks late on my trips to Disneyland because I had to get my runs in...they were all just little things towards that final goal. I ran the katella, harbor, disneyway, loop around the parks on one of my runs and it was amazing to thing that I would be running 13 miles soon. When a year ago, I would have had issues running 1 block.

Use the run as your goal and inspiration. You will be with 10,000 other runners who love the mouse. I ran with a pace group (highly suggested) and one of the ladies was dressed as Tigger and she would "bounce" when people yelled out at her. The 13 miles went by so smoothly and quickly. Enjoy the training. Take the good runs with the bad runs and remember that you are changing your life for the better. Running through the parks with the characters cheering you on is one of those experience you will talk about forever.

I just ran my 2nd half marathon here in Vegas today and am running a full in January at Walt Disney World. I run 10-11 minute miles and will never be an elite runner. I go to kick boxing classes twice a week. I have lost over 50 pounds now. I have gotten my life back and know I have a chance to spend more time with the people I love. And I can not wait to get back there and do my 2nd Disneyland Half this coming year!

You can do it! :cheer2: Have FUN!!!!!!!!!!

As everyone else is headed to WDW for Marathon weekend, my thoughts are turning to the Disneyland Half. I haven't signed up yet, but I am sure I am going to. I did it last year (my first endurance race) and it was a blast. I am adding running now, having walked the 2009 race.

I know most of the other WISHers are headed East, but with the Coast to Coast medal on the line there have to be some planning on DL 1/2! It should be a good time for all.

(I am trying to convince myself to shell over the money - but I haven't done it yet. Even harder I am trying to convince DH :) )

Hi.

I just signed up for the Disneyland 1/2. I'm excited and scared. :rotfl: I am not a runner at all but I figure I have months to train. For the past 4 years I have wanted to do this but things always come up and I have decided that 2010 is my year and I am doing things for ME! :thumbsup2

I have never run anything in my life but I am determined to at least jog this 1/2 Marathon.

Does anyone have any sort of training guide that would be good to use because I don't even know where to begin besides just going out and running. I want to find some sort of program that will build up my distance gradually.

If all goes well with this 1/2 them my goal is to run the L.A. Marathon in 2011 in honor of turning 30. :scared1: Yikes! Lol.

I am not much of a runner myself. I have been a walker most of my life. I participated in the Couch to 5K program this fall, it was a good way to introduce running into my exercise routine. I don't know if you are beyond that already (it gets you to where you can run 30 minutes or 3 miles). If you are beyond that then you are already past me  So far I have just tried to add more time and miles as I go.

I am signed up for a half in February too. I think for that one I will do intervals of 5/2 R/W. Maybe I will be able to run the entire time for the DL 1/2!

I used the book "Half-Marathon: You Can Do It" by Jeff Galloway. I thought his philosophy on running would be the best way to get across the finish line and it did, much faster than I expected.

Not to ignore the rest of the thread (congratulations by the way) but I hope you saw a winner. The closest thing I've got was that I watched the Champions League final win over Chelsea from a restaurant on the Campo in Siena Italy.

Ok, sorry for the tangent. Back to your regularly scheduled program.

Moto. You can do it. You timing is perfect. Get either of the plan mentioned and lay it out on a calendar. Then add a week or 2 for extra time. I would put a 5K or 10K race at that point to goive you smaller targets to shoot for on the way. The actual half is a blast.

Fire...I have been over to OT 4 times and have seen some wins and some losses. It is the most amazing place in the universe to watch a game and the artist they call ROOOOOOONEY!!!! And the Reds keep marching on On ON!

Ok. Now that the first disney race of the year is out of the way. I just want to say... SEVEN and a HALF MONTHS LEFT UNTIL THE DL HALF. Wooo Hoooo. I am a little (OK a lot) sore today after the marathon yesterday. But I am sooo excited to focus on the amazing Disneyland half. WDW is nice but it doesn't have the magic of the original park. Happy running everyone and let us know the good, the bad, and the magic of your training.

Does anyone know how close to capacity the DL 1/2 is? I am planning on signing up, but hate to do it too early because plans change so easily.

