Sounds like a really cool ship. A little disappointed that they're not bringing in 3rd party vendors for the restaurants like some of the other new ships on other cruiselines. But there's no doubt, this ship will have a major wow factor.

I don't think I'd want 3rd party restaurants on ship. Let it be Disney all the way!

The Dream doesn't sail until 2011. Podcast cruise 2.0 is on the Wonder 12/12/2010.
If there is a podcast cruise on the Dream you've got a bit of a wait. Sorry.

Went on the Disney Wonder last year and thought the food was horrible. From top to bottom, A to Z, there were no redeemable qualities about the food. None. At least with 3rd party companies, you usually know the quality of food that you're getting.

Wow. That's totally opposite to our experience on the Wonder in May. We found the food to be great at the buffet, the dining room and at Palo.

Disney outsources enough, I'm happy whenever they keep something in house. I thought the food was pretty good. Each evening there was something I enjoyed even if it meant a little alteration. They never batted an eye and got it right the first time every time.
The rum was also very well prepared.

From what we saw and the food we had, there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that Disney ships do not cook food on the ships. Every bit of it has to be cooked and prepared by 3rd party food service companies off of the ship. And then frozen and reassembled on the ship. All the cooking staff on the ship does is reheat food and put it on plates. My advice to anyone going is to bring your own favorite food seasonings with you, because the food has absolutely no taste.

From what you saw? Did you actually go into the kitchen and witness this? Every meal? I don't think so and I don't agree at all with your assessment.
There are certain things I'm sure that are frozen and what they call scrambled eggs are disgusting. But to say everything is pre-prepared is way off.
You have tastebuds like a doorstop. ;)

I'm confused.
You claim the food was outsourced.
You claim the food was bad.
Logic would state then, the outsourced food is bad food.
This does not align with your original argument, that the food should be outsourced.
Although I did not find all the food to my liking (I am picky), I did find everything that I tried to be flavorful and most assuredly decent.

You should really schedule the kitchen tour the next time you are aboard the ship.
I'm not arguing the point of whether you thought the food was good or bad. That's opinion and everyone has one.
I can however, tell you that what you have posted above is patently not true.
Also, you should have let someone aboard ship know how you felt about the food and you would have witnessed them jumping through hoops in order to please you.
Again...schedule the kitchen tour and let us know what you think after that.

I guess that was a little confusing. What I meant by the statement “what I saw" was the food that I saw. The look of the food on the plates. The manner in which it was prepared. The taste of the food confirmed my suspicion. What I meant by 3rd party food services preparing the food, was that a company like Golden West cooks, prepares and freezes all of the food, and delivers same to the ships to await heating and plating. What I meant by I wished they're were 3rd party vendors on the ship instead of the Disney Dog food eateries, I would rather eat fast food like Taco Bell, Popeye’s Chicken, Canes Chicken, Johnny Rockets, etc. instead of the quality that Disney puts out.

Sorry but this confirms it. You have been programmed to eat over processed, over seasoned/salted foods, and anything that doesn't taste good in your mouth is dog food. :rotfl2: Your tastebuds have become so desensitized that all your food needs to be over seasoned. :sad2:
I cannot believe you are posting this stuff. I really hope for the others sake that they don't believe you.
Salt and seasonings are meant to "enhance and bring out the natural flavor" of foods. Not be the primary component of a dish.

First of all, we rarely ever eat at fast food restaurants. We rarely eat at chain restaurants period. We normally stick to our local mom and pop restaurants. As you know, my response was only to say that I would rather eat at a fast food chain restaurant before eating at Disney's Purina Chuck Wagons on the ship.

I would have to agree with George on this one. If Disney were to ever outsource some aspect of food production, I would hope they would make better choices than what you are suggesting. Although I am guilty of eating at places such as these more often than I would like, it is due to the convenience factor, not food quality. On a cruise ship, I am not rushed to find a quick meal in between life's events. I would much rather Disney (or any other cruise line) keep the food the way it is as opposed to bringing fast food chains aboard.

I think this definitely falls into the category of "to each his own".
If you visit the cruise board, I am certian you will be able to find threads where folks are discussiong which menu items are considered "dont miss" items.
It's all a matter of personal taste.

