First let me start by saying I don't want to 'flame' or alienate anyone.

I just thought I would start a thread to remind people that the community is here for good reasons! I want to put out to new visitors that you will be welcomed into the DIS with open arms (careful I'm pretty sure some people around here know what to do with those arms , I visited the chat for the first time the other night and there were some ruder-ies (my word) being disscused :rotfl:).

<-- I dont post often, but I do visit daily and I have had a lot of members add me as their friend on Facebook, even though I'm not prominent in the community :grouphug:. Which is really nice, it's always nice to get a friend request ;) :lmao:

There was a time when the boards got 'plugged' on the Podcast. Pete and especially Kevin would say how welcoming everyone was, and just to join in and enjoy the chat/banter. That hasn't been said recently and although the main body have people haven't changed or the community spirit (I might he stepping out of line, but I think Kelvis explained it the best) there has really been some trolling going on lately.

I just wanted to make a point so if there was anyone 'lurking' popcorn:: out there they would know they can jump in at anytime:thumbsup2 and just have fun.

I hope this makes sense to everyone (it did to me anyway :confused3)

I would also like to say:

I :lovestruc the DISboards
I :lovestruc EVERYTHING the team does for US
I :lovestruc the idea of project X/eTicket
I :lovestruc my DISunplugged hoodie that came the other day :cool1:

and that I am thankful for all the hard work they put in to give me my Disney fix once a week.

I am however  about the fact that we leave the world the day before DAP :sad2:, but thats how it goes :thumbsup2.

Thanks for the positive post. I am not a newbie, I mostly hang on the creative DISigns thread and just started coming here as I just started listening to podcasts. I was thinking maybe this wasn't the forum for me? There are things about Disney I don't like, there are restaurants I won't go to because I agree with the negative reviews they get, & I hate the fact that I no longer get free valet parking & I have to pay double points on the weekend. However, I also hate beets and most green vegatables. :lmao: But I love going to Disney (Dec will be my 4th trip this year LOL) and I love most the people I have met on these boards. Again, thanks for the positive post.

Chat can be intimidating the first time in, jump back in and say Hi :wave2:. Make sure you make your font size big so we can see you post and if you enlarge the window on your computer screen, it slows the posts way down making it easier to follow.

Just wanted to say :welcome: to the newbies!! I wandered over into this forum soon after it opened up and finally found "home". :lovestruc I've been able to attend some of the DIS events and have met some truly wonderful and amazing people...

Don't be afraid to just jump right on in! And in chat...yes it moves quickly, but just follow the advice of making your font bigger...expand your screen...and make sure that you check the option to display the user names and messages on the same line...

Hope to see you there! :thumbsup2

Any "new" group of people can be intimidating.....especially when it seems that most of them already know one another.

I often try to explain that none of us knew each other at the beginning. The podcast crew knew each other, but we were scared to death of this board.

I had answred Disney questions on other forums, but I never "chatted" with people. I answered questions and got out.

I remember asking Pete at the very beginning of the podcast if we should use "stage" names for fear that people might get to know the "real us".

It didnt take long to find out that people were interested in the "real us" but even better.....they were interested in letting us get to know the "real them".

I think the thing I love most about this place is the fact that people are very accepting of new people, different opinions and different ideas. We have some posters who are school age and some...well I'm not sure I should pick an upper age.;)

Also, I am never less than amazed at the level of generosity this group shows. This folks on this forum rally around those in need. I've been the recipient of that incredible positive energy more than once and am forever grateful.

It takes a while to get to know the personalities and the long running jokes, but thats true of any group you join.

The folks on this forum have been through the gamut of emotions and life experiences. We've celebrated births, birthdays, weddings, graduations, new jobs, new homes, interstate moves...you name it. We also worried when one of us falls ill or is going through rough times in life. We have also mourned the deaths of loved ones and rallied around those that needed us. Again, I have personally seen the power this group can offer.

I've said this enough to sound like a broken record but....

This is a community without doubt. The difference, in my opinion, is that this is a community by choice. We are not pushed together by location. Look around....we're a pretty far flung group. I think we have folks from all 50 states, Scotland, England, the Netherlands, Italy, Australia, South America, Canada. We are also not pushed together by chance....work, high school etc. We are a community because we choose to be a community. Thats pretty strong in my opinion.

