Mary,

Here is the link to our signature art. http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm202/nascar8820/alaska6.jpg

I changed the font just a little from the first one that you saw. I think this font is easier to see.

Anyone else is free to use it if they would like.:)

I love to plan! I went on a cruise to Alaska years ago, so I am trying to recall the best of each port. I am looking forward to finding out what excursions will be offered. Our fave from last time was a salmon bake in Ketchikan with gold panning . I was not brave enough for the glacier helicopter tour!

Glad to see I'm not the only planner in the group! Where do you have a timeshare? I picked up the book "Alaska by Cruise Ship". I've only taken quick looks at.

I'd love to hear about your trip. What ship were you one and what ports did you go to? I'm really thinking I'd like to try the glacier helicopter tour. I've only done a helicopter tour once and that was many many years ago in Hawaii but I loved it!

I don't think I've picked a most wanted yet. I'm excited just to see the Wonder sail in brand new waters. Having never been to Vancouver or any of the Alaskan ports I'm looking forward to it all! What are you looking forward to?

sorry guess i could have answered my own question huh. :lmao: having never been on the west coast i think i am looking forward to the new experiences. the ports not sure yet. i am really wanting to see the natural wildlife mostly. so may be sitting my but outside alot or camcording alot.

our home timeshare is in Kissimmee, Florida about 5 minutes from WDW. Vacation village at Parkway. we don't use it as often as we would like but i wish there were resorts closer to us. seems like we would have to travel 5 hrs min to get to any one resort. and most areas we have wanted to go there is no resorts in those areas. go figure.

I have numerous books but havent had a chance to start reading yet. jsut looked at the pretty pictures. I am traing to be a girl scout leader right now so i have to make that priority first.

that was our original thought but then we remembered we had the timeshares banked and could use those so decided we could leave as early as possible to stay as much of the week we could before the cruise.

Good morning everyone! Happy Monday!

Hope everyone had a great weekend. I was supposed to go to lunch with a friend from some previous cruises but her youngest son was sick so we had to reschedule. Since I had the afternoon free DH Mark and I went to the Toy Story double feature in 3D and then our to an early dinner. It was great seeing them both on the big screen again.

It was a chilly here in the Chicago area as well but I guess us none of us are afraid of the cold as we're going to Alaska! :)

Good morning everyone - giving us a bump back from page 3.

Did you all see this thread on the main board **** Vancouver FAQ Thread **** (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2283011)? Lot's of great information in there. We're planning on flying in a day or two early to explore Vancouver.

Boy this is just a very quiet group.

We was debating if we wanted to stay in Seattle or Vancouver a few days before. asked Hubby to decide what HE wants. so it sounds like vancouver is where we are headed to. Either way it looks like we will have to spend one nite in Washington before going on to Vancouver because of the time frames of the amtrak. oh well it will give us a nite of rest to adjust to the time change that way.

I have been reading up on all the areas to give myself a little bit of information as hubby is calling me the itinerary organizer. :rotfl2: I just prefer to be prepared and enjoy the vacation versus going in blindlessly and having a stressed out vacation. seems like every vacation i don't plan and we just wing it ends up a mess but all that have been planned out well in advance have been some great vacations.

This does seem to be a quiet group compared to some. My last cruise (the 2009 DVC Member Cruise) went to 4 threads in less than a year. Of course other past cruises I've been on have been even more talkative. They didn't call us the blabbermouths for nothing!

I'm sure as more join in we'll be more talkative and plan. For many they have other trips before this one. I'm always up to getting to know my fellow cruisers because I think it adds to the fun of the cruise.

I'm really happy with my stateroom so no worries about that. As for the dropping out that happens every cruise. You get people popping in on booking day and then you never hear from them again. Hopefully we won't lose anyone from the thread. Seems like a nice group.

We're still here!!!! DH and I got some books and a DVD on Alaska from the library the other day. The books give you a few ideas on what to check out when you are there. We watched a show last night - 1000 places to see before you die. The episode was about Alaska. It was amazing. You guys should check it out if you get a chance. Unfortunately I don't remember what channel it was on :sad2: We set up the DVR to catch "Alaska" shows and that was the first one we got.

What a great idea about the DVR! I wanted one of Travel Channels Great Cruises shows about Alaska (with Samantha Brown). They were on Royal Caribbean. It was a year or more ago but I'll have to check the line-up and see if they show it again.

The nice thing about the cruise being far away is that we have plenty of time to plan and budget for things!

I agree to getting to know my fellow cruisers. our last cruise we talked about a yr out and by time the cruise came around the kids had been trading valentines day cards, christmas cards, etc. thru snail mail so it was fun to see them when they got to meet each other in person finally.

i am now a girl scout leader for my daughter's troop so been keeping busy with that as well as researching for the cruise.:worship: have to see my dr too for my arm. plus i will be changing to the nite shift soon at work so i am not going to know if i am coming or going soon. :scared1:

i was able to get the stateroom we wanted on the first try so i wont need to change rooms. what all stateroms you have? we have 7552. which is midship.

Hi,
I'm just joining the group! I have booked 2 cabins for myself (53 at time of cruise), my DD (17) and my mom and stepfather. My stepfather has always wanted to see Alaska so I thought that this is the only way to do it. I just have to cross my fingers that everyone will be healthy enough to travel as my parents are in their 80's. But they're hale and hearty now so hopefully we'll all be onboard in 2011! I'm hoping my DS can join us too but he'll be at university and I'm not sure whether he'll be working or going to school so I thought I'd just add him later if possible.

