We arrived at Disney's Beach Club Villas (BCV) Friday, October 23 to spend 9 nights in a 1-BR.

I've been working 12-hour days for the past few months and I really needed this vacation. I have absolutely nothing planned except dinner ADRs. We've haven't been to a park and probably won't until day 4.

I got a free 7-day 2-park pass for Universal Studios (Super Bowl promotion), so I'll probably wander over there sometime during the work week.

The weather is hotter than we usually experience this type of year, but not too bad.

We're in a room on the 5th floor of BCV, facing Epcot.

http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee26/DVC_Mike/20091024_1397.jpg

This is actually our second room. We originally were given a room on the 5th floor facing the "quiet" pool. However, last night at 11pm, it wasn't that quiet, with kids screaming and jumping into the pool.

We asked the front desk if there was any possibility we could move, and they quickly found us the room we're in. Even though we spent a night in the other room, they waived the room change fee!

When we got back to the new room this afternoon, there was a fruit and cheese basket waiting on the table for us!

Sun Artist Point (WL)
Mon Jiko (AKL)
Tue Kouzzina (BW)
Wed Le Cellier (Epcot)
Thu Flying Fish Café (BW)
Fri Boma (AKL)
Sat Yachtsman Steakhouse (YC)
I'm loking forward to a very relaxing vacation at Walt Disney World!

I always enjoy your trip reports and beautiful photos! I'm looking forward to hearing what your DW thinks of Kouzzina. I haven't even looked at their menu yet so I have no idea what the food is like there but I know that if your DW likes it, I probably will too.

I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing stay.

Hooray! It's a Mike report!
How did you manage to snag ADRs at all of those great places? Did you call at opening on your 90 + 10 day?

We spent the whole day at Stormalong Bay. Had lunch at Beaches and Cream.

We had dinner for the first time at Todd English's bluezoo (http://www.swandolphinrestaurants.com/bluezoo/)at the Dolphin hotel.

My DW absolutely loved it! It was expensive but worth it. It felt very much like a restaurant you'd find in San Francisco.

hi Mike - I'm another fan of your great trip reports.
we were at BCV yesterday & remarked on the screaming at the 'quiet' pool as we walked by. glad you got switched without hassle.
we always request 'woods view' there.
we ate at Captain's Grille last nite, too. we'll be at AKV (concierge!) starting Monday for my b'day :cake:- perhaps at Jiko Monday nite also. maybe we'll c u there.
congrats on getting Le Cellier.
we're disappointed that Kouzzina doesn't accept TiW, but not surprised. UPDATED:Disney Dining says Kouzzina doesn't accept TiW, but I called the restaturant directly and the hostess said they DO!
hope that u & Mrs DVC Mike have a great vaca. looking forward to your comments & photos.

Mike, I'm going to guess the reason there was no room change fee is because they probably had several other complaints about noise for the same reason you mentioned. I will never understand why Disney resorts don't feel it's a good policy to control the unrulely, and instead compensate the ones who really pay the price for those who cause issues. Glad you got the free room change and fruit basket though!:thumbsup2

I got up this morning and for the first time, all my stress from work was gone and I felt relaxed.

I went for a nice morning walk around Crescent Lake, which is one of my favorite things to do when I stay at BCV and BWV.

Here is Mrs. DVC Mike's lengthy review of Captain's Grille.

The first day that we arrived, my DH had wisely kept the reservation destination low key, we ate at Captain’s Grill at Disney’s Yacht Club resort. We have never been, so of course I was worried. One of the reasons I like to stick with the Chief/Restaurants I know is that I have so many allergies that it can be quite challenging to "create" a meal for me while maintaining the kitchen for all the other guests or perhaps just annoying too.

