View Full Version : Gettysburg GG

There was talk at WDW last week about a possible GG at Gettysburg next spring. In the interest of keeping the momentum going, I am starting to gather information to try to organize this. So to start, I need to know when people would be interested in doing this and for how long - a weekend, a week, what? Pennsylvania winters can be somewhat unpredictable, so I would think May at the earliest. It looks like most campgrounds have discounted rates until Memorial Day weekend. So post your times you might be interested and let the planning begin!

An excellent idea. We talked about it last year, but never got to the finish line.
We'd love it, but the kids won't be out of school until the end of May. With 4 days driving, we'd need more than a weekend to pull it off. I know it's more expensive in June, but I think that would be the earliest we could do it, unless you're talking Spring Break. But, like you said, that's a bit too early.
I'll wait and let some other voices chime in.

This is what I'm trying to find out, Rob. I have no problems with the summer. Gettysburg is only about a 2 hour drive for me, so even if people want to come for a longer stay and I can only do a couple days it's no big deal for me. The price difference really isn't that significant - maybe 10 bucks or so a day. I am looking into the Drummer Boy campground as a possible location. If anybody has any problems with this one, let me know. Summer time would probably be better for kids who would like to swim - they have 2 pools, one with a slide.
http://www.drummerboycampresort.com/index.php?pr=Home
I don't want to promise anything I can't deliver on, but I also have a friend who is a licensed guide for the battlefield and I may be able to swing some special rate or something there. He only does it part time, so it may not be a happening thing, but as time goes on if this looks like it's going to happen, I can check with him.

Me & the DW, just after getting home from Fort, were thinking about going to Gettysburg in November, but we put the 5'r to bed. June s/b ok in PA.
We are about 6o miles away.
Formally from Philly, we have been to Valley Forge numerous times. I hate to admit it, but last year was our 1st time at Gettysburg.
Gettysburg is a must do----I did my homework about Gettysburg on-line and we did a self tour of the battlefields.
My reaction was similar to standing in front of the White House for the first time. THIS IS A GREAT COUNTRY----Don't let it slip by.
There is a super web site out there, about those 3 days in July at Gettysburg. If I can find it, I will put the link on the board. A must read before going to Gettysburg.

A great Gettysburg website.
Click on http://www.nps.gov/gett/index.htm
This the home page. If you want to indulge in a few hours of history, on the home page, click on (upper left corner) HISTORY AND CULTURE.
When the page comes up scroll down and click on VIRTUAL TOUR OF GETTYSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK. You will get the page THE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG. A lot of mini links are in these historic passages.
This is where I did my homework to walk in the footsteps of these brave men and women.

Would a more central location be Williamsburg, VA, or maybe even Pigeon Forge, TN. :confused3 This would be a little closer for the southern Dis'ers who would like to participate. June is a great time for us. It's a slow time business-wise for both Rick & me. I will definitely discuss this with him when he gets home & see how he feels about it. We visited Gettysburg in July 1999, and it was over 100 degrees the day we were there, so we toured most of it by car & didn't walk around much. I would love to go back.

Sounds like 2 GG's are in order. One in Pigeon Forge, one in Gettysburg. :thumbsup2
May would be a good time for PF, not too hot yet. And if some folk can make them both it would leave June open for them.
One suggestion for PF tho, the weekends are crazy there, especially traffic. During the week would be alot less busy and alot more fun.

Did Gettysburg last June (at the KOA) and weather was fantastic. We were planning on Richmond area this June, but could probably get a few days at Gettysburg. As long as I'm on my annual summertime-Civil-War-sightseeing-and-camping tour it's all good.

We just redid Gettysburg (only about 90 min from us) this May after probably 15 years+ and really enjoyed it and we added in the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Pa. on our way to Maine (really well worth it from the articles donated by the relatives of some of the more historic Civil War figures) and hit Valley Forge on the way home and I highly recommend all of these. Also, take the extra time at Gettysburg and visit the Eisenhower Farm/Home next to Gettysburg. If you do this take the time to visit the barns on the Eisenhower Farm where a lot of his cattle ribbons and history are posted/displayed. Also, take the time to look at all the buildings since his golf cart he used to take dignitaries around and some of the other stuff is not readily visible unless you walk up to the building and look around it.
I also highly recommend the CD self guided tour things you can purchase for both Gettysburg and Valley Forge.

