Like it too. But my vote was for fuschia. Horrible color, but it is a mix of pink and purple right?

Teal is kewl. I heard this from a fellow DVCer yesterday at church. Thanks for this picture. I wonder if they will make another hidden mickey pin for it to go with the other 12. :)

Monorail #12 comes on line later this year. Any guesses as to the color?

Two Possibilities:
1) Garnet (no risk) - complete separation from pink/purple.
2) Fuchsia (risk) - pink/purple blend, and a bit risky given the colors of the two monorails that collided. WDW ought not to consider this without the family's blessing, IMO. Too easy to associate it with that disaster.

Just thought I'd post an observation about monorail teal- all of the passenger cars (except for possibly one) were taken from monorail pink. All of interior cars/cabins (whatever you call 'em) still have the pink detailed ceilings, they were never painted teal. I thought I was mistaken until I checked out each of them individually over the weekend... I wasn't able to hop into the last car, so it's the only one that may have been purple.

Crystal / Pearl with a thin purple strip.

We rode on several monorails during Marathon Weekend as we were staying at the Contemporary. The inside "trim" around the ceilings did not correspond to the color stripe. I remember thinking about how odd it was for Monorail Gold to have a pink interior.

I think the original gold monorail had a fire or something. I don't remember exactly. Can anyone recall?

An electrical fire at the MK station I think. I know the silver fire in the 80's was a real mess and the whole car was melted but I didn't think the other fire was any big deal and was contained to the interior functional components.

Hmm...I've noticed the "pink" stripe around the inside before on a few occasions, and I don't think it was just because we kept getting on the same particular monorail - are we sure the inside stripes are supposed to match?

I am surprised they aren't moving on to the Mark VIII. How long has the Mark VI been around for?

The Mark VI's have been around since the late 80's/early 90's.

That being said, monorails arent cheap and with Disney stock staying as low as it is, I don't see any spending deemed "unecessary" happening any time soon.

ETA: Here's a picture of the newest automated monorails by Bombadier (The company that made the M-VI).

Every train system is different, but I believe most trainsets nowadays are designed with a 40-50 year lifetime with a midlife overhaul. So the Mark VIs probably have another 20 years on them.

32 bucks a share for Disney is "low"? Employee price in June of 2002 was $12.25.....now that was low :woohoo:

As I understand it, Bombardier actually owns all the designs of the monorails, which explains why the designs look so similar.

And I'm not sure the price of stock would matter that much, unless they were to issue stock to raise the funds - I don't think Disney would need to do that though.

On my most recent trip (Late Dec, and early Jan) I asked a CM is Monorail Teal was active. She said that it was actually "Monorail Aqua." Anyone know the actual name? I know it really makes no difference, but still, lol.

I had heard that the 12th Monorail was going to be Maroon.

the actual name is Monorail Teal. That CM gave you the wrong information. I hope it wasn't a transportation CM who told you that, because that would just be sad.

edit: as far as the upgrade, I've been told that the current system is unable to support the power requirements of the new monorails that are available. Even if they wanted to redo the whole system, I can't imagine any time of the year when they could take the monorails completely out of service to do an upgrade like that. They don't even have the time to do proper maintenance because they are always in need of so many trains. With the discounts they now offer year round, it's really difficult to make upgrades and do refurbishments on the transportation system.

IIRC, the power system wasn't even able to support the Mark VI fleet, and there was a jousting match between Bombardier and Disney over it. I'm not sure how it was resolved exactly...

I believe the reference was to the fact that Disney is now run by suits who care only of stock price....which is why they have had a string of incidents where they failed to build and rehab what was necessary....and have opened 6 themeparks in the last 20 years that weren't even close to complete...some actually embarassing...all to stop the investment and start selling merchandise and food....

Disney has a wall street mentality...plain and simple

as with most mechanical things though at some point the maintenance costs will rise to the point where they have no option.

the other thing to consider is that newer monorails may well be more energy efficient? so there could savings to be made over long term.

So Teal is replacing Pink and what is the 12th one that is being replaced again?

Pink and Purple are the ones being replaced. Technically, Teal is not replacing one or the other. It was actually created by remating the undamaged ends of Pink and Purple to each other.

As I understand it a new trainset will be built from the Mark VI designs to bring the fleet back to 12.

As I understand it a new trainset will be built from the Mark VI designs to bring the fleet back to 12.

The "new" 12th train will apparently consist of the repaired rear cab car of monorail Pink, the repaired front cab from Purple, and the remaining undamaged (center) cars from Purple. It has been reported, though it may or may not be accurate, that monorail Teal consists of entirely Pink equipment except for the rear cab car, which is from Purple. If so, that means the 12th train will have all Purple equipment except for the repaired Pink rear cab car.

The repairs to be cab cars are quite extensive, with new carbodies, so the end cab cars may be more new than old, but there isn't actually a "new" monorail being built.
