We have friends who live in the area and will be joining us one day in the parks. We're contemplating whether or not to get the DDP, but it looks like we'll have a TS credit each (total of 2) leftover at the end of our trip. Am I correct in understanding that we cannot pay for our friends' meals using our leftover credits?

Yes, the stated rules of the plan (printed in Disney's plan brochures) is that dining credits can be used to buy meals only for the persons who purchased the credits.