Wasn't there talk about Williamsburg, so that it would be kind of half way for the northerners and half way for the southerners?
Gettysburg is fine with me, either way. Williamsburg and Gettysburg are both places we have wanted to visit. And are both pretty much the same distance for us. End of June is best for us since the kids don't get out of school until June 19, if we don't have too many snow days. We always take off on a trip that day so just point me in the direction I'm heading and the Pecoys will be there!
Pigeon Forge sounds fun too! If we space the GG's out enough, maybe we can hit both. Or if they are close enough, we can leave one and go to the other. Oh the possibilities! OK, enough coffee for me

Hey, folks, I started the ball rolling on Gettysburg because it was mentioned to me at Epcot and it's close so would be fairly easy for me to work into my schedule. So, I started the Gettysburg GG thread, not the Pigeon Forge thread, not the Williamsburg thread. So I am driving on with planning a trip to Gettysburg in June most likely at Drummerboy. If it works out, great. The new camper is in the driveway set up for driveway camping to check for bugs. I plan on an early spring trip to the Delaware Water Gap for the shakedown cruise, then Gettysburg in June. I will be posting more as things progress.

Hi Jim :wave2: I'm good with Gettysburg...my husband has always wanted to to visit there.:thumbsup2 (and I saw some good outlet shopping when I was in that area a number of years ago..so I'm on board!:)) However, a question or two if you don't mind. I see the last weekend in June has been mentioned a couple of times. Is this a weekend, or a week long type of trip. :confused3 I only ask because June is tough for me..given my son is graduating the last Sunday of the month..but if folks are gonna be there for an entire week..then it's no big deal..we'll just join in on Monday the 28th. If it's a week long celebration..I would point out that the week of June 27th does bring us into to the Fourth of July weekend. Meaning that weekend traffic will be horrible..at least we're headed back to NY.:scared: Also don't know if the Gettysburg area itself will be pretty crowded.
The week of June 19th might be better suited as far as towing and traveling..but it's also Father's Day weekend. Some may have obligations closer to home that weekend. I know for us..again, we have my son's birthday as well, but if if folks plan to be there for the entire week..we would plan on joining you all on the 22nd.
Okay..that's my two cents...and yes, I know what that's worth.

You got it right---Rt 61. We live about 25 miles due west from there. Cabellas is right above Schaeffer's. We have a Bass Pro Shop (Harrisburg) about 20 + miles west of us. I used to deal with Bass Pro when it was mail order, I believe in MO. I have been to the one in Harrisburg once. Awesome.

Just a heads up- I am on the Drummer Boy mailing list and they just sent me an e-mail this morning about a Black Friday special. Call 1-800-293-2808 between 8 AM to 11 AM on Friday and you will receive a 15% bonus for any gift certificate over $50. So I assume that means if you buy a gift certificate for $50 your actual amount will be $57.50. The gift certificate is good for camping, cabin rentals, golf cart rentals, store purchases, snack bar purchases, tours, and mini golf. This could be especially helpful to people renting cabins.
BTW, my family and I want to attend even though we don't visit the camping boards often. We also own the DVC so I spend alot of times on those boards. But I still love the camping peeps.

Just joining in the thread, thinking we might be able to join this GG (if you will still have us?).
We had been talking about a big trip back to the Yellowstone/Teton area to celebrate our oldest's graduation; but it looks like plans are changing and he is not interested. Oh well, gave me a year or so of planning/dreaming, now I can change gears and start focusing on new plans for next summer.
Drummer Boy CG looks great, and I've always wanted to see more of the area. We have also wanted to hit the Knoebel's park or some other classic amusement park while in the area. Seems to me that Elysburg is not that far away from Gettysburg and we could do both?
I'm with Seabee on the timing of the event, our kids last day of school is kind of up in the air due to snow days. Lots of upset parents last year because the central part of the state got hit so hard by one storm that all the schools were being used as emergency shelters for weeks. They asked for a waiver on the 180 days of school issue because this ER use of the schools was beyond their ability to change - no deal, had to go late. Then schools in Boston area got hit with the swine flu in spring, closed for a week or two and they got a waiver. Most parents in our district took the kids out for the last week or two in protest (and to save their vacation deposits).