Does Disney ever have promotion codes or anything to lower the price. It is a bit expensive for DH and I to do this race, but I had so much fun last year!

Last year I saw two different codes floating around. I think the one I used was DLR2009 and it was 15 or 20 bucks off. Haven't seen anything for this year.

When I get back to vegas I will take a look and see when registration filled for last year.

Not sure how this being the 5th anniversary will effect it.

I seem to recall it filling up in early summer last year. I signed up sometime in March last year and it closed well after that. So, you have some time. Once it starts to approach capacity, they do list the percentage of capacity, so once it hits 80 or 90%, make sure you get in ASAP if you haven't already.

A question for those who have done the DL 1/2 before, do you really have time to stop and take pictures with the characters? And what about the camera? Do you wear a fanny pack?

Although I've never done it, my DW has taken pictures with the characters. I don't think you should bring along a DSLR but a P&S will do just fine. She uses a Spibelt and it works just fine for her.

I didn't take my camera and I was sad about that. There were lots of things to take fun pictures of. I was far enough back in the pack that my time didn't matter, but it was my first half, and I took it very seriously.

I saw a lot of point and shoot cameras. I am going to figure out how to bring one this year. I don't know if I will stop and pose, since I am usually running by myself, so no partner to take my picture, but I would still like some photos of the race.

If you are talking about pics with the characters, then they will have a CM with them that will take the pics for you. Then out on the course are the ASI photographers.

I had my camera pouch attached to my hydration belt.

I think it depends on where you are in the race. I was in Corral A last year and I only had to wait for about 5-6 seconds while one person got there pic taken and then it was my turn. I think the stop lasted maybe 10-12 seconds at the most. I don't know what the wait time would be farther back in the pack.

As far as the medal is concerned, I spoke with the CM that will be designing the medal, at the RnR Las Vegas race expo, and she hinted that it could include coloring, kind of like the Goofy medal. She was still throwing around ideas on a different design and hadn't made a decision yet.

OP: I could have been the one to write your post. I am have been discussing this half marathon with my DH and your reasons are the same as mine. I have never run a half marathon and it has been quite a while since I have really ran at all. I am determined to meet this goal this year and what better place to do it than Disneyland.

Here is my question? Are all of the different races (half, 5K, kids' races) run at different times? Would I be able to see my kids to the kids' race if I was doing the half?

You're in the same boat as me. I do the 1/2, my DW and son do the 5k and my daughter does the kids race. So the 5k is first on Saturday with the kids races following after. On Sunday is the 1/2 so no races conflict.

This was my very first half marathon in 2006. I trained using Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham. The weather was perfect, the course had lots of cheering groups, and I met WISHers! When I finished, I wanted to sign up for a half a month! :lmao:

We just did it again last year. Not as many cheering groups this time, but still a nice flat course. Taking pictures with characters all depends on your pace. When you do a 15 minute mile, like me, you don't get to stop..you just take pictures of characters with other people!! ;) There were a couple of places on the course that became very crowded..one place we came to a complete stop! Unless you are a really speedy person and in the first two corrals, I wouldn't plan on a PR on any Disney course. Well, unless it's your first event..then, of course, you'll PR!! Just enjoy doing an event at Disney!

My husband's cousins got excited about this race last year and are looking into doing it. If so, we'll be back out there!

Keep focused, everyone! :cheer2:

I think I'm going to go this year. Dangle a special medal in front of me and my eyes light up. Same thing with the Goofy for 2010. It's all about the medal, isn't it? ;)

It's always about the medal. I saw a great sign yesterday during the Houston marathon course that said "Beer Goes Better With Bling". Ain't that the truth!

The Disney folks were at the Houston marathon expo and promised a very cool and unique medal for the 5th anniversary of the DL half this summer. I think it's time to go and get that Coast to Coast medal. :)

Can someone tell me where I can get the DL 1/2 2010 thingy for my signature? Thanks!!

We are looking at booking a package with a travel company that is contracted with DL for event packages. The prices seem really reasonable. Just waiting on my FIL to decide if he is going or not.

ETA: Does my qualifying time have to be my WDW race? I hope not, since it was terrible!! Thanks!!

Just pulled this off their site. It does not have to be from WDW.

