A Voyage of Firsts! The WONDERful Journey North: Los Angeles to Vancouver to Alaska, April 27th & May 3rd, 2011.

What a wonderful opportunity, the prospect of participating in part of something for which there can only be one first time, the voyage of the Disney Wonder from Los Angeles to Vancouver, and the opportunity to experience the that journey.

There will be other sailings northward up the Pacific coast, but there can be only one first voyage, and only one opportunity to sail on any part of it.

Welcome aboard.

Ah, a Voyage of Firsts!!! It sounds Wonder-ful... :cloud9: Tho' I confess initially I misread it as a Voyage of Fists which was a slight worry...

And in the spirit of firsts - may I present Richard's debut dinner outfit!!!

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s84/cheztaylor/Cruise2011/DSCF2016.jpg

I think it captures quintessential Disney and redefines Cruise Casual...

Richard is obviously a man of great taste. Where did he find the matching trousers? (I'll avoid the use of the word pants).

Ssssh don't tell anyone, but they were an Disney Prime Outlet special - $12 I believe. As he already had the shirt from our 2007 cruise, it was an outfit just waiting to be thrown together... :rolleyes1

Any guesses on what special nights there will be on this journey? Will they do Pirates of the Pacific?:confused3

Speaking of firsts...

I believe the Wonder will be flying the Canadian Flag for the first time. I think.

I know it is customary for a vessel sailing into a foreign port to be flying the flag from where it is registered (The Bahamas) and the flag of the port into which it is sailing. I can't remember if the Disney ships flew both the US and Bahamian flags in the past or if they added the Aruban and the Mexican flags for the PC cruise.

But if they do, then that will be interesting to me to see the good ol' maple leaf on the Wonder! Yeah I'm patriotic for my nation, sorry.

No I don't.

The title is clear enough.

- There are people who are embarking on 4/27 and disembarking on 5/3.

- There are people embarking on 5/3 and disembarking on 5/10.

- And finally, there are people embarking on 4/27 and disembarking on 5/10.

OH no no no....one performance will be plenty. We'll do it the first week so that Kaylee and Lisa W. and Lisa/calmom can join us. Actually, we may make it a private party by invitation only. So we should not be talking about it in general. I have to think about it and see how it develops.

Clothing for cooler temperatures tends to be bulkier and take up more space.

It's going to be very challenging to have a productive dialogue about the journey on two threads. To me this journey is no different than steamship voyages of days gone by, where you had various ports of call with passengers embarking and disembarking.

Right now I think there should be 2 cocktail mixers, one at the start, and after Vancouver to welcome all the recent boarders.

I was thinking about that too. Formal attire will have to be of the winter variety not the summer kind. It's all going to be different. Many things will need to be shopped for and acquired. This will be a true challenge.:wizard:

Absolutely! And with the reduction in baggage allowances, it'll be tougher than ever!!! Maybe we should travel in as much as we can possibly wear at one time...?

Regarding packing, I had the brilliant idea of those packing bags that you hook up to a vacuum cleaner to suck out the air and compress everything. Then I realized that that would only work one way, not unless I also packed our vacuum cleaner to suck out the air for the return trip.

And now I must love you and leave you as I'm off to Paris in a couple of hours and I need to get ready!!! Richard and I are meeting at 7pm in the champagne bar at the St Pancras station - romantic, huh?!! Then we're catching the late train and having dinner onboard... :cloud9:

Anyway, I'll be back on Sunday afternoon so will catch up then...
A bientot...

That sounds so horrible. Sukie and I however are so lucky. In the amount of time it takes you and Richard to get to Paris, we can get to Detroit. I would must rather stroll the boulevards of scenic Detroit any day over those of Paris.

They have pink UGGs!

I know they have purple, as Miss Molly had those, and if there is purple there must be PINK :lovestruc

Okay, the only news in the other threads is they are setting up a separate webpage which will be the roster of the cruises, and pictures are welcome to be submitted to BobandLee in any format!

