Hello everyone!
For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness
New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

Sorry I missed the October month start!
I finished a duathlon last weekend so can focus on Goofy. I have had to do some training rearranging to accomodate DD6's Saturday soccer schedule. I didn't think I'd be able to swing a 16 mile training run before a 9:30 game :thumbsup2
We'll be missing RFTT this weekend due to DD16's homecoming, but are really looking forward to TOT!
What's everyone else up to?

Congrats Mel on finishing the duatholon!! :cool1:
I'm trying to stay motivated. DH is a good coach, he has me following Hal Higdon's training schedule..
Sunday 5 miles
Monday rest, stretch and strengthen
Tuesday 4 miles
Wednesday 2 miles run or cross-train
Thursday 4 miles + strength training
Friday rest
Saturday 40 minutes cross-training
Sunday 6 miles
he has tips for indoor training! http://www.halhigdon.com/Ontherun/indoors.html
while I admire those of you that train in the rain and snow, I'm so not that dedicated!!
Right now I'm doing 17 min miles - at 5 - 6 mile "wogs" (Yes, I know that's slower than many people's walking pace!)

Hello WISHers. I'm training for the half marathon and using the MfM plan. The plan started this week!!!
I've been running three miles, three times a week since spring. I started with C25K in late January. I've done three short events and plan to run a 10k in November. It coincides exactly with my 6 mile weekend.
This week is/was
S - rest
M - more rest :) driving home from my parents
T - 3 miles, R3/W1 - DONE
W - bike - DONE
R - 3 miles, all run - DONE
F - walk - DONE
S - 4 miles, R10/W3
No matter how I break it down I come in around 13:00 mpm. I just want to stay ahead of the sweepers! I read Sandy's TR and, while I want to take pics SO BADLY, have decided no camera on the course!
I've got a WISH hat, WISH nametag and am going to load up on Alien Green Mickey heads at Home Depot. We have a POP reservation, but I may move it to POR for the discount (4/7). We're only staying five nights, but I that is my favorite moderate. Getting back there would be nice.
It's going to be cold in the morning - 30. This is new for me. Ear band and maybe a vest? I've run down into the 40s with shorts and short sleeves. Lots of experimenting.

Yup, it was cold. A little breezy, too. Run felt great. Times were good and average heart rate was sustainable.

I think my Polar was a little quick. Fourth mile clicked off 50 yards earlier than usual. Nonetheless, it is my first sub 12:00 mile! I need to calibrate it again at the school track.
Now it's time for the weekend! Laundry beckons. I hope to get to the Y tomorrow and get some core/strength training in.

Ronda you are doing AWESOME!! Congratulations!!
I find it very hard to figure out what to wear in the beginning of this cold weather, a lot depends on the wind - and if the sun is out or not!
and if I were you, take the camera ;) One of my thoughts on my first Half was "I may never pass this way again..." and I wanted to enjoy it! So if taking pictures will add to your enjoyment, think about taking the camera! I was able to stay in front of the sweepers - I didnt wait in line to have a picture taken - and I did stop in Frontierland to use the washroom! (flush and a/c!!)
I was going thru my pictures, and noticed I took a pic of mile 4 and mile 5 I was doing 17 min miles - but when I started at the top of the coral (the last coral if that makes sense...)
You are doing fine, and if you want to take pictures - take pictures!! :wizard:

Thanks Sandy. I run before sunrise Tuesday and Thursday. Weekend runs are when I wake up. If I don't wake until it's light out, that's VICTORY! Someone said it on another thread, I'm a vampire. I do so much better without the sun!
This week's plan.
M - bike to work - DONE
T - 3 miles, R3/W1
W - bike to work
R - 3 miles, all run
F - walk
S - 4 miles, R10/W3

Do we have any team members running/walking the Detroit Marathon on October 18th??? My friend Cathy and I will be out there cheering on a few of our other friends and want to be sure we have Scream Team support if we have W.I.S.H er's doing the race!! :cheer2:
Everyone have a great week!!