This sounds like a great group and it's wonderful that people are already looking into excusions and reading up on the ports!

We got the following DVDs from our local library:

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm202/nascar8820/Alaskas_Inside_Passage.jpg Discover Alaska’s true treasures along its magnificent marine highway, the Inside Passage. Navigate 1,000 miles of pristine coastline, with unforgettable stops that capture the region’s rich history, fascinating wildlife, and timeless traditions. Observe coastal Indians carve totem poles in the gateway city of Ketchikan. Explore Sitka’s Russian roots. Visit Petersburg, "Alaska’s Little Norway" and quaint Wrangell, and recapture the pioneer era in the capital city of Juneau. Drive to America’s most accessible glacier—the Mendenhall, and fly over the frozen wilderness of the Juneau Icefield. From Glacier Bay National Park to the historic gold rush town of Skagway, this award-winning program is a mesmerizing portrait of this special place in the vastness of Alaska.

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm202/nascar8820/Cruise_Alaska.jpg Roam the dramatic and beautiful wilderness, climb the remote and rugged mountains and glaciers, and get close to rare and wonderful wildlife. Your itinerary includes densely forested Ketchikan, with its colorful, mysterious totem poles created by early natives; mountainous Sitka, once the capital of Russian Alaska; pristine Juneau, the only state capital unreachable by car; raucous Skagway, the jumping-off point for prospectors in the Klondike's great Gold Rush; charming Haines, home to the world's largest concentration of bald eagles; remote Seward, where stunning Kenai Fjords National Park went largely unexplored until the 1960s; complex Anchorage, a bustling metropolis surrounded by vast wilderness; untouched Denali, home to the first people to cross the Bering Strait from Siberia; indomitable Valdez, which overcame both the Exxon oil spill and the massive earthquake of 1964; fish-rich Homer, with its artist colony aptly named Pioneer Avenue; lush Kodiak, Alaska's largest island and longtime home to Eskimos; and historic Fairbanks, an adventurer's city lying just 200 miles south of the Artic Circle. Extra Features: Grandeur of the Glaciers - They move under their own power, crush or reshape everything in their path, and sometimes give birth to entire ecosystems. This extra feature takes a cold, hard look at these massive and magnificent ice forms. Top 10 Attractions - Lead a sled-dog team. Walk on glacial ice. Approach grouchy bears snacking on salmon. Can an average person really do all these things? This program suggests 10 activities to help make your Alaskan trip an experience of a lifetime.

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm202/nascar8820/DiscoveriesAmericaAlaska.jpg At Denali National Park visitors come to see Mt. McKinley, the spectacular scenery and wildlife on the 60 mile drive into the Denali Backcountry Lodge. A journey to Denali by rail on the Alaska Railroad gives travelers the opportunity to relax and enjoy the passing scenery of the rugged Alaskan wilderness.Ferries on the Alaska Marine Highway System bring visitors north from Bellingham, WA to a variety of ports along the Inside Passage. Sitka is in the middle of the Tongass National Forest. Ketchikan is the Salmon Capital of the World. Whether it’s for salmon, halibut or many other varieties of fish, sport fishing in Alaska is “huge”! Visitors can experience Saxman Village to learn about Native culture, dancing & totems or take a dune buggy ride into the wilderness. Also gain insight into the Alaska Native Claims Settlement with Cape Fox CEO Bruce Borrup. Bear watching & fishing guide/pilot Butch Laughlin brings travelers to the Pack Creek Bear Preserve. The Glacier Bay Express, brings guests up close to calving glaciers and wildlife in Glacier Bay National Park. A special tour highlights breaching, rolling, and frolicking whales near Adolphus Point. In Haines, journey upriver into the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. Further north in Fairbanks, learn about the workings of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and passionate entrepreneur Bernie Karl of Chena Hot Springs explains the connection between hot springs, greenhouses, ice sculptures and energy. World-Record vegetables are the stars of the Alaska State Fair in Palmer and a glass harmonica player charms the crowd at Anchorage’s Farmers Market.

Even though they all cover the same basic information/locations each DVD does offer something unique. The 3rd DVD did have the best overall video quality for your HDTV.

Good morning everyone. DH has been very busy the last few days looking at what others offer for excursions. He found a PDF this morning. I copied out the excursions, length of excursion and the price. This will give everyone an idea of what we can possibly expect for our cruise to Alaska. If you want me to send you the PDF, PM me with your e-mail address and I will send it to you.

I just checked the Travel Channel and Extreme Alaskan Adventures is not on their schedule during the next 2 weeks. I did find a couple more show though.

November 1 on The Travel Channel
2:00 PM Naked Alaska – Naked Alaska explores the rugged beauty and fascinating wildlife of the 49th state. This land of extremes hosts the highest mountain peaks, the most volcanoes, 100,000 glaciers and 3000 rivers.

6:00 PM Alaskan Wild – Alaska is one of the few true wildernesses left on earth. Aerial photography highlights the snowcapped mountains, wide open spaces and glaciers that punctuate the vast and unforgiving landscape.

