Hello fellow Disers! There have been so many questions about making your own autograph books that I thought I would write up a simple guide. Please feel free to ask questions! :goodvibes
How to make a 5x7 Autograph Book (Spiral Bound):
Step 1: Browse the DISign threads to find autograph card styles that you like (see list below). Enlarge each image by clicking on it, then right click, choose “save picture as”, and save it to a folder on your computer.
Step 2: Open a new Word document. Set the margins to 1” on the top and bottom. Copy and paste each autograph card into the document, leaving one space between each card. You will be able to fit two cards per page if you invert the bottom image on each page (rotate 180 degrees). Right click on each picture after it is pasted and size it to 4x6.
Step 3: Print pages onto cardstock. 65 lb cardstock will do, but you can use 110 lb for sturdier pages.
Step 4: Cut each card out, leaving a 1” margin on the top of each card, and ½” margin on each side.
Step 5: Arrange your cards in alphabetical order (trust me, it will be easier to find the character you want when you are in a hurry), and place the covers over the front and back. Take them to have them bound at an office supply store (I took mine to FedEx/Kinkos). Be sure to tell them you want it bound at the top and not on the side. If you do not want to spiral bind your cards, you can always slip them into a photo album that you have decorated “Disney style” with stickers, etc. It makes a great way to carry them, and then you can scrapbook with them or have the ones that you had signed bound when you get back!
[Alternative method: If you don’t want to use up all of that printer ink/toner, you can upload these images and have them printed out as photographs. I would recommend matte finish if it is available. Pick up your photos and then go on to Step 5. Photos can be spiral bound or placed in a photo album.]
How to make the Covers for your Autograph Book:
Step 1: Choose your design and have it personalized. Enlarge the image by clicking on it, then right click, choose “save picture as”, and save it to a folder on your computer. Copy and paste the image into a Word document. Right click on each picture after it is pasted and size it to 4x6. Print the image onto card stock.
Step 2: Cut each cover image out, leaving a 1” margin on the top of each card, and ½” margin on each side. For sturdier covers, glue onto a 5x7 piece of chipboard. If you are using chipboard, cover the underside with blank cardstock (add stickers or stamps to make it pretty) or a piece of Disney scrapbooking paper.
Step 3: Laminate your cover (with chipboard or without). I used clear Contact Paper (available at Walmart, etc.), but you could also have it laminated at any office supply store.
How to Make an Autograph Photobook:
Step 1: Browse the DISign threads to find autograph card styles that you like (see list below). Enlarge each image by clicking on it, then right click, choose “save picture as”, and save it to a folder on your computer.
Step 2: Upload your images to the digital photobook company of your choice. We have had good reports from people who have used Shutterfly, Artscow, Snapfish, and Walgreens.
Step 3: Design your photobook following the site’s directions. There are always many options for page colors, fonts, and styles. Go ahead, unleash your creative side! Be sure to arrange your characters in alphabetical order in order to find them more easily when you spot a character.
A Few Final Thoughts:
1: Be sure to include a few generic pages at the end of your book in case you encounter any characters that are not included in your book.
2: I recommend using regular-sized retractable Sharpies. They come in many different colors, they will write on cardstock, photographs, and photobooks without smearing, and they can be easily handled by all of the characters (even the ones that wear gloves).
3: When you first go into the park pick up a park map that has the character greeting locations marked with an icon of a Mickey hand. This will tell you where and when the characters will be available so you can arrive early and be near the front of the line to avoid wait times. You can also ask where characters will be at Guest Relations at a Disney World park or resort (sometimes they can tell you where a character is meeting people that day).
4: Remember that these books are for PERSONAL USE ONLY. Making them and selling them on ebay, or even to friends and relatives, is a violation of Disney's copyright and trademark rights!

Here is my current list of characters. It is based on who is appearing most often in the parks right now. The rest of the characters are considered "hit or miss", or "rare". I would suggest using this as a core grouping, and be sure to add in several generic pages in case you meet some for the rarer characters. I included a few others in my book that are my favorites. Good luck and have fun with your projects! :thumbsup2

Thank you so much! I am just going to attempt to make my first autograph books and this will really help me out.
Do you usually print on white card stock or another color? Silly question, but to the sheets come separately or in a package?
I bought an assorted color of card stock, but it doesn't have the weight on it anywhere.
Thanks so much.

I did all of mine on white cardstock. I bought 110 lb cardstock at Walmart - it had 250 8x10 sheets for $5. The exact weight of the cardstock isn't as important as making sure that what you have is stiffer than regular paper so that the pages don't get bent or torn. Remember, this book is going to be thrown into your Disney bag and get hauled around for several days! :goodvibes You could probably use the colored cardstock you have, but you might want to run a test sheet or two to see if the colors of the design look all right. Lighter colors will probably work better than dark. Good luck! :thumbsup2

I JUST bought this same pack of cardstock at Walmart this morning! I am getting ready to order my autograph prints on Walmart.com....and then pick them up in the am. I personally think the white paper looks better with the colored pics...I too was going to use colored cardstock but the white looked better.:cool1:

Have fun with it! Post a picture after you're finished (I'm still trying to figure out how to post my pics on here, but I hope to get them up soon). If you don't want to bind your photograph images, several people here have used plain photo albums that they decorated up "Disney Style" to keep their images in. :goodvibes

My list of pics is at 70+....I didn't want the book to be that big. What should I take out? I have all the Power Rangers...am thinking of taking them out.
70 pics is just waaaay too many for an autograph book for a 7 and 2 1/2 year old.
Help!