(how's that, Nan? :goodvibes)

Good work, you're hired. The pay, not so much. The hours, not so good. The benefits, priceless friendships

Packing is going to be a bit of a challenge for this trip what with weight restrictions and all.

Clothing for cooler temperatures tends to be bulkier and take up more space.

Layers... although you will look like the Michelin man in plaid... :rotfl2:

It's going to be very challenging to have a productive dialogue about the journey on two threads. To me this journey is no different than steamship voyages of days gone by, where you had various ports of call with passengers embarking and disembarking.

Right now I think there should be 2 cocktail mixers, one at the start, and after Vancouver to welcome all the recent boarders.

sure... make us drink twice!!! :thumbsup2

I was thinking about that too. Formal attire will have to be of the winter variety not the summer kind. It's all going to be different. Many things will need to be shopped for and acquired. This will be a true challenge.:wizard:

Another excuse to go shopping??? :worship: :worship:

I would agree. Most things should be duplicated. (The Champagne Girls can only be done once however....way too expensive to do it twice.)

:cutie:

Deb... (this one is about Champagne girls...) I think we should make it a private affair and possibly just past champagne girls... there will be alot of us anyway and we don't need the education (if we can't figure out by now theres bubbles in our wine...:rotfl: :rotfl:) ... we just need to drink... :lovestruc

&&&& we're gonna have to do it the first week... more sea days than when we actually hit Alaska...

Got it! Skip the Sommelier, bring the bubbly, more drinking and less education....definitely the first week because we have some Thieves...or the Original Champagne Girls...attending that won't be onboard the second week.

And I think it's way too early to make that determination. If we do a private party we'll probably do it at Palos. If it's going to include all ladies interested in attending, it will be bigger and will be held in Sessions or Diversions....time will tell....we'll know when we get there.

Ok a question for our Canadian friends what to put on the must do list for Vancouver?

Not sure....Ken and Shannon will let us know...or Kaylee.

Or cuzzin Mike will let us know...he lives in Seattle but worked in Vancouver.

Speaking of cuz's...I saw on facebook that Donna is going to Napa and Somona and San Fran with Frank and another couple. They're drinking wine all week. Lucky girl. I asked her to let me know which one she likes the most. We can do it with a DISer group on the San Fran overnight in 2011.:thumbsup2

Donna is my first cousin that I grew up with. She was my birthday present when I turned 11. All I wanted was a girl and my Aunt had her on my birthday and she grew up around the corner. We're the only girls in our generation. Donna has the only girl, Julie, in the next generation. There's a lot of boys in my family. Me, Donna and Julie all love dance and me and Donna love wine too....she was my maid of honor and she got me soooooooo sick on champagne during John's bachelor party....but that's another story. We're very close. She's a nurse on Long Island.

not a lot of time, but just wanted to let you know, if you booked the LA-Repo online on the morning of Sept 28th, you're reservation may be messed up.

There was a computer glitch and it was only charging $200 instead of $250 per person. So we got our reservation confirmation that we had paid our deposit in full, but now online it shows that we still owe some of the deposit. I went looking for the problem, because somebody posted about it in a thread.

Our deposits would have been lost tomorrow. But I've talked to Disney, and was told they've fixed ours, but its still not showing up correctly online. So I'll be phoning again tonight if its not fixed to make sure its all okay.

Granville island is nice to check out. There's a little brewery, there's some cute little artisan type places.

Capilano suspension bridge is a nice tourist attraction.

Robson street is known for shopping (it doesn't thrill me).

Stanley park is gorgeous, see some big old trees, see some totem poles, go to the aquarium.

My plan/dream (if everything alligns correctly :rotfl:) is to do a little before & a little after. Flying in the 23rd (probably) and home the 13th or 14th.

