I am new to all this so l'm sorry to show my ignorance but when someone types "BUMP" or "BUMPED" what do they mean?

If you "Bump" a thread, it goes back up to the top of the board.

It also allows you to personally get comments to your e-mail concerning the topic, which you may be interested in.

yep, "back to the top" or "BTTT" are also used for the same purpose.