Great books!! Thanks for posting.
Did you use a glue stick for putting the pics on or did you print out the pics directly on the cardstock?
How many pages are these books? Did you get the clear cover over top the first page?
I can't wait to go pick my pics up after I drop DS off at school and start working on them this morning!!:banana:

I printed my images directly onto cardstock with my laser printer.
If you are having pictures printed you can either glue them onto 5x7 pieces of cardstock (leave extra space at the top for binding), or slide them into a 100 sleeve 5x7 photo album and decorate the cover.
My books ended up being 122 pages each, but that included 12 pages of generic designs, and 18 pages of character meals. I laminated the covers myself with clear contact paper, but if you have them bound they can put a clear sheet over the front cover instead if you ask them to.
Good luck with your books! Isn't this a fun project? My DS2 and DS5 are really excited about collecting autographs now! :cool1:

When you printed them at home on your home computer...how much ink did it use? Is there anyway to have it printed and bound at a kinkos? Just wondering about copyright stuff there.
MusicMouse
11-11-2009, 01:13 PM
Kinkos will bind it, but will NOT print it. Disney's IP (Intellectual Property) lawyers are very strict, and no business wants to violate copyright laws or infringe on Disney's trademarks. I used a color laser printer, but if you are worried about ink, you might want to look at these designs. http://s143.photobucket.com/albums/r132/donatalie/2008%20Autograph%20Book/
They use a lot less color and still look really cool! :goodvibes

I ordered my pics from walmart.com and had no problem. I did only a few the other day just to see if the sharpie would smear or not on them AND to see if there would be any problem for them to print them since it's disney. But I had no problems. So last night I uploaded and ordered 140 more pics.:cool1:
Will the office store bind any size or does it have to be specific like 4x6, 5x7..etc?
Just put DS down for a nap and am getting ready to cut paper and glue on the pics. I wonder if I can get away with using a gluestick or should I use scrapbooking adhesive?
MusicMouse
11-11-2009, 02:56 PM
How funny - I just put my DS down for nap, too. :) Photographs are usually not a problem for copyright issues. I'm glad that they came out well! The store should bind any size. They punch the little holes in the top and hand wire the binding in and then cut it to the right size when they get all the way through to the end. I think you would need something a little stronger than a glue stick so that you don't have to worry about them coming apart. Let me know how they turn out! :goodvibes

Musicmouse, how many pages are in those books each? I am trying to cut my pages down right now and since I have about 65 pages, I'm wondering if I need to leave more than a 1 inch margin? Remember too, I am taping the autograph pics onto the cardstock so that will make it thicker.
Thanks!

I had 122 cards in each of my books, plus the chipboard covers. The maximum thickness they can bind is 1.75" including the covers, so you should be OK. :goodvibes No, really you only need about 3/4" at the top for binding. Good luck!

Thanks for the response. What did you do with the ones you didn't get autographs for? Did you just leave them in the book?
I can't believe I'm overthinking this so much...my dd will be so happy w/ whatever I end up with and ds is 2 1/2...I can bet he won't even care. lol!

I haven't gone on my trip yet. I think I will wait and see how many autographs I actually get before I make any decisions. I hear you about being a perfectionist. This will be my boys' first trip to WDW, and I want it to be extra magical. I'm sure your kids will love your books no matter how they turn out. Just be sure to include those generic pages for the unexpected characters, and you'll be covered! :goodvibes

Our kids (4 and 3 yrs old) only know so many disney characters so I am thinking of making a plain book. What is the average number of pages that you would suggest putting in the book? I am worried that when it comes to signing the book they won't know which character it is. We do not have any reservations for meals with characters, but hoping we'll get something by the time we go.
ALso, what is better? pictures or card stock?
p.s. thank you for the guide to making the book - it was driving me crazy on trying to figure it out. :yay:

If you are going to WDW for a week, plan on seeing approximately 60 characters. I've been keeping track of people's post trip reports, and that seems to be the average. If you are thinking about making a plain book, I would suggest picking out maybe three or four generic autograph page designs and then you don't have to worry about getting characters to sign specific pages (something like this http://s143.photobucket.com/albums/r132/donatalie/2008%20Autograph%20Book/?action=view¤t=Generic3.jpg ). Natalie has several nice ones in her autograph book files ( http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2225095 ).
I would use cardstock, I think it has a nicer look and feel to it- more like an actual book, but that's really a matter of personal preference. Good luck, and feel free to ask questions as they crop up! :goodvibes

Hi, hope you can help - you replies to a post I made re printing pages. I've managed to set pages up and get two imaages per page but can't work out how to invert the second image - anyone got any tips - thanks.
MusicMouse
11-22-2009, 05:29 PM
What you need to do is right click on your image. Choose the "size" option and you will see boxes at the top for "height", "width", and "rotation". Adjust the height and width to your desired size (4"x6") and then put 180 into your rotation box. This should invert your image. Good luck, and feel free to ask if you get stuck again! :goodvibes
I will get started on this tomorrow. Only three weeks left to go.
(I should really get my act together!)
Thanks to everyone for the help and the great Disigns.

Would it be really lame to have a very basic autograph book? :confused3 I was thinking about just doing blanks for each park. I'm not sure how into this my kids are going to be. (We've never been to Disney.) And I don't have very much time.
Here's what I was thinking - Just print post cards with basic park designs using my color laser printer. Doing a cute laminated cover and binding them. Then after we go, I can add photos to the other side.
Quick and easy. That should only take about 10 hours, right? :rotfl:
I'll post pictures!