As I am sure it has been mentioned in the past, I have eight dietary guidelines, some allergies some choices, all strictly adhered to by me. When we were seated we went through the usual routine of waiting for the chief to come and speak with us. I was pleasantly surprised when I turned to see our old friend Brian from the Yachtsmen Steak House! Well, it is quite possible that I squealed, although more than likely that was in my head. He is WONDERFUL for many reasons, but first and foremost his wife has celiac disease, so he is “schooled” to say the least in this arena. Not to mention, he has always gotten that I am not able to go out much at home so essentially we save nearly all of our dining out for our Disney vacations (this is one of the main reasons we signed up for DVC).

I ordered the iceberg wedge that of course has the blue cheese that I cannot have (made with gluten) so he went to Yachtsman Steakhouse next door and picked up their (fancy)blue cheese so that I could enjoy the full flavors of the salad as it was intended, Yummy! In addition to the cheese, it comes with a dressing called green goddess that he was kind enough to put on the side so that I could use as much or as little as I wanted, again something he knows I like to do. Brian is also aware that I love the truffle mashed potatoes at Yachtsman Steakhouse, so of course he was kind enough to go grab a small portion of those while he was there to accompany the veggie plate he made for me as my entree. I was thrilled, to say the least, as I basically ate a “Yachtsman Steakhouse” meal (not really) at a Captain’s Grill price tag. Now before everyone goes in expecting that to be a literal statement, understand that it just had the feel of Yachtsman Steakhouse because of the potatoes that I know were from next door and because Brian worked at Yachtsman Steakhouse (and still does a rotation there) and I know his cooking methods. I was thrilled with the whole meal, an outstanding value with all the thrills that come with Disney dining (surprises all around).

I would like to point out for those of you who do not know the greatness that is Disney, if you go to a restaurant and you are completely thrilled with the way a meal is prepared, asking to speak to the chief or at least getting their card (or name) is a great way to further guarantee an excellent dining experience. At this point I can tell by the conversation at the table if the chief I am speaking to is going to throw a plate together with existing sides that are usually very salty (for me anyway) or if he or she gets that dining out at Disney is the only time I am able to enjoy eating out. The one’s that get it, excel all expectations and the ones that are maybe not on their game, still provide good meals but nothing that could compare to a chief that is totally focused on your meal for true enjoyment of that guest. Always get the name when you are 150% satisfied! That being said I am not trying to imply that a lot of my meals fall short, what I am saying is that when I meet certain chiefs they just get me, I am sure that is true for anyone. So again get the name of the chief when they cook your meals the way you like it.

Back to Brian, if you are lucky enough to be able to dine with him as your chief, sit back relax and know you are always in good hands. Happy dining!

Mrs. DVC Mike

Here is Mrs. DVC Mike's lengthy review of Captain's Grille.

I'm so glad to read Mrs. DVC Mikes review! I too have a lot of dietary "issues", and I love dining out at WDW, because it is the easiest place to get all my special needs met. I too end up asking to speak the the chef at each TS spot, and I've never been disappointed doing so. By the way, Mrs. Mike, you will find the Yak and Yeti chef is another one of those "speical" ones! Our special places at Disney where we find very accommodating chefs are Artist Point, Turf Club, Yak and Yetti, Teppan Edo, and Jiko. I'm anxious to try Sanaa next trip too.

DVC Mike, is the TV in your room flat screen? I was at BCV the week before you and had a flat screen TV in my room. However, someone just posted a picture from there yesterday and they had the old style TV in their villa. Maybe BCV is in the process of changing over.

Not to hijack your thread but they are doing rehab inside too....they awoke us yesterday with noise at 7:30 and this morning the same thing but by 9AM they started hammering loudly and repetitively , pick up a nail, hammer three times...it was sooo loud had to call to ask about it , it was really bad, I am not a complainer, someone came to soothe that complain but long story short they were doing the rooms above us putting in carpet strips for new carpet and nailing into cement...they could only maybe move us to another resort, but for 2 days it was not worth it. I hope no one else is having this problem because it does not seem the rooms here are not occupied because according to the CM they will be at it all week all day long. :sad2:

I talked to Tim K. (tjkraz) yesterday, and he asked to be moved from his current room at BWV due to construction going on in the room above him from 8am - 5pm each day. They had nothing available at BWV, so they moved him over to Kidani Village.