Acceptable forms of proof of time are either a photocopy of finisher's certificate or a print out of race results. All forms of proof of time must be from a race 10K or longer, after July 1, 2007. If you do not provide of time you will be placed in the last start corral.

If you want this as your Signature just add the img brackets.

It hasn't been announced yet, but last year, the start was on Disneyland Drive, between the M&F garage and the DL hotel. The finish was right near the DL Hotel.

Any hotels close to the parking structure would work. Many of them offered shuttles to the start line, if I recall correctly. I drove from home the morning of the race and arrived around 5 AM. The M&F garage was already open and I was far from the first in. I parked in Daisy, so clearly a whole bunch of folks arrived before I did. Not sure when the structure opened, but it wasn't an issue.

Oh, shuttles are good! I want to make my room reservation soon.

Last year they were offering free ART shuttles (Anaheim Resort Transit I think it stands for) on Saturday and Sunday. They did not offer this for the hotels on Harbor across from the entrance to the parks.

I walked from my hotel at Harbor and Katella the morning of the run and there were a ton of people doing the same. It was nice to get the legs moving. Felt like it was a shorter walk than the one from the WDW holding area to the race corrals.

Hi there,

I've been a lurker for a while. Having just recently run the Goofy in WDW, all I can say is, AMAZING! To anyone out there contemplating running the half at DL for their first race, just DO IT! Of course, you will have to train, but you've got lots of time til September. YOU CAN DO IT! I am living proof one can achieve their goals. I set out on my Goofy path in Sept. It was my first full marathon, and of course, doing the half and the 5K the days before was scaring me that I wouldn't finish.....but I did. Adrenaline will push you through if you are at the end of the race. It's just so much fun and definitely an experience I will remember forever. I couldn't have asked for anything more for my first full marathon experience. I am going to DL as well to get the Coast to Coast. Cannot wait! Cheers!

Plane tickets purchased. Room reserved. Registered for race(s), because if I'm making the trip, I might as well do both races.

Kinda hoping for a roommate to cut expenses, but we'll see how things shake out.

Where is everyone staying? How long are you staying? I am going to sign up soon (start of February) but I don't know the other details. I don't know if I can really take any time off for the race, so it may be a quick 3 day weekend (who wouldn't want to get on a plane the day after a race?) I just don't know what life will be like that far in advance.

I am staying Saturday night and Sunday night. Don't know where yet. I live about and hour and 15 minutes away but I don't want to drive down the morning of plus I think we have to pick up our packets on Saturday and I want to hit the parks on Saturday. Then after the race I want a room so I can shower and relax before I hit the parks again. I may be going to Disneyland on Monday if DBF wants to otherwise (he's not a big Disney lover like me, 3 days in a row will be pushing it:rotfl:) we will just check out and head home.

few people I saw were wearing the shirt during the race. I changed into mine after the race and wore it in the parks. The single use camera wasn't there last year, that's an nice idea. On course "refreshments" were water and powerade every few miles, and at mile 10 they also gave out those disgusting clif shot energy things. blech. after the race they handed out fruit, water, powerade, and clif bars.

Kirkson's got the same memory of the refreshments that I have. Post-race they had a cool towel - very nice but don't use it to mop off your eyes - it's lemony (or minty??) - and a little painful. Postrace refreshements, I think included bananas, oranges, energy bars...I don't remember what else - a muffin maybe?

On-Course Disney Entertainment includes characters inside the parks and at the finish line, local high school cheerleaders, marching-type bands, some dancers...and maybe a mariachi band, I want to say.

Regarding wearing race shirts: in general most runners only choose to do this if something unexpected occurs in, or in the case of The Race for the Cure in which survivors wear their pink race shirts. Especially for a longer race, most people want to race in something they have trained in and washed at least a few times. Some people do wear the race shirt on race day, but most do not.

Oh, and you didn't ask about the personalized bib, but it will have your first name on it as well as your number. A tip for first-time racers: wear it on your front so that you will be able to find your race photos and people along the course will be able to cheer you on. Many people with experience in other sports assume the number goes on the back, but the front is where you definitely want to wear it.

I can't wait to see the 5 year commemorative medal as well!