Okay, peeps, let's get this party started!!! We are 12 weeks and 2 days away from marathon weekend!!!!!!!!!!! :dance3::banana::woohoo::cheer2:
Goofy training is going good for me, my long runs have been excellent so far, which is always a huge morale booster! I've been using John Bingham's Goofy plan, it's not very aggressive, but I am not looking for aggression, I am looking to finish the 39.3 miles, so the plan is perfect for me. My back to back runs are 4/10 this weekend--my first 10 miler since the Flying Pig half marathon in May.
Mel--Congrats on the dualathon. I seriously don't know how you do it. How was Kaley's homecoming?
Sandy--Yay for your "coach"! Great job getting the miles. Pace doesn't matter, getting your steps in does!
Ronda--Congrats on training for your first half! 13:00 miles 12 weeks is great! Take your camera with marathon morning, your pace is no where near the sweeper cut-off, you'll have time to take your pictures. And if you start to slow down race morning and start to become concerned, well just carry your camera and keep moving. It's better to have the camera and not take a single picture, than not take it and regret not having the pictures. A picture of the marathon start is worth having to lug the camera for 3 hours!
I promise, promise, promise I will not be a stranger on these boards! By the way, are we having our annual Pop meet marathon Friday at 4:30??

Well, this might be the slowest moving monthly thread in a while.
Mel- Congrats on the dual.
Ronda- Looks like you are sticking to the training plan. That Run for the Chimps at the KC zoo looks fun. We have a couple of runs in the zoo here and they are always a blast.
I have been scaling the miles back a bit getting ready for the full on Oct 25th. I did a 15 mile long run last week and will go for about the same this week. I've had some pretty good 5K times as a result of all the miles I have been putting in.
If anyone is doing the Cleveland Marathon (http://www.clevelandmarathon.com/) next May of the Revolution3 Triathlon (http://www.rev3tri.com/cedarPointComingSoon.htm) at Cedar Point I'm going to be volunteering at both events. I had never volunteered before so I figured it was time to give some time back. With Indy so close to Cleveland I knew I wasn't going to run it and since I plan on doing tri training next year in hopes to start with a sprint I figured volunteering was a good way to see a large event. If nothing else it will get me some endurance karma points.

I think an OOPS moment happened  Funny, I looked at that thread because I was all jealous over Tracy's beach day photos and never thought twice when Mel started Oct again.
Perhaps Lily can combine them for us???? Please please with sugar, cherries and sprinkles on top? :flower3:
Krista? Is the baby signed up for any races/crawls? Glad to hear your training is going well. How is the IT band holding up? My fuzzy memory seems to recall you having an issue once.
MEL!!!! Congrats!!!!! Woohooo!!!!! :woohoo:
Oh and Krista! Thanks for the time reminder on the POP! Now we also need to confirm if the Coffee Meet on Monday is still at the Boardwalk this year and the time since I've only been once.
Ronda, I'm with Sandy... take the camera. You'll have it if you want it and as long as it's not a camera with the long long professional lens I'm sure you'll be fine. I dragged mine in the Princess, never took it out but wish I had. Had I not taken it I would have kicked myself. So at least I had the option to use it

Sorry, mea culpa, my bad and all that. I came looking for an Oct thread and didnt' see one, only found Sept. So sorry!
3 miles tonight for me, I'm traveling this weekend so trying to figure out how to work the b2b runs.
Krista...homecoming went well. She went with a group of girls to just have fun, so no pressure. Next up...SATs in Nov!

Hi all!! Finally back from our two weeks at WDW, had a blast! Got a 6 miler in while there. Good news is that the shin splints were temporary and have gone away completely now. Bad news is that DH and I both caught wicked colds while there, so last weekend's 10 miler didn't happen, and I'm pretty sure the 12 miler is out this weekend too since it's still sitting in both of our chests and heads. Hoping we survive the 1/2 on Halloween!!
Anyway, I've decided to sign up for the Princess 1/2 in March! Does anyone know if there are coupon codes out for that race? Just wondering before I pay the full registration fee...
Will catch up on what everyone is doing and post more later.