I've never been to San Diego so thinking of flying in there, doing things there (not sure what), driving up the cost - doing the Queen Mary (not sure about spending the night there, tho) and ending up near the pier (there's a Doubletree w/in 1 mile of the pier & they have free shuttle w/in a 5 mile radius plus an Enterprise car rental on site).

After the cruise I figure I'll look around either Vancouver or Seattle (or a little of both)....costwise it'll more than likely be less $ to fly out of Seattle.

I think I can swing it w/ work but must keep fingers crossed :lmao:

I'm interested in the hotel for the night before. We are flying in on the 26th.

Theoretically, I could fly out the evening of the 24th (Passover will be over at sundown) and do the 25th in DL.

But I KNOW we are going to need a hotel for the night of the 26th.

I checked the rates for the doubletree and got a price of $159.99 for one room. Then I checked Staybridge Suites in Torrance, where we stayed after the PC cruise. I can get a 1BR suite for $96.99. I can take car service to the port....it's not far from there. I remember me and John checked in and then got the call from the port that they found our bag....the one with cozy and webster in it....and they closed the office in 20 minutes or something.....but we had to get there fast. We followed the GPS and I looked on the map. We made it in time. Besides, I like the area.

We're only going to do one night beforehand. We did it already after the PC. John would rather spend our available time in Seattle/Vancouver after the cruise....so that's our plan.

Anyone want to stay at Staybridge Suites with us in Torrence. We can book car service to the port. It's a great area and we can do dinner the night before on the water in Rodondo Beach.

Monica and Deb, count me in too please :flower3: If I end up arriving earlier for 2 or 3 nights I will try to find a place near DL first, then join everyone for the night before the cruise:thumbsup2 I have never been to DL! Does anyone know of a good place close by that doesn't cost quite as much as the disney hotels? I love your plan too Michelle...but need to budget this so I can add days on at the end of the cruise too.

John found Virgin America flights that go from JFK to LAX or to San Diego one way starting at $199/pp. Depending on how much time John can get off, we might do two nights in San Diego first. John said, I don't want to do LA...we did it before and I don't like Hollywood. Of course, I love LA and Hollywood. But at least we did it once.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Kinda early for us to plan, but Greg and I would be interested in group rates somewhere at least 1 or 2 days before the cruise, and possibly after the cruise too. It will still be slightly cool here, so it would be nice to get warm before heading into even colder weather :goodvibes Vicki

Monica, I love your plan too! I hope you can make it work :thumbsup2 If you want company for a day in Vancouver let me know! If Sara and Trevor do end up sailing with me, I'm pretty sure they would have to fly straight home as they don't have as much vacation time as I do. I would still plan on staying for a day or two.

I do believe that Ian and Sukie liked the Howard Johnsons by DL and I know that some of our friends have gotten good deals off of either priceline or hotwire for DL hotels...

This is really too far away for me to think about. I think it's over 570 days away and who knows what can happen between then and now. I'm a bit surprised that I've already had to do some planning for Sukie's daughter and grand son's visit in Oct 2010!

There's now a DVC resort at the Grand California, but the points per night are pretty high. I would probably not "waste" points by staying there.

When we were out there to get married, I really didn't see any advantage at all to staying on property. It's not at all like WDW.

We stayed at the Howard Johnson's and really liked it. It was about a 5 minute walk to DL, 15 or 20 minutes if really try to walk slowly.

Plus it was cheap (by comparison) a big plus in my book.

If we were at DL before the cruise we'd stay there or perhaps the Candy Cane Inn.

I sort of look at the Disney Hotels there as a complete waste of good money, considering I won't even "waste" points.

I'd rather have the money to spend on other stuff.

Now this is a completely different opinion I have to WDW, where I think there is a huge difference by staying on property.