7:00 PM Alaska’s Arctic Wildlife – As spring loosens the icepacks on the northwest coast of Alaska, animal life awakens. Birds, whales and walrus begin to migrate, while polar bear cubs emerge from their dens to frolic in the snow.

I had to dress up for our local parade yesterday. I took the Mickey sorcerer hat that we bought over 10 years ago at disney and threw it togther with a piece of red fabric draped over me and tied it all around the waist with yellow boat rope to make myself into a Micky Sorcerer. :worship: This was like a last minute throw it all togther in an hours timeframe. and my dd decided i had to wear it all day long.

What is the best time to go on an Alaskan Cruise?
What are good side trips/land excursions for various ports?
What is the temperature on an Alaska cruise? Is it quite cold, given the glaciers and icebergs?
What will I need to wear on an Alaska cruise? Will I need to pack my winter clothes and a cold weather jacket?
What is the best pre or post cruise tour out of Vancouver?
Where is the best place to view bald eagles in Alaska?
Where is the best place to view bears on other wildlife in Alaska?
I don’t have much extra in my budget for shore excursions (and some run over $300 per person!) What are some fun yet inexpensive things to do while in port?
Is it true that not all cruise ships stop in Glacier Bay National Park? I heard that this was one of the most beautiful spots in Alaska and want to see it.
My favorite cruise line does not stop in glacier Bay. What is a good alternative destination?
What about icebergs? Aren’t they dangerous? Will we see any?

Can never get to much info.....so

1. Spend time reading the Alaska board at Cruise Critic - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=55

2. Read books. My top two recommendations are:

- Frommer's Alaska by Charles Wohlforth: http://www.amazon.com/Frommers-Alask...4226021&sr=8-1 This is the 2010 edition coming out in December. I prefer this to the Frommer's or Fodor's "ports of call" books.

- Alaska By Cruise Ship by Anne Vipond: http://www.amazon.com/Alaska-Cruise-...4226208&sr=1-1

SIDE NOTES AND TIPS:

1). When checking out hotels be sure to ask them to give you the US rate because when they give you a price it will be in Canadian prices. Also be sure to ask how much in taxes...in other words be sure to ask for the full price in American $$$$$

2) If you have a Disney rewards Visa use it for everything so you can get the reward $$$$. You can use the earned reward dollars for your ship excursions, merchandise, and at guest services to pay anything Disney on the ship. We use ours for everything that we would use the cash that we have for than I go online in a couple days and transfer the funds from my checking account to the card. No CC balance. But lots of reward $$$$. You will be surprised how fast it all adds up.

I DVR'd a couple of them but haven't had a chance to watch yet. We also got a couple of DVD's from Netflix. One about the different ports which was cool and Alaska's Inside Passage which we hope to watch this weekend.

The Princess Cruise Line PDF was also great reading and has me thinking already which excursions we want to take.if DCL offers them.

when i was checking prices before to see approx cost for us it looked like about a year out depending on the airline. some was less then a year but i am thinking most was at around a year. so probably july of 2010 we should be able to book airlines for july 2011.

I am still debating the flying into seattle vs fly directly into vancouver. even though it would be cheaper to go into seattle and i could go with the airline i want there is a strong part of me that wants to just say pay the extra price and forget about the hassles of timing everything out. :rotfl2: wish it wasnt so far away that we could drive but man 4-5 days of driving each way would kill me. :worship:

I am still debating the flying into seattle vs fly directly into vancouver. even though it would be cheaper to go into seattle and i could go with the airline i want there is a strong part of me that wants to just say pay the extra price and forget about the hassles of timing everything out. :rotfl2: wish it wasnt so far away that we could drive but man 4-5 days of driving each way would kill me. :worship:

What was the cost, if you don't mind me asking?
Does anyone know about how many driving hours from Seattle to the port?

I packed our snorkel gear and the kids' goggles. I had the suit case lying on my bedroom floor, and my lovely kitty peed on it!! This is my life on a daily basis . . . (cat is sick so can't get too upset with her - sigh)!!

Jodie

Jodie, it's finally here. You better be packed by now LOL will you be at Castaway Cay for Thanksgiving? Have a great cruise!!! I want a full report when you get back!!! ;)

Does anyone know about how many driving hours from Seattle to Vancouver?

From Detroit,Michigan to Seattle it was around $500 per person round trip and from Detroit to Vancouver it was $800-$900 depending on airline and I think that was round trip as well.

driving time i do believe was around 4 hrs i think. I was debating that as well but with the possible high price for acar rental to drop off in vancouver decided it isnt worth it.

If my dad and stepmom goes we will more then likely fly into seattle rent a car and stay in seattle a few days, amtrak to vancouver, go on cruise and stay in vancouver post cruise a few days before going back into seattle to fly home. just need to determine prices and time schedules now.

We will be on the Wonder for a cruise to the Bahamas on 2/14/2010, but we have also booked the 7/5/2011 cruise to Alaska. My DS will be 9 (1 month from turning 10, so birthday party aboard) and DD will be 5 when we sail to Alaska. Has anyone ever booked a cruise then rebooked it aboard a cruise for the discount and maintained the same room assignment? We booked the last cabin available in the category we wanted, so I do not want to lose it. Regardless of discount or not, I think this cruise will be a cruise to remember for a lifetime!

Yes we are staying at the Hyatt the night before. They said that they have a DCL crew member in the lobby to handle ground transfer, so that sounded like the easiest place to stay. Look for us, I will be the red head with a little blonde cutie (dd) and blue-eyed sweetheart (ds) bouncing off the walls.