I will be completing the 1/2 at DLR. It will be my third half and this time I got my husband to join me. I will be going for the Coast-2-Coast this year. Completed the 1/2 at WDW in January 2010. I have also recruited some friends and family to join me so probably have about 8 people that will be walking with me. My sister and I usually complete them together so it will be nice to have other family join us. Good Luck.

We booked Disneyland Hotel (2 rooms) with 3 day hopper tickets and transfers from LAX with get travel dot com. Each room (1 room 2 adults, the other 1 adult, 1 child age 10, so really an adult) was just under $800 plus the tickets which were discounted. DH really wanted to stay right at DL, we could have gotten a good neighbor hotel for less thru them. Their website it pretty good with all the pricing and the guy Bill called DH right away and was very helpful.

I think we are probably staying at the Desert Inn and Suites. We stayed there last year and it worked out well. My Dad loves that hotel, so we stay there. Not the cheapest place, but it is nice that it is so close.

What kind of discounts do you get on hotels and tickets if you book the package? I just ignored my email from them figuring it wouldn't really be worth it, but maybe I will look into it.

Wow! Six pages in and this thread is still going strong! Thank you to everyone who replied to my OP. My original deal with my DH was that if we got APs instead of PHs for our December 2009 DLR visit, I would train with him to do the half-marathon. We got the APs and I started out with the C25K program January 1st! I'm actually really, really enjoying the program so far and while a half-marathon still seems like a big jump from where I'm at, I also know I have seven months to keep slowly building up my endurance. I feel good each time I get out and do a little more.

Thank you so much for the coupon code. At first I was going to wait until I completed the C25K program before registering for the Half, but I started worrying about it selling out. While I know about another Half happening right around that same time here in the Sacramento area, it wouldn't be nearly as motivating to me as running at Disneyland. So, I bit the bullet and registered both DH and myself using the coupon code. Nice savings!

Cant wait for an amazing weekend. WOC should be in full force by then. Hopefully they will be shooting off the water as we run by.

And that reminds me...I would REALLY like to see Murphy (the F! dragon) out of his cave and cheering us on as we run by the Rivers of America. He doesn't have to be in AA moving around mode, but just chilling there would be cool!

After all, there were plenty of ladies in their 70's kicking my butt in the Princess Half, so I can collect at least 50 more medals before I am too old for this! :rotfl2: I would like to do at least each half marathon that Disney offers. I can't ever see myself running in a full Marathon. It isn't that I couldn't do it, I just don't want to!

I have ZERO desire to do a full marathon also! I also have very little desire to do races other than Disney ones. :lmao:

There's a lot of reasons I don't want to do them next year. The Princess is at Mardi Gras. I'm a teacher and Labor Day weekend is right at the beginning of the school year. It's not a good time to go out of state. I am going to do it this fall but to do it every fall is not likely. I may consider the WDW Half (the January one - for 2012) and/or the Wine and Dine for 2011. Money is also an issue; we are trying to save a down payment for a house.

I'm not ruling out all future races, just the Princess and theDisneyland at least for next year. :upsidedow

SHHHHHHhhhhhhh ---- dh has no idea ..............

But if I get a full time job, I just informed my girlfriend who just did the princess with me, I will do the DL 1/2. Ive never been to CA before, but the idea of the "coast to coast" medal is just wonderful.

I am hoping the race wont close, then again Disney never expected the Princess to sell out either.

Fingers crossed, I will get a full time job

Just registered my husband for the 1/2 using the coupon code posted here. Thank you!!! Are there ever codes for the 5K portion? My dd (age 10) and I will be running in the 5k but I wanted to make sure there were not any codes before I signed us up.

I think I will also have my younger girls do the kid races so it is a family event. We are so excited!

I just registered using the coupon that you guys posted. Thanks for that! This will only be my second half marathon. My first was the Disney Princess. My friend dragged me to that one and I loved it! As soon as I found out about the coast to coast medal, I was hooked. Anyone looking to share a hotel room to save some money?