Hello everyone!!! I'm back, live in my living room and enjoying what remains of the weekend... Glad to see we're thinking up some pre/post cruise plans already - of course, I haven't already worked out a detailed day-by-day itinerary - honest... :rolleyes1

...I've never been to San Diego so thinking of flying in there...
I was thinking about flying into San Diego, Monica - I'd love to see the zoo and Hotel del Coronado - BUT it all depends on the flights. I'm crossing fingers and hoping we can get a couple of heftily discounted fares with Virgin Atlantic using airmiles as Richard has loads and they only fly into Los Angeles so, if they're available, that'll make the decision for us.

...doing the Queen Mary (not sure about spending the night there, tho)
We stayed here for 1 night before our Mexican Riviera cruise in 2008 - glad we did it (for the experience) but it was a little strange and rather pricy considering the accommodation...

Anyway, I think we'll fly out on April 22nd and spend 5 nights prior to the cruise either in LA/Anaheim OR San Diego OR a mix of the two... We will probably use DVC for a DL stay as I've reviewed our points situation and we have quite a few to use up before September 2011, so it makes sense for us... We'll have to fly back promptly following the end of the 1st cruise as I'm expecting exams to start shortly afterwards... :headache: :faint:

Karen,

Welcome home from Paris. WE had an all expense paid luxury trip to the supermarket this weekend. Aren't you jealous.

I'm going to be points poor in 2011 (I think) because of the family descending from the UK for a fortnight's stay in a 2-bedroom. Plus we get to play (shudder) grand dads!

Yes, the rumors are true; I am still alive and look to be booking the B2B from LA to Alaska. I have been waiting for this for awhile and with a little luck, I may even get my folks to join the boys and I on it! As usual life is keeping me very busy and off the boards for now, but hopefully things will slow down soon (not much chance). TinkRules always knows how to get in touch with me if something comes up. Boys are doing well, but Danny is having a hard time transitioning into a work program. I keep telling him he needs to work if he wants to go on DCL trips! Hope to be back on soon.

A different color for each outfit right? It's imperative that you match what what you're wearing. I was thinking about getting a pair of grey after the pink and tan would match my bag. We have to match our shoes with our bag. What colors do you have?

Ian, survival preparation has nothing to do with it...it's all about the fashion! Like matching your outfits with what you're drinking. It's so dashingly smart.

I am working on a pic for the cruise Ian. I haven't forgotten. I just haven't had a lot of time in front of the computer (at least the one with all the graphics on it) lately.

But here are some I did when we first booked and posted in one of the other threads for this cruise:

Can we do Mickey on a glacier with an Orca in the background....just leave the ship out this time and say something like the first to forge ahead to new territories....or something like that.

I know I am just dreaming right now...but I would love to turn this into a 3 week vacation :thumbsup2 I would really like to be able to arrive in LA a few days early so I could see some of the sights, and have a day at DL. I would also like to add a couple of days on at the end of the cruise to explore Vancouver! One has to keep dreaming, right?

Hi! First off...Ian, don't read this, I know it's way too early to plan but I can't help myself sometimes :upsidedow And yes, I will change my plans who knows how many times before this trip becomes a reality ;)

I was just looking at a 2011 calendar, and you all may know this already, but the weekend before this cruise is Easter! I didn't realize that, and it just might change my "plans" which are really just dreams anyway! I'm still doing the cruise, but, airfare might be awful on the weekend and DL will be a zoo, won't it :confused3 Any feedback on this would be appreciated. I may end up having to settle for arriving the day before? In any case, there's no way I can miss work the Saturday before.

This will also be the second time I spend Mother's Day on a cruise. I better start looking for a very special gift for my mom that year, since I'll be leaving her behind! I actually have asked my parents if they might be interested in cruising, but they don't seem to be! I know they'd love it, but they're really not interested in discussing it.