There is a college age group on each cruise. Some are more active than others. Be sure to have them go to the first meeting, that is when they meet each other and make plans for the week. There are a few scheduled gatherings, but many times the group just meets somewhere and goes to the nightly entertainment together.

DD has made wonderful friends on cruises. One was on our 2007 Med cruise and was on a subsequent cruise with us and will be on another this summer. They have traveled to visit each other and are quite good friends. A couple of others have met outside the cruise as well, and are making plans to go on future cruises together as well.

At 18, she will be able to do the night time entertainment in the bar area. The cruise staff really tries to get things going, if she is open to it she can have a lot of fun.

No - DH and I don't have any kids of our own.

The bride is the daughter of a fellow DISer we met back on our 2004 10 day cruise. She was 16 at the time. We sailed again with about 8 of those families in 2006. She was then 18 and joined us for Palo Brunch. In 2008 she got engaged while on a Mexican Riveria cruise (my DH and I missed that one) and she's getting married on Castaway Cay this July. There are about 5 families that have cruised together before going for this wedding/reunion cruise.

i meant to answer this last nite and forgot. We are flying into seattle the price is like 300 more to go into vancouver. thats about the same time frame i will get our flights going. I have been researching the past week for rental car. with 5 of us plus luggage we are considering a rental car instead of amtrak but then again i need to check prices on leaving the rental in vancouver port versus leaving it at amtrak. but having a rental would be so much easier with everything.

yep we got our pamphlet earlier this week. kind of shocked me as i wasn't expecting anything this far in advanced. was hoping they would have listed some excursions in it but no dice.

We'd be up for both an FE exchange and a meet and greet as long as someone else organizes. We've done the web pages and DIS meets for about our last 8 or 9 cruises and I'm a little burned out. I do have a great map to share if we decide to do the DIS meet in the Promenade Lounge.:thumbsup2

It would be at least a 3 day trip. We plan on leaving Friday night after work and go up into Wisconsin at least and then Sat - Sun - Mon. We sail Tuesday to Tuesday and then have Wed - Sun to get back home so we'll do a little sightseeing on the way back. We could, of course, change our minds but that is the plan for now.

that is exactly what we had planned on doing and then thought about the long trip home when you start getting that i just wanna be home feeling and you have a day of driving yet. we opted to fly then but we are renting a car and driving from seattle to vancouver. and then driving back to seattle after the trip. will have to pay to park the rental car for the cruise but findning with 5 people its the cheaper route for us. but who knows with 5 of us and 4 being adults we may end up changing our minds and driving

Tracy - saw your comment on the main board about going for tea every morning. I answered there but will answer here as well if anyone is interested. On our last cruise (the 2009 DVC Member Cruise) there were a number of us who called ourselves the sunrise club. We are the early birds who like to be up and about before our spouses and families. We'd meet up by the drink station and have our drink of choice (mine was tea, others had coffee, and still others brought thier own Pepsi). We'd sit and chat until the sun came up and our families were up and ready for breakfast. It was a great way to connect and share our memories of the day before. So if anyone is interested in meeting up for a nice cup of tea I'm game (of course we may have to move it into the Cove Cafe if the weather is cool in the mornings).

This does seem to be a quiet group compared to some. My last cruise (the 2009 DVC Member Cruise) went to 4 threads in less than a year. Of course other past cruises I've been on have been even more talkative. They didn't call us the blabbermouths for nothing!

Actually, I think we're fairly talkative! I was on the Wonder in August and the thread was very, very quiet! Hardly any posts at all. So it's nice to see all the posts on this thread and that people are so good at sharing information already!

I couldn't even keep a thread going for our Mexican Rivera cruise. This is down right chatty in comparison.

Planning 10 day vacation: Fly direct into Seattle (non-stop) :hippie: and hang out Sat, Sun in Seattle, then on Monday take 6:30am train from Seattle into Vancouver and stay at hotel near terminal Canada Place for one night, board ship earliest possible boarding on Tuesday :yay:, then fly home from Vancouver the following Tuesday.

That sounds like fun! We've never seen Seattle or Vancouver.

We'll need a first-hand report of a wedding on Castaway Cay. How wonderful! Is the cruise a week?

We're coming too! Always wanted to see Alaska and now with the Wonder sailing there it's going to be awesome. :goodvibes

Cruising with be DH, me, and our sons who will be 20 when we sail. It also happens to be our 24th anniversary during the cruise.

The big change for us is that we are putting our boys in an inside cabin to save some money. We have booked cabins on deck 6. My hubby told them the "All Hands on Deck" platter tastes the same whether you can see outside or not :goodvibes

Now I need to go and look at the other eight pages of posts so I can get to know my DIS ship mates. I know Mary and Mark from our 10-day Christmas cruise. It will be nice to meet on the high seas again. :thumbsup2

So excited :woohoo:

welcome to the group. when is your anniversary? we are celebrating our 13th on the cruise.

we are planning the fe and meet/greet and few other ideas mentioned. if you are interested in any let us know. I am the keeper of the list for the fe and meet/greet so i would need first names and stateroom numbers.