Hopefully everything works out and this race is just as popular as the Princess Half was and gets you hooked too! :yay: What a great first trip to California!! Megan, I'm very careful not to talk folks into races -- there is too much investment of training time and traveling expenses. I'll tell you, though, that I have traveled from NC to CA to do this race 3 times (traveling "alone" -- meaning with my WISH buddies rather than family -- twice). The half feels more to me like a typical urban marathon than a Disney race because the parks are compact and you don't spend a lot of time in them, however I love the visit to Disneyland, the comfortable neighborly atmosphere, and the easy logistics of moving from one park to the other. Add to that that we'll have a 5th anniversary medal and World of Color to look forward to, and a collection of WISHers to run into on the course and in the parks... :) I think I'm going to enjoy myself, even though this will be a repeat trip for me.

Good luck, Megan with DBF, and with your decision.

We are very excited about going to Cali since we have never been.

Thanks guys! I won't need to get talked into training for this one as I will already be training for the Philly rock-n-roll on Sept 19. I just really need to figure out my finances to see if I can take to trip. I really want the C2C and since it is the 5th annual race, I'd like whatever medal they are giving for this. I know lots of WISHers will be there and as far as I know some people that I met at the Princess will also be there. We have a bonus meeting today so that may solidify my plans one way or the other.

The only thing that kind of is bad about the promotion is the five day park hopper. I can see needing that at WDW, but Disneyland and California Adventures are easily done in 2-3 days. Is it a ticket that never expires or is it the one that expires a year after use. I guess it is good if you live in the area, but Disneyland is on the other side of the country for me so the only time I would visit would be for the 1/2. :(

If there is anyone that does make it to the parks quite often (both Disneyland and CA, and WDW) they just started selling an annual pass this week that are good for all U.S. Disney parks, waterparks, DisneyQuest, etc. Finally! :cloud9: http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2010/03/disney-premier-passport-unveiled/ You can only purchase at the parks or Downtown Disney.

Megan, I agree with everything Wendy said - wise one that she is.

Sounds like your training will not be an issue. There will be quite a few of us in green and I'm sure we'll have some get-togethers. That Coast-to-Coast medal is awesome and I'm sure the new "special" medal will be as well. I did this race two years ago and I really enjoyed it. We'd love to see you there!

By the way, I'm thinking seriously of doing the Philadelphia RnR race, too! I won a free entry; I just need to go ahead and sign up for it. :)

You know, I'd never thought of it that way. I'm from NC, so DLR is across the country from me as well -- and the only time I go to CA is for the half. And you are correct that the tickets do expire. But because I was already planning a 4-5 day trip, it worked out nicely.

I was planning on a 3-day pass, anyway, because the parks get a bit crowded over the holiday/race weekend and it would take three days for me to visit all the attractions/parades that I'd like to -- but I'm prone to dawdling in shops and revisiting favorites :). I love that for less than $100 over the cost of my original 4-night/no park pass ressie, I'm getting a 5-day park hopper and an extra night! Score! I like getting the two FREE days because it means I can go into the park for a meal or a couple of hours on my first and last day (think World of Color the afternoon I arrive, for example). Because it's Disneyland and I don't expect to go back again, I'm happy to have the extra time.

Just a different way of looking at it, I guess. Of course, the reality is that I'm liikely to spend enough on food and drink on my FREE days that Disney will more than make up for the "bargain" I'm getting on my package. :rotfl2: They're in business to make money after all -- and they are exceptionally good at it. ;)

The DLR/WDW pass is very cool -- though I can't imagine ever being in the income bracket to have one. But again, it probably makes sense for some folks -- maybe DVCers with the means to travel. You've got to give it to Disney -- they sure know how to separate us from our money! :rotfl:

So my wife and I are both ready to sign up, but have a couple of questions. We have a 13 year old daughter and 10 year old son. Wife and I are both planning on the half. Our 13 year old daughter would also like to do the half. She is very fit and matches me stride for stride on training runs. Son also thinks he wants to do the half, but that's just not realistic. The questions I have are:

1)How strict is the 14 year old requirement for the half? Do you have to provide proof of age or can we just sign her up and say she's 14?
2)Since our son can only do the 5k on Saturday can my wife or I accompany him without paying another $50 in registration fee? Seems since we would both be doing the half maybe we wouldn't have to.
3)And just out of curiosity, why is this scheduled for Labor Day weekend? Isn't that a time that would normally see large crowds without an event like this?