Late to this thread, but I would love to join the Fort Fiends at Gettysburg (my second home)! I'm at work and don't have time to go through all the pages now - has a date been set for this?
Gettysburg is less than 4 hours away for me. My husband and I have been involved with civil war reenacting/living history events and Gettysburg is kind of like our "mecca". I will never be able to convince my husband to try camping at Disney, but we have camped countless times at Gettysburg (including civil war style)!
Definately, count me in! I already have several trips there planned for this summer - what's one more!
juligrl
01-13-2010, 11:07 AM
I don't know how the state parks campsites work out for those of you with big rigs, but Caledonia State Park is also nearby, cheap, and they have a swimming pool. I've camped there a lot!
Also, my sister is starting as a law enforcement ranger at Gettysburg NMP in February and should be able to reccommend a good interp ranger or battlefield guide to do a tour (or I could just fess up to being a Gettysburg junkie who has listened to practically all of the rangers and guides over the years and suggest a few myself).
If you need any help with planning this let me know - I'm already putting together a trip for a bunch of our family friends who are taking the opportunity to visit now that they will know somebody who works there.

Believe me, this has sparked more than one argument around here. DW is convinced that they have to do camp in June, because it's hotter in July. Well, they will still have to live through July weather at home, with the same temps as at camp. Go figure, but Momma has spoken.
The best I can do for G-burg is mid-July, unless I came alone. As it is I may be without DW. She may not be able to do it any time, since she is starting a new job at a just-opened hospital. I have a feeling that vacations will be few and far between for the staff, and we have managed to get a week to hit The World in April-May. I just want to be able to bring the kids rather than be by myself.

Sheesh, I feel like I'm having coffee with my Dad. He still hasn't let me live down buying a Toyota. He almost disowned me when I bought the second one. While I am happy with the truck I have, there was this really, really slick Chevy 2500 crew cab with the D/A combination that I drooled over for about an hour. They only wanted $27k for that truck, but the price of diesel was over $4.50 per gallon at the time and it was not a 4WD. I think it only had around 65,000 miles on it as well.

If Momma ain't happy, nobody's happy. But, maybe you could secretly sign the kids up for camp in July (let's face it, we all survived the summer months as kids playing baseball, going fishing and just plain old being kids), get Momma good and drunk, load 'em all up in the RV and head on out for the GG in Gettysburg and she would probably forgive you some day.
If not, well, then you've given her an easy target for frequent venting and unloading pent up aggression your way. Kind of a public service sort of thing, taking the pressure of her everyday mission to find something to be mad about and take away the guilt she might feel for only being able to get mad over a little thing. Nancy appreciates my efforts in this area, providing periodic good reasons for her to be livid. :rolleyes1
Well, take this free advice for what it's worth, and your mileage may vary.

The plant where they build the crew cab GM trucks is about 12 miles from my house, I have family that worked there and I grew up just outside of Pontiac where they used to make a LOT of vehicles. I understand why folks buy Toyota's, I have a few friends with them, but I just cant help but think I am hurting my neighbors by not buying GM (I have owned over 20 vehicles and besides one Pontiac and an Oldsmobile I have never owned anything but Chevys) thats just who I am. Looking like we will be local this June. I was looking forward to a GG, but Justin's doctor moved up his June appointment to the end of this month, suspect something is up. We'll have to wait and see, but not likely to put a deposit on something that far out right now.

Some assemblage of my family will be there - might just be me and the kids might be with my husband too. We need a camping trip and we need a Gettysburg trip, so may as well combine the two and meet some DISers while we're there. That answers one question. Anybody else wanna chime in?

Hug the little guy for us Dan. And yes, I hope there will be others. I get to meet several fellow DIS'ers this year, but I look forward to camping with a whole lot more someday. :thumbsup2

Can you post those dates again please. We are thinking about it. It's only a few hours from the Jersey Shore.
I know we are going to try Frontier town in MD and going to try to get up to Lake George NY.
Still trying to convince the wife to get out to Pa again. She wants to go someplace further north. We've been to Knoebels the past few years.