Hi folks. I am so glad I found this thread!!! I'm new to running, started in May to get in shape after having a baby in November. What a roller coaster ride it has been already! Through a long -lasting respiratory illness, broken toe, & what feels like endless aches and pains, I'm going to give the TOT 13K my best shot. Going solo, without DH & kids so I really need some inspiration!
Right now & doing 5-7 miles once a week & at least 3 miles 2 times a week. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't been around for a while. I finished off September with a 1/2 and then a couple of days later we were off to WDW for our vacation. I did get to run a couple of times while I was there. I did 3 milers around the Boardwalk/BC area and also at CS. Both were really scenic but boy was it ever humid! I got back last week and it was the complete opposite weather conditions.
I did a 10K on Saturday at the Toronto zoo. The course was twisty and had small hills but was manageable. I had no expectations since I hadn't really been training on vacation. I did run negative splits (with the last one being 9:35 m/m) and PB'ed at 1:00:24. I wish I had checked my watch near the end, I definitely would have tried to finish under 1:00.
Training for the January 1/2 starts this week but Mondays are my gym day so I'll be there doing weights, core exercises and the like. I'll be out tomorrow morning for a 3 miler! I noticed that the sun doesn't really come out until about 7:15AM so I guess I'll be running in the dark.
Carrie - Congrats on your half! Is the BW meet on Monday?
Kara - pixiedust: Hope your colds don't hang around!
Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

I hope I'm posting in the right place. I would love to become a member of the WISH Team. I'm a new runner myself and I would love to learn what other people are doing to gain speed and endurance. My husband and I ran our first 5K at the ESPN The Weekend in February 2009. We'll sign up again for 2010 as soon as it's posted on Disney's site. We had a great time last year. I would also like to train for a 1/2 marathon. Disney seems like they have their act together and we were quite impressed with the ESPN The Weekend 5K. :thanks:

Were any of you folks at the Detroit marathon this past weekend when the sad problems arose? I know it's rare for one person to die let alone three during a 1/2 or even full marathon.

Tina - Welcome! You are in teh right place!!!! My favorite starting advice for someone who want to do a half is to get John "The penguin" Bingham's MArathonign for Mortoals. it has trinign plkans, inspiration adn great advice. Le tus know if you have any questions alogn the way!
Dale - funwalker was at Detroit. She didn't even know anythign had happened unitl the news the next day, though. Just awful. I haven't seen if they had autopsy results yeat, but I don't understand. It was cold. So, no heat issues. just wondering if people just jumped in w/o trianing and should have been to the doc first. Just don't know. So sad fro any race, but it really is a great one and I hate to see this put a damper on it. (Not to lessen the fact that it's awful that so many (any) died.)
DId OK with 40 min last night, but a bit stiff. Must admit tha ti'm not looking forward to 45 min otnight, but that's how it's got to be due ot travel fro ToT.

Carrie - Have fun and good luck at TOT! I hope the hot weather in Florida has broken. Are you going to be getting the bonus medal?
Tina - Welcome! I'm certain not a speedy runner by any means. I've been told that it takes time to build up speed (I'm just impatient). I do a day of speedwork every week. For cross training, I do weights, core exercises and I'm trying to incorporate plyometrics.
AFM - Wouldn't you know it... the day on my schedule that calls for speedwork, it's raining. I doubt it will be dry by the time I get home but at least if it stops raining I'll be happy. :)
Have a great day everyone!