Hey, there's nothing lame about a "basic" autograph book! If you are making it with personalized covers and generic pages, it will still look cooler than the ones everybody else buys in the parks. ;) Natalie has some really awesome generic designs here: http://s143.photobucket.com/albums/r132/donatalie/2010%20Autograph%20book/?start=40 . Check the middle of the page - she has general generics and generics for each park. There are also some other styles of generic designs in her 2008 autograph book: http://s143.photobucket.com/albums/r132/donatalie/2008%20Autograph%20Book/?start=40 . Post pictures if you can, I'd love to see them! :goodvibes

For all of you headed to the parks soon, there have been a few new and/or rare characters that are now appearing regularly at the parks. These include: Scrooge McDuck, Miss Bunny (Thumper's Mom), Marie, Princess Tiana, Prince Naveen, and Terrence. Keep these in mind as you make your books, and don't forget to include a few generic pages for any characters that you weren't expecting to meet. :thumbsup2

Natalie is occasionally posting on the boards, but is not taking requests at this time. If there is a design that you would like to have personalized, you can post a thread with the design and the names you need, and often another designer will do it. There is also a great thread on how to put your own names into a design with MS Word here: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2286193

Ok, if I print out as pictures and then put them on cardstock myself (I don't have a color printer, so it would be much cheaper this way) will the characters who have stamps be able to use mine? I'm worried about it smearing. Thanks!:thumbsup2

It should, if you give it enough time to dry. If you are worried, you could have the pictures printed with a matte finish instead of a glossy finish. :goodvibes

Don't worry - you're not being a pain. :) You can buy chipboard at any craft store such as Michaels, JoAnn Fabrics, or Hobby Lobby. You'll find it with the scrapbooking supplies. You can even order it from Amazon if none if those places are near you. I had two (very thick) books bound at Kinkos for around $10. Be sure to get the spiral binding (it looks like coated wire, but it's a type of plastic), and make sure they understand that you want it bound on the top and not the side. I'd love to see a picture when you get finished, if you get a chance to post one! :goodvibes

These are the books I made two years ago. We still use my DD's every time we go. But I did hers as a 5x7 and I carry it with a small clipboard - makes it easier for the characters to sign it. I also keep it in a large ziplock in my backpack to protect it from getting wet.
I triple hole punched on the sides (when I cut out the pages I left about 2" on the left side) and tied it all together with ribbon. This makes it easy to remove the pages AFTER the characters have signed them, so the book is not as heavy on subsequent trips...

To those who had your pages printed as pictures and then put them on cardstock- what type of adhesive to you did you use??
For that same group that have used them in the parks..did you have a problem with smeering??

I printed mine as photos last year (matte finish) and doing so again this year. We used a clickable sharpie and no problems with smearing.
Cannot answer the question about what adhesive to use, I just put them in alphabetical order in a photoalbum.

Matte finish on the pictures seems to be a better surface for sharpies, as long as you wait a few seconds to let it dry. You don't have to mount the photos onto cardstock - you can put them in a photo album or even bind them as they are. If you want to mount them onto cardstock, use something heavy-duty such as scrapbooking adhesive. Good luck! :goodvibes

Yes, if you want to get them bound rather than putting them in an album, the cardstock will make them sturdier. Just make sure to use heavy-duty glue or rubber cement so they don't come off, and leave a 1" margin at the top for the binding. :goodvibes

Okay I was just wondering if anyone who had access to a binding machine has tried to bind the book themself. I have access to a binding machine but it makes rectangular holes instead of round and i was wanting to use one the spiral coils which needs round holes. I guess my question is have you used rectangle holes with the coil does it look dumb or not noticeable.

Quick question out of curiousity - I noticed a few of you print them as pictures and mount them (is that to save on ink?). Have any of you ever had them done as a photobook, with the idea of using that as an autograph book? If so, does it work or is the glossy finish too hard to sign on? :confused3

You are very welcome! :thumbsup2 If you are using ball point pen, you will need to print your pictures on cardstock. The pen will come right off the pictures, even with a matte finish. If you want to do the photos, your best bet is to use a Sharpie.

Yes, many people have their images done as photos in order to save ink. You could certainly make them into photobooks. I have seen some beautiful examples of this on other boards. It makes a wonderful keepsake, but you would have to be prepared for having some blank pages in your book if you miss some of the characters. You can sign on the pages of this type of book with a Sharpie pen, as long as you give it a minute to dry after it has been signed. If you decide to make a photobook, I would love to see some pics of the finished product! :goodvibes

I used 5x7. It didn't work perfectly with the images from Donatalie, since those are cropped for 4x6, but I just moved them over so that the side opposite the character image gets its border cropped a bit. Thankfully her resolutions are so good that it still looks pretty good.

I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction.
I have had many of Natalie's autograph images printed to 4x6 pictures.
My plan is (was?) to get a 4x6 binder to insert 4x6 photo page holders into.
I was thinking that for every autograph I would have a picture of my daughter with that character as well. The idea is that when you open up the 4x6 binder horizontally (so it's really 6x4) to any page, the top half would have the picture of my daughter with the character, and the bottom half would be the autograph page with the characters autograph on it. Here's an example...kind of...
6"

l..............................l
--------------------------
<<<<<<<<<<<<<< spine of binder
--------------------------
l..............................l
l..............................l
l............Ariel............l Bottom picture of character autograph
l..............................l

I was also hoping that I could find a binder with a clear cover insert so that I could put in an autograph book cover picture.
My problem is that I was just doing a google search for about 30 minutes and I couldn't find any 4x6 binders nor 4x6 photo inserts (I've seen regular size binders and single photo insert pages divided into 3 4x6 parts).
Do they exist and if so, where can I find them?
Thanks for any help,
Evan

I think you would be better off looking at photo albums instead of binders. They are more likely to be the right size, and offer you the two 4x6 picture per page option. Any craft store, such as Hobby Lobby, Michaels, or Joann's, will carry an assortment of styles, many of which can be expanded with extra inserts. Some even have the window in the front so you could include a cover design. Good luck! :goodvibes

Thank you so much for this thread. I just finished up an autograph book today and it looks awesome. These instructions saved me much time and learning pains. We are making one big book with all of the characters that we will take with us on all trips in the goal of collecting as many as possible. As opposed to binding them i'm using rings that can open up so we can remove them as we get signatures to lighten the load.