Ok here are a couple of maps of Vancouver for you to look and use at your leisure. i jsut scanned these in from a map we got one time in Vancouver.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4038/4482977097_de40f9fee9.jpg

The original file is 3400 x 2200 pixels but apparently flickr.com doesn't like things that big being uploaded so the largest stored on flickr is only 663x1024. Here is the link to Flickr's "large" size: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4038/4482977097_de40f9fee9_b.jpg

Here is another version of the map with some different stuff on it:
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4066/4483628776_1cdf53185c.jpg

Again here is the link to the Flickr "large" file: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4066/4483628776_1cdf53185c_b.jpg

If you want to have the actual full size map, let me know and I will see where I can put it for you to get. It is about 5.47 MB in size so it is quite large.

Hope these help with Vancouver...

Last time Monica and I communicated on this topic, we were looking at one night in Vancouver (to look around the city debarkation day), then taking the morning train to Seattle and staying one night there and flying home Thursday the 12th. Originally I only wanted to take 15 days off work, but will need an extra day to do this. (I can fly into LA after work on the 26th, so that's good)

I'm also stressing about money and the added expense at the end, but it pretty much looks like flying home from Seattle and an extra day balances out the the more expensive cost of flying home from Vancouver.

Perhaps I'll go research some more flight info and report back.

Thanks Jacks....this sounds very reasonable. John and I were thinking of adding one week.....4 days before in LA and 3 days after somewhere. We could easily do one night in Vancouver and two nights in Seattle. We would take the train with you. I have a cousin that lives in Seattle so I could visit with him during that extra day.

Let us know what you find when you look into the flight info. Thanks.

For me the difference between flying home from Seattle over Vancouver is only about $70 (based on current Orbits offerings). So I don't NEED to go to Seattle, but would do so to play longer with friends. ::yes::

The Amtrac train leaves at 6:40 in the morning! :scared1: It arrives in Seattle at 1105AM (makes about 5 stops) AND didn't show up as running on Wed 5/11. There is an Amtrac bus that leaves at 8:AM and goes non-stop to Seattle arriving at noon. ($37.50) Don't know which would be better for boarder crossing ease however. I know there is discussion about that on the Vancouver FAQ thread, but I haven't really been paying attention yet.

Added there is a PM train on Wed...5:45P gets into Seattle at 10:10PM $35. The train certainly seems like more FUN.

This, of course would mean more time in Vancouver and no time touring Seattle (which is fine with me).

It doesn't look like that early morning train shows up any day of the week in early May 2011 ??? :confused3

There is another possibility....we could rent a vehicle, maybe a van, and John could drive. I know he would be more comfortable behind the wheel of a car rather than riding on a train. Then we could leave when we wanted not on a set time schedule. And if we do the rental, it won't cost you guys anything extra. That's fine with us coz John would probably be happier this way.

I completely understand, but know that you and R will be very much missed. We'll have to plan some "on the boat" time besides dinner.;)

Vancouver is almost home for us, so we won't be joining the Seattle tour :(
But we'd be interested in playing a bit in Vancouver before we head north to go home :)

Vancouver is what I'm most interested in! :thumbsup2

I did a reply on the e-mail Deb sent asking folks to come here to talk about this. It's way easier to keep track of everyone's ideas and stuff here than in a bunch of e-mails!

Went back a read this thread:

Care to join me for the after part?? (you know if it weren't for Passover you'd be invited for the before part)
HOTEL NIGHT BEFORE - as we get closer & if there are enough people that want to stay at that Doubletree I'd be more than happy to employ my TA (me :rotfl2:) to book a group block so that maybe we can get a better rate.

Monica, still thinking of this, or is your heart set on the Queen Mary for the night before?

No. But I might... ;)

And in 1967 I was aged 4... :littleangel: What can I say, paisley was huge!!!

OMG HOW CUTE!

1967 was one of the best years of my life. Junior in high school, had the lead in two plays, 2nd year art, 2nd year Spanish and all the blasted math and science classes were over with! Had first year typing and shorthand...and a darn good thing, as those skills have kept me housed, fed and clothed for 40+ years!