I made my reservation yesterday - we'll be tenting at site #95 June 18-20. Stop by and say "hello" if you'll be there!
Who else is going?
I'm not sure what our plans for the weekend are - we'll probably spend the day on Saturday touring the battlefield. I do know that our plans will definately involve a stop in town at Kilwin's for ice cream!

May be in trouble for the GG. Wife lost her job today. Good thing is they put in writing why and it all is linked to her medical trouble as per MRI thread. But by the time we win the case it will be past the GG. :sad1: HR person is dumb as a sack of hammers. We will know for sure in the next week or two.

Sorry to hear about this, but hope it all works out for you. Nothing worse than that notice to spoil some dreams. The stress around offices and workplaces during this bad economy is almost enough to be sliced with a knife.

For anybody headed to the Gettysburg GG, if you're looking for a place to eat out this place, The Appalachian Brewing Company (http://www.abcbrew.com/gettysburg/index.htm), has been getting some nice reviews. My sister and brother-in-law just ate there the other night and said it was pretty good. We're thinking about taking my husband there for a pre-fathers day lunch or dinner on Saturday.
We're counting down to our camping weekend! Two more weeks!

Had to cx our ressies at Drummer boy before the refund policy or non refund policy that is could have made us loose our money. My wife was accepted for unemployment the Monday before the GG. We called but were told that there werent any sites that our trailer would fit into available. We stayed at Artillery Ridge Campground. It was awesome and the staff were awesome too. If anyone remembers our Oct GPS adventures:eek: let me just say we had another one.:confused3 In fact upon arrival to Gettysburg the GPS told me to turn right, right through the NATIONAL CEMETARY with LOCKED GATES. The campgound was on the other side, without a connecting road that is. I will post more about the trip in the next couple days. We were there from Friday to Monday then went to Niagra Falls. Orbs by the kids in some pics but not others . Pics taken at the same campfire one after the other. Ashes were clearly ashes from the fire amd not mistaken for orbs. Tried to go to Drummerboy to look for Green Ears but were told we couldnt drive though for security reasons. Not happy about it but understand it.

A little surprised to hear that you couldn't get through - from our observation there was no security. Okay, not really  but my not-really-in-love-with-camping husband pointed it out in an attempt to find things to hate about our camping trip. He couldn't find much to complain about though. The weather was absolutely perfect! We couldn't have asked for a better weekend!
Anyhow, we did make it out to Gettysburg and thoroughly immersed ourselves in Civil War for the weekend and stayed in a nice campground with an awesome pool! :thumbsup2 Check out my pictures and review below.
So how was Artillery Ridge? That was next on my list for Gettysburg campgrounds, but the pool at Drummer Boy is gonna be hard to beat in my kid's minds. :rotfl:

Pros: Nicely sized, treed sites; Large campground with golf cart rentals available; Air conditioned, modern restrooms; Fishing pond and no license required!; Pets allowed (Pebbles, the camping dog, didn't come though); Beautiful main pool - really!!!
Cons: Right next to Rt. 15 so it's a little loud - you probably won't be lulled to sleep by the sounds of crackling campfires or a chorus of crickets.
I would absolutely stay there again!

The only good thing about the pool was it was wet. Kinda small and NOOO horseplay. Campground itself was very quite and peacefull. Stocked lake was literally 10 feet behind our trailer. 4 yr old son got to do his first fishing with good results. PICS TO FOLLOW AT A LATER DATE FOR FRANK. Many bluegill and large red ears. A 2-3 lb bass, all on hot dogs. Oh, and a small snapping turtle who wouldnt take no for an answer. Never made it to the bathrooms but the laundry was nice with 4 washers and dryers, the office had anything you could want and there were horses all around. Many pets were seen there also. Talked with many of the "regulars" who come in a couple times a year that said they used to stay at Drummer boy but when it went corporate they stopped going. I wouldnt know the dif. so it would probably have been fine to us.No golf carts availabe to rent and anyone bringing one in has to have proof of insurance. The were very happy to tell us that no one under 18 could drive a cart there. I must admit that I never saw any kids driving carts. All in all a good place to camp. About a half mile from the visitors center for the battlfield.
