Being unfamiliar with the geography involved, has anyone done Xcaret on their own, rather than through the Disney Excursion? It appears as though it might be slightly cheaper for us (Disney charges age 3 and up, while 4 and under are free directly through Xcaret), and that maybe we could have more time. But, I'd hate to risk "missing the boat" so to speak.

Thanks in advance for the good advice!!! We are sooooo excited to go...

Normally I like to do excursions on my own once I am familiar with a port, but for Xcaret I would do it through the cruise line because of the transportation issues involved. The ferries only run until a certain time, so I would be afraid of the risk of missing the last one. We did Xcaret via RCCL on Voyager of the Seas, and we literally did arrive back late! But that was their problem, since it was an RCCL excursion.
On our 1/4 Western, we will probably book the stingrays through Captain Marvin's, but we'll do Xcaret through DCL.

I agree as well Xcaret is something you want to do w the ship excursion. Also if you follow their directions or they run late the ship will not leave without you. It's very expensive We went in Jan. & when it was over I honestly wished we hadn't spent all that money. If you do it you'll never forget it but it's expensive. Also put on your sun tan oil ahead of time especially if your prone to sun poisoning because they will take your suntan oil from you at the entrance. They seemed more concerned about the animals than the people who come to park. I get severe sun poisoning so for me it really changed the way I had to approach our day. Don't forget the under ground tunnel swim. This is really what made the day the nicest & we had the tunnels all to ourselves !!!!

When they take your sun lotion, they should give you some natural sunscreen. I was worried about the effectiveness of the natural stuff, as I burn very easily, but it really worked well.
And one warning...DO NOT drink the rice water! I had it with my meal, and it was soooo good (tasted like coconut), but I paid dearly later.

I agree with the other posters. You should do this through DCL. There will be a lot of travel time getting to and from for this excursion. Sounds like you might be taking very small children along, and I think you should consider that it is going to take a couple of hours or more each way to get to Xcaret...

If you are parked at Cozumel you will take a smaller fairy to Playa Del Carmen & the total time to get there is a solid 1 1/2 hours.
Enjoy !!!!
