The odd and sad thing is, if we met him in person and had a face-to-face conversation with him, we might find that he could be an okay person.
I had an all-day workshop today on "community building". Learned that we need to talk to people who we disagree with, who with think are our enemies. People are like faceted jewels. There is a least one facet where we can match up and find common ground, even if we don't agree with other facets of the person.
Seems a shame that here in the DIS community we were not able to find that facet.
Let's continue to be the kind and sharing and friendly community we know we are. :flower3:

One of the hardest things in the world to do is not feed the trolls.
I have learned on my local newspaper and tv sites that when I come to the end of the story, STOP READING! There are people out there who, when given a computer screen to work from, turn into monsters. I was reading a perfectly lovely article in the NY Times the other day about the White House garden, and one of the comments at the end caught my eye. It was perfectly awful! I actually punched the off button on the computer to keep myself from turning the afterburners on and flaming away.
I don't know what the the moderators prefer for us to hit the report button when we see a troll coming out from under the bridge, or to just ignore the thread and let it die?
There have been so many times I've wanted to post, but I figure that keeping the thread alive is like feeding the troll and keeping it's behavior alive. I mostly lurk here, but I love reading the boards. It's a wonderful escape, and there's so much laughter. I love 'em!
Kevin - whatever your next restaurant review is, I hope you hit the jackpot. You deserve a lovely meal for all the crap you've dealt with!

This is EXACTLY what I'm attempting to maintain
Everyone is offered the same chance to be part of this kind, friendly and sharing community.
With that chance comes the responsibility to also be kind, friendly and sharing.
Thanks for giving me a chance to say that.

I do agree though with mainegal, as I think people do some crazy things on the Internet they might not do in 'real life'. The consequences are just not the same. It's like any attention is good as long as it's attention.

Sadly, I've found from experience that you can't reason with someone who resorts to using aliases for the sole purpose of causing trouble, Sharon. I've lost any shred of respect now that he's resorted to doing that.

Hi Scottie...
I'd like to take credit for coming up with this...but Justin Jett (Skip) posted this the other day and I cant come up with any better answer.
Troll (Internet)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
See "What is a troll?".
In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion
Hope that helps.

It all comes from trolling in the fishing context more than the troll under the bridge. Troll's drag bait through a thread hoping for a someone to bite.

Spanx rules. I want to buy stock in them. Many of you know that I have lost a significant amount of weight (119 lbs.). Well, when you lose a lot of weight your skin does not always snap back like it should. Sometimes I look in the mirror and feel like a lemon meringue pie. This has been a life savior for certain outfits. Yes, TMI for some, but not for others. :)

I guess I just don't get it.
What would attract trolls to 'the Dis' ?
Goodness knows there are no shortage of controversial, opinionated, mean-spirited message boards out there, I'm sure they offer 'troll food' aplenty.
But, to my way of thinking there's so little to really disagree with or get upset over on these boards. I'm hard-pressed to think of a nicer group of people than the DIS 'regulars'. What would possess someone to get so PO'd on these boards ?
Ahh, well. Aninimity brings out the worst in some people, I suppose. :confused3

The sad thing about wdwoner is that he wasn't a dumb guy by any means. I read most of his threads and sometimes he would actually make some decent points, it just seemed he got a little meaner/angrier over time.
I remember he posted in a thread not too long ago that his father had suffered a stroke and was in the hospital, so maybe he is going through a rough time.

I have tried very hard to find some common ground.
It seems that's impossible.
When it was announced that his Dad was ill, people were supportive and caring. I personally sent him my prayers and wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
This was met with more vitriol and venom and the use of aliases.
I wish him the best.