As for those that want to stir the pot and post absolute negativity and attack memebers of the podcast team or the folks that post here....well.....I've pretty much had it and I will continue to call them out on their behavior. But enough of that. Thats a very small minority compared to the friendly welcoming group you usually find.

Thanks Royster for saying something that needed to be repeated and welcome to the Dis Unlugged forum to anyone new or lurking.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Roy! Welcome!

Again, are you coming on 2.0?

My husband and I had the time of our lives on PCC 1.0!

We really didn't have many real-life friends before the PCC other than our internet friends :).(if that makes sense) After attending the PCC we have many friends, we are even lucky enough to have a few live in our neck of the woods!!! I am so happy that we bought a Zune in Jan of 2008 and Jason (my DH) stumbled upon the DISUnplugged Podcast!!

The DIS has truly changed our lives for the better! (I mean, I don't think I would have even tried Five Guys if it wasn't for the DIS!:rotfl2:) Sometimes I wish we all lived a little closer, but that will happen soon enough when we all retire in Orlando!! :yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay:

BTW I don't think we are friends yet on Facebook, friend me here

Hi and Welcome to all the new posters. Hope to see you all around more often. The Dis has been my connection to the outside world. My DH and I work opposite schedules so we don't have a lot of time together. I spend most of my time with my 2 kids. It is so great to be able to have grown up conversation. I was lucky enough to have attended the 1st podcast cruise. My DH agreed to it because it was important to me, I wanted to meet my friends. It is so hard to explain to people that my best friends were people I had not met yet. When they saw the change in me for the better when I got home they understood more.

To the "newbies" who are brave enough to join in the Wednesday night chat...
it will seem like people know each other and you wonder how you will ever fit in and the conversation is all over the place and sometimes makes no sense at all. Just go with the flow, try to follow, don't get discouraged.

Six months ago I dipped a toe into chat. I recognized a few screen names, but I knew no one. Now, I sort of know people I have never met. Now when I log on, people type in a welcoming "Hi Lyn!". I am still amazed that people "know" me and I really look forward to eventually meeting them in person.

Don't let Kevin fool you...chat is intimidating whether it is your first or 15th time, in my opinion. It is the most fun you've ever had while trying to keep up with a moving target, though. Blink, and the conversation is gone and suddenly Nikki is giving birth to triplets and we never even knew she was expecting! Oh the rumors you can create when you only see part of the conversation.

Really, you have to go in knowing that most of the time people won't see your questions or comments because the lines have scrolled by while they were typing something else. This is not a personal slight (I don't think, unless they are trying to give me a hint :) ), just roll with it.

Welcome to the board! I hope you enjoy being here as much as I do!

First a big thanks to everyone for the kind words, I don't want to quote everyone (there are going to be enough, I just learned how to do it. So I'm Going to use it.)

Sorry we'll miss you at DAP Roy. Will you be joining us for 2.0?

Also a sad no. I work on the railway over here and we are allotted our annual leave on a rota basis (you are given your time off then it's up to you to try to swap it, so getting the more popular times is very difficult and also we have no children so I would rather somebody with a family have those times.) Maybe something in 2011 :wizard:

Any "new" group of people can be intimidating.....especially when it seems that most of them already know one another.

I often try to explain that none of us knew each other at the beginning. The podcast crew knew each other, but we were scared to death of this board.

I had answred Disney questions on other forums, but I never "chatted" with people. I answered questions and got out.

I remember asking Pete at the very beginning of the podcast if we should use "stage" names for fear that people might get to know the "real us".

It didnt take long to find out that people were interested in the "real us" but even better.....they were interested in letting us get ... Blah, Blah, Blah not in a bad way of course I just know this post is gonna be long... ... or saying something that needed to be repeated and welcome to the Dis Unlugged forum to anyone new or lurking.

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks Kevin, I really did just say it as I see it... BUT I can't believe that I got a reply from Kathy and yourself. :cool1:

So a little bit about myself then:-

Name's Roy, Royster in my user name comes from crisps (chips) that were around when I was in high school. I don't know if you had them in America but then were marketed to us as American! :rotfl: Somebody called me it, it stuck... I've used it ever since. I have never had one of those annoying messages saying 'User name already taken, try another'. 83 is my birth year.