Yes. Three men died that day. It was a shocker. I actually saw one of the men go down. I was between miles 11 and 12 and the ambulances were already there for the first guy who fell. And, then the second one fell very close. It was the first death in the Detroit Marathon since 1994. The course is actually fairly flat. The hills are mostly in miles 7 - 12. The weather was gorgeous. I'm looking forward to seeing what made those men die. Two of them were young - 26 and 32. It's just heartbreaking.
This was Jennifer's post from the "doing the Donald" thread - a support group for the 1/2 milers running the Half in 2010 thread... just awful!
Carrie Good luck to you!! I'm only half hiding! I'm trying to get over the fear and the panic I've gotten the last 2 times I went out to practice - my mind is just stupid!!
Tina :welcome: I think Disney does an AWESOME job for the Half - every mile there are volunteers out there playing music, or entertaining - so much so you dont even miss the headphones/ipods!! And the people that volunteer to man the water stations do a FABULOUS JOB!! ;)
Like others have stated to increase speed just takes getting stronger - to get stronger you have to work at it!! DH works on speed every now and again - but he's in good shape! When he works on speed, he comes back DRENCHED!!
The weather is great now, and its supposed to be fabulous later - I'm going to try and get 2 miles in!!! It surely would help if I could enjoy it, and look at it as an enjoyment, instead of a punishment!

Hi everyone! Just quickly popping in - did some speedwork at the track yesterday. I did one lap at 5K pace and thought it would be fun to see how fast I could go if I just went all out. I got in one lap at 8:30, one at 8:11 and my fastest was 7:47! Now how do I keep up that pace for 13 miles :D I also did 3 miles this morning at a much easier pace...
Sandy - I'm like that sometimes too - 6 miles will be a piece of cake but I'll really struggle with a short 3 miles! How did you do with the 2 miles?
Carrie - I like the idea of three trips better than a bonus medal too :) Which did you like better - the Princess Half or the January races?
Make it a great day everyone!

Vicky - Hard to say. They did an awesoem job with Princess. I went there practically screaming "I ain't no sitnkin' princess". Was bummed that the Minnie was gone. Only went to eb with some firends. Well, I wanted ot eb a princess that wekend. A lot of nice touches. However, the on course characters were not my fave, because I was not a Princess girl. SO, if I had to pick. I'd pick January. Kara- Glad the trip went well. Getting a run in at WDW is a lot of fun. I think there are more runs I enjoy there than restaurants at this point.
Bounceliketigger- Welcome to the boards. Glad you were able to stay inspired and push through the setbacks. Good luck at the ToT run.
Tina- Welcome. The short answer for how to get faster and gain endurance is to put in the miles. Long slow runs will build endurance while short fast runs will build speed. Eventually the long slow runs will get faster and the short fast runs will get slower. It takes time and patience. You don't want to go too far too fast because it is hard to get the miles in when you are laid up nursing an injury. I like the 10% rule. It is a two parter and goes a bit like this:
Don't increase your weekly mileage by more then 10% form week to week. Ran 10 miles this week, run 11 next.
Don't increase the distance of your furthest run by more than 10%. Longest run 5 miles? Next one should be 5.5.
As you get more experience these rules are less rigid but for a beginner I would stick to them.
Dale- I read about the deaths and was surprised. I would have been less surprised if it was a hot race like Chicago a couple of years ago but it wasn't that warm. It's always sad when someone dies at an event like that. It goes from a wonderful accomplishment to sadness.
Vicky- Ah yes, speedwork. Nothing more fun than 400m or 200m repeats in a circle...except perhaps a strategic ball pein hammer blow to the cranium.
As for me, I am leaving work at noon tomorrow to head to Niagara Falls for my first attempt at 26.2. My miles are a bit lower than I would have liked this month but life and Cleveland weather has just gotten in the way. I am confident I will finish as long as this little cold I have been fighting doesn't get too bad. If it does I will have to slow down but I plan on finishing no matter how slow the times are.
MouseDogMom
10-22-2009, 08:56 PM
Frank - Have a great race in Niagara Falls. I'm sure you'll do fine, even though your mileage isn't what you'd hoped for. Sometimes that's a good thing!
Vicky - Strangely enough, I'm finding that I really enjoy speedwork on the track. I'm nowhere near a 7:47 mile yet, but the times keep getting faster than I ever imagined they could.
Bounceliketigger - :welcome: It sounds like you're doing a really good schedule for right now. Frank's suggestion is a good one. Be very careful about adding mileage too fast. That's a sure way to get injured, so take it slow. I run with a local Galloway group, and they suggest two mid-week runs in addition to the weekly long run. You're pretty much doing that already.
Tina - :welcome: What Frank said. Work on the endurance and miles first, then the speed. Don't try to do both at one time in the beginning.
Dale - Our Galloway director had some interesting observations on the Detroit marathon. He's from Detroit, and has run that marathon 4 times. He posted a list of rules/recommendations which I'm going to share:
1. Don't forget that we are in this for fun, comraderie and then accomplishment. Pushing yourself unnecessarily is not fun and your friends shouldn't let you do it.
2. Always carry your own water and essentials. ALWAYS!!! There is no way that carrying water is going to slow you down!
3. Partner up on race day - there is safety in numbers and when you partner with someone, you can keep an eye on each other while encouraging each other to the finish line. All my most memorable and enjoyable races are the ones I ran with others.
3. Listen to your doctor and your body. Every single one of you should be getting annual physicals, whether you are 15 or 50 or 80! If you aren't feeling well during or after a run or race - seek assistance. I'll admit I ran a dangerous race this year in Nashville (yes, a runner died that day too!) when the temperatures were in the high 80's - but hydration, sodium supplements and the buddy system kept me and my partner safe.
4. There are times when bailing from a training run or a race is the smart thing to do. Also, always carry ID with you along with any pertinent medical info. This can save your life.
5. While I encourage the pursuit of PR's - don't let that be your only goal on race day.....Set of goal of making a friend, or helping someone or enjoying the race course. Running is rewarding in so many ways - Discover the true joys of running and do it safely !!!
As for me - skipped my speedwork Monday, ran 5 miles Wednesday, doing 10 on Saturday. Am battling trying to wear contacts again so that running will be easier than dealing with glasses in the rain, the sweat, or needing the prescription sunglasses to be able to see. It's much harder than it was when I was 20 years younger!

