If our "home base" is DL, which of these can we get to easily from there?
LaBrea Tar Pits
Catalina Island
Hollywood et al (ElCapitan, Grauman, etc)
Huntington Beach
Palm Springs with the air tram

If these don't work, can you recommend sites that East Coasters can get to from DL? I have been reading this board periodically for a few weeks now, and am really trying to get to the nitty gritty planning for our trip next July. Thank you all so much fro the valuable information you have provided!:)

Tar pits, Hollywood, Griffith Park, and Universal Studios are in the same general area, so that would be doable. Catalina would be a different trip (maybe you'll experience a Catalina eddy), perhaps combined with Huntington Beach. Palm Springs is off in a different direction. San Diego off to the south. Each of those would be separate day trips. Most TV tapings would be in hiatus, but Leno and Conan have daily tapings. Into baseball at all?

what is a Catalina eddy? I was thinking of actually spending 1 night on the Island. Any hotel recomendations? Will probably spend a few nights at another hotel further north for those things - Palm Springs? BASEBALL - are you kidding?!?!?! The World Series Champion Phillies are our home team:banana: I checked their schedule for next year and they are not playing anywhere near there during our planned stay. But we may hit one of your teams just to say we were at a stadium. One better than the other? Thanks again:)

A Catalina eddy is a circulating current in the channel between the mainland and Catalina Island. I mention it because you may recall that name from one of the counter service places in DHS - Catalina Eddie's.

We've never stayed overnight on Catalina - can't help there.

Baseball - of course Angel Stadium is much closer to DL and it's a nice stadium, but it will probably boil down to which team is in town when you're in SoCal. The schedules are available now - Angels (http://losangeles.angels.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=ana&m=7&y=2010) Dodgers (http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=la&m=7&y=2010) Maybe you'll be here during the All Star Game?

Hi subbing in... from Jersey too and heading to the LA to San Diego area the end of July 10 too! I've never been to CA so this is exciting.. 4 trips this year to WDW so I MUST stop in and at least see disneyland. Have you booked any hotels yet? I'm looking at an Embassy Suites near Disneyland.. I was hoping to avoid the higher costs for the in park hotel since my husband does not "get" the magic so we will only be stopping in to Disney for one short day. Oh well... at least I can say I saw some of it! lol...