I live in Nottingham in the UK, originally from near Liverpool. I don't know Robin Hood or the Beatles though :rotfl:. Although Robin Hood was on my train once .

I live with my partner Adam (he does something with computers, and so he made my new signature for me, for all future board activity click the bars they work.) I'm a Guard on the railway, I believe you would call it a Conductor (here a Conductor is a ticket collector.) I love trains, I love Disney and I can put them together and love Disney trains.

I first found the boards back in 2005 when I was planning our first trip. Like other people, I could not believe there were people out there as crazy as me :scared1:. I just mooched around and only finally joined in 2007 when I was off work sick. I was tired of looking at the adds and joined. :wizard: *no adds* I spent a lot of time looking around getting to know what was happening. they were my window to the world too. I'm Bipolar so was off work for many many months and it really helped. I got laughs and tears reading about everything that was going on, I was to scared to jump in not because I even for one second thought that I would get a bad reaction, I just never knew how to start .

That's about it really (gosh this has taken forever).

Oh and katscradle if your husband asks it's not because I'm a one finger typer I use three :rotfl: (he may remember that from chat the other night :rotfl2:. Tell him I was trying to find a link to the app I was trying to describe) But he maybe able to type quick, however you know know I can make a train move. Can he? ;)

End of waffle

Welcome Roy! :welcome::welcome:
However we are arriving at WDW on the 1st of December, I was thinking would you like to meet up! :)
My DH is on the boards as 3guysandagal!

Sorry I missed this one . If that is an actual offer of a mini meet then YES. I would be stoked to meet you!

First let me start by saying I don't want to 'flame' or alienate anyone.

I just thought I would start a thread to remind people that the community is here for good reasons! I want to put out to new visitors that you will be welcomed into the DIS with open arms (careful I'm pretty sure some people around here know what to do with those arms , I visited the chat for the first time the other night and there were some ruder-ies (my word) being disscused :rotfl.

Roy

Thanks for this very positive thread. It is nice to see. :welcome:

Just wanted to throw myself in here as well, I don't post very often here but always thought that this is a great group of people.(podcast team and listeners as well).

I was in chat once before and it was really fast and hard to jump in, maybe I will try again next week.

Anyway just wanted to say hi to everyone and :disrocks:

Follow everyone's directions about chat and it will be a lot easier to follow. :welcome:

Thanks Roy!
I am a lurker. I really enjoy the Disboards and the Podcast each week. Will try and participate more in the discussions, but I always feel the other posters are more informative and enjoy reading the posts.
Here's a joke that I think fits the disboards -

Knock Knock!
Who's there?
Disney.
Disney who?
I just stopped spinning, so I am Disney!

Please participate in more of the discussions. Usually by the third page we have moved on to a different subject anyway. Please join us. :goodvibes

It didnt take long to find out that people were interested in the "real us" but even better.....they were interested in letting us get to know the "real them".

I think the thing I love most about this place is the fact that people are very accepting of new people, different opinions and different ideas. We have some posters who are school age and some...well I'm not sure I should pick an upper age.

Thanks,
Kevin

Oh he did!
I have tears in my eyes! :)

::yes:: ::yes:: Thanks Kevin! :goodvibes

I don't post very often, but I have been an avid reader/lurker of the boards and podcast listener for years. My family and I are going to be at DAP and I look forward to meeting everyone there.

I can't wait to meet you and your family! :welcome:

Just so everyone knows....this is actually wdwowner posting under another name.

Thanks for the heads up Kevin. :thumbsup2

As someone who mostly lurks I am LOVING this thread. It truly shows why I love the boards. I mostly just read and like Kevin said, I post mostly to answer a question, not to "chat". I have been to chat once and was so lost it was crazy. I was not on PCC 1.0 because i was too afraid I wouldn't fit in. We actually spent that week at WDW but did not go on the cruise. Once I saw how good of a time everyone had I have booked us for 2.0! I can't attend DAP because I can't get time off work but I want to so badly. So in an effort to be more friendly with the folks on the board, I am gonna post more :)

Oh, and when does chat start/end on Wednesdays?