An fe is kind of like a secret santa type thing. you put a bag on the fish outside of your stateroom and each day those that participate will put something in each others bags. there is a thread on the boards for a better explaination of it. just do a search for fe or Fish Extenders. unless one of the others on here have it off hand.

ours is 7/7 well yeah an alaska cruise even better. :cool1: last cruise we went in may and celebrated dd birthday on the cruise. not that we do much anyways just the thrill of getting to see alaska and being on the disney cruise at the same time is enough of a celebration for me.

Very nice that there are so many anniversary DISers on the cruise. The only time DH and I ate at Palo he had such a bad headache that we were in and out in 45 minutes...We'll probably celebrate where ever our dining rotation takes us. (that and my DH's idea of a good time is not dressing up in a suit ;))

It will be great to see you both! Trying to get to 'gold' status on our Castaway Club. :goodvibes. We signed up for main dining. I can't wait to hear about excursions. Off to read the prior posts.

One year and two months to go!

We are early seating as well. We did switch to late for our upcoming July cruise because all our friends are late, but early works much better for us. We are platinum now and it does make booking really easy.

Our sons will be 20 so it will be nice that there are other young adults cruising too! I'm ordering a couple of the recommended books from Amazon to see what is in store for us. :thumbsup2 I couldn't even keep a thread going for our Mexican Rivera cruise. The book I have that I've been enjoying is Alaska by Cruise Ship by Anne Vipond. It has info on Seattle, Vancouver and the Alaskan ports. Still trying to figure out what excursions we want to do. Also go to www.travelalaska.com I got a really nice vacation planner from them and get monthly e-mail updates.

Our July cruise is a 5 night with two stops at CC. The wedding is the first CC day and we are looking forward to it. Then we'll just relax and enjoy the second CC day. We also go to Nassau but having been there, done that we're just going to stay on the ship.

Think about Palo Brunch for your celebration. We prefer brunch to dinner. It is more casual (Walt and the boys would be fine in Dockers and Polo shirts while a nice capri outfit or sundress would work for you). The food is great and the view should be fantastic.

You are Silver on your 2nd - 5th sailings
You are Gold on your 6th - 10th sailings
You are Platinum on your 11th+ sailing.

Alaska will be #15 for us.

Yes the boys can come to brunch as well - that is if you want them too. The great thing about brunch is that most of it is self serve so you can have as much as you want of any and all things. They do serve a plated entree which can be more breakfast (pancakes, omelets, etc.) or lunch (talapia, filet, etc.) Plus brunch comes with a glass of champagne - perfect to celebrate an anniversary.

Good morning! I know what you mean Teresa as I've felt the same way. Right now our plan is to fly in on Saturday which means we'll have all day Sunday and Monday to explore. We're planning to go on a tour over to Victoria one day to see the gardens and then on another day maybe go up to Grouse (sp?) mountain. Of course plans can change a lot in a year. :)

I have been very busy at work today :rotfl2: I have been thinking about ideas on how to organize our pictures. In the past I put them in Word and emailed them. But the file was a little too big and it took forever to send. So I decided to create a shared site on Shutterfly where everyone can see the pictures instantly. You don't need to have a Shutterfly account to see the site. If you want to be notified when new pictures arrive you will need an account. Here is the address to the site: http://mickeyswonderfulalaskanadventure.shutterfly.com/

Hi Lisa,
This is GREAT! We look like a nice group of DISers. It will be fun to be able to put a face with a screen name. It was really fun on our last DIS-filled cruise when we would pass on the ship and say hello or meet up on deck.

Hard to believe it's over a year away.

It's a beautiful evening in Dexter. Sunny and 64 degrees. Going to sit out on the patio and enjoy the evening.

Hello Everyone!

I just booked the July 5th cruise today :cool1:

A little info about my DH and I:
At the time of the cruise DH will be 55 and I will be 54. It will be DCL cruise #13 for me and #10 for DH. We love all things Disney and go to WDW a few times a year. Our last cruise was in April of 09 (Western Carribean) and we will be on a 3 night Wonder cruise this October for our 35th Anniversary. :cloud9:

I want to thank everyone who posted so much useful info on this thread, I love to read and plan for trips. We plan on flying into Vancouver on June 2, and stay downtown near Canada Place. DH was in Vancouver 8 years ago for a conference but had to rush back home due to me being in an auto accident, so he didn't get to sightsee.
We have been to Alaska before, 7 years ago, but it wasn't a cruise. We flew into Anchorage, rented a car for 9 days and proceeded to see as much of the state as we could!
It was a great trip and we knew we wanted to come back some day. We feel that since we'll be in areas we didn't see last trip we will be just as awed as that first time.
We'll be in a balcony cabin on deck 7 aft. That is our favorite location, for many reasons I'll probably share later.
Here's a photo of the two of us at the Talkeetna airport about to take a sightseeing flight around Denali.

Thanks for those! I knew that we'd have long days but didn't realize sunrise would be that early.

I don't expect to see many sunrises ;) I hadn't even thought about the lack of darkness.

I know! I love watching a sunrise at Sea but those are too early even for me. :)

Have any of you seen the movie Insomnia? The one set in Alaska with Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hillary Swank? A great suspense movie set in Alaska, it had scenes where Al went crazy with the light coming in the window all night. I know how he felt, it was weird for us, esp. when we were in Fairbanks as it really did not get dark there at night.
But living there in the winter I'd truly go mad with it dark 19 hours a day!:scared1:

Has anyone been thinking about excursions yet? I think I'd really like to ride the White Pass Train excursion in Skagway. We love old trains, and this one looks like it has scenery to rival the Durango-Silverton Train in Colorado, which is our favorite.

