Marathon day at MK - there for rope drop, left at 11PM (came back to camper for quick nap). My bike was stolen or "borrowed" from the marina sometime between 4pm and 11pm. Walked back to the camper (thank goodness we are relatively close to the marina). DH is dealing with security but I am sure nothing can be done.
Oh well - they have have stolen my bike but they cannot steal my MAGIC!

Man that sucks. I hope they find it for you and get the person who took it.

I saw a paper stuck to the posts at the bus stop one time, with a bike reward. It's really sad when people can be so mean. I hope they just took the bike out of mistake and will return yours.
A couple years back, i had a few things in the truck bed when we checked into the campsite. It was early so I didn't think they'd have it ready, but they did. Well we were running late to our ressie at Canada, and took the tent and fishing poles out of the truck. (we live close by) So after lunch we went home to gather the rest of our camping stuff. When we returned to the campsite, the polls and tent were gone. We called security and had the GM come out and everything, and they wouldn't do a thing for us. Even got a letter a couple weeks later saying "sorry, it's not our fault".
It was a brand new tent too, I was really looking forward to setting it up. Instead I got to be setting up our old tent in the dark. It wasn't a lot of money, I got it on clearance for like 40 bucks, but still.

I'm so sorry for your experience.
We actually had someone try to help themselves to our golf cart one time. It was a customized cart and looked nothing like a Disney cart. We were parked up at Pioneer Hall, and some friends of ours saw this couple walk up to our cart & sit in it. Then these people started trying to push it out of the GC parking area. The "thieves" were in their late 30's - early 40's - not kids. Our friend went over and confronted these people who told our friend that they couldn't find their key (they were obviously drunk). Our friend told them he would be glad to go into T.E. and get someone to help them. Then the "oh no, you don't need to do that" excuses began. Our friend let them go on for a bit and finally told them that his wife was getting a security person to talk to them about stealing the cart - that he was good friends with the people that actually owned the cart. This couple booked it out of there so fast that they left a trail of dust. They headed to the marina and hopped a resort launch. The "thieves" wouldn't have gotten too far because DH had installed a motor cut off switch in the trunk, and the trunk was locked. Thankfully, no damage was done, but I often think about what would have happened if our friends hadn't been enjoying a cup of coffee on the front porch at that particular time.
We always lock our bikes up when we leave them. Ask Denny about his granddaughters bike disappearing over the 4th of July weekend.
I hope your bike turns up unharmed, and I'm glad you're not letting this steal your magic!

Time and again I have advised people to lock their bikes, in part because I witnessed somebody try to steal mine and it was locked, which was the only reason they left it alone. Every time I mention locking it up, it seems the FW cheerleaders come out of the woodwork and say how they have never had a problem and FW is so safe and the Disney magic wouldn't let anybody do anything bad.

Mine was stolen too over Spring Break 2007-we got off the bus from MGM (now Hollywood Studios) and it was gone. It was also a long walk back to the now Full Hook up sites from Pioneer Hall. Security said it was probably some kids who didn't want to walk back to their site. they will probably find it pitched into the creek. NICE!-not! That doesn't help me now does it.
We NOW lock our bikes. Lesson learned.:thumbsup2
Sorry to hear about your bike...you're not alone.

Wow - We will definately be locking our bikes up but it does make me wonder about the saftey of our camping gear and tents at the site. Great - More to worry about.

I agree with ftwildernessguy, our locks are like AMEX cards, we never leave home without them (we also use them too)

So here is a question for the bike crowd. When my wife and I go next year we were planning on using our bikes to get from place to place. The question is will theives try to take parts off the bikes? they are mountain bikes, mine is $2300 and her's is $600. I plan to lock them up, but wheels and things could still be unbolted and taken off. :scared1:

IMHO, I would bring a good (Kryponite) cable lock and run it through the wheels and frame. They make a nice one the coils up and clips to the back of the seat for storage and transportation.

There's no way I'd have that expensive a bike at the fort. I would borrow some older bikes before I'd leave them even locked up. That's the kind of bike that is only outside when your butt is on the seat lol.

I have to agree with Donnie. I have a very expensive bike as well that I NEVER take camping. Right now, our camping is done in FL where I use an old beach cruiser and my kids use their own bikes. All 3 of these bikes can easily be replaced at Wal-Mart for $200, but we still lock them up when we are going to be away from them.

I don't leave the bikes locked at the campsite, but they do get locked up at any of the main places, like the bus stop, marina, and meadow.
If you leave your bike unlocked, some one can just hop on it, and no one would think twice about it. If they try stealing parts off of it, I think it would raise some eyebrows with passer-by's that they would at least tell some one working at the fort.
My only explanation for my tent getting stolen, was it was still in the bag/box, it was before 11am, and some one felt that we had already checked out and just left it behind. Hello people, it wasn't even out of the sealed box we bought it in.

We always locks our bikes especially when at the marina or at the stores. I would suspect alot of times it's just kids joy riding but that still doesn't help me if they are taken. This trip we have even started locking them up at the campsite. Just because it's Disney, doesn't mean you shouldn't take precautions.

