I know it's not being offered at this point. But as we are starting to consider our next trip, can anyone give any info on how it works when it is offered?

We were there for Free Dining 2008 and 2009. The offer was for late August to late September. (we went in Sept.) The offer came out in April, that's when we booked in 2008 and we booked for the free offer in 2009 when we there in 2008, "Bounceback offer" it was called. We had a flyer in our room.

Basically, you have to get a package with a full-price room with tickets and you get a dining plan for free. Sometimes the free plan is the regular DDP no matter where you stay; other times, if you stay at a Value resort, you get the QSDP free instead. You can pay the difference to upgrade to a higher plan, though (DxDP or DDP if at a Value).
Typically, the free dining plan is a good deal for families who stay in Values or Mods, and less of a good deal for those that stay Deluxe (a good room discount may be worth more than the daily cost of the DDP).
Also, Disney Visa card holders generally get the first free dining offer. Stay tuned to the DIS to be the first to know when/if it's offered in 2010.

It is the basic Dining plan for free with the purchase of a FULL PRICED , non discounted Disney MYW resort pkg including a minimum of a 1 day park ticket per person. It is announced in late March and early APril for trips in Aug/Sept. It is usually offered to Disney Visa cardholders first , then the general public. This year was the FIRST year Disney expanded free Dining throughout Oct,Nov,and Dec for the general public. In 2008, it was offered on select dates Oct-Dec for Disney Visa card holders only. Before that it was never offered outside the traditional late summer dates.
