I'm new to all this, trying to arrange our first cruise.

We are a family of 5 (3 younger kids 7,4,2). Tried booking a cat 3 or 2 cat 10's on the 7-day western cruise for Jan 4 2002 - nothing available.

Instead I was offered a 1 BR suite the week of Jan 11 on a 7-day Eastern caribbean for ~$4300. What do you all think?

Mark, I'm a little confused, a Cat. 3 IS a 1-bedroom suite. I know you can't get a Cat. 3 for about $4800; did you mean a Cat. 4 Family Stateroom?

i think that sounds pretty darn reasonable. we went last january 4th, and prior to 9/11, the price for two adults and one child in a CAT 4 was just a few dollars shy of 4 grand. We were lucky though because we got a $1200 refund prior to sailing because prices had dropped...

Yes I meant cat 4 family room with veranda

I'd go for it. We are spending quite a bit more for our cruise (albeit, it is during T-giving week so I knew we'd pay a premium) and we are only in Cat. 6 with 2 adults & 1 child.

Mark, that is a GOOD price for a Cat. 4! I agree, I think I'd go for the Eastern this time if that will work in your schedule! :D

Sorry I'm still confusing you.

I had asked for a cat 4 family room for the western route Jan 4 but they were sold out.

The agent though offered me a cat 3 1 BR suite for $4300 for the week of Jan 11 on the 7-day eastern cruise. She said this is less than a cat 4 or 2 cat 10's for the week of Jan 4, were any available(which there are not). I guess maybe the eastern route is not as expensive as the western, and the week of jan 11 must be cheaper than the Jan 4 week.

If $4300 is a good deal for a cat 4 family deluxe, then it sounds like it must be a very good deal for a cat 3 1 BR suite.

If you miss out on that deal, you will regret it forever. I passed up on something like that last winter and I am still kicking myself from here to the moon.

The listed price for the category 3 is $3,000 to $3800 per person for the first 2 people. If you were offered that as a total price for a category 3 suite then you are a VERY lucky person!:) You won't find a price like that for conceirge service rooms again.

The category 4 that you also mentioned is kind of like a regular verandah room, just a little bigger. That is about the price I'd expect for one of those rooms for a family of 5.