Hi - just wondering if anyone out there can help. I've printed out a bunch of Donatalie's beautiful autograph pages thru snapfish. My problem is getting the covers to print clearly in 5x7 (as done in post #63). My printer is awful, so I wanted to do them on snapfish as well. I created a couple of my own, but the resolution is terrible. Any suggestions? Do you know of anyone who can personalize covers that would be clear when printed in 5x7?
Thanks!

01-27-2010, 01:33 PM
If there is a specific cover design that you would like to have personalized, try posting a request thread for it. Include the design and the name(s) you would like to be on it. Most of the designers here are pretty good about responding. If your printer is not up to the challenge, you can have them printed onto cardstock at FedEx/Kinkos. If you want them as pictures to match the ones from Snapfish, you could have them printed at Wal-mart or Walgreens. If you saved the original at its highest resolution, it should easily expand clearly to a 5x7. Good luck! :goodvibes

Hi Disigners...I have a quick question for you.
I am making my own autograph book this year. Two years ago my ex's mom made mine, and the year before my mom and I made very simple index-card-sized ones using some of the great papers here. But this year I had a different idea, and I want some input.
Have any of you ever used sticker paper to create the images/text for your book? I want something a little more three dimensional and am considering printing out the character image and name on sticker paper. Anyone ever tried this? Did it work out?
MusicMouse
01-28-2010, 07:32 AM
It should work just fine. I have printed several designs from here onto sticker paper for pressed penny tubes, mousekeeping envelopes, etc., and they all came out very well. Are you thinking of doing something that is more scrapbook-ish?

I've finally done mine :cool1::cool1::cool1:
Thanks to the amazing designers on here, I got some fabulous pages. I laminated the covers and cut them bigger than the pages. Then I had them spiral bound at staples.

I like the idea of using Shutterfly or something similar to make a photo flip book - but won't that come printed on glossy photo paper? I like the ease of doing it that way, but would really rather have the texture of card stock rather than photo paper. Makes for better signing (no smudges).
Feedback? :confused3

I had this problem when using another designer's images, since they were only meant to be printed 4x6. When I switched to donatalie's designs, they printed fine.
By the way, I received mine a few days ago and it looks great!

How many autograph pages should I make for 3 1/2 days? I am using the generic ones and don't want to make it too thick.

We just got back on Saturday from an awesome 8 days in the World!!!! I got sooooo many comments on my autograph books!! Several of the characters even said something about having their own page!! It was something to add a little more interaction to the meetings! We got about 50 autos in really on like 5 days becasue 3 of the days for some reason we literally got none. This does include 2 character meals.
As far as the blank pages in the books the kids want to keep them in for next time...we will see when next time rolls around we may just do new books....who knows! The only thing I think I would do differently is print out more of then in hopes of seeing them and if we didn't you could get rid of them...I like the ones on the printed pages so much that I really wish I had one for all of the ones we saw instead of some printed and some generic.....or maybe I would do all generic...I am a bit obsessive though so that might not bother others :)
We saw a TON of characters in DHS...in the Animation building...the CM told me they do it every non Fantasmic night around 4:30ish....they had one group out and then they would go in and another group would come out!! It was great!!!! Just in there we saw....Minnie, Pluto, Goffy, Sorcerer Mickey, Eeyore, Stitch, Mulan, Pochantas and Meeko, Mary Poppins and Mr. Penguin, Tweedle Dee and Dum, Mr. Incredible and Frozone, Aladdin and Jasmine....I think that was it...it was a bit overwhelming but it was really cool and hardly any lines!!!
Hope this helps those of you going soon!!! Have Fun!!!!

I would print 25 generic pages. It really depends on which parks you are going to visit, and how willing you are to stand in line to get the autographs. We saw a lot of characters, but often chose to ride or see an attraction rather than stand in a long line.

They are still really cute, even without the borders. If you are really heartbroken about the way they turned out, though, get them reprinted (try a couple for test purposes first). I wanted to make 5x7 books this year, but I can't find any card stock precut to 5x7. I am afraid that if I use the 8.5x11 and cut them out they will look terrible. how do you keep them square and all the edges straight so that when you stack them in the book the book edges are pretty straight??
MusicMouse
02-24-2010, 05:17 PM
Some people have used blank 5x7 notecards to print onto, but I just printed them out onto regular-sized card stock and cut them down to size with a ruled paper trimmer. You can buy them at any craft store in the scrabooking section. You can also use the paper trimmer available at your local Kinkos or Business Office Supply store. (BTW, if you make your cards 4x6, you can fit two per page.) :goodvibes

You can buy a paper-cutter with a blade that slides along a straight-edge. That way, you just have to line up the sides and slide the blade, and it cuts. Much easier than scissors!

I put the characters in alphabetical order in the main part of the book, then I put in a dozen generic pages, and finally I put the characters for our character meals in groups at the end. It seemed to work quite well, and we never had problems finding anyone in the book. :goodvibes

With the Disney autogrpah books, the chaacters are used to signing the fronts and backs of pages to conserve space. If you have your books spiral bound, they will lay flat and then you can hand them the book already open to the exact page you want them to sign. :goodvibes

We are taking our first trip to Disney on 3/8/10 (only a few days left) and I just received the autograph book that I made in the mail today.
I purchased it through Artscow.com I think the price was decent and it is well made BUT I would mention that you need to give yourself at least two months lead time. Artscow is in Hong Kong and it takes a long time.
I thought I would share some pictures from my book and if for some reason someone wants me to forward a link to the full book I can do so. I would need to send it to your email though an artscow link ...just send me your email address through a private message and I will forward it over to you.
The book we received is 60 pages and is 5X7 I left some pages with backgrounds only for me to insert some pictures of my daughter with the characters. I plan to do that with some photo corners.
BTW - Tried to have the pics show here and was having no luck. Links are here instead.

