RV Steps

Just got to Ft. Wilderness in my Class A and my steps won't extend on my RV. Has anyone ever had this problem? Any simple ideas on how to fix it? I have the button for the steps activated and they usually go in and out based on if I open the door or if I turn the ignition.

ok, sorry to ask a 'girl' question, but where is the fuse located? I know where the breakers are, but there are no fuses there.

Try tapping the switch near the bottom of the door sometimes the switch sticks. The step fuse`would be with the fuses for the chassis (engine).

What kind of Class A is it? We had this happen a few months ago in our 2006 Fleetwood. I had a broken foot at the time, so it we really needed for the step to come out. In our case, the motor had burned out, so in order to work correctly we were going to have to replace the motor. We had someone come out and look at it, and he removed a pin which allowed the stairs to come out. Of course, you will have to put the pin back in when it is time to drive home.

I also had to use the remove pin method once when my controller went out. But then the pin would not readily go back in, so i just wrapped a bungie cord around the steps for the trip home.

Bungie cords and duct tape, never leave home w/o them. LOL

If all else fails, try disconnecting the motor from the steps and moving them by hand. If they seem even a little hard to move, try cleaning them and then greasing them. These steps seem to not work well even when there's the smallest smount of friction.

My class c had a spell of non opening steps, tech said it was loose ground wire - did it again later, I bravely did what he did and wow they worked.

This has happened to me before but in my case the steps were down and wouldn't come up.
I called the factory and the guy told me to look under the steps and locate the motor. Tap the motor with a hammer because sometimes the brushes get stuck.

This worked for me once but as usual I put off changing the motor and the next time it happened tapping on the motor wouldn't help. If you have to change the motor and you have some mechanical apptitude, don't go to Camping World and buy a step motor. It will cost you $100+ when it's really just a electric window motor that you can buy at Oreillys for $40 and change it yourself.

Also, if you want to rule out a fuse or switch issue the wires to the motor have a in line plug a foot or so up from the motor. You can unplug the motor and put a nail in each side of the plug. touch those nails to the poles of a 12v battery or a battery charger and the motor will cycle if the problem isn't with the motor. Reverse the leads and it will cycle the other way.