Wasn't he in a standard view room? So, room refurb has nothing to do with external refurb then? For instance, they're doing BW view external refurb, but standard view rooms?

I'm amazed that you got all those beautiful pictures around WS with no one in the picture. The streets are empty! How do you do that? I'm especially interested in the one in France by the fountains. I've never seen it empty like that during the day, even when I'm one of the first ones at rope drop from the International Gateway at 11:00. So what's your secret? And do you run to Italy to be first there? Love those!

I was listening to the PODcast today, from last week, while I was at the gym (I know, an unusual motivator, but it's mine, nonetheless!:rotfl:) and they were talking about CS and Celiacs.... my oldest is autistic, so I definitely have an interest- but I also thought about you and DW- do you ever venture to CS, or do you stick to TS primarily to feel safe? ( I personally stick to TS because...i really like TS! :thumbsup2 But I do like a little CS in my day sometimes....:goodvibes)

Can I ask--how was Kouzzina's?

The food was very good, but we thought the portions were a bit small for the prices.

I had the slow-cooked Lamb Shank served with Oven-baked gigantes beans and pepper sauce and it was great. The meat was so tender and tasty and just fell off the bone.

My DW had the spiced briami oven-roasted vegetables, oregano, and mazithra cheese served with herbed orzo.

Of course, I had the Baklava for dessert!

Despite the smallish portions, we've added Kouzzina's to our list of places to dine at WDW and we'll be back. In fact, I've already booked an ADR for our January trip.

Ellen,

I'm happy to eat CS (and did so on my solo trip to DLR earlier this year). However, my DW tends to eat solely at TS due to her numerious allergies (Celiac/gluten, Soy, etc) and food preferences (Vegetarian, low-sodium).

She will rarely eat CS and only when she know's it is completely safe. For example, she'll eat at the China CS in Epcot and order a plain bowl of rice. Kind of boring, but safe.

Each of my six home resorts offers a different feel and I enjoy them all. I enjoy BCV because of it's location right outside Epcot, the access to some great dining at four resorts and two theme parks, and Stormalong Bay.

But hey, I'll be back at BLT in just 38 days, and VWL in just 73 days, and Kidani Village in just 129 days... :cloud9:

OK, here is Mrs. DVC Mike's extremely long review of bluezoo...

If heaven played rock n’ roll and had girls wearing fish net stockings, this would be it!

There are almost no words to describe the wonder that is bluezoo, almost.

We took a lovely walk from our room to the restaurant and accidentally walked in the back door near the bathrooms. Actually we were trying to get out of the unexpected heat and that did cause us to miss the first impression of the entrance which has the TV waterfall but that was fine. As soon as we were noticed, three of the wait staff personnel pointed the way and one of them escorted us to the hostess stand, past the open salad station and through the bar.

Now, I was a little surprised to see the hostess attire which is very rock n’ roll, they are dressed in small shirts even smaller shorts and fish net stockings with high heeled knee high black leather boots . At first glance I am not afraid to tell you I giggled to Mike because it is not the normal Disney standard that you see, however after you spend time in the restaurant you will understand that it works well with the theme and let’s face it, they wore it well.

I have mentioned in the past that lighting is of particular interest to me in restaurants, as I feel it plays a big part in setting the tone for dining. I find a blue hue particularly pleasant which this restaurant is laden with, yeah! I do not remember the song playing when we walked in, but it was by Pink Floyd, I thought that was kind of cool.