In Ketchikan I'm leaning toward a flightseeing/cruiseboat tour into Misty Fjords. We did a day cruise out of Seward back in 2003 to Kenai Fjords NP
and got really close to glaciers and saw whales, sea lions, puffins, etc.

Not sure about Juneau yet!

Count me in as a copycat as well because the White Pass Train and Misty Fjords are two we have on our possible list. The other we are looking at is a helicopter to a glacier in Juneau.

This link from cruise critic gives some idea of prices. http://www.cruisecritic.com/ports/article.cfm?ID=91

One thing I remember from our trip to Alaska years ago was the fact that it really never got dark at night, and we tended to stay up way later than we normaly would, and we always thought it was much earlier than it actually was.
We won't be as far north as that trip, but I did check and we will have lots of daylight for sightseeing.:goodvibes

Hi fellow cruisers. We are a quiet group of late so I thought I'd share a passage from one of my new books (or I would if it wasn't copyright protected ;)) My first book is The Alasks Cruise Handbook, a mile by mile guide by John Upton.

Let's explore our first port of call - Friday Skagway, Alaska 7:15 a.m. 7:30 p.m.
* did you know Skagway only has about 825 permanent residents?
* Upton says 'the shopping is great'

Best cruise-line shore excursions (might have been taken from my second book: Frommer’s Alaska Cruises and Ports of Call 2010)

Eagle Preserve Float Adventure (6 ˝ hours, $207 adults, $115 children 7-12). This outing combines a fjord cruise (45 minutes to Haines) a leisurely raft float through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve.

The handbook lists MANY more tours but no explanation. Hope everyone has a nice weekend. I'll post the other ports when we hit another lull.

Horseback riding (3 ˝ hours, $160 for everyone, minimum 12 years old) Giddy-up on horseback to see the remnants of Dyea, once a booming gold-rush town, and explore the scenic Dyea Valley.

Skagway by Streetcar (2 hrs, $42 adult, $22 children 12 and under) This is as much a performance art as it is a historical tour. Guides in period costume relate tales of the boomtown days as you tour the sights both in and outside of town aboard vintage 1930s sightseeing limousines. Though theatrical, it’s all done in a home style, as if you’re getting a tour from your cousin Martha. I saw a picture in the first book and they are charming

White Pass & Yukon Railway (3 hrs, $122 Adult, $61 children 3-12) The train makes two round-trips a day. The sturdy engines and vintage parlor cars of this famous narrow-gauge railway take you from the dock past waterfalls and parts of the famous Trail of ’98, including Dead Horse Gulch to the White Pass Summit, the boundary between Canada and the US. Don’t take this trip on an overcast day – you won’t see anything. The Upton books shows a picture of a train right up at the cruise port!

Yukon Jeep Adventure (6 hours, $159 adult, $105 children 12 and under) Retrace the steps of the gold miners along the Trail of ’98 from the comfort of a four wheel drive Jeep Wrangler. Interactive headphones permit rivers in the convoy to keep in touch with guides as they describe the events of ’98. The convoy passes all of the historic gold-rush sights.

Golden Glass-blowing experience (3 hrs, $207 Adult, $125 child, minimum age 7) Visit a working glass-blowing studio to learn how to blow or mold molten glass You’ll get to create your own ornament, complete with 24K gold.

Ghosts & Goodtime Girls Walking Tour (2 hrs, $40 adults and children. Minimum age 16) Take a walking tour of Skagway’s streets and back alleys, led by a costumed Red Onion madam, and end with a champagne toast at the infamous Red Onion Saloon. Look out for the brothel’s resident ghost.

North Yukon Golf Experience (8 hours, $179 adults and children golf cart included) Head into the Yukon on the Klondike Highway, a route that runs parallel to the White Pass Railroad (and serves up amazing scenery, including deep gulches and mountain peaks) Your destination is a 9-hole, regulation par-36 course set at about 60 degrees latitude north, and surrounded by lakes, mountain, and forest. Lunch is served in the log clubhouse.

Hope everyone has a nice weekend. I'll post another port if we get another lull.

I've been there with the pin cushion routine. Hope all is well.

We're counting down until our next DCL cruise. We sail in under 8 weeks. In fact 7 weeks from now we should be on the road to WDW for a short stay at BLT before the cruise.

Hope everyone is doing well. Before we know it we'll be at the one year mark!

We love BLT. We stayed there last Nov/Dec. in a studio on cash. We had a Magic Kingdom view that was wonderful and got to walk back from the MVMCP. We're staying 2 nights in a Bay Lake 1 bedroom this this. Still love my Boardwalk home the best because Epcot is my favorite park but this trip we're going to see the Main Street Electrical Parade so looking forward to walking back home after a late night at the Kindgom.

What I like to say about it is you have to equate it to an apartment/condo in a downtown major city.

 about it isn't as spacious as OKW or BW.

It isn't supposed to be, it's supposed to an an ultramodern urban match to the Contemporary, which it fully is. If I were looking for more points at WDW that's where I'd buy in as it'd be a perfect offset to Boardwalk.