Oh, and when does chat start/end on Wednesdays?

Officially...I believe Chat is from 8:30pm - 10:00pm.

Unofficially....anywhere from7:00ish to 11:00pm EST ish.

Chat is quieter early and late.

I've been told that I have not described Chat very well.

Let me try again.....it moves at about 100 miles per hour....everyone can talk at once....the subject changes in nanoseconds...it's not the place for serious questions that need answers...you can watch or participate....it's a cocktail party at the speed of sound.

There.....I hope thats a better description.

Come join us......you'll have a good time.

Since Roy told you his, I'll tell you mine. ;)

I joined the DIS in 2003 :scared1: (WOW, that was a long time ago!!) I answer questions here and there and help contribute to the DISigns forum when I can. Like you all, I love all things Disney and people come to me all the time to help plan their trips. Now if I could just figure out how to make them take me with them as payment...:scratchin

We have, without effort, turned our kids into true Disey maniacs. One can tell you where a song comes from (show, movie, attraction, park) in about 1 measure. Makes a mother proud!

We LOVE DCL, and can't wait to cruise again...sometime. We've cruised with them 3 times (does that put me in the "tin" category?:lmao:)

I love the podcast and I believe my husband (who also loves Disney) has gone from thinking I'm crazy to secretly liking when I plug the iPhone into the car to listen. Shhh...don't tell him! He still thinks it's "my" thing. :thumbsup2 I sent in my first question the other day and you would have thought I was writing a check for a million bucks, I was so nervous! One question though - what's this about stayig out of the lakes?? I've totally missed something from earlier shows likely.

Like Roy, I cast spelling issues at the dog (which, we too, do not have)...but even if I did proof my posts, I wouldn't notice the problems!:rolleyes1:rotfl:

One question though - what's this about stayig out of the lakes?? I've totally missed something from earlier shows likely.

Several of the Podcast crew (not me) went on one of Disney's fishing excursions.

The guide showed them poisonous snakes and alligators in the lakes at WDW.

Also...Pete and Walter stayed at the Poly and watched people in the Seven Seas Lagoon. As there are signs posted telling guests that there is no swimming allowed, this became a point of discussion.

In addition, we have reported the fact that because of the continuous warm temperatures, a certain amoeba can grow and thive in fresh water. This amoeba can get into your body through your mouth and nose. Once inside, it causes flu like symptoms before eventually killing you.

THere have been too many stories of people dying (usually children) from this thing picked up by swimming in lakes in FL.

Between the snakes, alligators, brian eating amoebas and signs telling you it's not allowed....we still see people in the lakes at WDW. Folks have posted photos of guests in the water.

Someone on another Podcast suggested that we were over reacting and that the lakes in WDW were "safe". Shortly after that another child died from this amoeba.

It's been reported that a young man in his 20's recently was infected with this. He picked it up at a local knee boarding place in Orlando.

While it sounds funny at the end of the show....it's a very serious reminder that there can be bad stuff in the warm, fresh water lakes in FL (and other places) and that everyone should "stay out of the damn lakes".

P.S. I apologize if I have the chronology wrong....but this is the gist of it.

I've been posting on the Dis for a couple of years but just recently discovered the podcast, which I really enjoy. I've said here before that I listen to a number of Disney podcasts, but this is the only one that literally makes me snort with laughter (which is not good at the gym, by the way). Anyway, just wanted to say hello as I'm more of a lurker on this board. I'll be in WDW on 12/12 and would love to go to DAP but I'm driving all day from NC and might not make it. Still trying to figure out how to make it work and get the husband to put the kids to bed while I go out and have fun.

Remind Pete that there are things right there in good 'ol FL that can kill him...he doesn't have to go to another country next time! :lmao:

Thanks for the insight behind the phrase, Kevin. I wouldn't want to get in that water just for the simple fact that hundreds of people have probably "relieved themselves" over the side of their rental boat (much like any other lake or a public pool). Eww! Not to mention the body consuming bacteria.

People! Don't be a flake...stay out of the lake. :thumbsup2