We were seated with Kin who was clearly a professional wait staffer. He guided us the entire evening; he was efficient, courteous but at the same time was not hanging over us. His assistant Eric was equally as professional. I suppose I should point out at this time that the level of service at bluezoo parallels Victoria and Albert’s in many ways, much more than other Disney “signature” restaurants. For instance, when Eric poured our water he used both hands, one to pour the water and the other held a cloth napkin to avoid any splashing on the guests and he did this each time he refreshed our water glasses. If you get up from the table for whatever reason, upon returning your napkin is refreshed, assuming you were out of your seat long enough for them to do it. Whenever I was done with a course Eric did not remove my plate before Mike was done with his portion so that Mike did not feel as though he needed to rush. Anyone who embraces dining out as an event recognizes that these actions alone will set a restaurant above others. Honestly it took a minute to get the feel of this place but once I did I realized how cool it was. They are completely new age/rock n’ roll with the high quality of Victoria and Albert’s, not an easy thing to pull off and they do it beautifully!

Once Kin heard the list of my dietary restrictions he tried to make suggestions but would forget one allergy or another and quickly smiled saying “perhaps I should just go get the chief”. This is where things went from good with humor to great.

Chef Aaron Christian came to our table and after announcing that they receive an abundance of organic veggies from a nearby farm, I gave him free rein to surprise me with a mixed veggie platter cooked with his imagination and skill, so glad I did! (Keeping in mind that I did explain my limited ability to dine out and if he would please put a little chef love into my meal I would greatly appreciate it). Well you know what they say; be careful what you ask for! Although I had only ordered a veggie platter I soon received a lovely salad of mixed greens and steamed multi colored beets lightly tossed with a Moro blood orange and Myer lemon dressing with chunks of plain goat cheese and drizzled with basil olive oil. Kin had also picked a lovely Chardonnay to go with my salad. OH MY you know what, WOW! When Chef delivered the salad and told me what it was dressed with I was so excited because I have just this last spring purchased both citrus trees for our home garden.

For anyone that does not know the Myer lemon is sweet instead of sour so you can make lemonade (for some) without sugar, think of the difference between a Key lime and a New Zealand lime. The Moro blood orange is a seedless sweet orange from the Mediterranean.

I cannot tell you how perfect this salad was, the dressing was sweet with a hint of citrus and very lightly applied, so it was not overwhelming. The basil oil was put toward the edge of the plate so as to not drown the leaf lettuce, my kind of eating. I then asked Chef if I was receiving another dish because I thought I had only ordered the veggie platter and he informed me that I was. Realizing that I had discussed a salad with Kin I chalked it up to lines being crossed and truth be told I am glad they were, my meal was better for it.

After my first course had been bagged for a late evening snack (you know it!) there was more giggling with an even greater appreciation for what they were pulling off, then came the main course.

Chef Aaron escorted my meal to our table and proceeded to explain. He had created five sections to my plate. Two sections were of baby Russian purple and baby yellow potatoes (I think those were the varieties). They had been steamed and lightly tossed with garlic, onion and Truffle oil. So simple and yet so delicious! The other two portions were steamed greens over a potato cake thing, this where the description gets difficult. They looked like a wedge of tofu that had been browned but it was all potato. It was soft yet firm enough that it held its shape even after I cut into it. it had a simple flavor that was perfectly complimented by the steamed greens that draped over them. Down the center of the plate ran a perfectly steamed portion of greens (I do not remember what kind) with a delicate hit of an oil sautéed flavor. Now I know that he gave me all of the details of what the flavors were, but he lost me at hello! I could only dive in.

Half way through the meal Kin walked by and somehow in conversation dessert came up, he announced that they were making something special for me. So at this point I was getting a three course meal when I had only ordered a main course, having no doubt that I had the option to decline, I didn’t. It became clear to me based off of the salad that this meal would rival any meal I have ever had at Disney and so having told Chef he had free rein, I got comfortable and ready.