Thanks for the encouragement & great tips!

Jackie
Jackie,
Thanks for the welcome, encouragement & advice. Which I had taken that advice when I started. I guess I'm a competitive gal & of course did too much too fast. The result, strain after strain, injury after injury. But I think I've learned my lesson! Who knows, if the TOT goes well, maybe I'll decide to be a "Princess" in March!
Thanks again! Hope to meet some of you WISHers on Saturday!

Hi all,
Been delinquent for a while....RFTT took me to WDW for a few days and then just came back from MA (where there was snow and 70 degree weather within a few days of one antoher!) Have been a slug while gone and now have to make up for it by cramming a few runs in a short time.
Welcome to the newbies! good luck in your training and we hope to meet you at an upcoming Disney race.
Vicky WTG on the speedwork. It is a standard part of my race training--I use the FIRST plans. (www.furman.edu/first). You might want to check out one of the plans/their philosophy just to get an idea of how they use speedwork--give you an idea of how you might incorporate it into your workout, and what it might mean for race pacing. Of course, it isn't intended to be your race pace, but depending ont the race length would be 1-2 minutes faster. For example, when I was doing their 5k plan, I did some intervals (short!) as fast as 7:06, and my best 5k w race results as 7:50 mpm. For the marathon plan I have, I am doing intervals at 7:30 (even 1 mile repeats!), based on a planned race pace of 9:00 (not that I expect to do that pace, but at least I am trying to train for it!)
Anyway...better go run!

Hi everyone! Just popping in to wish everyone a good weekend :)
Frank - Good luck at Niagara Falls this weekend! That looks like a fun race!
Carrie - I'm not really into the princesses either but would like to check out the race one year. I wish they would have kept Minnie, I love going in May.
Jackie - Great tips! I especially like #5 :)
Maura - How was the weather for RFTT? I was there the week before and it was incredibly hot and humid - even early in the morning, there was never really a break in the humidity. Thanks for the link! I'm heading over to check it out - I would love to work my way to a 9:00 m/m pace for the 1/2 in January but am not sure how realistic that would be. I'm just trying to get as close to 2:00 as possible. Btw, that's a fantastic pace for a 5K!!
AFM - It's a rest day today but I'm planning to run 3 and 5 milers this weekend! Other than that, not much else is planned.
Make it a great one!