I always felt like my stuff was safe at my site and my bike at the marina ,sometimes DH and the kids go to the park before me and I used to just put mybike next to thier locked up bikes rather than messing with the lock but last year 3 times just in the time I was catching the boat or returning security was there over stolen bikes -
So it must be very common now - so sad

So sorry about your bikes! I hope they are found. We have always locked our bikes when we are anywhere away from our site, but now I wonder if I should lock them at our site as well. In all of our trips, we have only had a bag of snacks stolen from our site (dang raccoons!). Are bike thefts up, or has this always been common?

Yeap, and when that jury rigged welding job you did on the back axle comes loose and that 24" tire hits em in the head they'll wish they never stole a bike.
Ooops, I better be careful. John might call security and make them get rid of the golf carts.

I actually bought "the club" which locks the pedal of the golf cart to the steering wheel. Having a custom cart, I don't want to take the chance. I believe all club car keys fit into any golf cart. People probably think I'm stupid, but there are too many a$$ holes out there even at disney these days

Yep, you're correct about the Club Car key....unless something has changed in the past few years. That's why my DH installed a cut-off switch to the motor. I'll have to have my DH look into the keying method GEM uses - whether they are individually keyed or a universal key. Although something tells me he already knows. He's very detailed when it comes to stuff like this.

That's my thought a joy ride to not have to walk and a simple lock would deter this and when we had bikes at FW always used them and never an issue.

I've never had anything stolen in over 30 years of visiting the Fort.....Of course, WE LOCK EVERYTHING UP that we value so that might have something to do with it. The Fort is a wonderful place, but chumps will take advantage to make a buck whenever possible.
If you value it, LOCK IT UP. I always remember an ad when I was little about leaving your keys in the car and the guy said "Don't make a good boy go bad". Bull dinky, just don't give a creep any opportunity.

a holiday weekend we couldn't find them until the following tuesday.
Once we got ahold of the right person we got them back no problem.

Hence why I said "borrowed". Haha. :)
well, when DH was dealing with FtW security and Orange County PD, Orange Co. PD asked security something along the lines of "has our friend been back?". Apparently there is an individual that has been sneaking into FtW from time to time and "relocating" things that belong to the guests. I don't think that FtW/Disney folks wanted us to know about that - but I think it's worth mentioning so that at least there is an awareness amongst our community here. We did lock the bikes up for the rest of the week - lesson definitely learned. My bike was never found, security contacted us late yesterday to confirm. However, the park manager did give me a free bike rental for the remainder of our stay. They did NOT have to do that - and that's one of many reasons that our family will continue to go there.
Trip report coming soon....we were in site 508. What a great loop! But I could sleep on the ground there and think it was wonderful. ;)
So sad that we're gone....looking forward to going back.

You always hope that everyone feels the magic at the parks and resorts and that your things are safe....but thievery is everywhere, a sad fact of life. We lock everything when not at our campsite. Our bikes are cheap, $50 on clearance at Wallyworld for one of them and $1 for the other one at the Goodwill. So, it's not the cost so much, it's just that we don't want to be left walking. I'd recommend leaving the expensive bikes at home and finding a cheaper model to bring with you. Check yard sales, goodwill, etc. and find a "disposable" model. Coming back to the marina late at night and finding your ride missing :mad:which results in a long walk back to your site is definately a mood buster for the evening.:sad2:

We arrived on Sunday morning, 10-18, and left Saturday, 10-24. We were on the right side of the loop road, as you follow it thru. Were you in a 5ver? Also, do you have a Golden Retriever? We had an orange Mickey lamp post, with miniature purple lights around it, and a Halloween flag and inflatable Mickey Jack-o-lantern. Born to Fish saw our green Mickey head in the window of the camper, and stopped to chat. We were glad to meet them. Very nice people. I hate that we didn't get to meet you. I remember the camper pulling out just before us, maybe 4 minutes ahead, and that they had a child with pink bicycle, and a satellite dish on the ground behind the camper. Let us know if that was you, and yes, it does stink that we were that close to more DISers, and didn't get to meet!

Yes, we do have a golden retriever. She's 9 and her name is Marley. And yes, that was my daughter's pink bike. And our satellite dish - we needed it because we watched SOOOO much TV while we were there. Haha.
My husband commented several times on how much he liked your Mickey lamp post. We will have one next time. Still kinda on a Disney learning curve.
I so wish we could have met.....it would have been cool to actually meet you.

how bout that, so close and yet unaware. we have 2 little dogs, they're both 5 this year, a cairn terrier named Yoda and a cocker spaniel who is Sophie. We love camping cause "the girls" can go with us. DH is my electrical guy, he's the designer of our Mickey lamp post, although I did assist a little :yay: . We're kinda new at this stuff too, but we're sure having fun learning. I'm trying to come up with an idea for a bigger disboards sign to go on our camper, still no good solution, but I'll keep working.:teacher:
Last year my sons scooter was taken from the campfire and it was never found.
