according to the LA Times, Disney has pulled the plug on the project

I'm relieved a bit by this...
Perhaps they could do a refreshing of the original film with upgraded effects or something

OT but do you think this movie Avatar is being pushed so hard because it is as terrible as it looks? Who is the target for this thing?

When I saw the picture in first run my thoughts were to buy several copies of the book and send them to the producer, director and several others and say "Now that you've made the movie you may have time to read the book".

20,000 Leagues didn't need to be remade. The original is an excellent movie that holds up quite well even by today's "standards".

Good! My respect for Rich Ross and Bob Iger just went way up. You cannot remake what cannot be topped, and the original "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" cannot be topped, even with the advancement in today's SFX.