Vicky - A bunch of us are doing our speedwork based on Yasso 800's. You may want to check out this article from RW. http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-244-255-624-0,00.html# The workout is amazingly simple, but easy to keep up with. I'm seeing results at least from week to week. I won't know until after November 14th if it really works in the marathon!
#5 is what got me through the marathon last year. After having a fairly miserable half in 2008 after I finished alone, I decided to just have fun in '09. I was so much less tired and happier when I crossed the finish line, even though I'd done twice the distance!
Maura - Welcome back!

Happy Friday everyone!
Welcome Shan! I am going to be at the Princess. I'm also not into princesses, but wasn't able to register for the 1/2 in January, so this was my way of going for the Coast to Coast medal...though we are also going to register for the new 1/2 in October, so I guess I'm just making excuses to run at WDW! :thumbsup2
Frank - Good luck in Niagra on your full marathon!!
Jackie - thanks for posting those tips as a great reminder...I myself am questioning whether I am going to be able to do the 1/2 next weekend that I signed up for. DH and I both ended up with a nasty cold during our trip to WDW, and both of us are still really feeling it in the chest. I'm going to test myself this weekend on a planned 8-miler, but will quit if it feels bad. That will tell me if I can do the 1/2 next weekend or not. As for the contacts, I always wear mine for long training days and race day. Just seems easier, as you said, than dealing with the percription glasses, blah blah blah...
Have a great weekend everyone!

Hope the weekend is going well so far for everyone! Got out for a 5.3 mile run this morning. I started off my run fuming a little bit about the NY Times article (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/23/sports/23marathon.html?em) about plodders. Got to the first mile and realized that I had run it in 9:40 mins ... Continued on and saw another runner ahead of me and decided to try and catch up to him. I passed him and then he cut a corner and passed me. I didn't really get that since he wasn't going that fast to begin with but it worked out since I was able to pace him for most of my run. Finished with a pace of 9:45 m/m - not bad (for me anyway) :)
Kara - pixiedust: for you and DH! Hope you get for your race next weekend!
Jackie - Will give the Yasso 800s a try the next time I'm at the track. Thanks for the link!
Maura - Think I might pick up the Run Less, Run Faster book that's referenced on the site. I like the Tuesday Track Plan because it uses a variety of running - is that the one you use as well?
Ok that's all for me! Will get out for a 3 miler tomorrow morning - Have a great day everyone!

thanks Vicky, we are just trying to play it safe. There was an article in our paper this morning about how 7 runners have died during events in the last two months, two of them here in our area at the San Jose Rock and Roll 1/2. Still no word on why, but very strange anyway.
Yay for a bit of motivation this morning on your run though, even if some of it was not positive. At least you turned the energy to positive!
Walked the pup 2 miles, and have a 2 mile walk for Light the Night tonight, which is a fund raiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. My company is a big fund raiser for this cause, and it's a really fun event. My company even sponsors a little pre-event thing at a local bar, with drinks and food. That's the extent of my exercise for today...
Enjoy the weekend everyone. It's beautiful here, almost 78.

Got in two runs yesterday and today---first time I have run on consecutive days in ??? maybe ever. Felt okay-although after waiting 4 hours after lunch to run, you'd think the pizza I had for lunch would not be a factor--not so!
Day off tomorrow and then long run on Monday.
Vicky I just use the plans for specific race distances and follow what it lays out for the speedwork. I borrowed the book from the library and xeroxed the pace charts--the training plans and everything else seem to be online.

