Please Please Please!

Go to Home Depot on your day off and buy a fire extinguisher!

Get the one marked ABC.... That takes care of all three types of fires!

We have had one for 10 years, right next to the washing machine in the garage, and I always shrugged off Shrek when he said "you never know!" He is Mr. "Safety First" in our house.

Well let me tell you what happened today!

I was just getting ready to jump in the shower for work, when someone starts banging on my front door, turning the knob, screaming, ringing the doorbell! (I thought someone was trying to break in) I looked out the window to find my 16 year old neighbor from across the street freaking out!

"I set my house on fire, HELP ME!"

So I grab the phone and called 911, went to the garage and there was our fire extinguisher right where it should be. I ran across the street and walked in the house, and the entire kitchen is in flames! I'm talking to 911 all this time, explaining what is going on, and he tells me "Your not in the house are you? Get out now!" :lmao:

Ya right! At this point that panic/emercency mode kicked in, and the rest is kind of a fog..... I pulled the pin on the extinguisher and aimed low, and low and behold about 5 minutes later the fire was out! Long story short, I found a neighbor to watch the kid till her parents got home, 3 Sherrifs and 6 Fire Trucks showed up, and I had to jump in the shower for work! Just my luck, 15 hot fireman and I have to leave the scene!

I swear thinking back....I should have laid in the street and pretended to have problems breathing! :rotfl2:

So anyway, Please go buy a Fire Extinguisher this week! You never know when you will need it. To save you, or a neighbor! :thumbsup2

Holy Smokes Batman!!!

We keep two in the house. I once watched a toaster oven flame and it was sickening how quickly it happened.

You're a hero Mike!!

Hope those firemen come back to give you a proper thank you!

You're a hero Mike!!

Not a hero at all, perhaps a good neighbor who was prepared! I'll give you that!

That's why I shared this story, BE PREPARED FOLKS! It pays off! :thumbsup2

Thank heaven you were there for that child, had an extinguisher and KNEW HOW TO USE IT. That's part of it too, not just buying the thing, eh?

You do have know to aim at the base of the flames and sweep, just as you did.

Gosh, that kid's parents will have something to be very thankful for on Thanksgiving, won't they.

Thank you for sharing this with us Mike. But mostly? Thanks for being the sort of person who cared enough to intervene in what would have been a disaster had you not.

Great job, Mike!

You ARE a hero!

Just ask the neighbors! I'm sure they'll agree!

Hey!!! Maybe we can ask the fire department to have a little ceremony where Mike gets to meet all those "hot" (sweaty????) firemen as a reward for his quick thinking! ::yes:: :teeth:

Oh, I'd add one additional thing to your advice about having an extinguisher, Mike. Get the biggest one you can handle. I once had a tiny one in my car and it was nearly useless when I ended up needing it, so I learned that lesson the hard way.

Bigger, better, faster, more... eh? :teeth:

Hey I have always said..."Be Safe, sleep with a firefighter" I do everynight!!!!

ALthough we have multiple smoke dectors AND change the batteries and have several fire extinguishers!!!

Good job Mike!!!! Sorry you had to skip out on the firefighters....that could have been your reward for being such a good neighbor.

I'm glad you were there and prepared!

(We have 3 fire extinguishers, 2 carbon monoxide detectors and 5 smoke detectors)

I'll add a plug for CO detectors, too -- they save lives!