Speaking of 'fed'...it's noon and I'm hungry.

I'm really not sure what we're going to do yet.
The problem for me is that Passover ends on Tuesday, 4/26 at sundown. So I really don't see us coming in early.

Now we will definitely fly out on the 26th for LA, probably taking the latest flight we can get so I don't have to take another day off from work.

That's my biggest problem with all of this --- work. This will take up 10 work days and am not sure what will be going on with work by this time, or where I will be working.

If I were to tack on extra time it would be at the end in Vancouver, but not more than 1 extra day.

I'm ok with blowing off Seattle and stay in Vancouver longer--cuz of the train schedule. I'm ok w/ driving to Seattle if we prefer that. Should be ok if we need to do 2 cars too (don't forget the crap we will be carting along with us). I plan on using miles for my ticket, so it should cost me the same flying out of Seattle or Vancouver.

RE: hotel the night before near the port.....I know a bunch of people will be staying at DL before the cruise. Depending on how many people are planning to NOT stay at DL - I can look at group rates either at that Doubletree that I mentioned before, or maybe at the Queen Mary ;)

(I may end up having dinner that night with good friends of mine from college)

Deb, here's some info recently posted on the Vancouver FAQ thread about car rentals between Vancouver/Seattle

According to the port's web site (http://www.portmetrovancouver.com/about/cruiseandtourism/transportationandparking.aspx):
"Rental car kiosks are only available at Canada Place. They include: Avis, Budget, and National. There are no rental car kiosks at Ballantyne. Passengers need to pre-arrange pick-up or drop-off with the rental company in advance."

Most major car companies have rental locations at the port, at a nearby hotel, or another downtown location (within a few blocks of the port). When you search for a car rental, just ensure that you specify the different pick-up (SEATAC airport?) and drop-off (999 Canada Place, Vancouver, BC or nearby) locations. Travelocity (http://travel.travelocity.com/car/CarRequest.do)'s car rental search tool is useful for finding companies that allow cross-boarder drop-offs (I can't comment on their rates).

Thanks Jacks....we would just do what we did in LA when we got off the PC cruise. I had a car waiting at the port that picked us up and brought us to LAX. We rented a car there and returned it to Las Vegas airport. I usually try to rent airport to airport.....more choices, less money. I already did an Orbitz search picking up at Vancouver airport and returning at Seattle airport. Cars are doable, but vans are out because they're too pricey.

I did, however, consider Monica's reminder that we're all going to have LOTS of luggage. Maybe we better take the train.:wizard:

I booked and paid for my return airfare yesterday. We're flying out of Seattle on Sat 5/14. So we'll have 4 nights in LA before the cruise and 4 nights in Van/Seattle after cruise. I have to wait another three weeks before I can book our flight into LA....the window is not open yet. We're flying Virgin America to the west coast and American Airlines home. For our PC cruise we flew home on a Continental Red Eye. We didn't want to do that again.

I already booked our hotel in LA. So now all I have to book is our car rental in LA and then finish the return bookings. I'm happy to say that I'm making progress.

OK folks.....I need some help here....I need to know everyone's plans for after the boat. Are we staying in Vancouver? For how long? Are we making our way to Seattle for our return flights? I'm just about ready to book air flights and need some input from my friends. I want to do what all the Thieves are doing....Kaz, that includes you!!!

Vancouver is almost home for us, so we won't be joining the Seattle tour :(

We got a room with a balcony facing the water. We love the neighborhood. Woody and Tracy live nearby. We stayed in Torrence, the next town over, after the PC cruise. Why don't you book it too. We'll have another minimeet before getting onboard.:cool1::cool1:

YES.....I DO I DO!!!

You book it and we'll follow. I would love to do 2 brunches. Or should I just book ours for the same time and date as you and then coordinate? If we have enough to do a group, let's do that.

We have enough to do TWO groups....per cruise.