Hi Everyone - I just posted this on the Rebel Alliance board, but thought I would share it here too. I have to tell on myself and my silliness.
Here's a funny story - yesterday i did a 5k that i have walked with my friends for 6 years. I planned to do the 5k as a training run, and run back to get them for the last mile to meet my 4 miles. Well, we got there 20 minutes late and missed going off with everyone else. Oh well, it's for charity and I'm not doing this for time. So I go and start to do the course, about a mile in i realize they reversed the course this year and the runners are coming at me. :scared1: Oh well - I continued on my backwards journey, met up with my friends about 2.5 in and walked back with them to the end. Not how what I had imagined. We kind of just laughed at the whole thing. Everything was going wrong, ipod was skipping, garmin was not picking up a satellite and there's me running the wrong way. Oy!
Hope everyone has a great week! Try not to run backwards. :rotfl:

Hi Wishers! I need some advice. I've been collecting for TnT with the intention of completing the full in January. I'm not making the progress I thought I would and I am seriously doubting my ability to finish the fill in the required time. I have to submit my paperwork ASAP and am thinking about switching to the half. I've done 2 half marathons and I could take this opportunity to improve my time and get a PR. I feel guilty since my fundraising has been on the premise that I would be doing the full. I'm sure if I started by saying I was going to so the half, people would have still been impressed though.
What does everyone think? Is it wrong for me to switch to the half at this point? I want to finish the race, still be able to enjoy myself at the race weekend, and I still will be raising the same amount of money, all still going to the same cause.
FireDancer

Megan- I don't think it is wrong to switch to the half. I am not sure if you are allowed though since it is full. I would think they would let someone downgrade but I would check with Disney Endurance first.
Were you planning to run, jog, or walk the full? If you were planning to run or jog it would you be able to walk it instead? In the end the decision has to be what you feel comfortable doing. If you feel the 26.2 is too long for your training even at a walk then I would rather enjoy the half than suffer through and maybe get swept in the full. I could also understand wanting to hit a goal in the half as opposed to just wander through the full if you had goals set.
AFM, I managed to finish my first full marathon so now I can put that 26.2 sticker on the car. If anyone is interested I posted a review on the Kudos board (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2314499&page=2).

Hi everyone! I took Sunday and today off from running. I had some pain in my Achilles (turns out it was my soleus muscle). I think I probably did something during my Saturday run. I had my PT check it out last night and he said it was just a tweak and I should be good to go :) Yay! He said if it was a tear of the Achilles, I'd definitely know (and not be walking very well either).
Kara - Wish I had your weather!
Maura - Count me in as someone who has to run on an empty stomach or at least very bland food. Until I started running, I never realized how long it takes some food to digest.
Frank - Congrats on your first marathon! :) I'm off to read your race report. For some reason, I've always thought you had done a marathon before.
Megan - I don't think there's anything wrong with switching to a half. January will be my 5th 1/2 and I think I'll be ready for my first full in 2011. I agree with Frank that it's something that you want to enjoy and not have to worry about being swept or not finishing. I hope you're able to switch :)

Thanks Vicky and Frank. Switching between the 2 should not be a problem since TNT has so many participants. Once my forms are filled out, I can't switch, but until then, I should be okay.

I'm shooting for a 2:36 half marathon time, which would be about a 5:20 marathon time. If I understand this correctly, I should try to run 800 yds in 5 minutes, 20 seconds then walk for 5 minutes, 20 seconds, and repeat. Right? I need to start doing some speedwork and this seems like an easier way to start.

That's how it works. It seems almost too simple, but that's what makes it such an easy plan. I actually found the 5:20 walk to be too long after the first week, so what I'm doing is running the 800, and then doing the walk for either 2 or 3 minutes. The basic idea is to recover between the run segments. My thinking was that his plan is based on someone who's actually running at a good pace, so they're jogging the recovery segment. Since I'm running at what their recovery pace is, my walk doesn't need to be as long. (My explanation is probably entirely too confusing, but that's how I justified the way I ran mine!)

More energy, more of my fave characters adn more WISHers.
Hi Carrie,
I think we may have met briefly at the TOT?
Anyway, I'm with you on the princess thing, but being that the 1/2 in Jan is full, I think I'm going to try it anyway. Do you think it's worth it, as fun as the night race? I had such a blast at the TOT! It didn't even feel like 8 miles (until after riding the TOT that is....NOT a good idea..ugh.)