Ok - so we only have a lazer b/w printer at home. I assumed I'd go to my local Kinkos and print these off. They said that the cardstock wont fit into the printers you use yourself, so they have to do it for you. FINE. Its cheaper that way anyway (.59 cents vs. .99 cents.)
Then....they found out it was Disney stuff and they wont touch it. They wont print it at all for me.
Well, I dont have a color printer, and now I dont know what to do. I really didnt want to do the "pictures" from shutterfly, etc. because I wanted the carstock because I was going to do scrapbook pages with them whatever.

I have a couple of suggestions:
1) The 8x11 cardstock that you buy at Walmart or an office store should fit into any typical printer. Maybe you can find a friend or relative with a color printer that you can use? Also, another office suply store may be willing to print it for you. (My Kinkos had no problems printing Disney pages for my journal. :confused3)
2) Natalie has some black and white designs for autograph books here: http://s143.photobucket.com/albums/r132/donatalie/Black%20and%20White%20Autograph%20Book%20Cards/ These actually look really cool if you print them on multiple colors of cardstock.
3) Other folks on here have printed photographs and then glued them onto cardstock with scrapbooking adhesive and had them bound. You can also just slide them into a photo album to carry them around the parks, and then you can use them in a future scrapbook by using photo corners to put them in.
Good luck! :goodvibes

If there is a specific design that you want (from someone's photobucket), you can make a request on that designer's thread. If you just have a more general idea (ie. "My daughter loves Cinderella, or Mater, or Minnie"), you can post a new thread with a request on the main page. The designers are all really good about helping out! :goodvibes

I think I am going to keep them loose for the park and then bound them later..
If you keep them loose and then get them bound later how would you go about getting the characters to sign them at the park. My DBF and I are going in October this year and we are making an autograph book again and we are thinking about keeping it loose while we are there (using a coupon book to keep them in) and then getting them bound when we get back. However, I am unsure of how to go about this...or it even makes sense to do this?
Any suggestions? Comments? about doing this?

My DBF and I are going in October this year and we are making an autograph book again and we are thinking about keeping it loose while we are there (using a coupon book to keep them in) and then getting them bound when we get back. However, I am unsure of how to go about this...or it even makes sense to do this?
Any suggestions? Comments? about doing this?
A coupon book is a good idea for keeping them loose, or a photo album. If you put them in alphabetical order, they will be easier to find when you meet a character. Some folks have just hole-punched a hole in the upper left corner of their cards, put them on a ring to keep them together, and then had them bound when they get home. I actually had mine bound, did the trip, then took the binding spiral out, took out the unsigned cards, and then put the binding spiral wire back in. It wasn't hard to do, and that way the cards were all together while we were in the parks. :goodvibes

I took loose autograph cards last trip and plan to do it again. I had them in a creative memories photo holder. I would recommend some type of photo holder instead of a coupon one since they are specifically made to hold items 4x6 (if that's the size you are using) and it will keep the pages from getting bent. You can find them in the scrapbook section of most craft stores. They also usually have the accordian on the bottom for expansion so they will fit the cards in them better, most coupon holders fan out on the top only. Office supply stores will probably have something that works too. I had a TON of cards with me and organized them by who I would see each day. I only took the cards for the day and several blanks so Ididn't need to carry so much. If we started our day at Chef Mickey's then I had all those characters together and then later at Magic Kingdom I knew I would try to see the fairies & princessess so I had them too. I used mini clip boards that I kept in my backpack for the characters to write on. Another great tip is to use the retractable sharpies. Not only are they big enough for the characters to hold you don't need to fuss with loosing pen caps.

Thank you, Dedepots! It's always great to get reports of what works "in the field" for autograph book organization. And: :welcome: to the DISboards!!

I just picked up my book from Kinkos. I love it and just wanted to that all the disigners. I think I got most of the disigns from donatalie and the inside Bolt picture and Stitch backcover from Tebi73.
Kinkos messed it up a little but it still looks okay. I had glued the cover, a blank sheet, and inside of the cover together to make it a little thicker. I also did this with the back cover. I said I wanted the cover and back cover laminated. The girl at the register took it over to a girl in the back. I could see the girl in the back pulling apart the pages that were glued together. So, then I asked for it back and said they were supposed to be glued and got a few paperclips to hold the pages together to show what was the cover and what was the back cover to be laminated. What happens when I pick up the book? The pages are separated again! I brought it home and just superglued the pages that should have been the cover together. It looks fine but now the inside cover and back cover aren't covered. Oh well.
Here is the book:

Nice job! If you want to, you can still laminate the covers yourself using clear contact paper. It will give them some extra protection from wear and tear. :goodvibes

ok, so you directed me to this awesome thread from my own thread...here's the question again. I hope you can help. I want to print my autograph book and Epcot passports as photobooks, not individual cards but the actual books you can have printed from photo sites. Anyway...all the designs from fellow DISers are on photobucket... they don't show photobooks in their store so whats the fastest easiest way to get those images to a site like Walmart to have the photobooks made? Did that make sense? I hope so. :thumbsup2 And I will admit, I have read through about half of this thread so if this info is in a post somewhere just point me in the right direction! TIA:thumbsup2

The easiest way to get the images to a photo site is to:
1) Go to the photobucket with your design choices, click to enlarge the image, right-click on the image, choose "save photo as", and save all of the images you want to put into your book in a separate folder on your computer.
2) Once you have all of the images you want, upload them to the photo site of your choice (we have had great results reported from shutterfly, snapfish, and artscow).
3) Make your book. If you want one design per page, try a 4x6 or 5x7. If you do an 8x8, you can put more than one image per page, but you will need to download your images from someone who does 8x8 images (elizablake has some really nice 8x8 designs here: http://s758.photobucket.com/albums/xx224/elizablake_bucket/Autograph%20Book%208x8/).

