If you could only bring one pair of shoes on the ship - what kind would it be? Male and female answers appreciated. Not sure I'll get my DW to bring just one pair - but let's be hypothetical. :D

That would be hard to do. I would think that you'd look funny wearing sandals with your suit to dinner, or wearing your dress shoes with black knee highs with your shorts during the day.
You COULD probably get away with one pair of daytime shoes that you wear onto the ship and one pair of dress shoes for the evenings. It would require careful packing though...
I'm planning on wearing on a pair of sandals, having a second in my bag, and a pair of dressy shoes for formal nights.

If I *had* to bring just one pair of shoes, it would be my tan sandles. They're a flat slide-on shoe. They can be worn with shorts, casual dresses, and perfect for the beach since the sand just comes right off. I can't see me wearing them with anything for formal night though, so I guess I'd be eating at Topsiders :)

My Tevas (but I've also got to have a pair of dressy sandals, don't worry, they pack small.)

I agree with Minnie's Guy only one pair of shoes I wouldn't be able to go either. Just for the 4 day I had 4 pairs of shoes and wore all of them. Plus with DH and 2 DS, we had a small suitcase filed with just shoes. My DH would probably like it if he could only have his sneakers, but did bring shoes for him to wear at dinner. LarryGadget good luck in getting your wife to bring just one pair.

I have a pair of black flat strappy sandals that go with either causual or dressy clothes, and I have been able to get by with just wearing those. I do however take a pair of water shoes as we snorkel lots so i guess i only pack one pair in addition to what i wear on the way there...

On my first cruise, I packed a pair of teva type sandals and a pair of dress shoes (3 inch heels) for evening wear. These did fine for the 4 day cruise and 4 days at WDW. DH took a pair of dress shoes for dinner and a pair of tennis shoes for everywhere else.
I may be female but I believe the less packed the better:D

My Sebago Docksiders. Looks good, wears well with socks or without. May look funny with a tux but "I am a pair of brown shoes in a black suit world anyway".
I get it! This is one of those sick, demented threads meant to get us agitated and keep us up at night, right? ;)
Larry, behave yourself or we'll have to tell your DW! One pair of shoes, indeed!

I don't actually believe I could get DW to take one pair. I'm just trying to understand what we really need to bring. I will bring docksiders and tennis shoes, I guess. But can I wear the docksiders with a sportcoat? - I guess so. I really like my sandals - they are soo comfortable. But I'm sure I'll need tennis shoes for walking. You can see my dilemma. So now it looks like I'm bringing 3 - guess that gives the DW the right to bring 6. 2 DDs will surely bring 2 each - maybe 3. Such a simple thing shouldn't be so hard. Hmmmm. Maybe I'll post the question to the discussion board.

I am not a "shoe person" but I took 3 pairs of "shoes" on my cruise...my sneakers, sandels I wore to dinner and my water shoes which I wore a lot...I don't like walking barefoot where other people have been (last time I did it at the wter park I came home with athletes foot YUK!!!) so I wore them most of the time.

No Fawn the one tread that will keep us up at night is what shoes to wear on the dreaded Formal Night

It would have to be my dress shoes since I wouldnt wear a nice dress with anything but.
However, realistically speaking this is what I HAD to bring...
White zipper shoes(comparable to sneakers) for shorts
Black sandals for my sundress and capri pants
Black Sandals/Beach Shoes for the pool & beach(not dressy enough to replace the other sandals)
Black dress shoes for our nights in Tritons & Palos
I also brought my running/walking sneakers but could have gotten away without them.

Heck, I can't even get through an 8 hour work day with just one pair of shoes and you want me to wear just one pair over 7 days! Surely you jest.
Seriously I would say -
Birkenstocks with shorts and sundresses. They're so ugly they go with anything.
Black Ecco to go with my dockers for casual dress dinners.
Black pumps for formal nights
Tennis shoes or sport tevas for active excursions. Tevas work well on the beach as well.
I guess that would be my minimum list. DH also brings 4 pairs - sandals, walking shoes, dress shoes for suit and tux shoes for formal nights. At least my four take up WAY less room than his humungus (sp) foot coverings.

I could get away with one pair of flat sandals & one pair of dressy black sandals. We have a hard & fast rule that nobody is allowed more than 2 pairs of shoes.

Minimum of 2 - dressy & casual, but for WDW it's got to be 2 pairs of casual, to rotate the blisters :D
Good luck with your packing!

I just had to reply because I got a kick out of this thread. A woman restricted to selecting only one pair of shoes to take on vacation is a horrible thought. If a formal night is on the itinerary I could manage bringing 3 pair: a casual walking shoe, a black sandal that works day-to-evening and a dressy formal pair. If no formal evening, i could pass on the dressy pair.
I realize that you want your DW to pack reasonably, but if she is a shoe-person and can't handle a shoe limit; let her bring what she wants, otherwise, you will be shopping for shoes on vacation!
If you really want to be a tease, remind your dw & dd's that one pair can be worn and not packed!!! Happy packing!

i suppose it depends on whether you're talking about the 7 day or 3/4 day...
we were on the 3 day cruise and only wore our sandals the whole time...
but then again we live in a very hot climate and wear our sandals all year long.....so it was the norm for us...
i'm sure people thought us odd for wearing sandals to dinner, but it's none of their business what i choose to have on my feet...
you should do what makes you comfortable....
besides, on the 3 day cruise pretty much anything goes.....there were people who came to dinner in very nearly formal wear....while most others were extremely casual......you are on vacation after all.....
my daughter wore jeans to dinner (because that's what she wanted to wear and i learned long ago to pick my fights with her....designer jeans at dinner is not one of them)....
she didn't feel at all uncomfortable or out of place...
so....do what makes you feel good....don't worry about what other people think.....

Alright! I must know! What are Tevas? We must not have them in Michigan! Either that, or am I out of style???

When people say "Tevas" they are most likely referring to that brand of all-purpose type of sandal. They do make other kinds of shoes too though.