Being this is going to be my first 1/2 marathon, what do you folks carry with you while running/walking? Gel packs, blocks, energy bars, water? Do you actually shed clothes:scared1: as you and/or the temperature warms up? :confused3 All advice is welcomed. That is my favorite moderate resort. I know a lot of people think it is too big and full of conventioneers but I really like the colonial Mexico theme and Pepper Market is great. The other restaurants there, Rix Lounge and Maya Grill, are terrible so don't waste your time or money.

Hi everyone! I had some pain in my soleus muscle again yesterday so I skipped my 3 miler this morning. I'm going to have my PT look at it again tonight. It feels okay now and only seems to be aggravated when I wear heels so I'm going to stick to flats next week and see if that makes a difference. Luckily (sort of), our office is moving so it will pretty much be a jeans and t-shirt week anyway. That will make it easier to wear sneakers.
Dale - I bring a throw away shirt to wear at the Disney races. I remember reading that the clothing is picked up, washed and given to charity. As far as carrying stuff - I bring a gel pack with me and my camera. I seem to remember gels being given out on the 1/2 course just around the Car Care Center.
Megan - We're at the Polynesian. We managed to get in on the 4/3 deal so it worked out :)
Frank - I liked CS! I really liked their jogging trail around the lake and their quiet pool with the lanes. I didn't really care for the restaurants though.
Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Usually when I dont post - it means I've gone into hiding... :sad2:
but I'm starting again! :yay:
I did 5 miles thursday and I'm hoping to get out today - the weather is changing....
I also go to Goodwill and buy some $3 or less "throwaway" clothes (and someone posted the chat transcript in the Princess Thread - they confirmed they pick up the clothes, wash them, and donate them to charity!) - you just never know the weather - you get up and at the start at 4am! :scared1: So a sweatshirt really helps - I also know the weather is so variable! I bought the hand warmers and $1 gloves (stretch ones Walgreens carry them...)
but in '08 it was HUMID and hot, and no extra clothes were needed!! So I put them in the check bagged - for "next time"
We're at Beach Club Villas :dance3:
At the Expo they have LOTS of things to buy - I like the jelly beans, and knox blox type aides - the gel blox I chew when I get water - 1 or 2 whether I think I need it or not!!

So Bunnyfoo, what is the soleus muscle?
I have neverendingly sore inner calves--I can feel the exact muscle band that just won't loosen up.
Before the TOT I had a massage & the therapist (Pat @ Beach Club--You are AWESOME) really picked up on exactly the problem. It really helped with the run. But now guess what--less than a week after & they are tight & sore as can be! Stretching 15-30 min. before & after & have only done 2, 3 mi. runs this week!
Any suggestions?

Hey everyone! Got out for a 3 miler this morning - I did my route backwards so it would be a bit easier and ran it slower than I normally would have for the first 2 miles. Nice weather - I still wore my shorts even though I saw other runners wearing tights and jackets. I saw one of my neighbours and he was out in a tshirt and shorts too :)
Jeff - :wave2: Are you getting ready for the Honolulu marathon? Btw, got my light from RoadID! It's really cool! Really bright!
Sandy - WTG on your 5 miler!! I've got my throw away shirt as well. Last year, I found it a bit chilly before the race. I wore my jacket from the hotel to the bag check. I really wished I had brought throw away gloves. My hands got really cold and it felt uncomfortable for the first 3 miles.
bounceliketigger - The soleus is the muscle in between your calf and Achilles. In the summer, I had a calf cramp the night before my 15K. I alternated between ice and heat packs and did a lot of stretching. That really helped.
wdwprncess77 - Your backwards 5K made me laugh! That sounds like something I would have done myself :)
Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Vicky Thanks on the update! and :woohoo: on your run - now is that runnning backwards, or was that doing the route backwards!! :cutie:
The throwaway gloves are easy to pack!! I'm thinking if FL weather shows up in the 40's or 50's in the night time - I may even pack those hand warmers!! I picked up a zipper throwaway jacket - its so hard to predict the weather 2 months in advance!!
DH is still running in shorts - and the longsleeved WDW Marathon shirt today - it feels warmer when the sun is shining!! I just look plain silly all bundled up!! then you start peeling the layers!
