I love Mickey just the way he is! Not sure how I would feel if he changed. Why fix something that isn't broken?

I agree, leave him alone. I believe all generations have come to love and accept Mickey for who he has always been, a simple happy mouse. Taking off his tail years back was not a big deal but I don't think this is going to be a smart move. Is Minnie next? Are they thinking of maybe cropping Goofy & Pluto's ears?

I wish they would go find something more constructive to deal with and leave the poor mouse be. JMHO

AMEN! My thoughts exactly.

Maybe now they'll make Pluto into a pit bull.

This seems like a very risky remake of a beloved icon. Some things you just don't mess with. What would Walt say?

I am reserving judgment until I see how it turns out. Sometimes change isn't as bad as we feared it would be :)

Maybe I'm reading way too much into this , but could this have anything to do with trying to incorporate Marvel characters into the parks in the future? That concept picture of Mickey in the video game looks devilish. Just sayin'....

I think it's cool and exciting they are going to change Mickey back to his roots a bit. As long as they don't go overboard.

You know, Walt approved a change of Mickey back in the early 40's and it worked. It may work again.

I hope they don't change him too much - he's so stinkin' cute the way he is!

My favorite quote from that article is, "One false move and Disney could have New Coke on its hands."

I think the article got it wrong...it's not the overall design of Mickey that is being changed, just what he is going to look like in this game (Epic Mickey). In the game he travels to a much darker world created by Yen Sid where old Disney characters go when they are forgotten so the re-design is fitting for this game. I think they basically took what is a throw away story about a video game and tried to turn it into an article to get people worked up by saying they are changing they way Mickey is going to be portrayed en mass. They did the same thing a few years ago with the Looney Tunes characters when they created a futuristic Bugs Bunny cartoon and all of the main characters got a re-design. It was only for that one show, not for "everyday use".

I'm interested to wait and see what changes may happen. I think it can totally work to have a more mischievous (a la 1929) Mickey in the video game and I'm interested to see how much they would change him outside the game.

Once Mickey originally became popular, he assumed the master of ceremonies role, while Donald took over as the troublemaker. I'm curious how Disney will keep Mickey as the face of the company if they move toward a mouse with a different personality.

Regardless, that was a really great article! Thanks for posting. :thumbsup2

I'm all for change. Mickey was much more adventurous back in the day, and now he's oversweetened. I want a tougher Mickey Mouse...they made 'em tougher back then, y'know.

Why would Walt be spinning in his grave over the fact that they're making Mickey more like he was when Walt was alive? Walt is the one who created him as a mischevious character, though he's been toned down quite a bit in recent years. Watch some of the black and white Mickey cartoons, or look at some of the old Mickey comics if you want to see what Mickey used to be like. I'm really looking forward to Epic Mickey. It looks like it will be a great game and it will be nice to see Mickey have a little more depth than he has had in recent years. I hope this will be popular enough that we'll get to see the older style Mickey again in some new cartoons or movies, as well!

I know that, I've watched the old black and whites from the 1920s. I love them! I especially love that back in the day, Mickey could snap Minnie's undergarments and no one would think twice of it. :happytv: Can't do that anymore.

But I don't think Walt ever intended for Mickey Mouse to be edgy or dark. He was always mischievous and adventurous but never dark. That is what I think will cause Walt to spin in his grave. Mickey as created a wholesome, lovable character that America (and the world) fell in love with. Make Mickey mischievous and adventurous again, but do we have to make him dark and edgy, That is what I do not agree with. If my Mickey Mouse stuffed animated character looked like the Mickey they show in the article, I would of have nightmares as a kid! I don't think Walt intended that.:scared1:

I do understand that Mickey has changed a few times, and those moves proved to be good for the company. I really do think that this "new Mickey" would only appeal to the Disney XD crowd unless they soften him up a bit from the Epic Disney image. Like I said, I don't want my Mickey plush glaring at me while I sleep. Aaawwwkkkkwwwaaarrrddd.....

Disney is again going after the tween/teen/young adult boy market with this. It's a demographic they have the hardest time with. Disney has to be very careful with this though. If they keep this Mickey just to the game I don't really have a problem with it. I wouldn't want to see this version anywhere else though. Like a "mean" Mickey meet and greet! :scared1: I actually hope the game does well though, maybe then Disney will start developing and putting out other good games, because Disney games generally are pretty disappointing.

I'm looking forward to this videogame. I've always thought Lucky the Rabbit was cute (ummmmh maybe in this videogame NOT THAT CUTE :)). If they change mickey like this for the videogame I wouldn't be "upset", if they make mickey "meaner" in the park, I wouldn't be that enthutiastic. Does anyone know when this videogame will be on the stores?

Walt absolutely would not spin in his grave. The homogenized Mickey when times warranted it. Now Mickey Mouse is a corporate image more than a character kids rally around. He was a feisty mouse back during his heyday. It's a good idea to try and do something with him!

I don't think they've set an exact date other than saying Fall 2010...of course depending on how far along they are that could very well be pushed back

I found this article very interesting, thank you! I am mom to 2 teens who love disney, but are the video game playing, texting demographic that they are going for. I think this will be wildly popular with teens if done right, like "Kingdom Hearts".

As for changing the character? It seems from the article that they will be cautious with this, so I'm open.

I think the quote hits it right on the head. " Holy cow, we have a chance to MESS WITH one of the greatest characters."

The Neal Gabler biography of Walt Disney maintains that Mickey's "plucky" image began to change with the introduction of Donald Duck. Donald soon became the mischevous one and Mickey was left to always be the hero. So, don't blame the new people at Disney. Blame Donald.

I love the idea of returning to Mickey's roots. I guess that's why I always favor the "vintage" looking Mickey than the modern versions..... (have sticky notes in the shape of the DL Death Wheel Mickey face that I COVET!!!)

I agree I would like to see Mickey take back some of the traits that the other fab 5 took on :thumbsup2 I love Mickey but Donald is my fave because he does have so much personality!

Whoa, this could be very risky. Look at how they describe it.

But Mickey won’t be bland anymore, either. “I wanted him to be able to be naughty — when you’re playing as Mickey you can misbehave and even be a little selfish,” Mr. Spector said.

Not sure I want a "selfish" Mickey as we have more than enough selfish, naughty characters.
I find it interesting that they also equated being good and kind with being "bland".