After removing the “snack for later” # 2 (actually I made a killer omelet with the left over veggies in the room the next morning), Kin handed both Mike and I a dessert menu. The dessert that they had chosen for me was the sorbet filled meringue thing with fruit and yummy ,yummy with more yummy. I do not remember what all was in it, but I was wise enough to have listened to Kin, on his suggestion I asked that it be accompanied by the glass of Champaign they had suggested on the menu. If you ever get this dish and alcohol is not an issue, get the Champaign with it. Had I not listened, this would have been way too sweet for me. The Champaign is very dry and is nicely balanced with the sweetness that the desert carries. Now I rarely get desert and I do mean rarely, I ate almost the whole thing as it was so good. As my general rule, I might get a salad and main course without dessert. This restaurant warrants a light lunch in the day with the full intention to indulge during dinner. Realizing this fact early on in the meal I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed myself that night. It was one of those Disney nights where everything is perfect, especially the meal.

After picking up the dessert dishes I insisted on speaking with the manager on duty. Soon General Manager Doug Draper came to the table and after listening to my high praise, he insisted that next time if we give them more notice they could have an even more impressive meal for me (you know I am taking advantage of that), oh yah did I mention this entire meal was prepared on the fly!

Well I am sure I do not need to tell you we will be returning to bluezoo often, I have even gone as far as to tell Mike that I am willing to forfeit two signature meals to balance the cost of this one, as I said for V&A.

So for a brief overview, they do play Rock N’ Roll but quietly and the hostess attire does have a “sexy” look to it so if you are someone that is offended by this I would go take a “tour” of the restaurant before committing to a reservation (this might seem unnecessary to some, but I can easily see someone being offended). For what it is trying to be and how they deliver it, this place ROCKS!

In short, bluezoo is the Rock N’ Roll version of V&A.

Happy Dining!

Mrs. DVC Mike (and proud to be)

One final note- I do apologies for the lengthy posts I write, it is just the way I am.

It is a great place for an adult's only meal for those who want a date night. We schedule a dinner here every trip since we have been Swan dwellers for the past 6 years!! I guess that Disney's deal with Coca Cola must extend to Nescafe, the horrible dirty dishwater that is called "coffee" at WDW. I usually stay at BWV and used to walk around the lake in the morning and stop at Tubby's at Dolphin, where I would get a Starbucks to go. Haven't been there since it changed to Picabu so don't know if they are still serving Starbucks, but I would guess that they are since Fresh still serves Starbucks.

Enjoyed Mrs DVC Mike's bluezoo review - as a vegetarian I really really appreciate it when a chef goes out of their way to put together a nice veggie dish for me if nothing appeals or suits on the the menu. Mike you seem to like to just stroll around the parks and soak up the ambiance and occasionally do an attraction or two, is that fairly accurate? That was pretty much the MO for the one trip DW and I did alone and I can't wait to do another. Don't get me wrong I've had some great trips with my kids with us, but going without them is a completely different type of trip.

OMG! I think I would really have to move into the castle if Disney ever put Starbucks in their parks! That would just be a dream come true, wouldn't it? :cloud9:

Me too! Maybe if we all sign a petition declaring our love of Starbucks, Disney would bring them onboard. :worship: Starbucks... almost as much as Disney.

That's the mode we're in right now. On our last trip, we rode a total of 2 rides for the 4 days we were there. We enjoy strolling the parks, people watching and experiencing things we don't get to enjoy while waiting in line for an attraction.

Thanks, Mike, for the trip report. Your reports are always enjoyable to read, but even more so when we have only 3 weeks until we're there ourselves. Reading your reports and seeing your pictures are a great way to pump us up for our stay at BWV.

We went on the Characters in Flight Balloon ride (Operated by Aérophile) at Downtown Disney today. For those of you who haven't been, it takes you in a giant tethered helium balloon up about 400 feet in the air. This ride is a copy of the one they have at Disneyland Paris.