Other than the food, Disney ships and cruises are absolutely wonderful. The ship's amenities and service are second to none. Cruises are a great place to just relax and just do what you want. We love the Disney cruise for several reasons: the ship, Atlantis and there's no place that compares to Cast-a-way key in terms of beach fun. You pay a premium for those amenities, though and it's just a shame that that premium doesn't translate to better food.

First of all, there wasn't a single isolated problem with the food. It was a breath thing with all of the food, all over the ship. There's an issue with the quality of the comodity itself. Typically, an excellent chef can cover up poor quality with quality preparation. That quality preparation wasn't their either. Giving the Chef some benefit of the doubt, they do prepare thousands of meals per day, though that doesn't excuse everything. Other Cruise lines have much better food. I'm going to have to fess up now. We did a land/cruise package earlier in the year. Spent 4 nights at WDW and 3 nights on the Wonder. During our stay at WDW, we did a signature dining tour each night. First Citricos, California Grill, Chefs de France and our last night Narcoosees. We then left for the ship. I guess we were spoiled by then but wow. The food quality difference was the difference between McDonalds and Narcoosees.

I was really underwhelmed with the food on the ship as well. I'd not go so far as to say that it was swill, and I wouldn't avoid eating on a Disney cruise because of it, but it was not as good as I expected it would be.
I am not a picky eater, I am not a food snob. I'll eat everything, and unless something is truly bad, I will not usually complain. Therefore, I wouldn't complain about the food I had on the Wonder. But on any future Disney cruises, dining will not be the one thing I'll be looking forward to.
But PLEASE don't put a fast food chain on the ships! I'm not a food snob, but I can't choke most of that stuff down!

Just want to be clear about my self proclaimed food snobness. It is not that I only like "fancy" food, in fact diners and little hole in the wall places are some of our favorites. For example...if we want to eat pizza I would rather take a drive and go to a place with good quality ingredients and a better product, rather then get Dominoes.

There is a Johnny Rockets on several of the Royal Caribbean ships.
There is an additional cost associated with eating there. As guests who have achieved a certain level in RCCL loyalty program, we receive free coupons to dine at Johnny Rockets each time we cruise.
The place is usually empty, but when it it is crowded, it's usually teens.
Most often our coupns go unused.
As the restaurant reviewer for the Dis Unplugged.....I would agree that the food is not outstanding some cases. We have said so on the podcast.
With that being said.....I have found something that I've eaten and
enjoyed at each and every meal.
My bigger issue than food quality is that I dont enjoy dressing up for dinner. I dont like having a scheduled dining time. I have a schedule at home and I enjoy the freedom a vacation offers.
In light of that, I find that we eat hot dogs, chciken sandwiches, burgers, pizza and room service alot of the time.
This is not a comment on the food, but the way we enjoy our vacation time.
Changing for dinner, a two hour meal and changing back into comfortable clothes often takes too big a chunk out the day.

We've taken the kitchen tour and I can assure you that the food is not just reheated on the ship. They baked us chocolate chip cookies which weren't reheated.
While I didn't love everything on the ship that has more to do with personal taste than anything else. I don't like Krispy Kreme donuts but that doesn't meant that they are close to dog food.
I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with the food. If it was that bad you should have spoken to your server and they would have found something for you to eat. They really do try to please everyone and don't want anyone to not enjoy their meals. One meal I didn't like what I had chosen (the food was good I just didn't like the sauce) and the server brought me something else without a problem.

My son is a soldier and I've seen and tried some of his MRE's. I think everyone should have some of these and then complain about food anywhere else! Well, let's hope that nobody is so cold and hungry on the ship, that they are reduced to eating MREs!
I've been so poor that I've been reduced to eating stale donuts and cat food during rent week. I've also had some of the finest foods known to man. That doesn't mean that I can't discern between the two.

I think I'd be ok if they outsourced the food by the pool (burger, strips, and pizza), but anything more than that I would be disappointed. We really enjoyed the food on the Wonder, in fact we thought it was so rich and flavorful we were ready for something "normal" the day we got off the ship.