Nope - no games for me. I used to be a season ticket holder but that was way back in the day before Mark and I were even dating. I've been a Hawks fan since the 70's. I will admit I haven't followed it as closely in the last 15 years or so but between the Winter Classic a few years ago, the Olympic and now this it has been fun reliving the memories.

Did you run out to the corner gas station this morning to buy your car flag and t-shirts? That's what Walt and I have done after every Wings Stanley Cup victory. I was at Dick's Sporting Goods at 7 am getting the official t-shirts and a sticker for Mark. Was hoping for a hat as well but they didn't have them. The store opened at 6 am and the place was hopping. Luckily it is right near where I work. We'll have the DVR going tomorrow for the parade and celebration.

Hi Tracy,
I'm looking forward to seeing your travel blanket. Sounds great! I think we are going to try and fly in on 7/3 to Vancouver and stay a couple of nights near the port. My worst nightmare would be missing the ship!

I'm totally geeked about excursions. I have heard rumors that there may be an Adventures by Disney add-on for the Alaskan cruises. We went on an ABD trip last summer and LOVED it. We'd do that if it is offered.

I bet you're excited about your upcoming cruise. If you do a trip report let me know. I would love to hear all about the wedding.

You'll have to share what you made for the FE (and perhaps received) so we can come up with great ideas for our Alaskan cruise.

We'll have to see how much the ABD will be (if it will be). Too bad Walt and I have such great Disney taste...we are spoiled for other cruise lines and travel companies now...

we are still hammering out which one but looking for something close to the terminal. would like to do the one right there but with us needing two rooms and the cost being way high i don't see that happening. but looking at the days inn and one other one that is close by and is around $179 a nite.

I'm jealous Mary. i wish we was cruising that soon already. i am itching to go somewhere but keep telling myself no you can't or you won't get to see alaska:confused3 so i am throwing myself into my crafts and such to try and make time go faster.

here's a couple pics of the blanket i just finished for dd. the one side has mickey heads with the princesses in them as well as some of dd's other favorites and the print fabrics was things that was dd's favs. looks pretty neat. picture doesnt really give a good view of it.

on the state's side we are considering letting dd collect peoples signatures from people in the states but not sure how well the marker will work on the fleece. might just have to print a map out and have people sign that. thinking would be a neat thing to do since we are going from ohio to washington plus all of us are all over as well.

i am thinking we might just fly into vancouver the day before and go ahead with the pan pacific. either way it goes the cost will be the same but my dad is freaking out with the cost of this trip so not sure what we will end up doing. i told them i want to book the hotel as soon as i am able too so i know we have it and the same with airline. i think they are seriously considering driving out there and meeting us still. time wil tell though. :confused3

Hello Everyone! We have booked this cruise and are so excited to sail to Alaska. Please sign us up for the FE exchange. Our group will include:

Kristi (me)
My husband, Brian
Matthew (age 9 at the time of the cruise) and
Andrew (age 5 at the time of the cruise).

My MIL, FIL, BIL and SIL are also sailing, but I don't know if they will want to participate in the FE exchange yet.

Thanks to all for posting such great info. This will be our third Disney cruise. Also, my husband and I sailed with Princess to Alaska in 2001. We have been waiting and waiting for our boys to get old enough to take on an Alaskan cruise. We are so thrilled that Disney is sailing there. Our first Disney cruise was in April of this year and now I just can't see sailing with any other cruise line. :)

I see you have BLT in your signature so I'm assuming you own there. We stayed there in November and loved it!

Welcome Kristi. i have added you to the FE list. if you know your stateroom number i will need that too if not let me know when you do get it.

my daughter will be 8 at time of sailing so its nice to see some more kids her age on this cruise

Anyone know about what time we would be boarding with us leaving port at 3pm..my fax confirmation said everyone must be onboard by 1pm so i am wondering if we will be getting a brunch buffet instead of lunch.

On a side note...we are going to go ahead and book with the Pan Pacific the nite before. they do have a room tat will fit all 5 of us or we can do two connecting rooms for about the same price as the one so we are going to go for it.

http://www.al-cruise.com/FAQ.php

Hi everyone...lol...I came here to see if anyone had any extra info to add to my research and found this above....seems that others are doing the same. Keep an eye on my list because I started my research again and will be adding to more info. :thumbsup2 most of the info on my thread has come from my researching the Internet and phone calls to Canada....will be calling some numbers in Alaska to see what is going on if DCL has started adding them for excursions. We have free long distance so it wont cost me anything.:cool1:

was surprised they answered me so quickly and even had any information available. although i will say its kind of conflicting as the itinerary says 3pm departure and they said all board by 3pm and safety drill time is unknown yet. :confused3

will be interesting to see how things come about as we get closer to the new year.

we are taking dd to renew her passport next week before the prices go up. kind of bites hers expires after the cruise but not afer the required time frame they want of 6 months.

on a side note: anyone else have a cricut on here? i just got mine recently and have been curious what all kinds of things i can do with it without having to purchase a bunch of stuff.

We're on this cruise also! We're so excited to go to Alaska on DCL and love that the Wonder will be on the West Coast. This will be our sixth Disney Cruise (yay! - we made Gold level for Castaway Club). Our group is:

Meg, Joe, Jack (15), Maddie (13), and Charlotte (10). We're waiting to hear if an Aunt and Uncle will join us as well.