Last year we took a quick trip to the world and so I didn't have time to make any books so we purchased the plain paper ones at the resort and the problem that we had was that the characters we signing on both sides of the book. So we had a character's name on the front and the back of the pages. I know that the characters are in a hurry to get to many people but i wish that they would slow down and all sign on the same side. I hope ya'll don't have that problem with ya'll cards. They look great.

Ok a few quick question
When you have the pages printed at (Snapfish, Wal-mart, ect) as a 4*6, do you paste them on cardstock thats a 5*7?
Also do you do one for each park? or for each character meal? Just wondering b/c I have ADR's for Storybook Princess and Cindy's Royal Table.

If you paste them onto cardstock, you should use 5x7 and paste them at the bottom of the card so that there is space at the top to be bound. Be sure to use something very strong as a glue, such as scrapbooking adhesive or rubber cement. If you don't want to mess with all of that, you can put them in a plain photo album that you can "Disney-fy" to make it personal. Some of these have turned out VERY cute, and then you can use the signed photo cards for scrapbooking or making a memory photo album later (signed card next to pic of you and the character).
My best suggestion is to put all of your regular cards in alphabetical order, and then put your character meal cards at the end, grouped by restaurant, so that they are easier to find. :goodvibes

Sorry, but there is no shortcut for this. Think of it as a labor of love... BTW, if you want a copy of the passport that is already in MS Word that you can print right onto cardstock (front and back) and then staple together, check out this thread: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1509917. It's a quick way to do them at home, and they really look like passports when you are finished.

I love love love these designs! I am having trouble, though... I went in Donatalie's Photobucket page and right clicked each image I wanted, did "save as," etc. When I upload this image to the photo site (I am trying to make them into a soft cover photo book) the images are not high enough resolution. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, I feel like an idiot!

Thanks so much for the directions and the links to all of the autograph pages! They are just awesome. We are planning our first trip, hopefully in November. I am thinking of making one of these books for each of our little girls. I do have a logistical question, however. :confused3
So, suppose that I print out all of the pages, but then we end up not seeing some of the characters... What is your recommendation for a "temporary" binding with all of the pages to take on the trip so the cards are held together, but then still having the ability to remove the pages that we didn't get signed when we returned home and make a more permanent binding when we get home? Does that make any sense?

I'm tickled pink that I discovered this thread. I've been mulling over the idea of making my girls an autograph book, but had just recently decided not to because I feel overwhelmed by the computer graphics portion of these creations. I'm good w/ your basics--MS word, Excel, Power Point, etc., but I feel making these projects requires a whole other level of computer expertise. After reading through this entire thread, I feel inspired again. I just hope when I don't attempt to make one of these projects I don't start feeling overwhelmed all over again. I have a few questions before I start to make sure I understand everything and to clear confusions.
What is the benefit of saving a picture from someone's photobucket into a picture file and then transferring it to MS word if I'm adding wording (text box)? Why can't I skip saving it to pictures and just save it directly to MS word? (I'm assuming the quality of the picture is compromised????)
In the past, we used the autograph books we bought at WDW that was like a 4 X 6 photo book. One page to slip a picture in later and on the opposite side the character signed. It only had around 12 different character spots though (24 pages total); not near enough room for all the characters you encounter,so mid trip we bought a second one--added expense. Then we ended up buying just a simple autograph book that didn't have a spot for pictures; it just had plain white pages for autographs just because it was more cost friendly but would ensure she could get all characters' autographs. She doesn't ever look at it, though. (I'm sure it has something to do w/ just the plain white pages and just a signature. Also, when she was little and couldn't read, it was hard for her to know who was who).
I like the idea of making my own now so that I'm not buying multiple books, and it would be cuter than plain white pages. Should I just print off the pages from Donatalie's site that has a picture of the character for the page to be signed, or should I do a 4X 6 book that would have a page for a photo of my daughters w/the character for me to add later and a spot for the autograph? I'm afraid it would end up being waaaaay to long if I held a spot for a photograph to accompany every character which would add expense and make it too bulky. Could I leave 2 spots (one for signature & one for photo) for my girls' favorite characters only?
Last question: do you find it cheaper to print the character signature pages off as pictures at Wal-Mart and then binding the book or putting into a 4X6 photo album, or is it cheaper to create into books on a photo site such as artscow? (Does Wal-Mart do these as well; anyone like theirs?)
Sorry for asking so many questions!!!!!! I've learned a lot by reading this thread and am inspired. Hoping w/ a little direction from you guys on the questions I asked that I can figure all of this out. THANKS!

You have a couple of options. You can leave your cards unbound, slip them into a photo album to carry around the parks, and then bind the ones with autographs when you get home. You can also just have them spiral bound at Kinkos, get all of your autographs, and then take out the blanks when you get home. This is what I did, and it was fairly easy to take out the spiral wire, remove the blanks, and then put the spiral wire back in. :goodvibes

Why can't I skip saving it to pictures and just save it directly to MS word? (I'm assuming the quality of the picture is compromised????) Yes, when you don't save it as a picture, the quality is degraded.

Could I leave 2 spots (one for signature & one for photo) for my girls' favorite characters only? I would print out the characters as 4x6 cards for a small book. If, after your trip, you want to put each card with a picture, you can buy a scrapbook or photo album that is big enough to hold one card and one picture on each page (or two cards and 2 pictures if you want a larger finished product). You can also do this as a digital photobook after your trip if you want to scan your autographed cards into your computer and then upload the card images and photos to someplace like shutterfly or artscow.
Last question: do you find it cheaper to print the character signature pages off as pictures at Wal-Mart and then binding the book or putting into a 4X6 photo album, or is it cheaper to create into books on a photo site such as artscow? (Does Wal-Mart do these as well; anyone like theirs?) I know that you can make digital photobooks at Walmart, but I can't vouch for the quality. I have only had books done at Shutterfly. Most of these photobook places have places to sign up with your e-mail to receive discount offers, which helps defray the cost significantly. You will have to run the numbers yourself, since it will really depend on how many images you want to include. Remember to factor in the value of your time and the cost of binding (about $9 at Kinkos). I printed mine onto cardstock with my own printer, so that I only had to pay for cardstock and however much toner I used.