TIA for any input!

I ran with a lady in the half at Disneyworld that had just about the identical situation. Her daughter was also 13 and they would not accept her due to the 14 year old requirement. I didn't get into the specifics of how they proved that, but based on them asking for identification that included your birthdate when you picked up your bib, I would imagine that they would require a birth certificate. She can do it next year. :)

In order to accompany your son, you do have to pay the registration fee. You get a medal and essentially you are paying for that. You pay for each race, not the weekend and there are no exceptions nor are they transferable. I know a few people who tried to get into the 5k that were registered for the half and they would have had to pay the additional money. So, they sucked it up and ran the half.

Labor Day is just what Disney chose. It appears that it has been that way since the beginning. With people already having time off due to the holiday, it makes it a bit easier to get out there and it also means there are more people to cheer you on along the way!

The Disney people are very responsive with questions - and I believe the contact e-mail is on the registration page. It never took very long to get an answer so I would recommend contacting them for more specifics. Good Luck!

Actually, the first DL half was around the 3rd weekend in Sept, not Labor Day weekend. From what I understand, having it on Labor Day weekend is better all around for Disney - logistically. I would prefer a different weekend due to the large crowds in the parks during the Labor Day holiday.

So I already registered dh for the 1/2 marathon portion but am now getting ready to register myself and dd 10 for the 5K event and had to stop at shirt size question. For those who have run before, is it a tech shirt or standard t shirt for the 5k event? And if so, for either one, how is the sizing? Seeing as there is no separate mens/ womens sizes offering, I am assuming standard t shirt sizing but wanted to be sure.

Also, can shirts be exchanged for different sizes at packet pickup day if needed? I am guessing no as they would rightfully order only what was needed but thought I would make sure :-)

Thanks everyone! SO pumped up to be a part of this event!!!

We are totally booked now! Flying in on Friday and staying through Tuesday. It will be my only trip to Disney this year and I am hoping to jam a lot of fun into those five days. Great that Disney is running the 5 for 3 deal on tickets. That saved us quite a bit. We are staying at the Del Sol - right across the street. It is pretty bare bones, but has a mini fridge and microwave, so we will hit a store on the way from the airport. Filling up 3 rooms in the place for me, my parents, and my sis in law. there will be 4 of us running. Should be fun!

I didn't run the 5K last year, but I saw the shirts. They were standard T-shirts for that event. The half is a tech shirt. It seemed that they were all men's sizing (if that is what you mean by standard sizing). There were people standing around asking for different sizes, but I dont' know if Disney did an exchange or not.

Sorry I am not more helpful. I am sure someone else has better information than I do.

That's pretty much all you have to worry about at DL. The section by Splash Mountain, one overpass and a slight elevation increase in the Honda Center parking lot, which looks a whle lot worse that it is.

The race does start and finish near the DL Hotel. We've stayed at the DL hotel the last 2 years and it has been great! Not like the princess 1/2 where you have to get up 4 hours before the run starts! The last .1 mile runs right by the DL Hotel. We'll be at the DL Hotel again this year!

What I like about DL is that there are lots of less expensive hotel choices within walking distance of the start line. At WDW, you almost need to stay on property. If you want to sleep in a little longer at WDW you need to stay at one of the monorail resorts and that can be a bit expensive. :guilty:

I'll go ahead and gather some names and if Padstack or the other poster wants to keep up with the list, I can bow out. I certainly don't want to step on any toes. I don't know how I missed that thread last night but I did. :headache:

Question for Coast to Coasters: Do you take your medal from WDW with you so that you can have pictures taken with all 3 medals? Is that crazy? Just wondering since we are travelling light, but I really want a pic of me at DL with all 3 medals.

I know you are traveling light...but BRING YOUR MEDAL. Seriously, you have earned it and it is a blast to do pictures afterwards with the characters. They know what is going on and really make a big deal about the medal. I may be sleeping with my C2C on that night. :cloud9:

The 1/2 is at 98% capacity.

The website says 98%, but when you try to register, it says that the event is full.