We've booked 3 nights before the cruise at the Fairmont Waterfront for some extra time in Vancouver.

Not sure yet if we'll be doing the FE exchange.

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone on this thread. I've been busy buying into the new Aulani resort in Hawaii. Now that that's done, I can focus on Alaska!

not yet i don't :) i have almost all of them now..the toy story one is the one i don't have. do you have the gypsy or any of the pc software? I bought the gypsy as i just didnt have alot of time to go thru everything standing at the machine. i do love it though i can take it to work or my appointments and work on things. i just got the sure cuts alot software as dh wants to import some images hes got for a business to cut out of vinyl but havent played much with that yet. odd thing is even though it is a machine based for scrapbooking i have yet to do anything for scrapbooking with it  i just learned it cuts fabric and my mind is going into creative mode.

ok maybe i do have a question can i turn things into stickers? how would i do that? was thinking of creating some stickers for dd activity book i am creating for her.

A little late to the party as I've been packing for our cruise that leaves this weekend.

I have the cricut and love it! I mostly use it for scrapbook pages but have also used it for some displays at both my work and Mark's. I'm way behind on my scrapbook pages. I'll have to fix that when I get back from the cruise.

As for stickers if you get a Xyron with the repositionable glue you could use that as stickers. In fact the small one I have is called a sticker maker.

hmmm i am sooo jealous.. can i hide in your suticase pleaseeee? have a good trip and can't wait to here how the wedding and all goes.

hmm ok will have to check into that a little more. I am creating some stuff to go with my FE on the cricut now.. just trying to figure out what the best way to go about it is.. I did decide i was going to make some extra FE bags to give to out dining room servers and room hostess along with their tip.

on a side note..i now have two connecting rooms book at the pan pacific hotel with a harbor view. I got the family package so dd will get milk and cookies and then we get an in room movie and popcorn and pop and then the buffet breakfast. we decided we arent worried about getting down to check in at the opening and will just get around casually and since we check out by noon we can go check in then. looking forward to looking out the hotel window to see the harbor and possibly the ship below :goodvibes :thumbsup2

will be able to book our airline tickets in a few weeks :cool1: so all the main stuff will be booked and all we have to do then is concentrate on paying it all off :rotfl2: and packing.

welcome to the group..there is a thread on the topic but basicly it is similar to a secret santa. You hang a Fish Extender ( a bag or shoe pouch style hanger) on the fish that is just outside of your stateroom door. then those that are participating will drop off a "gift" in your FE at some point on the crusie and vice versus.. there is a thread dedicated to this topic that can probably better explain this then me.

The ship's looking great, the Outlook Cafe is going to be PERFECT for Alaska viewing. :)

They also upgraded all the stateroom tv's to flatscreens with video inputs.

Alongside that they also re-arranged the in-stateroom viewing. Wasn't thrilled with the selection of mostly very old live-action movies. Used to be they'd have a bunch of soon-to-dvd stuff, not anymore. They do separate out the animated channels into three groups, classics, recent releases, and a whole channel of nothing but Pixar. Not a lot of repeating, but they need to work on staggering out the start times better, too many times literally nothing on any of them.

Now I know you sailed with us and some of the others from this thread on the 10-day, might want to pop by.. Il Pochi il Fiero y Blabbermouths...Magical Reunion FINALLY!!! (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2322294&page=80)

Thanks for the info Mark! We are looking forward to our cruise and being on the Wonder again.

The guys will be disappointed about the in-room viewing. I remember one cruise where they watched The Terminal many times while enjoying a late night "all hands on deck" platter. Nice they have their own room now :thumbsup2

I'll pop over to the other thread to see who I recognize :goodvibes

Tried to book our pre-cruise stay at the Pan Pacific and while the dates came up on the calendar when I put them in it said rooms not available for those dates. :scared1: So I've booked 3 nights pre-cruise at the Fairmont Waterfront right across the street. Now I just have to watch for air fares.

YIKES - booked a year out? I've just sent an email out to my TA to try and get us booked for pre-cruise days. We may be staying at the same hotel as some of our DIS cruisers. Fingers crossed....

you have to call the pan pacific directly to book this far in advance as their prices are not in the system yet. I found this out when i book ours thru them. and they gave me 2010 prices for our stay in 2011 :thumbsup2.. so if you still want to book their call directly..i have their 800 number if anyone wants it.

The best number to call from the US is 1-800-937-1515. i will just post it here as well...this is the number for the Pan Pacific.. I spoke to Rory Schmidt.

No they do not have transportation from the airport to the hotel. We are doing the skyrail ?? which is about a 30 min ride to the dowtown area..my understanding is the drop off is fairly close to the terminal.

Not yet. Had a problem with the website and called their support office but never got a call back. We still have a little time. :)

Called today and booked the Pan Pacific for Saturday to Tuesday. I've also canceled our room at the Fairmont. Pan Pacific was our first choice so I went with it. Thanks Tracy for the hint to call. That worked much better than their website.

I love disboards! I had previously booked 2 rooms/3 nights at the Fairmont Waterfront through DCL. Just called the Pan Pacific. With a AAA discount, I saved $100 per night per room, for a total of $600 in savings (vs. what I was paying at the Fairmont)! Plus they guaranteed me connecting rooms for my family of 5 which DCL/Fairmont couldn't do. woo-hoo!!!! :woohoo: Thanks for the info everyone!!