It's $16 per person and the ride lasts between 5-10 minutes. The balloon itself is attached to a gondola that is 19 feet in diameter and holds up to 29 Guests and the pilot at a time. The number of guests allowed will be reduced based on the velocity of the wind.

This morning when we went up, the wind was about 16 miles per hour at the top, so they were limiting it to just 6 guests in the gondola. It was pretty cloudy and probably not a good day to get any great pictures.

Mike,

Great trip report, and I love the pictures. We were at BCV for most of the week as well and had a great week.

I had to laugh at this picture - the row of beach chairs on the right that is closest to the pool and the blue backpack that is on the ground next to the chair closest to the end - definitely ours! And I'm pretty sure that is me and my family near the Sinking Sand buoy!

Thanks for some great pictures of our shared week!

DVC Mike:

Thanks for the great trip report and pictures. We are taking some very good friends to the World next year that have not been for quite some time and I keep having her go to your report to see the wonderful pictures of the Beachclub and other things.

I went to Best Buy and Target regarding your camera that takes the best pictures by the way and it appears that a next generation has been released. I was ready to buy your exact camera as your pictures are so good. Thanks for sharing...always enjoyable.

Mike, you certainly have a keen eye for just the right picture. Nice work!:thumbsup2 I especially enjoyed the pictures of Crescent Lake at night, just spectacular.

I noticed you took several shots of the Grand Floridian as well. It seems that a DVC addition at the GF is coming at some point in the not too distant future. Is that a DVC resort you would be interested in owning? I certainly am.

Thanks again!

Wow - the past few days sure have flown by! I can't believe you leave tomorrow :( Thanks so much for sharing all your pics with us, Mike! You have made it hard for me now to decide whether to try BCV next December 2010 or stay again at the BWV w/boardwalk view :thumbsup2 I'm kidding but the BCV's are really beautiful. Have a safe trip home, Mr. & Mrs. DVCMike!

Thanks for sharing your trip with us, Mike. Your photos are fabulous. I am planning a stay at BCV in about 18 months and plan to make that walk around crescent lake in the morning too. It looks so peaceful -- great way to start a day. Good for you that you are back at BLT in a month. Probably makes your trip home a little easier! Safe trip home.

I know people having been wishing for a a DVC addition at Grand Floridian and even at the Polynesian. Do you really think that either property as the room for such an addition? Have you heard something that indicates that DVC is coming soon to GF? Trying not to get my hopes up, because I think that would be great if it's true.

Well, we just pulled into the driveway and unloaded the car. I guess that's the official end of this vacation.

It's 82 right now in Orlando but only 56 at home and drizzling rain. :sad2:

I know questions came up in regards to your camera, I am curious are you using a photoshop to adjust contrast or anything? If so please share what you use. Always look forward to your great reports. Thanks in advance.

Me too! Maybe if we all sign a petition declaring our love of Starbucks, Disney would bring them onboard. :worship: Starbucks... almost as much as Disney.

I'm another vote for Starbucks on property!! :drinking1

I would love to find out who the "powers that be" are that could make a difference for all of us with this coffee situation ~ we could start an online petition & send it in to them!! :rotfl:

We sometimes stay at Shades of Green and they have Starbucks. ;) Maybe add that to the petition even though Disney doesn't own SOG but it couldn't hurt to say "Hey by the way....." :goodvibes

Thanks for the awesome trip report! I felt like I was there.

Your pictures were gorgeous. How many megapixels is your camera? Seeing the size of that balloon ride, I MIGHT actually try it. I know DH will love it. The pictures of the Boardwalk made me want to be there NOW. I just loved looking at all your pictures. Thanks again.

Fantastic TR, AMAZING and Beautiful Pictures.
One correction: Rip Ride Rockit is in UNIVERSAL STUDIOS, not Islands of Adventure. Just so no one gets lost or confused. The entrance is just past Jimmy Neutron walking towards the New York scenes- then turn the corner to the Left.