It's always great to see autograph books are are nicer and now sold in the park, characters I know a few of my good friends like Pluto and Eeyore pay more attention to them and will do the whole autograph more then just the name (some have drawing or things that go with the name that are optional)

Well, after much thought and deliberation, I have decided to make my own autograph book rather than going through Artscow or someother site. Our printer was really old so it wasn't as efficient and cost friendly for ink as newer versions. To offset some of the ink cost so my husband wouldn't have a heart attack over all my printing, we got a new printer. Yea! This printer will print front and back w/out someone having to manually flip the pages. (At least that's what my husband thinks it will do---just hooked it up tonight; we'll see.) Has anyone tried to print the autograph book at home front and back? On cardstock it shouldn't bleed through to the other side. I want to use cardstock for the durability, but it's thicker so I'd like to figure out how to do it front and back to decrease bulk. Has anyone figured out how to do this? Thanks!

I did Natlie's PassPort front to back. The hardest part was lining them up so when I cut out one the other lined up. However you shouldn't have that problem. I had no problem with bleeding.
I also did it with one of the Passport (actually I combined 2 of Natalie's passporters) and had no problem. With one I used my old HP 720 and with the other I used my new PhotoSmart C6380 (it drinks ink :lmao:). My HP is soooo much better with ink, but the PhotoSmart colors are more vibrant. :goodvibes

I know that it can be done on cardstock (no bleeding through), and it is a good idea for cutting down on the bulkiness of an autograph book. Since all printers are different, you will probably have to use the trial and error method a couple of times to get everything lined up just right. Be sure that you set up your cards so that the fronts and backs stay in alphabetical order to help you find the characters in a hurry. :goodvibes

I checked with the Themes and Attractions board, and since the Quartermaster's desk is just outside the Pirate League and not actually IN the Pirate League, anyone should be able to go get a picture and an autograph with him. Now we just have to practice saying "Aargh"! ;) :goodvibes

My wife and I just purchased a CANON IP2600, and I am trying to figure out how to print on both sides, well I should say I am reading up on it, but I think we'll go to Walmart or Kinko to try to print ours out and bind them so we'll have to make 3 books. For our 2 DD's and 1 for ourselves. Chaoscent, enjoyed your Photobucket very much, if it wasn't for you and MusicMouse, we would not have had the nice photos we have now. Great Job. Thanks :dance3::thumbsup2.

Thanks to Penny and MusicMouse for your replies about printing the autograph books front & back. I know it will end up being trial and error. Just hope it's not too much of the latter (error) so that I don't eat all of my ink just in trials. I really like the idea of combining though to decrease bulk. Since I know others have tried and it's worked, we'll give it a whirl.
I'm also planning on using the front/back method for a passport. Penny, you're a pro, so if it was tricky for you to line it up (or at least seeing that was the hardest part), I can only imagine the frustration I will encounter on that project. There's so much to take into account: lining margins up, making sure images flip correctly from one side to next, etc. I may be in over my head. :)

DisneyBliss2, if you find too hard like I did, well somewhat hard and too complicated, what I did was save all the pictures to a file, downloaded them onto a disc for my digital camera and now I will just take it to Walmart or Kinkos, which they both can print up your pictures and attached the spiral and make it an autograph book, Walmart is way cheaper though and I am making 3 autograph books, with about 230 photos, from MusicMouse and Chaos1Cent. But if you want to the crafting yourself, then I applaud you :cheer2:, the way everyone else did it. Guess I'm not too computer literate :confused3and I guess I am cheap too, just can't see wasting the ink for 230 photos. Enjoy and have a Magical Day. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Sorry, but there is no shortcut for this. Think of it as a labor of love...
I totally agree, and it is sooo worth it. I made an autograph book last year for my daughter who was 4 years old and she was thrilled. As we came upon the characters, she would shout, "I need my autograph book"
The charaters also admired the unique book. It took me a while to complete. I would work on it a little bit at a time in the evenings after work. We are going again in the fall, and have already bought the supplies and I will start working on it during rainy days.

I did my own last year. Here's my link to how I solved that problem.

Looking for your opinion on my autograph book idea. I bought a faux leather daytimer that has a photo cover and is 5X7. I like it because it is a 3 ring binder and has slots for cards and zippered compartments, dividers and a notepad. This is our first trip to Disney World and I read that it is useful to have a place to store meal cards, fast passes, room keys etc. so thought this would work and it is sturdy enough for the characters to write on. I plan to print some of the Disigners autograph cards on card stock (there are so many good ones to choose from :).
I don't think I have read that anyone else has done this so maybe there is a reason not too that I have not thought of. I was at Michaels and one of the employees thought that they would work great and would be better to carry around then a scrapbook album or cardstock books since it is a more durable binder that is meant to be carried around. I also like the flexibility that I can move and remove pages that we do not find autographs for since it is a 3 ring binder. Let me know what you think and if there is any downfalls with this idea. The only downfall I can think of is the daytimer is a vertical orientation and the templates are all horizontal but I am not too worried about that.
Just curious if there any tabs/divider sheets that have been created? Looking to separate the character meals and star wars weekend in the album from the rest of the characters.
Thanks for letting me "think out loud". I think my DH thinks I'm crazy for all the research I have been doing to get ready for our trip - lol

I guess the only downside to this that I can think of is that it might not hold enough autograph cards. If you are going to WDW for a week, plan on getting around 60-65 autographs (it seems to be about the average). Other than that - go for it! If you decide that this is the way you want to go, be sure to let us all know how it works out in the parks when you come back. You guys have great ideas! I saved some of the pictures and tried to print them and they are fuzzy. I know someone else had this problem too. If I send them to my walgreens account to be printed, will they still be fuzzy or will they turn out clear? I was going to make all of my pages myself with the cricut machine, but think this would be much easier! Thanks for any help! We leave in 39 days for a mother/son trip and I am trying to finish up all of my stuff! These pictures really help!

Did you click on the image to make it full-sized before you saved it? Most people who have this problem inadvertently saved the thumbnail picture and not the full-sized picture. If your images are fuzzy, they will print that way at Walgreens. Try re-saving the full-sized images and see if that makes it better. :goodvibes

I noticed people are using the term card stock to print on.
I figured you shouldn't print on photopaper. Will I easily be able to find cardstock? Is it in a certain sectin at a store etc.
I am sure this is one of those stupid questions.

I downloaded the pictures from donatalie's photobucket site and I inserted them into word and when I click on the picture I noticed that there was box around picture that was sticking about an inch above the top and 1/4 on the sides. Do I need to crop the pictures before I resize them? When I resize them the picture is actually smaller than 4 x 6. Any help would be greatly appriceated. We are leaving next week for Disney and of course I waited to the last minute to work on this.

Don't worry, card stock is very easy to find. You can find it in the office supply section of just about any store (Walmart, Target, etc.) or at any office supply store (Staples, Office Depot, Office Max). Card stock is usually sold by weight. 65 lb card stock is thick enough, although you can get heavier weights if you want something even thicker. :goodvibes

:welcome: to the Disboards! Natalie may have adjusted some her pictures to include the white borders that you need for binding. 1" on the top and 1/4" on the sides would be about right. When the pictures themselves are 4x6, you still need to add enough white border on the top and sides when you cut them out for binding. I think if you make your box 5x7 (with the white borders), you will find that the pictures themselves are 4x6. You will still be able to get two images per page in MS Word if you eliminate the top and bottom margins. :goodvibes

If you want to use card stock, you will have to print them at home. When people talk about printing the image at Walmart or Shutterfly, they are talking about printing 4x6 photos. Either way works well for autographs, it's just a matter of personal preference. :goodvibes

Ok I've made my own autograph book before with the cover and stuff but didn't customize pages. Done this a few times. This time we are taking my kids (first ON site trip for them and first full week) and I want to make them autograph books. How do you decide which charecters to put in your books? I follow Theme Park Attractions and Strategies & a few CM charecter info pages so pretty much know which charecters are out when but do you just put everybody in your book? and what if you put someone in there and don't find them?
I in the past have scrapbooked all my autographs from each trip but thats alot of time that I just don't have anymore, I am light years behind in scrappin, so I thought this might be easier. Do you all just leave the autographs in the books as a souvenier or what do you do with them when you get home?

If you are looking for a list of characters, check post #13. It's a list of who is currently in the parks and their likelyhood of being seen. I just updated it this week. There are really two options for choosing characters for your books. 1) Put them all in (with a few generic pages for anyone you may have forgotten) and then take out the ones you didn't see when you get home. 2) Put the major characters in (say, the top 25 or the characters on the "Abundant" and "Common Characters" in post 13), and then add several generic pages at the end for everyone else. Be sure to include characters from any character meals you are planning to attend.
Some people just keep their autograph pages in the book as a souvenir. Some take the books apart and use them for scrapbooking or adding into their photo albums (Minnie's autograph next to a picture of you and Minnie). Some have even scanned them into their computers for including in digital photobooks or digital scrapbooking. I left mine as a book, and the boys and I like to look at them every once in a while. :goodvibes

Now you all are going to be responsible for matching t shirts nearly daily (no worries, I'm sealing your identity from my husband, :rotfl: ) and no less than 1 passport and 3 autograph books for each child. They are going to just have a cow, they love Star Wars and my 4 yr old just told me a few weeks ago that it was his dream to meet the 'red vader' (Darth Sith) and he wished he was at Disney like the black one is, it took everything I had to zip it and not spill the beans.

I can answer that one, the new charecter for TS3 will be Lotso and he will be taking up residence in the Animation Studio where the UP! charecters currently are. There is a pretty strong rumor (mostly confirmed) that the UP! guys will be moved to AK for greetings b/c of thier popularity, the location is still up in the air but is leaning toward the front gate area of AK for them.
I'm a theme parks and strategies gal and we have a few charecter CM's over there that keep us up to date and have some great charecter finder sites, the current changes will be taking place on May 9th.

I know this thread is for autograph books, but I am hoping someone on here can point me in the direction or actually has the epcot passport document for word.
Thanks
heather
I just sent it out, Heather! :goodvibes

Just curouis what kind of paper did you have them printed out on so you can autograph them??
Most people seem to prefer matte finish for their photo autograph cards, because it looks a little nicer (not too shiny). Glossy works with the Sharpies too, though, if you aren't given a choice. :goodvibes

Yep! Choose the designs you like, print them out, cut them down to size and take them in to be bound. Be sure to keep in mind that 1 1/2" is about the maximum thickness that they can spiral bind. :goodvibes

AHhh! I need help. I must be doing this totally wrong. I am following the directions in post #1. I found designs on Natalies's page and clicked on it then I save picture as and it went into my picture file on the computer. Now when I go into word. I try to paste the image and it just shows the file folder with the jpg under it, not actually the picture. Can anyone help!! Please
Heather

Open the picture file, right-click on the picture thumbnail, choose "copy", and then paste it into your Word document. Did that work? :goodvibes

no, that is what I did. Maybe I saved it wrong. :(
I didn't change the margins could that be the problem. I am not sure how to do that.
